Does anyone know of an inline headphone adapter that has remote controls and I can plug my own earphones into? I'm talking about something like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Headphone-Adaptor-Control-Shuffle/dp/B002J1SCRQ
I heard iphone adapters like above kinda works for Mortplayer and Mixzing (one click pause, two click skip forward but not volume etc.) Anyone tried these or a better solution? I don't want to use the stock ones nor cut and solder a female jack. Thanks
I have one of those, I use it with my old 2nd gen iPod touch when I run... To be honest I've never tried it with my phone but I can test it tonight if you want, just lemme know what app you'd like me to test with. Personally I'm partial to Headset Button Controller since you can pair it up with any music app or even Tasker for other tasks... I still use HTC's stock player most of the time (unless I'm playing Pandora or stuff from my Amazon cloud), the lock screen controls are the most seamlessly integrated imo.
I can almost guarantee the volume buttons won't work for any function tho. I also have a Philips adapter that they used to sell at Target, it's like 3 ft long with the single button, microphone and 3.5mm jack both at the end of the cable... Used to be like $10, haven't seen it in a while tho.
Rather than spend $10+ on a cable tho, I'd recommend just gettin a solid set of IEMs from someone like Meelectronics with the mic/button integrated and positioned at a proper height in the cable. I bought my M9P for like $20 with a discount and according to many on Head-Fi they rival some of the $50 IEMs... They definitely sound better than my old Senheisser CX300 (paid like $60 for those but that was years ago when there were next to no budget IEMs).
You know, unless you have a very specific need for the adapter or you already have a high end pair of headphones.
My 2c
I preorder these http://www.klipsch.com/image-S4A-headphones
I wonder how the Android version of the S4 will handle volume control in conjunction with their app... Could make it worth the price, generally they're nice but not quite worth $100 from what I've read (again, Head Fi's a great place for headphone comparison etc).
I have a Acoustic Research Bluetooth adaptor that turns any headphones/speakers into wireless Bluetooth headphone/speakers. It has controls on it for skipping tracks and volume. It works perfect and I love it!!

i got the klipsch promedias which are basically the same, and the control definitely works but both the music and the phone app try to handle the events. so double-clicking it skips to the next song and at the same time redials the last number. it works well for pause/resume though.

Pretty sure that is your rom you're using.. they haven't properly switched the remote to only work when in a call state or some such. Remote shouldn't do anything but control the music app unless the phone is ringing or you're already using it.

i agree, i should have mentioned my phone is completely stock with the latest firmware update.
Wait, so we can buy headphones which have the iPod like remotes on the cord right? Haven't been sure and didn't want to take the plunge yet.

Would you be able to test it with stock Sense music player? I'm wondering if it would make pause and skip next tracks.
My M9P's button didn't work with the stock player on the EVO 4G, which is why I started using Headset Button Controller (which solves the issue and allows me to keep using the stock player), I've yet to try it on the 3D tho. I'll try it tonight with the headphones and both the adapters I mentioned. It might surprise me, I noticed the 3D cuts volume to 50% automatically when you plug in headphones, that's something the 4G definitely didn't do!
Alright, sorry about that, I fell asleep last night prior to testing this. I tested the short 2-3" Belkin iPod adapter that was linked before, as well as the longer Philips adapter with a mic that I mentioned, and my own Meelectronics headphones with in-line mic/button. They all worked exactly the same despite the fact that the first one doesn't have a microphone, the electric signal they all send thru the third marking on the 3.5mm jack is the same after all.
On a stock EVO 3D, one press of the button on any of them will start the music player (with the phone locked or oherwise), and a second press will obviously pause it. A double click or press will dial your last dialed number, and pressing and holding will invoke voice search just like long pressing the search button. Pressing the button while the phone rings answers the call as expected and pressing it again hangs up. There's no triple press functionality and the volume buttons on the Belkin thing did nothing at all.
With Headset Button Controller installed you can change any of that behavior, and assign functions to triple press, amongst a lot of other things... And it integrates just fine with the stock player, so if you want more control over your button functions, it's probably worth the $2.60-ish. If anyone wants it tested with any other app just lemme know, tho HBC probably covers the expanded needs of most even if your particular player doesn't.
HBC also has support for what it calls left and right buttons but these definitely don't correspond with the volume buttons on a standard iPod adapter, not sure what headsets have 3 buttons which HBC might recognize... That Kplisch set mentioned before might be one.
I have the Klipsch S5i & only the play & pause works, double tap radials the last call & the volume buttons are unsupported.

