Hi all
I managed to format everything on my Z ultra
Now while I check all the recovery softwares they need that my Ultra should be added as a USB device. But it always connects as a Media device
I tried switching on the USB debugging but still its the same
Can anyone help me with adding my ZU as USB device and recovering my data ??
P.S. : The device is not rooted and I am on the 4.3 update which released yesterday,
Thanks
Hmm, enabling USB Debugging usually kicks mine into USB mode, but the times when that doesn't happen i try another USB port on my laptop and it works. You can also try these apps: Click and click.

Hey Thanks for your reply.
But since my phone is not rooted could be an issue ?? The apps you shared require root as well

Sorry if this is irrelevant... but maybe this is what you are talking about?
If you want your device to be in MSC (Mass storage mode), which is like external HDD and not the MTP (Media transfer mode) then go into
settings -> Xperia Connectivity -> USB connectivity and choose MSC

If you are on Windows: Samsung drivers installed?
Did you try different USB port?
Is USB debugging enabled? Settings->Applications->Development
What are the USB settings on the phone? Settings->Applications->USB settings
Mass storage mode doesn't work for me on Win 7 x64 I just use the media player setting and it works the same way as mass storage should.
It works for me just fine. One time it did do the flickering USB icon thing, but that turned out to be because the cable that I was using was going bad. It sounds like this may be what's going on in your case?
I clipped this from a post I made a few months ago...

For those of you having a problem with Windows 7 recognizing your Vibrant ... here is how I fixed it on my system.
*Note: You do not need to load any special USB drivers for your phone to be recognized in Mass Storage mode in Windows 7.
*Warning: You follow these instructions at your own risk ... no screaming at me if you try it and something gets screwed up!
1) Navigate your way into the Device Manager / Universal Serial Bus Controller
2) Uninstall the device(s) "USB Root Hub" (My system had 2 listed)
3) You will lose mouse and keyboard control (because you just removed the USB Hubs)
4) Reset your PC and allow Windows to boot normally.
5) Go back to the device manager and wait for all of the "!" marks to go away as windows re-installs the USB Hubs and reinitializes all of your devices.
6) Make sure your Vibrant is in mass storage mode and has USB debugging OFF
7) Plug in your Vibrant via the USB cable and be amazed as windows recognizes your device and assigns the drive letters. After you select the mount option on your phone you will have normal access via windows explorer.
Hope this helps some of you out there !!!

Looks like a drivers problem to me, if you didnt already, try to reinstall latest version of Kies (but dont forget to kill the kies process before using Odin if you plan to use it)

I tryed to reinstall Kies and drivers but with no succes.
I have this problem too and i resolve it by turn the plane mode on, don't know why but now all is ok ..
Try this.
1. Go to settings --> wireless and network --> usb --> usb mass storage
2. connect the usb cable
3. turn the usb mass storage (the android icon changes to orange now)
Go to my computer and you will now see phone and sd card storage as seperate....you should be able to copy fine now.

Hello!
I know this topic is old but I had the same problem with my Galaxy Note this morning and the solution was to disable USB Debugging.
Just to at least mark this topic as solved.

I had this problem with my Galaxy Note 4. I was using the original USB cable which was supplied with the phone. The error was showing up at random stages of the file transfer process - sometimes near completion, sometimes after a second or so; which indicates to me that it may be a hardware problem. So, I then tried using a different USB cable (cheapie from eBay), and it works fine! No brainer fix :silly::silly:
Same issue here - bad cable again in my case. Got a decent quality one and it works fine.
This worked on my Note 4 - Simple Settings -> Developer opions -> Check USB Debugging
Figured I would ask this since I can not find anything anywhere for the X2 and the usb host mode. I found a really cool app in the market to control my canon t3i from the phone but I have to be able to turn on USB Host Mode. I can't find anything about it on the phone at all.
I am rooted using - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315711 - that thread but I am still using the stock ROM.
Do I need to put a different ROM on in order to do the USB Host Mode?
Is it even possible to turn it on?

PC mode possibly? could be debugginf mode? try all the modes we have if one works then there you go. I have never heard of USB host mode
Here is the link - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202082 to the DSLR program I am talking about. Something about some phones can enable the USB host for communication between the phone and external devices while others cant.
I'm assuming you aren't sure how to enable USB Host mode? If that is correct, here is how to ensure it's enabled. This will work if you are on stock or a custom ROM (unless the custom ROM removed it which I doubt):
Click the Menu button and select Settings
Scroll down until you see Applications and select it
Select the Developer menu item in the Application settings menu you are currently in.
Ensure USB Debugging is checked. This is necessary and important.
After that, you can pull down the notification bar and you should see a "USB connection" option. You can select that and you'll get a new window with radio button choices. Mine has the following (running Eclipse 1.3):
PC Mode
USB Mass Storage
Phone as Modem
Charge Only
PC Mode allows you to access the SD Care from Windows and within ADB shell. In this mode, it allows access to what is on your internal and external SD card in the same window.
USB Mass Storage mode means that it will mount the internal and external SD cards as separate drives on your windows machine and your phone won't have access to them until you either disconnect the phone from the PC or else, go to a different USB mode.
Phone as Modem - I never use this but it allows you to use your phone as a modem for your PC. Ahh, the old days of modems. I remember running 300 baud. When I went to 1200 baud, I thought I was styling!
Charge Only - In this mode, it's only using the USB connection as a charger. You won't have access to the sd cards from within Windows, but they will be accessible from your phone.
It sounds like you want the "USB Mass Storage" mode from what you've stated.
Hopefully this helps.

