[Q] How to updating stock ROM after rooting ()? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
After my warranty has expired, I have rooted my phone (flashed CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4) to be able to use root-enabled apps, which I don't use anymore. I didn't not flash custom firmware and stayed with stock. Now I hear there is an official update to 4.3, which I would very much like to install. However, the OS fails to check for updates with the following message:
Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available

I have tried removing the root using "Full unroot" option in the SuperUser app settings, which have promptly removed the app after a reboot. This didn't not solve the problem. The question is what is the easiest way to install an official update? Do I need to flash stock recovery? Where can I get one? How do I do that? Do I need to reset the flash counter? How do I do that? Or can I do it some easier way? I don't really care if the root stays or not, however, I would prefer not to loose data and make as few dangerous steps as possible (especially the ones requiring to take out the battery or unplug the USB cable at "right" time...).
Thanks in advance for detailed info and/or pointers to relevant tutorials.

Couldn't find any info on whether an update through Kies preserves the /data partition? I understand that probably there is just no sense wiping it, but would still appreciate if someone confirmed this.

Very interesting read. Many thanks. In fact reading the list of root advantages made me want to have root again... though now I don't have the SU binary and not sure how to get it back. I guess I'll have to do the rooting process again after installing new ROM. Btw, does flashing stock ROM restore stock recovery too?

I've just read it more carefully (text below huge Samsung logo). It was pushed, but since I got my phone in Germany, the update is only for G4. An update to G3 is only available in US. That is probably why my Kies doesn't show any updates yet and no updates would be available via OVA even if I had it working...

Couldn't find any info on whether an update through Kies preserves the /data partition? I understand that probably there is just no sense wiping it, but would still appreciate if someone confirmed this.
Yes its preserved but only a fool has no backup .
Kies is a Samsung tool you will not find much information about Kies as its not a development tool .

I do have a backup and was merely asking to find out whether I will have to use it or not. Perhaps I would choose to postpone the update if it meant that I would have to go though the process of restoring from backup which is not easy. So I am no fool and my hearing is good enough. I appreciate your help, but please quit insulting me.

That is all about using Odin to flash downloaded ROM's. Searched "Kies" within the thread and still no real answer to my question.
You need to reroot after upgrade usually .

Generic Firmware

My Galaxy s has jsut arrived, I want to flash it with generic firmware without rooting it............for now. Can anyone point me in the right direction of an easy to follow tutorial. Thanks in advance guys
Install Samsung KIES on your PC, connect your phone via USB and open KIES. If there is an update for your firmware it will notifiy you.
You'll also be able to check manually by clicking on 'check for new firmware' or something to that affect on the main screen of KIES.
You won't be able to put on custom roms etc without root
Consider trying this also: On your phone, go to settings --> About Phone --> Software --> Update.
This should check for any latest updates for your phone, although i can't remember this option working for me though. KIES should be fine.

Flash a stock rom after you have read the faqs and guides .

No modems are interchangeable and flash able to change via CWM or Odin .
LP8 is reputedly better than LP7 .
LP7 is nearly as good as 2.3.6 .

I was looking deeper than I needed to mate and to be honest, I got a little confused by kernal versions. I was nearly pulling what little hair Ive got left out. Thanks JJe, as long as I get rid of the 3 stuff on my new Galaxy S 2 then Im happy. I do plan to root but only once Ive gotten used to it and have done a little more research
Done, I now have a device with generic FW on it. Will root it tomorrow. That was surprisingly easy
Ive decided to root my phone. Theres quite a choice of rooting guides, which one is the best? I will need an easy to follow giud with everythng I need. Thanks in advance guys, hopefully someone will point me in the right direction

[Q] Help. Can i root my S3 or it´ll die?

Helo, im new and i recently bought a samsung S3 i9300. I've been reading a lot about the sudden death, but i prefer to solve some doubts before trying to do some root things... (please sorry if my english isn' good).
I want to root my phone , but im not so sure if my device or firmware is already "fixed" or something (i'll attach the data at end).
I need to know in case that it's fixed... what are the better way to root it (i mean less risky). For example via Odin or Via CWM, CF-root or another method. idk, im confused by now..
im new to this phone and i dont want to brick it or something...

Remember, read the stickies, but if you're unsure of anything, ask. It's easier to set you straight before you do anything than to fix something after you've done it

Ok, i've readed a lot about rooting & flashing... i just want root acces for the apps that need it.. yet dont have intention to flash a custom rom, so i think the Cf-AutoRoot is the best option, whitout the custom repair mode and the apps.
I just have one doubt left about the sudden death. Is that a flashing or rooting issue?
In that case, how can i know if my i9300 have or not the "fix".
I am on a stock 4.1.2 (all the data of device in the first post)
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
As previously stated, 4.1.2 has the fix. Rooting does not affect this. It does not change your firmware version

[Q] am trying to understand s3

hey i'm reading guides in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2344125 to understand s3 more
but i have a question about mine ( sorry for being rushing in but i do need to change my phone these days )
my s3 is on leaked 4.2.2 israel , i need to flash back into 4.1.2 stock EGYPT ( or any good custome ROM ).
when i flashed 4.1.2 EGY before it made " restarting bootloader ". so rootSU told me to make factory wipe.but it didnt work
while am reading i found that restarting bootloader is a good sign that my phone isn't brick ( note : its working normally but the leaked ROM 4.2.2 having alot of issues ).
what should i do , please ask me for what u exactly need to know of info about my phone so i can provide and fix this.
(( do i need to just wait for 4.3 official release )) ?
thanks in advance
i really wanna make it to the factory state so i can backup nandroid and save my phone so i can start trying

efs is not related to rooting or custom roms mate. it is related to the network connection and your imei number. you need to back it up and keep safe so that if you face network problem after updating the phone to the latest 4.1.2, that might help you restore. refer to the thread under my signature for any queries relating to efs/imei.

rooting a phone wont do anything by itself. rooting just allows to modify system files, lets u delete pre-installed apps and lots of other stuffs. after rooting your device u can also use some apps to optimize your device.

So the os stays the same, is there a way to roll back from the update as my phone only started messing about after the update, my phone is now out of warranty so Samsung will do nothing but surely a update that has made my phone almost unusable is down yo them to fix

If you have a genuine Samsung update from Kies or OTA that has caused problems then it is covered by warranty .
But as 4.1.2 did not cause problems they may just factory reset the phone .
Samsung's limited warranty is 24 months .

I did email Samsung customer services who asked me to take the phone and proof of purchas (which I no longer have) to a service centre, problem is the nearest one is a 2 hour drive
You could root and run an app called "Greenify" to greenify the system processes. Alternatively, you could flash a different ROM that has no bloatware.
Is there a way I can reset my phone that will clear everything including the updates so it's like fresh out the box?
