Root method? Please help... - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I'm just going to apologize in advance if this is in the wrong thread.
I have a VZW GS4 (4.3 MJ7) and I'm very interested in Xposed Framework. Obviously, I'll need to root the phone, which I'm open to completely, and I have rooted in the past. The only two root methods I was able to find were Kingo and Vroot, which, as many of you most likely know, are suspected of containing malware. I have searched and searched, seemingly forever, and cannot find a reliable root method. Is anyone aware of something I can do to root?
By the way, my primary computer is running Ubuntu 13.10, I'd prefer a root method that can be carried out on my primary computer, if not, I do have an old desktop running Windows XP. At this point anything that can get me rooted I'll be happy with.

Unfortunately there are not any other root methods... And I got my new phone with mj7 already on it... And I don't trust vroot so I'm waiting. But many others have had no ill effects doing so.
Here is a topic where most of this is being talked about.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2531704
In the Verizon galaxy s4 general there are maybe 1 or 2 more topics also I personally just keep checking back.

[Q] Knox Blocking Root Attempt

Just purchased a Galaxy S4. When I recieved the phone I did an update to Android 4.3. I then tried to root it using CF Auto Root and Motochopper. Both tools failed and I received the following error:
Security Notice: An attempt to access a secure area on your phone has been blocked.
I think the error is coming from the KNOX app, but can't disable it or clear the data. Anyone know of a work around?
I don't believe those rooting tools you mentioned work with our S4...not yet anyways...There is no root method in the US that has been proven to work...you can use VROOT... If you don't mind a Chinese superuser apk

You needed to root before you updated to 4.3 now you have to wait.
At the moment there is no publicly-known way to root your phone unless you're rooted on MI1 and use the persistence option in supersu. Sorry buddy, you're going to have to wait it out.

Since you've done this - especially trying CF Auto-Root, please try this so we can learn something from what you tried.
Start your phone in download mode - power it off, then power it up by holding the volume down, home, and then power buttons. Hold power until the phone vibrates, then let power go. You'll get a message starting with "Warning!!" about a custom OS. Press volume up to continue.
What does the line "KNOX WARRANTY VOID" say? 0x0 or 0x1?
Once you've read that, hold power down for 10 seconds to restart normally.

Those tools do not work.
On 4.2.2 MI1, root_de_la_vega was the method.
On 4.3 MJ7 there are no known working root methods.
KNOX isn't preventing root.

As stated above, there is a root method that works for MJ7 but some believe there's a risk in using it. Others like myself have done it regardless and were successful.

There is no safe and reliable root method. The root is buried in a Windows executable of questionable origin. Numerous threads telling people to use it and posting the link have been closed. I know those methods exist, but I won't take the chance on anything where I can't peek under the hood. Why not post the source if nothing strange is going on?

Open the development forum for this phone here.
Then, on your phone, use Settings/More/About phone. Read the "Build number". The last 3 characters are how we describe what version your phone is using.
Now, in the development forum, in the "Search this forum" put the word "Root", a space, and the build number.
For example, "Root MI1".
Look for threads on rooting. For example, "How to Root your Verizon Galaxy S4 (Builds: MDK, ME7, MI1)"
or "Saferoot: Root for VRUEMJ7, MK2, and Android 4.3".
One of those two threads will point you to ways to root your phone. Using Kingo or Vroot is really a bad idea.

[Q] Rooting I545VRUEMJ7 (Verizon 4.3)

Hey guys!
I recently got my S4, and I updated to the 4.3 update, as I didn't know that I wanted to root my phone then. I have been looking all over, and I can't find a method that works for rooting my phone. I have the Verizon version of it. I have 2 questions.
1. Has someone figured out how to root this particular version of software? I have already tried Kingo, and it didn't work. Knox blocked it.
2. If not, is there a way that I can revert my phone back to 4.2.2 Android, so that I can root from there?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
-Whoonu
1. Yes, some great people on this forum have figured out how to root the 4.3 MJ7 update. You need to root with VROOT 1.7.2. Then you need to run the root_de_la_vega script to get rid of the Chinise superuser and install SuperSU instead.
Follow these instructions after VROOT - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47331487&postcount=169
Or follow these instructions if you don't know how to use VROOT - Mod Edit: Links to vRoot are currently not allowed on XDA. There are concerns as to the personal information such as IEMI numbers and Serial numbers it collects during he root process which is not necessary.
So, if your willing to try that, all you can do on this 4.3 at the current time is to root and then debloat the device. No custom recoveries have been developed (yet *holding breath).
2. From what I've read, once you update to 4.3 MJ7, your stuck with it, no downgrading.
Good luck and have fun!