First of all you need a kernel which has usb host mode enabled and a terminal.
You can check out this for information on USB OTG cables:http://tech2.in.com/how-to/accessor...sb-otg-cable-for-an-android-smartphone/319982
As, Levprez has pointed out you will need a kernel (not a ROM!) with USB OTG support.
Once, you have USB OTG support (and it is enabled) you can plug a device into the normal usb connector on the USB OTG cable...if it works at all...it should detect and setup the device like normal.
I recently test OTG support on my DX2, and it appears to be working. (firmware is 4.5.1A-DTN-150-30, kernel is 2.6.32.9-00005-g2440aba)
To verify status of USB OTG support, check if /proc/config.gz (compessed configuration file used for building kernel that currently installed in device) has 'CONFIG_USB_TEGRA_OTG=y' in it. If so, your kernel supports otg mode.
However, in order to connect usb device to phone you need a special otg cable with support of external +5V power. Phone itself doesn't provide required power for connected devices, which may be bad - you need additional power source for usb devices - or good - while connecting other devices you can also charge phone from external source.
Initially supported various HIDs (keyboards, mice and some gamepads) and mass storage devices (flash drives, external hdds and such), though flash drives require manual mounting within scripts or terminal emulator and, obviously, require root. Alternatively, you can add other drivers (because it's linux and source code of kernel available) to support any device you need, for example drivers for other android device xD

hi please let me know if you figure this out? because i also have a droid x2 and a rebel t3i and have the same idea in mind! it works on my transformer prime, but that is too big to be useful on the go. I don't think too many devices support the usb host mode except very new ones?
This is probably a common problem, I saw lots of threads but I can't find any solutions to it, and I really want to make my phone faster i.e. root
Phone: LG P990 (Optimus 2x)
Problem:
Phone not detected by the computer when connected through USB.
What I tried:
1. Factory reset (only data)
2. Cleaning the port with a toothbrush
3. Uninstalling and re-installing drivers
4. Replacing the cable I was using with the OEM one (I lost my original together with my charger)
5. Plugging into different computers and USB ports
6. Checking and unchecking the option of connecting through mass storage only
7. Enabling and disabling USB debugging
What's so incredible about my problem is that the phone actually knows that it is connected to the computer - the USB tethering option is available and it says that USB's connected - but the USB connection icon on the status bar for mass storage doesn't show up. I'm not sure if it's a software or hardware problem. So any ideas how to fix this?
Bump.
Android version: 2.3.4
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Firmware version: LGP990-V20d
Please help!
Just some updates.

Just wanted to share some tips to those who wanted to re-enable the Mass Storage Mode on their Android 4.2.2
1. Connect your phone to a computer (The device will be connected in MTP mode as default)
2. Reboot your phone while connected to the computer
3. Wait until you see the USB icon on your Notification Bar
4. You will now have an option to select Mass Storage henceforth

I'd appreciate a "THANKS" if this helps you.

Nope this does not work as advertised in the OP. Neither is there a "USB mass storage" option anywhere in the device's settings. Thanks anyhow.
Update: still no. I rebooted several times. No joy. I tried rebooting into recovery mode-- disabled if it's connected to a PC. Still no.

Will this option work for jelly bean 4.2.1?
No joy. This either never worked or this trick is obsolete. I have plain stock kitkat 4.4 on my phone (htc one google play ed) and mass storage appears to be completely removed now. stuck with sh!tty MTP/PTP that does not permit transfer of non "media" files. Best solution I can see is getting an SFTP client and xfer over wifi. Why oh why is Google turning evil and doing hacker-hostile and becoming as annoying as Apple?

I feel you. I stopped using anything i[whatever] for any reason because of the stupidity of the storage and transfer software. Now google is doing it. Must join google+ to give feedback on an app? Seriously? Can't access content on my SD card unless the file type meets an arbitrary set of criteria? I'm just waiting for Ubuntu Touch to be ready for an SGH-T989 and I'll dump google next. Either that, or I go back to a damn flip phone and leave all this crap behind.
@bejunk
thanks for the build.prop suggestion, although i cant get the option "MTP, PTP, UMS" in Storage setting, at least i can use UMS...
here's what my opinion;
using MTP;
-faster data transfer
-less reliable; prone to get "cant copy file, phone not responding"
-and if delete file while in phone, connect to PC the file is still there
using UMS;
-slower data transfer
-more reliable than MTP, in my case its secure, no error unless youre "massaging" your phone (blame cable)
-if delete a file while in phone, connect to PC the file is deleted (which is good, no evidence )
UMS is better than MTP in my case
btw, im GT-i9100G SlimKat 4.4.2 (yes, i know this is Sony section)
nope

I do not yet have root on my trasformer pad, until last night I thought that UMS was required to get root. I just need to install the fastboot drivers which I thought I had already done. I will update if it turns out I'm wrong (again), all this stuff with the ADB's, fastboot and cmd is confusing me; I have had to root, unroot, wipe, flash etc. loads of times on my galaxy ace but all that had could be done from the phones recovery almost instantly. geuss i'll just have to sort of evolve and get used to it being harder to root and install a recoveries now!
