Hey guys,
I'm a new user and I know how great this forum is, i've lurked without an account for a little while. I have an international GT-i9300 and I wanted some advice on roms, how to load them and what steps should be taken.
I already have CWM installed and have root. I regularly use titanium to back up my apps and system data (just incase). But I want more control. I preferably want a rom to get me better battery life, as i'm out all day normally and the stock is just... terrible. I also hate touchwiz. I wanted some links to other threads and perhaps some tutorials to get me started. Helpful XDA users answer my call please.

Actually has no secrets for installing a custom ROM on your phone.
You can find other ROMs here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2218825
Where: AOSP system based on pure Google.
I can not tell you what would be best for the battery, which would be best in performance, looks, is very relative. But I like Temasek ROM, android 4.4 kitkat, and his kernel is very customizable, performance may vary from User to User.

Stock is touchwiz. Paranoid android is far from stock tbh with looks. Even though it is a great rom.

I meant sort of stock android. I have a Nexus 7 and the Android OS seems very barebones. I wanted something like that.

Yes imo the best custom rom available for our s3 Highly recommended!

Well, usually the ROMs with better battery are the Touchwiz based ones....since Samsung has not released the Exynos sources, its hard to create an AOSP ROM that doesnt have some battery problems, although the existing ones are pretty good.
If you were looking for an AOSP looking ROM, there is the Ultima ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911572 It includes the Jelly Bean Domination theme, which is basically AOSP theme for Touchwiz, and some AOSP apps. Unfortunately, the devs haven´t updated to 4.3 yet-I think there are plans for so, at least until they finish porting the JB Domination theme to Samsung 4.3
There is one ROM that uses some AOSP looks, the Nightmare ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2330827 . I can´t tell how much does this look AOSP, so its up to you.
And finally, if you are searching for a pure AOSP ROM, the ROMs I liked more were Slim Bean, Temasek CM and Archidroid.
Also, for kernels, I am enjoying Yank kernel on my Touchwiz ROM, through in my AOSP times I used Temasek and Boeffla...
I hope this helped for you. Remember, there is no best ROM, its personal and depends on each phone, I am just sharing some examples based on your desires.

Hey
I've been looking a while for a stable and clean ICS ROM, but the recommendations I've found are months old, so probably out of date by now. Therefore, I was wondering, what is the most stable ICS ROM which is clean/pure Google ICS?
Cheers!
Cm9
Formula 1
After this, this thread is going to be locked
Symbian.
I.E try a bunch of roms out until you find one you like.
That's what's the Original Android Development thread is for.
I use SlimICS and its the closest to pure Google you can get, no bloatware or unnecessary apps at all.

I'm sorry but I hear this a lot but you see, pure ics is what comes with nexus and close to it is cm9 and formula 1.
Slim ics as name suggests is skimmed down version of that, he even changed the launcher thus it no more pure ics what comes with nexus from google.
Please just read the ROM threads and search and make your own determination.
Thanks

Im brand new to this ROM flashing stuff but i have worked with computers for years so im comfortable flashing the phone etc.
My questions are how do you choose what ROM to flash and how do you know it will work?
My phone is running i9300BVALF4 stock ROM but all the custom ROMS's i can see are not a slightly earlier build than mine, will it still work ok?
You read the rom description and decide.
Your current firmware is not relevant .
I9300. Takes any I9300 rom .

Choose omega rom v13
It's a modded stock rom so all the features are working and there aren't many bugs
When you click on a thread it usually has a not working list and browsing through the last few pages gives one an idea of how the people are finding it

It was a close call, but he hasn't asked "what is the best Rom?" ....instead he sneakily asked "how do I chose the best Rom?"
This is a new development in assault tactics and the sniper committee is pondering the matter before taking to arms.

