Hey guys,
I have a problem with my GS3's battery life. Until a few days ago, my battery would last almost a full waking day on a full charge, but one day I noticed my phone loosing juice a lot faster than usual, and now it can barely go a full six hours on normal use.
I have installed a lot of new apps over the past few days, so it could be one of those. Here are the apps I've installed since or just before the problem started: HEAVY sword, Clash of clans, Wheres my water, Instamessage, Vector, an old version of Riptide GP2 and Instaframe.
But I suspect it could be a hardware problem as the phone warms up after a little while of normal use, and warms up a lot after a while of heavy use. I know phones warm up under pressure, but this phone gets uncomfortable after a few minutes of browsing.
I've looked at other GS3 battery issues on this and other forums, but nothing like my problem. One day it's perfect then all of a sudden BOOM. Just so unexpected.
Really hoping it's just a rouge app, so if anyone has has battery issues with any of these apps please notify. So yeah please help! :crying:
P.S: It also warms up alarmingly while charging.

Might be one of those apps. Try installing betterbatterystats to see what kind of process is heating up your phone.
I installed better battery stats but that might have not been necessary because all I did was uninstall one app that I had for about a week, and Viola! Problem solved! I still wanna keep this thread open since it's just been one day, I wanna see if the phone stays fine for at least a week before declaring problem solved. Thanks!
Which One did you unistall?

I can't remember, I might have uninstalled a couple. BTW, just to compare, how long does your GS3 usually last? Mine seems to go for eight hours max, and warms up alot. Maybe its normal?

I use SystemPanel to monitor running processes on my phone. I recently installed SimplyHoney 3.9 with a Bullet JVP kernel. It was working great for a week or so, but now all of a sudden I am noticing that my battery is dying. Fast. Really fast. So I went to check SystemPanel to see what was hogging up my CPU time. That's when I saw that my CPU was pegged at 100%, and that the SYSTEM process was responsible for about 80% of my CPU time over the last 8 hours, and that it was often times running at 100%.
Rebooting doesn't help. I was thinking about reflashing, but I am pretty doubtful that will help. But you never know Anyway, is there a good way to see exactly what in the system process is misbehaving?

I was getting around 30 hours too. But now I can't get much past 12. Something changed, that's for sure.

change suddenly or do it a bit at a time ??
maybe something you downloaded ??
could do a virus check, doubt you'll have a virus but its worth a shot ??
Download Android Assistant from the Market (it's a free app), go under tools, and look at the Battery Use section. Should let you know what's causing the battery drain. However, if you tend to use light or white wallpaper, leave your phone screen on a lot, and at max brightness, your problem isn't software related
Basically, I installed cm9 RC1, and everything was working great.
Interface and all my apps were working super smooth.
I was getting 4 hours of straight use on a single charge! I was super impressed.
Yesterday, the phone froze out of nowhere. Couldn't get any response at all, had to pull the battery. The cpu was pretty warm too. It has gotten warm through normal use before on other roms, but that had disappeared when I flashed this one.
After rebooting, it tells me the battery is less than 4%, which is very strange since before freezing it was more like 20% full.
Now after this happened, I'm getting literally half the time on each charge. Instead of 4 hours with 15% left I'm getting 2.5 hours and 4% warnings telling me I need to charge.
Any idea as to what is going on?
I'm using betterbatterystats, and according to it, my deep sleep mode is working properly. The apps I use are showing the same kind of usage they did before. I can't figure out what the hell is going on here.

Questions belong to Q&A.
Do a full wipe. That's the best solution. After that, if it happens again, report here.

as stated by the guy above, do full wipe/data factory reset, about the 20>4% battery can be due to when the phone has been forced turned of or anything, happens to me when i get the same problem (almost)
Did full wipe last night. Battery life is still half and the cpu is getting very warm just while web browsing.

Voltage problems ... just like mine. Freezing, overheating. Self rebooting too?

Only completely frozen the one time. I did get a random lag spike earlier though. Haven't had any random rebooting that I'm aware of, but it could be doing it when I'm not looking..

