[Q] restore /efs while unable to boot system - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My i9300 got stuck in boot screen after I activated Link2sd with a newly repartitioned extsd. I made the first partition FAT32, the second EXT4.
I've got a cwm backup from before I repartitioned ext.sd
I've also got a 'efs.tar.gz file', which I found in the copy of my ext.sd. I assume this is a backup of efs/imei?
Before each operation I've done since I've wiped dalvic cache, wiped cache partition and factory reset.
I repartitioned my ext.sd to one FAT32 partition.
I have tried to restore my cwm backup, everything looked good, but when rebooting the problem was still there.
I flashed a couple of different roms and kernels, they seemed successful, the boot screen changed as expected, problem still there.
Then flashed 'CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300' with Odin downloader, got a "PASS", problem not solved.
I can still boot into recovery, which changed to stock as expected, and I can boot into download mode.
I've also tried to boot without any ext.sd or SIM inserted, nothing changed.
The recovery gives me this message:
E:failed to mount /efs (invalid argument)
E:failed to mount /efs (invalid argument)
# MANUAL MODE #
---Appling Multi-CSC…
Applied the CSC-code : unknown
Successfully applied multi-CSC.
I take it my /efs is damaged and needs to be restored? Can I restore it from 'efs.tar.gz file' while only being able to enter recovery and download mode? With Odin, or some other software?
I've read someone managed to fix their efs-folder by extracting their efs.tar.gz, and then manually paste the files in place of the efs-folders contents, but then I would need to access my phones internal sd. Is that doable without booting the system?
Couldn't find a solution anywhere, any help is much appreciated!

Manually Wiping Data Partition

My phone did the whole failed encryption bull shhhh. Figured that the issue is either located in the Vibrants DATA Partition or the SDCARD Partition (internal memory). I have attempted to ODIN back to stock but when it goes through the wipe data factory reset stage at the very end, the Data Partition fails.
I'd like to know of a way to manually get into the phone and format this partition clean. Then maybe odin will work.
Can it be done with ADB?
I got an old REcovery put back on trying things out from step one when I first got the phone a year ago.
Boot and Data partitions wont format. Boot just fails and I doubt thats where the issue is. But Data gives me this error:
Formatting DATA:...
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(File exists)
Error mounting /data/!
Skipping format...
Done.
So anyone got any pearls of wisdom here? Or is this thing truly bricked?

Read this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1580902 . There is no known fix just a work around, good luck. That bug made me go back to GB ROMS, it's ICS related unfortunately.
Sent from my T959 using XDA Premium App
iTz KeeFy is correct. There is no "fix" for the ICS bug. Only a work around that requires the use of your external sdcard.
Odin >> Heimdall >> JTAG will not fix it.

Help! problem loading Roms

Not sure if this has been answered, but I have been searching and cannot find an answer.
I'm S-Off with Dirty Racun, have been flashing Roms for the past year, no problems, backing up and restoring Roms with no problem. Recently was using the latest Hatka LTE but wanted to restore to an earlier version. Didn't work. Did a super wipe and tried to install clean. Didn't work.
Have been messing with this all day and am stuck. At first it was saying that it could not mount the /sdcard. I thought maybe the internal sdcard was corrupt, so I formatted the internal sdcard. Didn't help.
Anyways, yes, I can get into bootloader and I can get into TWRP.
Yes, I have tried other versions of TWRP. All my backups were created under 2.4.1, have tried 2.4.4 and 2.5 to restore, no success.
In TWRP 2.4.1:
It will say:
Restoring 4 partitions...
Wiping System...
Formatting System using mke2fs...
Done.
Restoring system...
E:Unable to extract tar archive '/sdcard2/TWRP/BACKUPS/HT2324......
Wiping Cache..
Formatting Cache using mke2fs...
Done.
Restoring cache...
[cache done]
Restoring boot...
[boot done]
Updating partition details....
E:Unable to unmount '/system'
Also, not sure if this is related, but when I do Factory Reset under the Wipe section, it will only show that it is formatting cache, formatting data, and wiping .android_secure. It used to say formatting system, but now doesn't mention it?
Also, immediately after it says unable to mount /system, if I try to wipe system, it will give me a fail, unable to unmount /system
Basically, I'm stuck at TWRP and bootloader.
Also, when I try to install a ROM, any ROM, it will die - for example MeanBean 3.09, it will say:
Formatting and Mounting Partition...
Clearing cache and dalvik...
Installing /system....
Installing /data...
symlink: some symlinks failed
E: Error in /sdcard2/MeanBean-v309-jewel-ltevo.zip (Status 7)
Please help! What can I do to restore it back to the way it was so that I can at least get a working ROM on my phone?
Thanks!
Also, if it will help, I am HBoot 1.19.22222
Radio 1.12.11.1210
OpenDSP-v31.1.0.45.0815
Thanks for any help in advance!! Really need this phone to boot into something working.

sorry for the replies to myself, but as an update, now even after rebooting into recovery, I can't even wipe - the first thing that happens after I reboot into recovery is I see
E: Unable to mount '/sdcard'
E:Unable to recreate android secure folder.
E:Unable to mount '/sdcard', which repeats itself a couple of times
then Running boot script...
Finished running boot script...
This happens before I press a single button in recovery (TWRP 2.4.1), I mean it happens immediately as it is booting into recovery

I had the same issue and ended up using three different versions of TWRP, but if you go to the TWRP thread, captain just posted his version of recovery that he built from source and he fixed some of the issues with the android secure and changed some of the wipes, check it out and reformat using rm rf, works better for me it's in the advanced options...

