Full wipe - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I wanted to ask if there was any reason to not just do a compete wipe of my phone and the SD card.
I'm trying to start all over with this phone. I have a HTC Thunderbolt that I haven't uploaded a new ROM on in almost a year.
I'm currently in Japan, but will be returning to the states for vacation and would like for my phone not to give me to much to worry about since it's been pretty out of sync for a while.
I'm not worried about losing contacts or anything (it's all up to date on my google account) but are there any system files that are saved on the SD card that are necessary?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and give any advice.

I've done it.
I wiped the sd card not realizing it deleted the rom I was going to flash when I did that and I had nothing to flash.
Luckily I was able to Mount it with usb and put the room back on.
Worked out okay.
As long as your recovery has the Mount as usb feature you will be able to put the room back on and flash. Or you can push one with adb.

Thanks for the reply!
I actually got ballsy and just did it as well.
It worked out just fine actually. It's a good thing I had all my music on my computer because I didn't think about it deleting all of that haha.
But now I'm running a very clean LiquidSmooth ICS rom and it is amazing so far.
Now I just need my extended battery to come in from Amazon

ROM problem

Hey,
I installed cyanogenmod 9 on my gt-i9300, the installation went smooth, but then I had the great idea to install the Ninphetamin3 kernel as well, it turns out that they are not compatible with one another(or I did something wrong), now the phone starts up and keeps looping at the cm9 boot animation. I have no back ups on the internal sd card as I did these two actions at the same time, and the phone cannot read my original stock rom.
I might have accidentally deleted them in my haste(tried following a youtube fix that did not work9
question…..Can I put the cm9 rom and gapps on a micro sd, then plug it back into the phone and reinstall it this way?
btw this is my first android mobile, and I am using an osx system to root and any information on how to fix this problem via an osx system will be greatly appreciated.

Did you try wiping cache and dalvik cache?
99% of the time, wiping cache and dalvik cache will solve your bootloop problems and force closes.
Hey
Yepp I tried all of those, still no luck, will try with the micro sd later about 2am here in sthlm and I need some sleep before the old job...
I will update to say how it goes...
Ninphetamine kernel is a Samsung kernel, it is not compatible with CM9.
Why don't you just reinstall CM9?
hey,
That is what I would like to do, but I flashed cm9 with rom manager, and since my phone is stuck looping and the boot animation I cannot reco it from there. I tried doing it from clockworkmod recovery and cannot find the rom in the file system either....so my plan is to pop a micro sd into my computer transfer the files onto that, then pop it into the phone again and attempt to do it this way... Hopefully it can be done.
Download original firmware and flash with odin. Start over.

hmmm okey would it be better to start over from scratch then? would I have to format the entire internal sd before i start?
Also I cannot use odin(only osx or Ubuntu) so is the procedure the same with heimdall?
sorry for all the questions guys but like i said my very first android so a bit unfamiliar(should have switched ages ago)

Okey.... Update!
I transfered the cm9 and gapps onto my ext sd card using a laptop, then back into the phone. I reflashed and basically I have a phone that I can use again..
One more thing I noticed since reinstalling the cm9 rom
I got everything back but when I go to the play store on my computer it no longer recognizes my mobile, but
if I access it through my mobile it does is there any explanation for this?
Not a big deal but it would be nice to reinstall apps and some paid apps again without having to pay for them again..
any ideas?
Perhaps something to do with the baseband on cm9?

okey, I just found it a bit strange that I can still download most of the paid apps from the play store via the phone and not the computer.
Does that mean if I restore the stock rom(no intention) that the store would recognize the phone again?
Just use your computer and flash stock rom to your GS3, that's how i solved similar problem with GS2 when it was looping.
Odin is fairly easy to use, tons of instructions online, finding right stockrom online might be time consuming.
Backup your phone ALWAYS! With cwm, i have big list of backups always ready, everytime you messing with new roms, kernels or what ever changes you make, it's worth the time, trust me.

Removing All Personal User Data from Blackstar ROM

I'm a noob. I managed to root my Note and successfully install my first ROM. Sadly, I have to give up the phone (bills etc) and am selling it tomorrow morning. How can I ensure the ROM remains on it, but it's completely wiped of all my data.
Currently have Blackstar ROM on it.
Thanks in advance.
go into recovery and choose factory reset and format/wipe internal storage. reboot and check if anything remains. wipe external also if you are selling sd card with it otherwise dont forget to remove sd card.