If you have booting sound notification you would know. If this happend only one time, then its hard to judge for me - my phone was living its own, mad, life constantly. ( freezes, reboots , sound looping ) And by this in the same time was destroying mine
Hope somebody else will be able to tell you more.

Am envious to those who managed to use their phone for more than a day. I bought this phone for about 2 weeks now and have done the normal full charge for 8 hours on the first time. Since then, I have fully charged twice and let the battery gone flat once. I have flashed Neutrino rom and currently Latveyit rom, and the battery last best 12 hours so far.
I charged the phone to 94% at about 7pm and just made two calls and two text messages. I did a navigation on maps for about 15mins max. By about 11pm, battery is at 57%, I play some games for about 10mins and went to bed, in the morning it's about 35%. I realise that the first 50% really goes fast and after that it's pretty decent until less than 20% and it drains fast again. Background application I have are the normal chat programs, whatsapp, viber, kakaotalk, skype and ebuddy. I have waze running in the background although I think it shuts off after 15mins. I have a mix of wifi and 3g usage, usually on wifi though. Is this normal?
edit: I also have Lookout antivirus running
All your chat programs running in the back ground prevent your device to sleep correctly, they wake it up every time they check if there is a new message.
Try to keep only the apps you use and try for each app to increase the check delay or disable it.
The antivirus does help.
2 weeks is a bit early to make a comment about the battery.
Download Battericalibration from the market and use it every shift rom change.
Read about topic on the forum but not become a maniac in "battery life".
If the screen stays lit for 5-7 hours the battery will be empty in like 7-8 hours. If you only speak 1 hour at it the battery will be empty in 3 days.
All depends on how you use it!
Sorry for bad english.

I thought that the chat programs will only cause problems if there are frequent messages since they're base on push?
2 weeks is early? How does that affect the battery's performance? I thought when it's new, it's most optimum and slowly degrades through time? The screen was off most of the time unless I was doing anything I mentioned or just checking the time which is just on, check then off. I don't think I am paranoid over the battery life, just curious how to get it over a day.

In my opinion the battery reaches her max in 3-4 weeks.
Download the app from the market and use it after every rom change.
I didn't called you paranoic, just that you mustn't be so worried.
My recomandation for a longer battery life is CM7.
GOOD DAY!
Read forum for more details.

You might try 1Ghz faux kernels as well. They seemed to have helped my battery life considerably.
Chek out what apps you have running in the background and be sure you set youre network yourself (my phone was always changing from 2g to 3g and after i selected the network myself it gave me a 1day + boost .
And you shoud know that the litium polimer batteryes are affected by cold temperatures.
I wish you luck!
I did use cm7 (neutrino) and got about the same battery life span as the current rom (laytveyit), and am currently on the faux 1ghz kernel. Anyway, I will see how it performance in the weeks to come and hopefully the newer version of the rom will improve it. I thought cold temperature helps preserve the battery's life span?
EDIT: Thanks for all the advice!

Lol all those chats are you problem imo
The "standard" apps used to figure out what's eating your batteries are:
BetterBatteryStats: for wakelocks
CpuSpy: to tell if you phone is going into deep sleep or not
Built in Battery Usage: to see a pretty graph and tell what's using the most juice
SystemTuner: I just recently started playing with this, lots of information.
Look up BetterBatteryStats here up XDA. There's plenty of threads on how to use it. Look up wakelocks.

I agree. I'd try that. plus look to see part of the phone is draining the power (system, apps etc.) My battery lasts all day, unless i use it a lot. But I noticed when i flashed a new rom on it, it was like a brand new battery. Standby lasted for days, Not a day..
Mine's good
my battery lasts all day when i don't play games for long periods of times.
Better than my battery. Mine dies within a matter of 3-4 hours. Phone idle is my only culprit when looking in the battery usage. I've never figured it out, just kind of dealt with it for the moment. My phone does get really hot a lot. Norm running 112F. Anyways, I had one of my volume buttons sticking.. The internal button, not the pushing one.. and I assume that is what caused it to overheat. I dunno. Hope my ranting helped at least brainstorm your situation.
Wait, did you fix it? I have the same problem, and I notice the top volume button on mine is a bit thinner than the bottom one (although my cameras aren't working either), was this really the culprit for you?