Dont discount the Bluetooth stereo headsets,
Did anyone ever answer the OP's actual question? I need an adapter for my own headphones with a pause/play button that will work on an LG Optimus. I do NOT want a Bluetooth option and I do NOT want recommendations for headphones. I have a set of headphones that I love, but they don't have a pause/play button. I'm also not willing to cut and splice/solder. I don't need volume or skip track buttons. I just need to be able to quickly pause the audiobook I'm listening to without unlocking my phone.
All I can find is adapters for iphones and ipods, but I need one for my android phone.
Is there any software fix or CWM fix available to get my iPhone headphone's mic to work on my GNote??
I use iPhone compatible headphones with Note (and Nexuses before that). Mic and play/answer button work without any modifications. Volume buttons do not work and I never saw a patch for that. Would be nice, given that headphones that came with Note now have volume controls.

What note do you have.... The att note did not come with headphones
And the Iphone earphone mic doesn't work
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
I've Seen people go back and forth on this issue and some say mic works and some say it doesn't. I don't know if its just my note and all the at&t stores I have been to but the mic on the IPhone headphones doesn't work with the note, neither did my skull candy 50/50's or the FIX's mics but all of them the buttons worked for play/pause, skip track but not volume. I went to an AT&T store and tried the Urbeats that are made for HTC phones it was displayed with the vivid and everything worked including Volume +/-, track skip, mic. So Really if you want something a little better than samsung oem headphone id go with the beats but if the price ($100) is off-putting just buy some samsung headphones they all should work for samsung weird phones. As a side note I really think that the accessory companies should push for all these phone manufacturers to adopt a standard 3.5mm jack it shouldn't be that hard.
This works for my Note
Just want to add to this old thread. I very rarely use headphones to answer my phones and don't really listen to alot of music. I am not very technically proficient so thought that if it had a jack that fit, they would work. WRONG! I found out my 50/50's were made for apple products and they won't work for my android phones. I was pretty disgusted about this cause I just bought 2 more pair on sale for $20.
Then I went on a research binge to see what will make them work with my Note i717. Found out they work with my Gnex pretty well- voice and mic, no buttons. But whatever I did, they were not reliable on my Note. I bought several adapters. The trrs adapter tail from BHphoto online- says it will switch the poles- ???- that makes me crazy to understand the 4 poles and wires and where they go. Tried the meelec. Both of these adapters did not work. Meelec said it wouldn't.
What did work was this- http://www.ebay.com/itm/390523085685?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
It's a right angle adapter- just a little plug-3.5mm Female to 3.5mm Male TRRS (4 Pole) Right Angle Gold Stereo Adapter- The mic works for calls, skype, etc, but you can't use the buttons to answer. The volume buttons don't work, but the headphones work great. This is the best fix and the adapter was only $6 shipped. So I went from a non working headset to a working one for sound, mic, and will look into apps to get the buttons to work. It would be great to get the mic button to work to answer and hang up.
On my galaxy nexus 9520 the 50/50's work without an adapter and the button answers the phone. Volumes buttons don't work either.

Hello
I wonder has anyone experieced this problem below?
I have a pair of Sennheiser mm30i and also pair of Klipsch s4i, both with inline mic and button control. What happen is, when there is an incoming call and when I use the control button to accept the call, the headphones (both of them) disconnect. I have to unpluy and re-plug the headphones. But if I slide the screen to accept the call OR using auto answer fuction, everything is just fine i.e. they don't disconnect and I can alo use the button to end the call. I have use both of the headphones on my S2 and they are fine also.
The above doesn't happen with the stock headphones.
My S3 is stock and I have messed around with any files.
Please could somebody kindly provide some suggestions.
Thanks
Ron
Well, for the S4i Klipsch, I currently owe the basic S4 and encountered no problems, but the S4i are designed to be iPhone compatible.
Another version of the S4 does exist for Android. So it might be that even if it used to work on your old S2.
The same goes for you other headset, once more Apple compatible but no instruction for Android device.
Maybe the differences between S2 and S3's hardware make your headphone unable to take a call.
But it's good point for me, I planned to buy a new headset with mic So by helping you out, I'm saving myself from buying the wonrg one.