Permission error when saving anything to sdcard

I first noticed that when I went to take pictures that a toast message would popup that said something along the lines of "Unable to save file to sdcard due to insufficient file privaleges". Originally I thought it was the Rom at fault which I will leave nameless beings that its occoring with every Rom I've flashed since as well. But only after switching between the 3 Roma I had saved on my sdcard prior to this incident, I tried to download a newer Rom to see if it was a bug that had been fixed but couldn't download anything to my sdcard. The only time I can download is through the market or via adb push so I know the internal storage isn't broken, but not recieving the correct permissions.
Has anyone else experienced this or have a fix because I don't want to bring the phone back "re-locked" and ask for a replacement. But I also do not want to buy a new phone or go through asurion. Thanks in advance and happy hollidays!

Backup everything from your storage. Go into recovery and format /sdcard. I had the same thing happen. Worked fine after the format and restoring the files.
I'm getting ready to head home so ill do it when I get there. Should I format it in cwmr recovery or through settings just so I make sure I do it the way you did it. Less room for error lol. And thanks a lot I'm really hoping that it helps! I miss having the camera mostly for taking pictures of my 14 month old Son Hambo!

[Q] Flashing to obtain memory swap

Hey guys,
I've been lurking for a little while now and reading up on steps I need to follow to swap my internal and external memory, but I wanted to clarify something to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong. First off, I have a Verizon Note 2 that I rooted using Odin and running "Jelly Beans build.1 VRALJB 4.1.1 by Beanstown106". That's as far as I've gone thus far. I tried just using directory bind to install apps to my external micro sd card, but that program has too many issues to use reliably. Apps were forcing close and the app itself was glitching. I've decided to run a memory swap mod, but from what I've gathered, I'll need to unlock the bootloader and flash a new rom. So here's my plan (please let me know if there's some flaw in it):
1) I'll unlock the bootloader using AdamOutler's guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2043636
2) I figured the next easiest step would be to just flash a custom rom that includes the memory swap in it inherently, like the angelROM TouchWiz debloat build here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2055073&nocache=1
Thanks for any info you folks can provide. This is my first time jumping into advanced Android modifying and I'm nervous about mixing the wrong builds/roms and bricking my phone.
P.S. One last thing: Does anyone know if AFTER having run the mod to swap memory, if you can transfer all the data to a new (larger) memory card and swap them out? I have a 32 GB card but intend to get a 64 GB one in the next few days. Can I flash the angelROM build now and then just swap them when I get the larger card or will that cause issues?
There shouldn't be any issue as long ss you turn off the phone and then remove the 32GB SD and use your computer to handle the swap. It wont break anything if the phone is on but it'll make it act a smidge wonky imo.
Also: http://db.tt/NtrxYbU8
Its a zip that will switch the sd card positions. This isnt my original work but I use it because it works no questions asked.

Thanks so much for the info! I'm still a little nervous about whether or not I'm missing a step between unlocking the bootloader and then jumping into the "memory swap ROM" immediately. Can anyone verify that my plan is correct and whether or not the angelROM w/ memory swap mod is OK on our Verizon Note 2's?
As long as you use the angelROM for the Verizon Galaxy Note 2 Development section you will be fine. After unlocking the bootloader via Adam's process you should have TWRP recovery, which will allow you to fladh the rom.
Download the rom to either your internal storage or your external storage.
Extra: from what I have been told flashing modem's (new radios) that leak will screw up the current ROM you are using. So if new radios leak anytime soon and you are still running the sd card swap you will need to undue that if you plan to flash them.
Extra 2: I can't vouch for it myself because I'm having my own problems after undoing the zip file i shared, but I know undoing the zip is as easy as using root explorer to delete the alteration in the init.d file under etc, so theres that.
Tl; dr: after you unlock the bootloder you are good to run the swap.

Great, thanks again for all your help! I'll give it a go tonight. I'm actually fairly techie and have hacked many devices in the past, but I feel like modding Android devices is probably one of the toughest yet. There are just so many variations of rom builds and hacks, coupled with the confusion of WAY too many android devices and specifics for different carriers... It's hard keeping everything straight. Thanks again! :good:
Omg this is a God sent post! Ok so I have the 16gb and I only have 2gigs left lol,... Ok but what happens when you flash a new rom or an update from Verizon comes out am I going to have to revert back and be tranfering data each time? Will recovery recognize the memory swap? After the memory swap will I have to move or copy everything over before or after the swap, if after how will it boot if it thinks it's OS is on the memory card now.... If I revert back does that mean the OS needs to be copied back to internal memory before the swap... Ughhhh this is too much but I LOVE my phone and there is no other way I have to get this working... I really hope they improve this method

