Im coming from an X2 and i have to say the white color looks horrible its almost got a brown tint. Is this because of amoled? On my X2 when you turn the screen on the colors look white, crisp and clear on razr they look horrible.
I know about auto brightness and all that but this is weird is this normal for amoled?
Is there anyway to set thresholds on auto-brightness? Why does the white look so bad when dimmed?
I would compare it to another razr, maybe at a vzw store. I came from an x2 as well & I don't notice any strange tint even though the whites are more muted on the amoled screen.

When I look at images or videos, whites look fine to me. They look muted/tinted looking at email and webpages though, but after a few days it looks normal.
Ya its mostly in general UI areas for instance i use handcent sms and when the popup window comes up the white text area for the reply just looks really bad, really dark and funky...ya im gonna take it to VZW for comparison...it just seems so weird coming from X2, it almost seems like the X2 screen looked brighter/sharper/better im only on day 2 with razr but the screen thing is just kinda weird.
Are all amoled screens like this? Is it to conserve power?
Compare it to some other Razr, I really like colors on mine. On LCD screens they do seem to look more natural, but I like how they pop out on this amoled. Easier to read in outside light conditions, plus it's an eye candy every time I turn on the screen. I could stare at it, doing nothing, for hours .

It's not so much normal for AMOLED as it is normal for the RAZR's Pentile layout. I liken it to looking at a 3D image without glasses.

Ya i just went to store to compare and its the same at the store, whats weird is the NEW white model Razr the screen seemed a bit brighter and whites looked cleaner. All were set to auto bright in same lights...Also compared to Galaxy Nexus and i found the GN screen worst than razr in washout effect. Also UI a bit choppy im thinking of switching but now not sure GN seemed cheap the battery cover just snaps on and off with these little clips you have rip off like a door panel...weird
Matt,
You might remember me from the x2. I'm on the razr now too. It's not you or your phone. I know exactly what you're talking about. Market is a prime example.
I guess I'll take it to get true blacks. It is the AMOLED.

Ya Mista i remember you...
Ya im not crazy,
too me it looks terrible i showed my girlfreind this new "amazing phone" and the first thing she said is why does the screen suck. Everyone is saying the colors pop ect...i think this screen sucks and so does the GN i might bail for the HTC rezound at least it has some good development going on and a faster processor im not sure im just not liking this screen. Very Disappointing in a "Flagship Phone"
What are the chances that this can be fixed with software updates? I think 1% chance maybe, i just wish VZW would carry a better stock of phones why not the SGS2 why does VZW have to be so weird about what phones they carry.
Ya the market looks horrible...dog$hit
I don't think a software update can fix how AMOLED's produce colors. I know what you're talking about. Give it a few days and see if you adjust to it. Definitely a huge difference from the bionic/x2. I'm getting used to it.
Another thing -- load a black web page and look for the blotches. Found that last night.

So I have been here and there, had this and that and enjoyed most phones I have owned, this however is not a "Razr vs Galaxy Nexus" thread. I just happen to be someone who switched from the Galaxy Nexus to the Razr and am having some issues and am looking for some help.
I picked the phone up before work and didn't have a chance to use it until I got to work and my experience at work was slightly disappointing to say the least, one of the biggest complaints I had with AT&T and my 4S was that I didn't have a data connection at work, so I switched over to Verizon for the Galaxy Nexus (more on this later).
Well the Razr seemed a bit strange today, it seemed as though I would go from three bars of 4G to full service of 3G, the issue being that this process took 20 minutes with the phone being unusable in the meantime. The other issue I faced was that my data connection was almost none existent. If I loaded up a website the front page would load but clicking a link woild either do nothing or would load a blank page. The most concerning part seemed to be that if I closed the browser or just switched to another task not only would I lose any background tabs but the phone would take the tab I was on back to the Google home page. Shouldn't the phone remember what website I was on instead of the browser resetting every time I go to another task?
My most concerning issue, which I'm not sure if it's specific to my device or is a Razr thing, is that upon looking at the screen head on the text entry field (white) has a yellow tinge and the grey buttons surrounding the keyboard are seriously yellowish. The strangest part is that if I tilt the phone either left to right or up and down all yellow tinge goes away and the display/picture looks incredible. What in the world?!?!?
I'm also now having issues remaining connected to my wifi network at home (works and then remains connected but no data transfer until its shut off and turned back on)
For the record I understand Verizon has had issues lately and am wondering if this is a lingering issue. My galaxy nexus averaged less bars but would switch between 3G and 4G almost instantly and was very speedy connection wise even with less bars (on 4G) .
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Sorry you're having so much trouble. I haven't experienced any of the issues you are having.
Hand off from 4g to 3g and vice versa takes a few seconds for me. Verizon has had a few outages lately so data has been a bit spotty for many people.
Have you tried a 3rd party browser such as Dolphin Browser? Try duplicating the issue on another browser other than the one you're using.
The screen on the Razr does have a greenish/blueish tint when it is set at low brightness levels. This is a flaw of the AMOLED screen technology used. However, I have not noticed any yellowish tinge, and when looking at my phone dead on it looks much better than if I were to tilt it in any direction. Whites don't look absolutely white, but definitely not yellowish.