The last part of this is true, you can not install a custom recovery, so no ROMs.
The first part is not entirely true, you can do more than debloat. You can run apps requiring root, debloat or freeze apps using TB, remove ads, edit system files, etc.
I recall hearing that Hashcode was working on Safestrap for 4.3, so ROMs may be coming.
Thank you for explaining and clearing up my post a bit! I'm still quite new to all this stuff myself. Much appreciated!

Yep, I was in the same boat after vroot. After doing some research and reading threads on here I found that I had to run the root de la vega script as well. Bascially you need the android terminal emulator and titanium backup (paid verstion too, I believe to be able to freeze apps, specifically the "Superuser" after you've gained root access in terminal emulator) to succeed. Follow the instructions that I posted above (the ones from xda-develepors.com), and you will be able to rid your device of the Chinese "Superuser" program and have SuperSU installed instead, and it will be allowed to update its binaries.

[Q] Root Samsung Galaxy Legend SCH-I200PP

I can't find any threads on this device but it is a really good phone and it was just on sale for Black Friday at Walmart.
I have tried everything to root this phone but to no avail. From what I can see, this phone is identical to the Galaxy Stellar except it is for Verizon Prepaid. Any ideas?
I have the same curiosity!
I forgot some details. I have tried the Bin4ry root tool and DebugFS. Both gave me "Permission Denied" errors which seems to indicate that this phone has a new security patch to work around.
I finally found the solution. Use Cydia Impactor. I can't post a link but just google it.

If you have received the MK2 patch and lost root or just now thinking about rooting your Legend, There is still a way.
It's called Safe Root. It's designed for the S4 but it works on the Legend just fine. I failed to do restore root when the patch went to my phone, I consequently lost root, tried to root again with Cydia and V Root, and they both failed. After going through the search process again, I found Safe Root here:

In case someone needs to know...
When I connected my phone via USB it initially was "Connected as an installer". Running the saferoot script in this mode didn't work as it would revert to MTP mode midway through. Putting the connection into MTP mode before running the saferoot script worked like a charm.
Thanks to all involved in making this happen and finding out that it works for the Galaxy Legend.

I ended up getting a Samsung Galaxy Legend, but of course it is a Prepaid phone and I'm on postpaid. Does anyone know by chance, if I root this phone, is there a way to reprogram it or unlock it from prepaid so I can use it on postpaid? Thanks for your help...There's gotta be a way, right? It's just unlocking it, I think all Verizon does is put in a code. Thanks in advance!

[Q] SCH-i605 (Note 2) 4.4.2 update and still root?

I have been searching all over to find any information on this new kitkat update for the Note 2. I haven't found much. I think the main thing I found was Knox 2.0 or whatever. Is it possible, or is anyone working on a way to at least get root back on here? I didn't do the update yet, but it's bugging me. I would like kitkat and I like this phone, but samsung/verizon locking this thing down is driving me nuts. To the point that I want to sell this phone. So yeah, is anyone aware of any information on the 4.4.2 update and the possibilities to root it at least. I don't even care to install ROMS.