So to answer some questions:
It will revert back to normal between roms. Thats why I recommend using the zip I posted. Again its not my work and I am not taking credit for it. But that zip can be applied to any rom.
You should worry more about losing the bootloader and root under new software because most likely that will happen.
I suggest doing a clean install with the swap, and not installing apps. Otherwise you will have to move stuff manually.
Rom will continue to work if you want to remove the init.d file but most likely have sd card issues as I am seeing. Instagram doesnt recognize I have an sd card in. Its hit or miss and in now way reflects the owners work, its the nature of the beast unfortunately.
Hope that helps
EDIT: The zip isnt rom specific, whereas angelROM is specifically for that rom

Lets say you use cyanogen right? And a new version of the rom comes out. It will recognize whatever is currently your external and internal, but when you flash a new rom it will revert back to original paths.
EDIT: This doesn't apply to the angelROMs that have the switch pre applied

That I am unsure of. Because data wipes everything I believe it would get rid of the init.d file so it woukd revert back to normal, but I'm not 100% sure on that

Ok, so I followed the steps I detailed in my OP and everything went pretty well. I'm running angelROM v4 and wanted to update to the v6 that was posted but I'm unable to boot back into recovery mode now... After initially unlocking, I made a nandroid backup in TWRP, but now I can't seem to get back into recovery mode. I power off and hold volume - & power but the phone just boots back up normally. Is there something I'm missing here? Does flashing a new rom remove the TWRP recovery option or something?
Never mind. I apologize if I wasted anyone's time with this. I figured out I can reboot into recovery mode by using Rom Toolbox. I just figured there would be a shortcut that would allow me to do it without it also.
Ok so your not able to use the power + up key combination like normal?

You know, I never saw in any of my searching any indication that "volume + & power" was the correct key combination to boot to recovery. Everything I found said that to boot into recovery mode in TWRP, you need to use "volume - & power", not volume +. I'll give that a go. Thanks!
By the way, I'm just about ready to give up on this whole memory swap mod thing. Has anyone gotten it working without issues? The angelROM I posted about earlier worked but when apps were installed they didn't get allocated to the correct memory. For example, I first attempted to install some of my backups from Titanium Backup Pro, and when I did that, the apps installed to the (switched) "card" memory. Which, of course, is pointless, since the whole idea is to get them to install on the external sd card so the device can hold more apps. I initially figured this was probably a limitation with restoring apps in Titanium Backup, so I tested installing some apps directly from the google play store. When I did that, those apps ended up taking up memory on BOTH storage locations. Example: EXT MEM had 10 GB and INT MEM had 4 GB before I installed a 1 GB app. AFTER installing that app, my EXT MEM had 9 GB and my INT MEM had 3 GB.
At that point I figured it was probably an issue with the angelROM itself so I ditched it and moved on to Bean's Revision 4 (which I like the look of more anyway). That happens to have a "memory swap" option so I enabled that and I'm getting the EXACT same issues. So my question is this: has anyone been able to use the memory swap mod and install apps on the external sd card WITHOUT the app taking up equal space on the internal storage? If so, what did you do to get it to work?
P.S. I'd post these questions in the angelROM thread or bean's revision 4 thread, but being new here, my post count is still too low to ask questions on the development boards. Thanks!

Guys I made a dumb mistake. After trying to install Pinky and the Brain rom coming from another rom, I wiped my internal sd card. Well I downloaded the pinky and the brain rom and put it on an external sd card. the rom shows when I go to install but it shows all the folders, but it doesn't see the rom.zip file. I don't think this is something I have to flash with odin and Casual is out of the question since im rooted, unlocked, and on a custom rom. I am currently have TWRP. do I have to manipulate the pinky and the brain rom. Im sure im missing a step. I don't want to odin back to a stock rom then using casual to get back. is there an easier way.
I use my droid as my main internet source. Now im stuck with a POS sony Erickson experia just to have a working phone and im connecting via 3g..sucks for me lol..seriously what am I doing wrong that my phone is not showing the zip file to install via TWRP.
Again I have no rom on the phone at this point...just to be clear

Bad idea. ALWAYS nandroid. Download a rom on your comp and use a card reader to transfer it to SD. Then flash it. Idk what else you can do other wise.

Seems you still have access to TWRP correct?
I would then load into it, under advanced, go to sideload. Connect it to a computer with a functioning adb and sideload the zip of the rom you want to flash over.
teamw.in /ADBSideload (that's a URL, I can't put them in posts yet, too new)
I have saved a phone in a similar situation this exact way.
Hope this helps.
I do still have twrp...I'm gonna try to download Scotts rom and put it on sd card and hopefully twrp will see the zip