No, a firmware is just a stock Rom with stupid carrier apps and games baked in. Best thing is to root, do a nandroid backup of your stock firmware, then get happy flashing. Just read the threads and stick to Samsung based Roms until you are comfortable with what you are doing, it's a learning curve,, but a worthwhile one, another tip....explore the forum, look at the stickies, observe, listen and learn....and don't rush into anything....enjoy

Hi all,
Have a question re rom in galaxy s3 (uk).
My girlfriend has been using it for a while now and there are some issues like disconnecting with wifi and drains battery realy fast, to save juice wifi needs to be off and phone put in save battery mode and you have to do that each time you put away ur phone...
I have android tablet with custom ram from team EOS and the device is much more better that before (faster! No adds! With different cpu usage profiles to save battery! ...) so my question is what ram would you recommend for galaxy3 ?
Thanks!
Good Luck!
Android 4.3 (pizza sandwich) is the best

Oh boy he fell for it.
Anyways, if you dont have time, look for roms with most views and replies for starters
I would also like to remind you, that OMG I WANT DUH BEST ROMZ threads are not allowed and end up closed
The fact that you don't have time to do any research won't change XDA rules, and it should be a warning to your friends that if you don't have time to do the research you won't have the time to sort out the problems you will inevitably encounter when you mess up

There is no best absolute Rom that's why those threads are forbidden, to avoid countless trolls and fan battles. You must determine if you want Sammy or not Sammy based Rom, and then pick up one considering the description in op.
use Omega 33.3 Rom if you want a touchwiz based rom. Its tweaked for performance and very stable with the latest additions of Android 4.2 and Note II features..
For a pure Nexus feel use Cyanogenmod 10
For modified Nexus Feels ParanoidAndroid
These three are my favorites

I am personally not a huge fan of any of the roms I have tried so far.
I have just pieced together my own rom and use that... I really wish there was an AOSP based rom (e.g AOKP, PA, CM) because I must prefer stock android.
That said my battery life is outstanding running latest leak from sammobile xxalf4 (or whatever) which is Pandoriam. Working on device tree. Patience appreciated. Support the guys cooking these roms ! They are just sharing their own personal work
Also. Perseus kernel = outstanding. I see what he's doing right there and Im a fan! Only if you value performance, battery life , stability.
Don't like what's out there / coming , most of the code can be found via Google/ github

Thanks for the reply! I've been going through it. I am new to rooting and would want a nice ROM to go hand in hand with my Note. There are so many different ROMS making it very confusing! Is there a consensus on what the 'best' ROM is? Or could you explain to me the benefits of the one you are using and where I can get it? Thanks alot again.
You can get carbon under the Original Development Thread. It has had the least amount of reboots for me but there are many fine 4.2.2 ROMs offered here.
Asking for the "best" can start a flaming thread, since its very much a personal choice.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
Ure most likely to get reboots in all 4.2.2 roms n most likely camera issues...until they release an official stable 4.2.2 rom then that'll be the rom u are looking for..to get less reboots I turn profiles off in settings n disable hw hardware layout...try that with any rom see what happens...

Best advice........read read read
As suggested by others look at development. It depends what YOU want or are looking for. Many 4.2 have issues. Mainly reboots. Some flicker in screen.
What i do is find rom that looks interesting in features to me. Then i go to end of thread and read backwards. Lets me know the more recent issues and if there are fixes or tweaks to compensate.
Lots of bells and whistles in 4.2 but sometimes we sacrifice stability.
Your choice........good luck and go slow.

In my own experience the most stable i717 4.2.2 rom is sons of android build 4, all other 4.2.2 roms I've tried where Awful for hot reboots and screen flickering. As always, make sure you do a full wipe before installing anything, happy flashing!

CyanogenMod 10.1.2 has been the smoothest ROM for me, with the best battery life. I use SD-Booster, Autokiller, and Greenify (apps) as well, which give me super speed, super smoothness, and eternal battery life.
Since this change, not a single reboot, screen flicker, or other Android 4.2 issue.