Thats unfortunate, has anyone else given it a try?
Yeah this is unfortunate. I would try it if I could flash back to 4.3. Has anyone attempted that? I would gladly chip in and help with this, but I'm new and don't know much about rooting and what not. If there are people working on it I would like to find them.
So... I can confirm that this root does not work for the VZW Galaxy note II running the latest update 4.4.2 (ND7). I tried it several times. Not sure if I am doing anything wrong, but from what I gathered, its pretty straight forward. Just run the app. Also, I can tell you that once you download the OTA you WILL NOT be able to go back to a previous version. I tried to Odin back to MJ9 4.3 and that failed. So, essentially, once you do the kitkat update, you're screwed, and stuck. I can't root, can't go back now. Hopefully someone else can figure this out. Or chime in?
Please try these steps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784138
Rooted wife's S4. Ran towelroot. Tried the play store supersu but it couldn't install su binaries so I thought it wasn't rooted until I tried an app that needed root. It got root via supersu even tho it kept complaining about binaries. I then followed the steps in that post and the phone is now rooted with safestrap.
Also try app called root checker from play store.
Towel root does not work. The phone just reboots almost immediately after pressing make it ra1n. Once it boots back up I have checked with root checker. I am not root. Tried it several times. It appears that the exploit gets past the enforce SELinux but for some reason it doesn't on this phone. Or maybe it's Knox that is knocking it down and rebooting the phone.

doesn't work with mine either
after reading the thread on towel with the drastic high usage is disappointing. Im seeing now where someone suggested puttting SuperSU on before the the towel exploit .. however it questionable. RIght now most talk seems to steam from shutting off knox which seems to be the issue.
Unfortunately putting supersu on before you use the towel exploit does nothing. Supersu needs root in order to run or do anything. And even so. I ran the exploit several times. First time with with supersu. Second time with out. Then I reinstalled the latest and ran it again. Still nothing. Phone just reboots and is unrooted. Also, you can't disable Knox with out root. Whether that be from supersu disabling it or freezing and/or uninstalling Knox files. You need root in order to do these things. I ended up emailing geohot a few days ago about it, but he never got back to me. Like I said I am willing to try things and help on a project. But, I am no programmer.

how do i root my nextbook NX785QC8G? is there a way

I purchased a next book NX785QC8G with jellybean 4.2.2 already installed. Specs are in the screenshots that I have posted. I am trying to see if there is way to root this tablet. I've looked into towelroot, stumproot, cydia impactor, and others but can't get concrete answer as to if any of these would work. I don't want to risk bricking or doing worse to my tablet. I was hoping there was any information that anybody knows on rooting my tablet. Any help would be very much appreciated.

To determine if Towelroot can root it go into Settings, then About Device, and then Software Information. You should see a date under "Kernel version". If that date is before June 3rd 2014, Towelroot should be able to root it. Otherwise it won't be vulnerable. If it doesn't work it won't harm the device as it checks for the vulnerability before attempting it.
Framaroot can also potentially do it. Again, no harm done if it doesn't work.
There are also some sketchy ones- Root Master, VROOT, and Kingo Root. I would recommend staying away from those. Yes, they work, but we at XDA don't know how they do what they do, and they send info to a server in China. Again, we don't know what's being sent there.
There is no date before kernal info it just says 3.0.32+. I have included a screenshot
The build number shows that the ROM was built April 1st of last year. Towelroot should be able to root your device.
Towelroot does not work. I have just tried it. I am looking in to one click root now, have you headed of this method.
Oneclickroot says device isn't in their database to check back in 24 he's.
I've heard of OneClickRoot but I've never used it so I can't vouch for it.
Try Framaroot. It tends to work well with a lot of devices.
Framaroot doesn't work either. Towelroot says it won't work on kernal versions before June 1st 2014.
I believe I have a solution. I found this here on XDA:
Rooting instructions for Nextbook 8 Quad Core (NX785QC8G).
1. Connect to PC via USB, enable USB debugging on tablet, then use*Cydia Impactor*to create ADB device Driver. (USB>Driver Scan>Create Driver).
2. While connected USB, use*Kingo*after device driver is installed to complete rooting.

Next time, you might want to try a Google search. Searching your model number followed by "root" brought this right up. My apologies if you did try a search but were unsuccessful.
OK so I was able to get it rooted using cydia impactor and kingo. I have installed super su, titanium backup and busybox x+. What if any Roms are available for my tablet. Its jellybean 4.2.2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55321603&postcount=150
From what I can tell it's based off of the stock ROM, but it was the best I could find.
Thank you very much. I googled I binged and I got info and help only here. I will download and let you know how it goes. Fingers crossed