Absolutely not true. It is a software problem that will be solved with a custom kernel when Moto will unlock the bootloader.
Can you expand on this; the screen tint being an os problem and not related to the type of screen. Mostly just curious.

Please elaborate. I'm extremely curious to how a custom kernel can change how a screen technology produces colors. Awaiting your reply.

My phone clearly has a yellow tint of everything when looking directly at it, tilting it left or right, up or down and everything whitens out and gets more crisp. Are you saying this is normal and software related??
Anyone else notice this?

Mine does not appear to have the tint.
---------- Post added at 02:14 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:13 AM ----------
Mine does not appear to have the tint. It is easy to adapt and get used to color issues, so I compare to other devices like the Rezound and Gnex.
Only issue I have is green and red are GREEN and RED, but that is the issue with this current tech.
I believe that the slight tint is due to the AMOLED technology used and the one used in Razr does not use the traditional RGB color pattern i think it uses RGBG ... using a kernel with Voodoo driver could let one alter the colors to their liking ... just like in the Galaxy S and Nexus S =) hope i was of some help

Display cannot be corrected with software.
I haven't had any display problems at all. I believe the problem lies in a faulty build batch. I've heard it throughout the RAZR threads, and it may be necessary to contact your provider about the problem, and make them give you a razr that works properly. As far as browsers, I have all of the 3rd party browsers installed for just a case. I never use stock, and although it's a bit slower, XScope has always had the best results for me (on almost 10 different devices, and 3 providers).

I dont have much to say other than that I have the same problem. Head on the white is yellowish and just a bit tilted it's much better.

The white is a bit more white IRL but the photo is pretty much showing the truth.
Gonna see if I can get it replaced tomorrow.
No screen problems here.

I have the yellow tint also, turning up the display brightness seems to help though.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA App
After a visit to two Verizon stores and looking at three Razrs (2 black, 1 white) I can assure everyone that this is simply a trait of the screen used on the Razr.
All four Razrs I have had in my hand have experienced the same thing, slighting yellow white and greys head on and a slightly blue/bright white when looked at from an angle. A great way to see the difference is in the XDA app when looking at the new post list, just look at the green bubble on the right side at am angle, it pops much much better than looking straight on.
On a good note though my screen was by far the least yellow of all four I looked at (all set to the same brightness and tested at different levels including auto brightness ) and was the only one that didn't have image retention.
I will live with it though because other than that I am working through most issues and love the phone.
On a side note has anyone noticed when unplugging the Razr that directly after you do the batter goes from 100% to 99& instantly? Just wondering if anyone else noticed this. Thanks!

Water-repellent nano-coated Smartphone
Just to participate in the brain storm, could it be due to the water repellent nano- coating that the screen appears to have a coloured tint of some kind. The colors are - after all lightwaves and of the nano-coating has an influence on that they might just bend the lightwaves a bit. Honestly I don't really see it unless I really want it to be there.
Just got my Razr yesterday, compared to my bionic the screen is yellow lol. Whites are not white like on my bionic, they have a slight yellowish tint, but your right when tilted to the side its fine. Go figure.

