Having Android tablet with 3G and capable of making phone calls I wonder if I could use small standard GSM phone as bluetooth dialer for tablet? This is to avoid using bulky device for phone calls.
Yes, there is selection of bluetooth dialers from $30 and up on ebay, but could I use small plain GSM phone with bluetooth (and without SIM) for that purpose? Or some tiny Android smartphone?

I have a question for everybody! Is it possible to connect to the internet with a smartphone (in my case LG P500) via bluetooth using an ordinary phone ( Sony Ericsson Elm). I'm wondering if it's possible to use an android phone instead of a computer. I know it's much easier to swap the sim cards between those two phones, but I don't actually have a good network coverage in my countryside and i use to put the SE Elm somewhere outside of the house near by the window and use bluetooth to connect with my laptop from inside of the house Thanks! Hi, I have a rooted HTC Sensation 4G, ICS 4.03, T-Mobile carrier. I'm looking for an app that I can call forward my cell calls to my Magic Jack number, which I have a landline type cordless phone system and handsets connected to, as well as also ring my Sensation. That way, when I'm at home, I can answer either of the 2 cordless handsets or the sensation, whichever is more convenient. I don't have a true landline, and the Magic Jack I keep as an emergency backup, but since it has extra handsets, would like to take advantage that. All I give out is my cell number, so I want to use that as my main number. I know so far, most if not all call forwarding services don't allow you to answer the phone you're forwarding from. I'm looking for the loophole that allows you to or a new app that allows this. I'm trying to avoid spending $100+ on one of the new cordless phone systems that allow you to Bluetooth your cell phone calls to it also. Thanks much.
I have a 3g tablet that I'm using as my primary device. However, I'd like to make/receive calls using a smaller device that fits in my pocket. I could buy a bluetooth handset for around $50, but I'd rather use a spare android phone I have if possible.
I did some research, looks like there's no way to use the phone as a bluetooth headset. But...couldn't I use it via wifi? I'm thinking...enable the wifi hotspot on the tablet, so the phone connects to the tablet via wifi. Tablet receives a call. Somehow it magically forwards it via voip to the android phone. Ideally I could also make a call via the phone, though that's not necessary.
No, google voice won't work, as it's an Australian number.
And I do know about Tablet Talk. I need something for voice calls though, not texts.
It'll probably be suggested that I simply put the sim in the phone and use the hotspot featue on it to share with the tablet. Good idea, but the battery life on the phone is less than stellar. It might last an hour or two in that mode; the tablet can last all day.

Why can't you put another SIM card in your phone and enable call forwarding from the SIM that you use in your tablet to that in your phone? But first check whther there is any call forwarding charges impossed by your carrier.

Yup, it costs to forward calls. I could just give two numbers out, but that'd be a hassle for those calling me.

Hmm.. I see .. .. I am not sure whether there is an app which forwards voice call via VIOP.. another suggestion is put your primary SIM card (the one in tab now) in your phone and get a spare SIM card for your tab for data connection..
Cos SMS'es are not forwarded, and that is a not trully-carrier free solution.

I've thought of that too. What I'm aiming for is to have one primary device. I don't want to need to carry a tablet and a phone. So...tablet is primary, it handles all data and voice. Phone would serve same purpose as a bluetooth headset; if it's there, it could handle voice calls. If not, then calls still go through the tablet as usual.
I know the hardware is more than capable of doing this.
I may just end up getting one of those bluetooth headsets that act like a regular phone. Would (should?) double as a bluetooth audio receiver. Just hate spending more money when I already have something (spare android phone) that should do the job.
I have an ATT Samsung galaxy tab 2 10.1 SGH-i497. I am trying to see if I there is a ROM that I can install on my device to make the GSM calls functioning just as in the Samsung tab 2 10.1 GT-P5100.

Its hurting that even loading data packages becomes tedious.
I have to remove the sim card and insert it into some phone to do that since here in Uganda, Africa, we use codes to do that eg *100#
then reinsert it back into the tablet to use the data.

Voice Call Workaround
Sorry I'm late to this party. I recently purchased this tablet on eBay in pristine condition, and it is amazing. I started right away experimenting with voice calling. I purchased a SIM from Straight Talk with the usual unlimited plan (just like I would for a cell phone) and popped it in. The tablet had no problems recognizing the SIM and the phone number on it. Based on the hardware, at least from what I can see, the tablet seems to have the physical ability to handle calls so I suspect the inability to do so is software-related. However, I'm not a ROM expert (nowhere near - just a noob who knows enough to be dangerous), so I didn't feel like taking that risk. So, I found another solution - VOIP.
Since the tablet supports both WIFI and 3G/4G/LTE, a VOIP number that can be carried on those data streams would work. I tested this by creating a Google Voice number, and downloading the new Hangouts dialer app and got everything set up. Sure enough, I am now able to make and receive voice calls using this method. The SIM would ensure that I have data when no WIFI is available. Per the specs, this tablet should support HSDPA 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100, so T-Mobile's $30/mo 5gig plan seems like a good cheaper option as I don't need the talk minutes anyway.
I know that a native voice solution would be preferable, but, in the meantime, this is a decent workaround that solved my problem, and hopefully could prove useful to someone.