It is strange that the central button works for volume adjustment, next trrack etc using the Headset button control app and Jays apps.
There are differencies betweek controlling the music player and the dialer
But as the stock headset works well, the jack port seems to be good and none faulty.
Anyway for 80$ the headset, they could make them to be iOS/Android compatible at least ...
not sure about ios , they seem to be in their little own world

Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a Xiaomi Piston 3 headset to use with my Nexus 6P, and I was disappointed to discover that I was unable to lower the volume of sound through the decrease volume button on the headset. I initially believed this was the result of a defective audio jack on my Nexus 6P, since the headset worked fine on a friend's Nexus 5X. However, after discovering reports of other people having the same issue with the Xiaomi Piston 3 headset, I did some tests to see if I could figure out what could be causing this issue.
I used three wired headsets with in-line remote controls (including volume) for my tests: the Xiaomi Piston 3, Samsung HS330, and Sennheiser Momentum In-Ear headset. All three headsets fully support in-line remote controls for Android devices, and they all worked properly on a Nexus 5X. Both the Xiaomi Piston 3 and Samsung HS330 had the same results, but the Sennheiser Momentum In-Ear headset had different results. Here are my results:
Xiaomi Piston 3 and Samsung HS330 headsets
Listening to music on the Google Play Music app: increasing volume and pause/play worked, but decreasing volume did not work.
Listening to music on the home screen with the Google Play Music app running in the background: increasing volume and pause/play worked, but decreasing volume did not work.
Listening to music with the screen turned off and With screen locked and Google Play Music running in the background: increasing volume and pause/play worked, but decreasing volume did not work.
Sennheiser Momentum In-Ear headset
Listening to music on the Google Play Music app: increasing volume, decreasing volume, and pause/play worked.
Listening to music on the home screen with the Google Play Music app running in the background: increasing volume and pause/play worked, but decreasing volume did not work.
Listening to music with the screen turned off and With screen locked and Google Play Music running in the background: increasing volume, decreasing volume, and pause/play worked.
I am not an audio expert, but I was surprised by these results. I have no idea why both the Xiaomi Piston 3 and Samsung HS330 headsets were unable to decrease sound volume, but the Sennheiser Momentum In-Ear headset was able to do so in most situations. I am also very puzzled as to why the Sennheiser Momentum In-Ear headset was able to decrease volume while in the Google Play Music app and while running the app in the background with the screen turned off, but running the app in the background while on the home screen caused the volume problem to occur.
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable on audio can make sense of these results. It would also be great if others who have a Nexus 6P and a wired headset with Android compatible in-line remote controls (including volume) can test them and post their results here. At best we might be able to find a pattern to this issue, and at the very least we can create a list of headsets with in-line remote controls that have been verified to work.

I have a couple of sets of the piston 2. My first 6P didn't even recognise anything was plugged into the headset. Would simply not play audio through the jack. I tried 3 more brands a Klipsch and Jaybirds and an Apple pair. The Klipsch recognised only 50% of the time and remote would not work other than Pause/Play. The Jaybirds played but remote did not work at all and Apple earbuds worked but only play/pause
I got a new 6P to replace that model and headphone situation is much the same however it recognises the Piston 2's but may have to plug in and out a couple of times and again remote does not work at all.
All these headphones work with the myriad of Android devices I've had this year and last including
Moto X Pure 2014, M9, S6 Edge, Edge +, Note 5, Moto X Style, Nexus 6, OnePlus 2, Xperia Z3 and even Apple 6 plus & 6S Plus ...
So clearly nothing physically with the headphones. I'm not sure WTF is going on with the headphone support and the 6P but suffice to say I'm extremely disappointed by it so far.

