I have a stock rooted 4.4.1. The OTA 4.4.2 came through. I used Root Keeper and did a temp unroot. Then I installed the update. At first there was the android with an exclamation point and underneath that "Error". I turned it off and back on. Now the Exclamation android is there and the words, "No Command." What do I do?
You will need to load a stock image via ADB if there is no OS. You can also use Skipsoft or Wugfresh toolkit to automate the process. Both talk you through the process. I use Skipsoft because incan never get drivers to load with Wugfresh, but in all likelihood it is my laptop that causes this. Others never have this issue.

Same issue. Very scary. I solved it by downloading a stock odexed 4.4.2 ROM. Use the wug nexus tool to flash tarp recovery and ouch the zip to the tablet while in the recovery. Flash the ROM via the recovery. Once installed. Let it start up. Then use the tool again to flash the stock image. And root it. And your set. In wanted to be 100% stock. So after u flash the stick ROM via the recovery you can just keep it there.

Going from 4.4 to 4.4.2... I was able to get back to 4.4 by flashing stock without formatting user data but it was lame. I wish someone had a clue why this is happening? I was stock rooted and did have appops but didn't making any permission changes.
I've read this is happening to stock unrooted n4, n5, n7, and us on n10's. I've even read Google is replacing devices for users that don't know how to fix the problem as its over their heads.

I had exactly the same problem and fixed it in the same way. I guessed it was because I was rooted and I had messed with so many things (using xposed, tibu) but it seems that is not the case. Very weird...

Fairly new to safestrap - just inquiring on the correct way to update my file.
Should I apply the update on both partitions? Only my 'safe' partition, and keep my 'unsafe' stock should I ever need to copy/recover?
Just curious, but want to apply.
Thanks in advanced.
You will need to remove safestrap completely to take the update, if I'm reading your post right you are on an old version anyway, so save root, take the update then get the newest version of safestrap, you will have your stock slot for the stock jb rom and up to 4 slots for installing custom roms
Sent from my NookColor using xda app-developers app
I'm on the latest version of safestrap and have 4 or 5 available ROM slots.
Is it necessary to remove safestrap entirely (losing my current rom's data, settings, screens such) just to install the update?
That's been my experience,if your running roms off the ics build then they won't work with jb anyways

I was running the christmas leak of JB before getting the OTA. I have safe strap installed, totally forgot to back up my root, and my update when through without a hitch. I did lose root for a second, but I was able to miraculously restore it with voodoo anyway (must have had a back up somewhere). I didn't touch safe strap either and my install went fine. This was a bit surprising for me, as I've had to rsd back to stock for other updates.
thanks!
I can confirm that safestrap won't affect getting the ota, just got mine although i thought i already had it from the march 8 soak some threads said that was the official, anyway the download and install went good butbi lost root voodoo did not work for me, i was able to restore root with the razr blade exploit! If anyone has to go that route make sure you push the home button in the smart actions app and not the one on the phone, it took me several times before i figured out why it kept failing

Are you running the 98.72.16.XT912.Verizon.en.US - Jellybean 4.1.2 update? if so, Can you tell me if you can get safestrap after already having updated to the latest stock update? and I am rooted.
Yes, thats theupdate i'm on andi see no reason why you could'nt get safestrap, i never uninstalled it before the update and it appears to be worrking on the new build although i can't boot the custom rom i have on slot one, i was running the android aggression rom, don't know if i deleted it when i did factory reset on my stock rom or if its just not compatable with the update

Hey everyone, I have a question...so I rooted my phone a couple of months ago and never got around to installing a custom rom. So as of right now I have the stock 4.3 (sch-i545), I never done anything besides rooting it. I just received an update for the stock rom and my question is, could I just update it while my phone is rooted without voiding the warranty and or bricking it? Much obliged for your time

If all you did was rooted, and didn't delete any apps, make any changes to files, etc., it should work. It won't brick your phone if it doesn't work, it will just reboot and tell you it failed.

My understanding was that you need to be absolute stock to take an OTA. Have you seen anyone say they've been able to OTA a rooted phone?

If all you did was root the phone, you will be able to OTA... BUT,
This OTA update will install NC5 on your phone and add the lovely Knox warranty void as well.
As far as I can tell, at this time, therd is NO way of rooting the Verizon S4 after updating to NC5.
If you look under "About Phone, Status.. Device Status, if it says OFFICIAL, you'll be good to go for OTA.
But remember... no Rooting under the new OTA with verizon, until one of the XDA Genius finds a solution for us zombies.

I tried to OTA on rooted phone and it failed.
Don't like to do a factory reset, so I basically only want an OTA update. Cant stick anymore as my phone is driving me nuts, my phone screen keeps on going black and locking every few seconds when I wake the screen from sleep

Go here:

You can go to MK2; the latest version of Jellybean.
You can then either root and stay there.
You can root, install safestrap then go to a rooted KitKat (NC5) and keep the MK2 bootloader.
You can ignore all rooting and mods and take the OTA and go to a crippled NC5 with no root.
Hope that helps.

Yeah I used the OTA update and my phone was rooted. Also every time I turn(ed) on my phone it says samsung custom with an unlock this is on 4.4.2 and on 4.3 before. I checked to see if I have root, but I don't. Also superuser is still installed, says I don't have root (obviously). Except the weird thing is, that it says samsung custom still, and on the isis mobile wallet it says I cant use it because my device is rooted. I also used root checker to see if I was to double check and it says I'm not. I'm really confused... but hey at least the OTA update worked, i just cant wait to get root again because I will miss all my rooted apps. I didn't check to make sure they developed root either. which sucks but whatever.
I had root access on 4.4.2, downloaded OTA1 update, failed to install OTA2. I used Samsung Kies to install OTA2 and now I am on 5.0.1 without root access.
My phone isn't fully functional at the moment, with some apps not working and some completely broken due to no root access.
Is there a way for me to gain root access while already on 5.0.1? I see these ways to have rooted 5.0.1 but that is when you phone is rooted 4.4.2.
Thanks.
Nope. No way to root 5.0.1 yet.