I got it mainly for the sim. slapped a ST sim in and away I go. See a phone app in ROM Manager See all the would leave me to believe I can make in and out calls on this thing. As of Jan 15 is this a forgotten relic and a crock of stewed crap to mess with to get working? If so Im heading for ebay or so,ewhere I want a 10.1 that I can use ST on and have 4G LTE. Can anyone reply to me where and what I need to make this happen. I just bought this for 100 bucks and I wont smash it into the wall but not real interested in it. With GO SMS it gives me a Straight Talk number and I can text with it but no dialer with a phone app running in the background? geez kick in the purse anyone?

I've just bought a XTZ LTE and have been wondering if installing Cyanogenmod would make it possible to call from it?
I love how it is now, but I would prefer if I could make/recieve phonecalls too.
It's either Cyanogenmod or Skype. Would prefer to keep my old number and not pay 2 phone bills.

Unless you guys are in Japan, which is the only country in the world so far where carriers have implemented voice calling over LTE, rather than GSM or CDMA - the rom you run on your XTZ isn't going to make any difference because to make regular phone calls over GSM or CDMA you need to have the actual hardware radio for that and this tablet doesn't have it.

But the SGP321 supports both GSM and WCDMA in addition to LTE, so that's not really helpful. There is however the question of whether the modem itself supports voice over GSM/WCDMA as the radio could be either the same or similar to the one in the Xperia Z phone.

WCDMA is just an alternative name for UMTS. It's a 3G data connection protocol. AFAIK no carrier in the world uses that for voice calls.I was not aware LTE version of XTZ had GSM radio, but I checked online and it turns out to be true. Therefore, it's possible to modify XTZ LTE firmware to unlock voice calling, but I doubt very much Cyanogenmod did it. It would have been big news and would have been all over tech blogs and it also would have been listed in CM nightlies changelog for XTZ LTE: http://10.1.cmxlog.com/?device=pollux

First I tried Skype. Payed for a number and everything but found out that Skype doesn't support recieving SMS.
So now I've ordered a 4G-subscription to my XTZ.
Using my old Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 3G with my current subscription I can send all calls and texts to my XTZ through the app: Tablet Talk.
That way I can make and recieve calls on my XTZ through my Galaxy Tab 2 without problem.
There might be around ~400 ms lag on calls if they aren't on the same network, but I can live with that.

Are you sure on this? I'm pretty sure there is no app or rom that will allow you to send/receive voice to another device for use with a GSM call.
I think tablet talk just allows you to control calls from a tablet device and send them to a bluetooth headset but won't actually let you use the tablet as if it were a blutetooth headset (bluetooth profiles are missing/not supported in android I believe)
Does that make any sense?

After hours of research I found you that you're right.
So I've forwarded calls to my Skype-number.
Much easier.
I can tell you that on my new SGP321 I am able to send/recieve SMS - I only realised because EE sent me a message to welcome me to the network.

Sorry to tag onto the end of an old thread, but the basic question of phone calls via the XTZ still seems to be hanging in the air. I've got a T-mobile voice/text/mobile internet sim in my SGP321, and I can send and receive texts via this subscription.
I just don't understand why phone calls can't be enabled: the tablet obviously has audio hardware (microphone and speakers), so support for audio is obviously built into the firmware; it accepts a SIM with a package including voice minutes; it apparently supports the same GSM spec as the Samsung Galaxy 10 (which has phone capability) (I'd give a link to the comparison, but apparently as a new user I'm not allowed to do so!)
So what's the problem? I guess it comes down to whether or not it's caused by an omission in hardware or software. If the former, we're stuck; if the latter - well, surely it should be possible - somehow?

UMTS is not just a data connection protocol; it's an entire 3G system. WCDMA is not "just another name for UMTS"; it's best thought of one of three different signal types UMTS can use. (WCDMA, aka UMTS-FDD, is used by almost all UMTS operators.)
Virtually every network operator on Earth with an active UMTS network uses it for voice, with a few exceptions (two or three Internet-only operators). They would be completely stupid not to - UMTS provides between 40 and 60 active voice calls per sector, vs. GSM's 7.
AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile, EE, Vodafone, Orange, O2, you name it; if it operates UMTS, you can bet voice calls are running over UMTS.