Thank you for posting your findings. I have seen posts on Reddit with Nexus 6P owners having issues with the Xiaomi Piston 2 headset. It looks like no one has had any luck with getting the in-line remote controls working, and some people are not able to play audio through it at all. The seemingly random results people are having is making me wonder if it is an issue with the quality of the audio jack on the Nexus 6P, the audio connector on the Xiaomi Piston 2 headset, or both.
Your results for the Apple earbuds are to be expected, as headsets designed for Apple devices can only pause and play audio on Android devices. I believe the Jaybird headset uses wireless Bluetooth, so that problem could be the result of a compatibility issue with the Nexus 6P's Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity (despite supposedly being backwards compatible). It would be greatly appreciate if you could post which model Klipsch headset you used, as that can help us create a list of headsets that have been tested out by Nexus 6P owners and the results people had.
Just for some background, that this has been an ongoing issue with android phones for a very long time.
The issue is how each manufacturer wires their headphone jack. Some headsets use the tip or the ring to transmit the remote signals over, and if the headphone jack in the phone is not able to "receive" this signal, or was not setup to get anything but the negative signal on the tip, then you are out of luck.
With there not being a true standard in how phone headsets are wired (the iphone has a way they do it, and then in android they have several ways that the manufacturers wire the phones and then the headsets have the same issues with this).
So... you need to figure out how the headphone jack on the 6P is wired, then we can figure out which headphones will easily work and which ones will for sure have trouble. I am betting that there is something that either has been leaked or was released by Huawei that you can find this out. I will do some poking around as well and see what I can figure out.
I use these, they work fine both pause/play and volume up and down.

True, although both the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 supported inline remote volume controls, and I do not recall either headset having this particular issue. You would think any headset with an OMTP connector would work fine on an Android device (as appears to be the case with my own tests on the Nexus 5X), but the results I have been seeing with the Xiaomi Piston 2 headset alone have been incredibly inconsistent. Hopefully you or someone else can make sense of these results, but for now I am sticking to the theory that the issue is related to both the headphone jack of the Nexus 6P and the audio connector of whichever headset is used on it.

Thanks for pointing that out. At some point I will make a list of everyone's results and post it in the OP.
I had a chat with Google support this afternoon about why he volume down button on my headphone remote doesn't work with the 6P, but it works fine with the 6. They said they're aware that some people are having issues and are supposed to elevate it and get back with me.
In the meantime, I found the "Android Wired Audio Headset Specification v1.1" which is the first link in Google if you search for that. It has reference values for resistances and tolerances and a test circuit.
Turns out the volume down button on my headset does not conform to the spec. It has a resistance of 616 ohms rather than the 470 ohm +/- 1% in the spec.
My volume up is 216 ohms, which also doesn't match the spec of 240 ohm +/- 1%, but evidently they made the tolerance wider than the spec, which suggests that the volume down tolerance could be increased as well like in the Nexus 6, but no guarantees there.

@matthewbudraitis thank you for the update. I subscribed to this thread, please keep us posted if you hear anything back from them.
I did hear back from Google, but they just asked a few questions about which headset I have and if it happens with all apps.
In the meantime, I did a little more research.
I tested both the Nexus 6P and Nexus 6 with some resistors to see how they work in relation to the spec. The Nexus 6P will recognize a volume down command from 330 ohms to 560 ohms, which explains why the 612 ohms in my headset isn't working. The Nexus 6 will recognize a volume down command from 390 ohms to 680 ohms, which explains why it WILL work with my headset and still work with the spec.
So then I started questioning why my headset would have 612 ohms anyway. From what I could find, 620 ohms is what Samsung and HTC have been using for a number of years and most Android-compatible headsets on the market have been sold to work with Samsung, not all android in general.
Personally, I think it would be best for customers if Google just made the official spec range work like the Nexus 6. It allows for both the current spec and the Samsung/HTC devices to work, which makes the Nexus phones more compatible with what customers already own. I hope the range can be expanded on the 6P with a software update. For my headset, I'm going to solder the correct resistors into it to make it work, but I know that's not a solution for most people.

I'm guessing this is 100% hardware driven and can't be changed in software. Which means we're stuck where we are at, aye?

I can't say for sure, but based on the test circuit in the spec, I'm assuming they're using a known voltage and resistor value in the device in series with these remote resistors to make a voltage divider. As the headset button resistances decrease, it puts a lower voltage on the mic terminal which can be read by an analog to digital converter in the device. The voltage set points would then be done in software, possibly at a device driver level.
Assuming it works like I think, the set points could be adjusted.
Anyone having issues similar to the Piston 3's (volume down button not working), check out ElementX kernel. Flar2 has included a patch to fix this. Piston 2's still are not working, but it looks like this is fixable in software. Fingers crossed.