I'm in a similar situation as several other people around these forums are - I purchased a Razr from Costco and it had the splotches on black screens and developed a dead pixel. I then returned it and got another which doesn't have dead pixels but still has the splotches and also seems to have a very creaky case (feels like it's not together very solidly). Also, I do notice the colors aren't as accurate as I would have hoped with an extremely narrow viewing angle before color significant color distortion. Has there been any consensus made as to what "issues" are expected with these phones? Obviously Motorola doesn't think the splotches are a defect, but with Costco I can return as many times as I want I did notice that my current Razr had a late November build date, which was interesting in light of the other thread around here saying the October (pre-launch) devices were the ones most likely to give trouble.

I'm not sure how a sampling of 3 devices ensures that the trait is shared by the thousands created, though I too have seen three Razrs all sharing these problems. I was hoping the White one would have been improved in that regard.
I know the yellow tint he speaks of, so do others. It's there.
Takes a lower brightness to really see it.

Sadly the longer I use the phone the less I notice the issue because I'm getting use to it but then I see someone else's phone and instantly see the yellow again.

Hi everybody
i really don't know if this is a defect or its normal i have a little small dot in my razr which become visible in a low brightness and neglectable in a high brightness, the dot itself a little bit lighter than the screen you can see it in attached pics , please anyone knows if i have to send it back or its normal View attachment 872635
View attachment 872636
sorry but in the second picture you will find a green dot in lower right corner this is a paint dot not the one i talked about
I had a light dot in the upper right quadrant of my screen, much like the one in your first pic. I figured it was a stuck pixel and it annoyed the hell out of me for quite a while. A few weeks ago I noticed it was gone and haven't seen it since. It must've gotten "unstuck".

same to me. so this is normal about super amoled pentile ?
Really don't know. But I started to think that I should kept my old Galaxy S with CM9 ICS. Much more comfortable to hold in one hand, nicer colors, ICS, smoother GO Launcher, better photos and more sensitive Wi-Fi. Of course, Razr looks cooler, has better GPS and radio and has LED. But is this "upgrade" worth for 480€? I don't think so...

Yep, read an article a few weeks ago about Pentile displays. The color tints are from the sub-pixels. I've found that it doesn't bother me too much until I pickup my X2. I do notice the yellow tint when I'm downloading or updating an app from the Market. All in all I think I can live with it. Just leave my old phone alone in it's drawer.
I did remember to get insurance this time!

I got my hands on a Razr x910 and it has screen burn. what are my solutions for this? Can i order a screen from someplace on the web ? what are my options?
please post a picture, i ve never seen a problem like this in a so short amount of time
Do you mean like black dots when the the screen is black?
I thought only plasma screens have burn marks
There are a couple apps that can attempt to reverse it, like Display Tester, fixes the burn by scrubbing the pixels with white and black nars, try it, couldnt hurt
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA

here is a picture of the burnt screen. its a yellowish tinge in the screen. whenever there is a white or light screen you can usually see them. However it doesnt effect games/videos, so its not to bad..
I ran that display tester and no luck!
I'm not even absolutely certain that's screen burn. AMOLED is kind of notorious for... inconsistent... colors (especially whites). And the RAZR in particular has some artifacts that are especially visible in the dark. They don't impair usage generally. But then the display I'm on typing at the moment isn't the best so it's hard for me to be sure how bad it is on your screen.
EDIT: scratch that, looked closer and I can make out the launcher icons at the bottom. That kind of sucks, actually.
its not to bad, and again only on light screens. I am always going to run a dark background so its unnoticeable. But when i run into some extra money ill just buy a new screen This place http://www.repairsuniverse.com/motorola-razr-lcd-screen-replacement.html
seems legit for a not bad price.
Might want to turn down your screen-on time as well. The only other RAZR I've seen like that was the demo unit at the Verizon store & its screen is on all the time.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot... I've never heard of this on a mobile device, a tablet, or a laptop. Although cheaper LCD TVs (like my POS Westinghouse) can have it happen. An impractical solution would simply be to leave it off for a few days. But, that's not going to happen with a phone. If you can find a video of static... like a TV screen on a channel with no signal... and can have it run in a repeating loop, leave it plugged in and run it over night. The random white/black pixels will clear out LCD burn in. It might take a few sessions.
There's an app called JScreenFix that can be used to exercise the display as well. This issue was a problem on the first generation Fascinates. The samoled screens would retain the image of the status bar clock or the whole status bar.
Technically, it's not burn-in I guess, it's more like pixel degradation in certain color spectrums.