[Q] Unreadable Internal Partition

Hello All,
I recently came across a rather annoying error on my Galaxy Ace (GT-S5830i), after using it the phone decided to turn itself off without any warning and restarted in recovery mode without any interaction from me. I then told the phone to restart as I had no reason to be in the recovery mode, however it then began "Boot-Looping" and would not turn on, Recovery Mode and Download Mode still function as normal. After an hour of it stuck boot-looping I decided to flash a new ROM (JellyBlast V3.0.3) this completed sucessfully according to Clockworkmod, I then rebooted and it still continued to Boot-Loop. So i then rebooted and selected Wipe Data/reset. The Log showed the error I was waiting for it read as follows.
-- Wiping Data...
Formatting /data
Error mounting /data!
Skipping Format
Formatting /cache..
Formatting /sd-ext..
Formatting /sdcard/.android-secure..
Data Wipe Complete
After Seeing that it was failing to mount the data Partition I went to the Mounts and Storage Option and tried mounting the data partition there "Mount Failed"
Does anybody know why it can't mount that specific partition or how to erase the NAND and manually Re-Partition it? I've tried ODIN to no luck.
Using Linux Ubuntu 12.04LTS
Thank you for taking the time to read this
PS I've attached a photo of the Log given by CWM
Try to format with stock recovery.

Tried stock recovery aswell, as CWM isn't flashed to my device, no luck
Flash stock rom and than go to stock e3 recovery and wipe everything.
sent via cooperve.
Have you use .pit file and tick repartition? If yes than you may have a hardware problem.

The problem isn't with flashing ROMs, its the internal partitions that are corrupt.

I've used the .pit and Selected Repartition, I've read on another page somewhere that you can use adb shell and then use FDISK to repair the partition as I suspect that an application I installed caused the error, howeve I keep getting "Permission Denied" despite being rooted?
U could use Droid explorer. Not sure it has the format command though... But has plenty commands may get u to have root access from adb shell may be...

Close Please. Solved

Hello guys,
I have a very strange problem that noone else has because i cant find anything about it on the net.
I have a Galaxy s3 with cyanogenmod 10.2 and boeffla 2.1 stabe using twrp as recovery. I´ve set up my system and made a backup of everything. then i´ve wanted to check if the restore is working so i restored my backup. after a reboot my entyre phone was set to factory state. happened 2 times . cyanogenmod was still installed but i had to configure the entire system again. after downloading all apps i decided to install cwm instead of twrp using cwm 6.0.4.5 touch for i9300 flashing via odin 1.85. everything worked fine and i booted into recovery to make a backup. cwm then says: Error cant mount /system so i tried to mount the system via the storage option. still says cant mount /system. then i rebooted my phone and again everything was gone... im really angry because whats the point of using a backup and then everything is gonna be erased.
i hope someone can help me with this. i also would erase everything and start from zero so that everything works.
Edit:
manual factory reset shows this:
formatting data
Error mounting /data.
Error mounting /sdcard/ . android_secure!
Skipping Format
formatting cache is working
cant format sd card.
&
Cant download apps from google play because of server problems...
show log:
mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcb1k0p16 on/data failed: no such file or directory
W: failed to mount /dev/blockmmcb1k0p16 (file exist)
cant wipe dalvik cache
!!!phone gets resetted everytime after cwm says error cant mount /system!!!
regards
Can be closed
I´ve installed original Samsung firmware and then CWM + CM10.2 + Boeffla 2.1 again and now CWM can mount everything and the Backup also works. maybe Twrp ****ed something up. i dont know.

TWRP on Swift 2x: Failed to mount '/data' (Invalid Argument)

Hi all.
I'm trying to make a last backup of the stock Android of my Swift 2x before flashing LineageOS. But TWRP (version 3.3.0-0) Seems unable to use the /data partition. I got various messages like:
Could not mount /data and unable to find crypto footer.
Failed to mount '/data' (Invalid Argument)
I tried to format the partition: Wipe -> advanced wipe -> repair or change filesystem -> change filesystem -> ext4 but it didn't change anything.
What's wrong? What can I do?
Thanks a lot for any hint.
bumping this thread as I also ran into this issue.
When using TWRP, the data and system partitions can't be mounted. they also show up as being 0mb in size.
Because of this, no backups can be made and a full system wipe also yields errors.
What I did was change the filesystem to ext2 and then change it back again to ext4.
Doing this at least allowed me to flash crdroid, but making backups still doesn't work.
Whenever i go into TWRP again, it's the same thing again: unable to mount and partitions show up as 0 mb in size.
Anyone know what's causing this?
Wileyfox encrypts there data when you factory reset your device or after youve rooted your device .To get around this you need to do a factory reset using stock recovery once thats done then turn off the device. Then using minimum adb and fastboot type (fastboot boot twrp.img) that will boot your already installed twrp now erase data internal storage etc you'll notice you can finally delete stock os youll see internal storage is showing mbs available again etc worked for me perfectly.