I just found a partial fix for Piston 2 by trial & error, Remember all the buttons are still not functional yet, but atleast you can hear music using your headphones on Piston 2.
To make it work on your Nexus 6P, Press and hold any button on your headphones while plugging your headphones to your Nexus 6P. Again, none of the controls work but at least you can listen to music. Also, the inline mic does not work during calls

The gentleman who figured out how to fix the piston 3's is currently looking into a solution for the 2's. The issue has also been passed onto google engineers to look into.

Thanks!!!!! Great tip, I was worried about this, I can't believe I can't use my Pistons on my new Nexus 6P.
My two cents, you can plug in your headphones and then press any buton and they start to work, it is not necesary to press a button while you are connecting them.
I have a set of cheap in-ear earphones with a volume slider which works brilliantly. Is this problem affecting only a few 6P owners or is it applicable to button operated volume controls?
I realize you guys might not want to hear this, but my piston 2s have always worked perfect on my 6p. Controls and all, and they sound great with viper.

That is interesting. I thought this affected everyone. Just curious, do you know if yours are piston 2.0 or piston 2.1's. I have a white pair of 2.1's and a brown pair of 2.1's and both do not work.
UPDATE: nevermind, it looks like the 2.1's are the same as 2.0 with just a slightly longer cable, and different earpieces. They have the same internals so there shouldnt be a difference.

I just tested them again when I got home from work, and everything is working as it should. I just checked up and down volume and everything. I have the piston 2's with the white cord, silver buds etc... It is weird that so many others are having problems.

Hey XDA'ers,
When it comes to buying headsets, iPhones owners have about a million compatible headset's while android users have to always play the guessing game not knowing what works, not fun at all. This thread is here to help. I made a thread like this for the Nexus 6P that I felt was helpful and I thought Pixel and Pixel XL users could use the same info.
this is where this list goes to bed every night
so everyone report so we can get a nice big list, commenting with the following info can be helpful:
1. [IMPORTANT] The name of the headset and a link to the exact model you bought
2. Do both volume buttons and a Microphone work?
3. Headset sound quality? 1 (bad) or 5 (Perfect) You can elaborate if you'd like.
4. Anything else? .... or just tell me your proud of me unlike my mother and father jk, I'm awesome.
*You can include bluetooth headsets to give feedback but those won't be on the list. Bluetooth headsets never really have issues since bluetooth an open standard.
:good::good:
I have a pair of sennheiser momentums which are for android. They should work but I'll let you know in 12 days!

Sounds like a plan! :good:
Here's a few I tested to add to your list:
Xiaomi Piston v2
Yes. Tested with Poweramp, Google Assistant, and Phone. Volume up/down and play/pause/disconnect call/Google Assistant work from the 3 buttons.
Purely subjective, but 3.75.
Oddly enough, the v2 doesn't work right on last year's Nexus 5x, but works fine on the Pixel.
Xiaomi Piston v3
Yes. Tested with Poweramp, Google Assistant, and Phone. Volume up/down and play/pause/disconnect call/Google Assistant work from the 3 buttons.
Purely subjective, but 4.
The v3s work equally well on the Pixel and the 5x, and are much lighter weight than the v2s.
HTC One (m7) earbuds
Yes. Tested with Poweramp, Google Assistant, and Phone. Play/pause/disconnect call/Google Assistant work from the single button.
Purely subjective, but 3.5.
Not the greatest earbuds, but they came with my m7, and sound decent enough. Works fine with the Pixel.
I use the galaxy s7 earbuds and they work fine with volume control and play pause answer call and hang up call.
Dont go hating but Apple Earpods are good... 4 on audio scale but Volume buttons dont work.
Works great with my sennheiser momentum on ears