Out of curiosity, since I'm in the same position... Can you flash Kit Kat firmware onto it with ODIN? Are you able to go back to a rooted 4.4.2?
No, no downgrading. A qFuse was blown, no way to go back. You can flash the stock 5.0.1 firmware with Odin to fix that though(the problems with the OP's phone)
I've had this pending on my phone for quite awhile, I haven't done it because I'm rooted. I decided one day to try it, my phone rebooted to TWRP and nothing happened. Which is exactly what I thought would happen. So I pulled the stock recovery from the stock rom and successfully flashed it. Tried the update again and I am getting a bit error from the stock recovery. The phone goes into "wtf just happened" mode and I have to do a battery pull and reboot. Which works fine. I don't really want to backup everything and re-root and reinstall everything, so does anyone know what my bootloader isn't seeing, but needs to see in order to push the update through?
Also, my phone isn't reading my brand new 64gb SanDisk evo suddenly. Was reading it fine last week... And ideas?
I'm on stock rooted ZV8 with sprint naval kernel.

partitions may be zv4/zv6 on your phone? that may be why you cant do the OTA. what about dirty flashing stock rooted ZVA(not recommended, but works great for me)? there is a navel kernel for it also. Make a backup and if you dont like it, flash back? what connectivity fix does the ZVA update claim? I thought the only (LISTED) update was they added factory reset protection?
He can't take the OTA cause he has TWRP installed. OTA will only install with stock recovery. Probably will need to use the flashtool to go to complete stock if you want to receive the OTA.

Guess I should have read that better, sorry. As stated, try the rooted ZVA. OTA can be stopped due to edited build prop, debloating, etc. So complete stock through flashtool or flashing a rooted ZVA would be the only way to get to the new version.

I was able to accomplish a Full Root on the latest OTA update on the phone.
Previously I was running Stock 4.4.4 KitKat with SuperSu and had issues with the OTA, since I had removed Apps.
I installed the Stock 4.4.4 ftf to the phone using the flashtool.
Then was successful in receiving the Prompt to update.
After Update, I installed. "Kingroot" for android. just google it. NOT KINGOROOT or any other.
After running kingroot, King User was installed.
In my experience, no other root method will achieve full root. I was not happy with using Kinguser, since i was a Supersu fan. But anytime I successfully removed kinguser, to swap for Supersu, I had lost partial root access, and could not uninstall apps. I could only Freeze.
I also tried Superuser, but only kinguser allowed me to fully uninstall bloatware, and other apps from the phone.
Just thought I would share.
Thanks, Iambedook. Every experience helps. Kingoroot got me into trouble once before in the past.
Can you flash back to 4.4 from 5.1.1?

I'd love to try this, but I'm kinda unwilling/aprehensious to take the chance with rooting apps. Can you confirm that you can use flashtool to revert back to 4.4? I just know Verizon would block such a thing in an update, they can be jerks. (like the moto razr maxx hd) Any insight is appreciated.

Yes, you can revert back to 4.4.4 through Flashtool. Doing so though, you will not have Advanced Calling or the refreshing Lollipop UI. Also, unless you do something about it, you will be promptly reminded all the time to update to 5.1.1.

Giga,
If I use this method to root 5.1.1., can I install dual recovery and Camera 2 and the FM tuner app? I'd also like the updated flashlight you put together but don't see that as a separate install. Should I wait or go ahead with this method for root?
Thanks, Pat

You may root, but I would advise against anything else. the Z5 Camera is most likely not compatible for our phones on 5.1.1, and neither is the FM Tuner. It's a whole lot I can't touch base on yet.

I would also like a confirm if this. Because I'm sitting around and waiting for a rooted 5.1.1 copy for the phone. Im on 5.0.2 right now and all is working good but still waiting. Thanks all.

Just an FYI, after I needed to revert to 4.4.4. I was struggling to receive updates to get back to 5.1.1. I had to use the Flashtool, 3-5 times to get the correct update prompts to appear. If anyone else had similar issues when reverting back, let me know, but re flashing repeatedly worked for me.

Just scroll down to the z3v dev section.
I was actually able to flash the stock ftf coming 5.0.2. I had to flash it with default options the first time with it failing. I then found that I have to basically flash noting to clear the error on the phone by checking everything in exclude and the other exclude box where it shows its not displaying any files in the middle of the window.
Once that went through, I was able to upgrade from stock to .44 and then the the two updates for 5.1.1. After all that I reset to factory again to test on rooting the phone. I was too, able to obtain root with King Root. I was able to install zxrecovery and xposed with no problems. I'm actually used to King Root as I had to use it on the Verizon branded 7" tablet that didn't have any other possible methods previously. I also found that Busybox was slightly out of date (difference of 2.0) and installed to /sbin which wasn't too big of an issue.
Beyond that my phone seems to get pretty warm and typically complains about not charging even on a 2 Amp charger.

Hi there,
New to the forum. After several hours of reading and searching, I became bewildered enough to decide to register and post .
This thread looked promising. I'm currently on rooted 4.4.4 with this phone. I also have a custom recovery installed. Im trying to get to 5.1.1. As of right now, I assume my only option is to wait for a 5.1.1 ftf so that I can update, because the OTA updates won't work (phone reboots into the custom recovery and the update is interrupted).
Is there an easier way to get the OTA? Or am I stuck waiting for an ftf?
To be clear, my goal is to be on 5.1.1 with root. But at this point I don't think I can get to 5.1.1 at all.