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I'm no gamer, but I didn't faced any heating issues so far.
Maybe I can't speak about heat as I used to use a galaxy S4 exynos (it's a portable cooker in case you don't know, easily reaching 96°c when just browsing on battery), this never heated, the temperature is about 45°c and it never felt uncomfortable hot, actually it never felt hot even in high external temperatures, I don't game on my phone, also I don't do highly demanding tasks, but I guess this phone can stand very well against whatever demanding task you want..
Ya very less heating in rn4
This phone is cool as... Hm, how to explain this.
Imagine hell.
Now imagine it has frozen.
That's the heat level of RN4. Snapdragon 625 does it job.
My phones been fine, up until this last few weeks...
Where I can't hold a charge for more than half a day... And even running phone a USB socket on the computer, the phone still discharges faster than it can charge. Battery getting hot too... I've tried looking to a culprit app that might be churning the cpu. But even process Explorer isn't showing high cpu use from any given app.
The battery app which shows what apps drain most doesn't seem to show it either.
Really worried and nearly giving up. Might do my first factory reset in the 2 years I had this phone. Maybe time to root it and install another rom, Any suggestions?

Just trying to comfort you - you are not alone!
First, it's my secondary phone and I use it only when I travel. So not sure since when that happens. Maybe since a week or so.
Now I can lose like 30% in one hour, and the phone gets really hot. I used the last 2 days. Example, this morning it had 100% after overnight charging. I went for breakfast and lost 30% in one hour (rarely use the phone when I was out).
Then I charge a little in the car, phone went went from 58% to 64%. Then for no reason battery life was normal again and by the end of today I had about 20% - and then suddenly withing 20 Minutes it went dark.
I have the phone for about 2 years, this problem is very new.
What I try right now after reading stuff on the internet, so it must be true:
Remove all updates to Google Duo (this app can't be removed) and disable the Auto-Update for it in the PlayStore. Lets see..... (it's an app I never used, had to lookup what it actually is). Did that 15 Minutes ago and phone is already much cooler.
Ok uninstalled updates to duo and blocked auto update in playstore... ill see if that helps... Thanks for the tip
I must admit though, this had made me consider getting a new phone... but I dont really want to the phones good (when its working right) does all i need i to do.... Sure newer phones are a tad flashier but not enough to make me jump to get a new one.
Wow, That appears to have worked..... I mean its not really long enough yet to tell but it does appear to have stopped the fast draining and heat... At least for the first few hours....
Thanks
So if it really is duo causing this battery drain, why do no battery analysers seem to show that?
And is it doing it to all smart phone with duo and I guess it's latest patch installed?
Has duo been spying on us? Has it been running the camera and watching us while we sat on the loo, which I'm soooooo currently not doing..........
Thanks! The recent heat issue after an update had me thinking i need a new phone. I really like this phone, its lasted me by far the longest, and best run times of all I have ever had. I was worried about fire, did a full factory reset with no installed apps, but heat was still there. I removed updates to Google Duo, and stopped any future updates as listed above, and its running cool and clean again.
Once again thanks for this post!
Yep can confirm now after a few days... no heat no fast draining... Google Duo was the culprit... is it a but that just affected mediatek cpus? Or do all android phones suffer this bug? is anyones heads rolling at google for this farce?
ITs fine and good...... no options.
While charging and playing games or using heavy data apps.... it wont get heated like expected when connected to electricity.
When on power banks it works otherwise , gets charged and increase in temperature.
One of the best thermal performance I have seen on a smartphone, thanks to the Snapdragon 625 chipset powering the phone. It had no competition back when it was launched.
Using this phone for gaming almost baked my hand