thanks for giving all this info :good:
OP has been with all the info
Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 for Android
Yes. Tested with Google Play and Skype. Volume and pause, skip etc plus in line works on skype
I guess 4 - as good as it ever is
Slightly louder in right ear but this might be imagination...
1. Degauss Labs Sabotage Royale 3 Button Headset
2. NO. Volume up launches Google Assitant. Volume down and middle button work fine.
3. Sound quality is very good I think: 4
1. Nocs NS500 Android 3 Button Headset
2. Yes. Volume up/down and middle button all work fine.
3. Sound quality is very good I think: 4
1. Samsung HS330 (aka OEM for Galaxy S4, S5, etc)
2. Yes. Volume up/down work. Mic works, mic button short press to mute or answer; long press to end call.
3. Sound quality = 3 to 3.5. I am not an audiophile but imo they are better than some regular earbuds.
1more triple driver working as expected
Amazon Premium Headphones
Can't post links yet.
All buttons work except volume up brings up Google Assistant
Decent for the price, frustrated they don't fully work as it took me a long time to find a pair that worked with my Nexus 5X (these did). I can't wear in ear buds so choices are very limited...
a-jays 5
the a-jays 5 work great, i got them for $30 CAD on black friday but they are worth more!
All the buttons work (vol-up and down, middle is play/pause and long press activates google assistant)
there is also an app that allows customization of the buttons
1. Klipsch X6i In-Ear Headphones
2. Volume buttons do nothing, but mic works fine and center button answers/ends calls and plays/pauses/FF tracks - long press brings up Google Assistant
3. Quailty - 4. Very clean reference sound but lots of cord noise is transmitted when walking or moving. Needs a bit more volume (voltage drive) to register the same db as other headsets. Mic works well for calls on the street, but does pick up some wind noise.
4. Klipsch has patented oval silicone ear sleeves that fit well and comfortably.
1. Logitech Ultimate Ears 600vi Noise-Isolating Headset
2. Volume buttons do nothing, but mic works fine and center button answers/ends calls and plays/pauses/FF tracks - long press brings up Google Assistant
3. Quailty - 5. I love these things. I've never owned a double or triple armature IEM so maybe I just don't know what I'm missing, but these guys have sounded great over the past 4 years. Mic is only good for indoor conversations. Picks up alot of wind and ambient noise
4. Cord could be much better, mine has separated from the plug due to stress and will need to be replaced, but the ear buds are going strong. The retail packaging includes two sets of Comply foam tips for awesome fit and feel
Just tried these with my Google Pixel 1....
1. 1MORE E1003 Piston Classic In-Ear Headphones
2. NO. Volume down not working at all. All other buttons working fine.
3. <unable to comment on sound quality, they'll be going straight back>
Desperate to find some new headphones for my Pixel 1. Its proving rather difficult to find a set that actually work. Google really cocked up the headphone jack on the Pixel 1. Suppose its a non-issue on their latest phone though since it has no jack.

Does volume down really work on these? I'd have expected the circuitry to be the same as the Piston Classics I've just tried. HOWEVER that post is from Nov 2016 so it's quite likely the one's I have are a updated version.

I'm still here
Although I recently upgraded to the Pixel 2. I tested the Triple Drivers like once with the 3.5mm to USB C adapter, and remember them to be working well, with full button controls.
Have you experienced no VOL-Down on other headphones? Honestly my first guess would be that you just got a lemon with a broken button. If Vol-up is working, it would be extremely strange for Vol-down to be broken by design. I'm Pretty sure the OMTP vs CTIA has more to do with the microphone working than buttons, but it might be worth checking out as well.
I will say the Triple drivers are champs, can take a beating, and sound spectacular. Still going strong today, although I have moved to 3rd party replacement buds. I could not find first party replacements.
https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/9/15590932/1more-triple-driver-quad-driver-review-in-ear-headphones The updated version would be the "quad driver." Vlad mentions both in the review. He's also a fan of the Pixel, so I bet he'd mention if there's any issues. Although I didn't reread before posting this.

Its a completely different playing field if you use the USB-C to 3.5mm adapter rather than plugging into the headphone jack. This is the first time I've ever had VOL-DOWN only issues. I immediately had the same suspicions as you, i.e. fault button, but I tried them with an iPhone and the button worked fine. The button also works fine if I use the headphones on my Pixel 1 via the USB-C to 3.5mm adpater (that came with my wifes Pixel 2).
