It doesn't. Once you're done, just re-root.
You can't "format", in other words wipe, a device and keep root without a pre-rooted ROM image. The GS4 bootloader won't allow you to flash such an image, so there's none available.

Wow im an idiot. I didnt know they had a method or rooting the device again. last time i had to go from mi1 root there then update. Thank you.
Do you recommend just updating to MK2? When I open apps they just crash on me. Thats why I want to do this.

As far as I know, there's no MK2 stock ROM image out there yet.
I'd flash the MJ7 stock no-wipe that I pointed to, then root it. Once that's stable, you can update to MK2 if you want since you can flash back to MJ7 f rom MK2 if you need to.

ME7 needs help with Bonestock

Hi I'm new to all this rom flashing stuff and I was trying to flash bonestock 1.1 on my me7 gs4. I wiped everything as, I was rooted, and I put the zip file in my sd folder. After this I booted into recovery and it didnt give me an option to install from sd. I am formatted to exfat by the way. I tried using goomanager and ended up bricking my phone which I figured out how to fix, but would still like to use this rom. If anyone could give me a step by step walkthrough it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.
If you have ME7 already on your phone, you can't have a custom recovery which is needed to install custom ROMS. Sorry but your out of luck.

I believe he just means that his ROM is using the updates that ME7 provided, minus the part about locking down your phone for good. As was mentioned above, once you're on the official ME7, there's currently no way to install a custom recovery and thus no custom ROMs.

my link says the ROM is BASED off ME7..
Don't put words in my mouth, please.
If you successfully took the ME7 OTA or your phone already came with ME7 build, then you can only root and cannot flash custom roms as of yet. For rooting help check out android development section. Everything you need to know is there.

[Q] 4.3 Jellybean OTA

Does anyone else know if you can still root and install a recovery for custom ROMS after taking this update? I'm on ME7 now but over night my phone downloaded a update, but I haven't installed it yet.
Not until a new method is released. It will also break safestrap if that's something you care about.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it's not 4.3. Still 4.2. It will upgrade your phone to the MI1 firmware. There is a root process here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2487142 and Safestrap works, but at the moment there are no MI1 based roms. ME7 based roms will flash without a problem but wifi won't work.
That's nice.... It said it was 4.3 on the notice... That sucks.

I'm thinking I should just go ahead and let mine update. I all of a sudden get the notice to download and install the update even though I'm rooted (not sure how to remove that notice) and figure ME7's boot loader won't be unlocked

You can freeze the app SDM 1.0 in Titanium and that will stop the notificiations. Since it's still 4.2 there's no good reason to take this update, in fact it adds some Knox security to the bootloader so you might end up tripping it and screwing yourself if you need to send it to Samsung. Not worth it imo. Also Safestrap works I think but the roms have broken wifi with the update from what I've heard.
Okay thanks bro I'll dl.titanium backup

Ok so this is my first post, I dont know very much about rooting and such but I followed directions on how to root 4.2.2 and it was successful but now that this update is out im pretty much just bored with my phone being rooted and I want to update but
When I select install update now it turns off my phone and says "normal boot failed, odin mode, (other things)
Downloading do not turn off target" and doesnt do anything else
I knew how to get out of this so I did and now I dont know what to do

The best thing to do is odin back to stock and let the phone re download the update. BUT remember that once you update your stuck so if your bored now it will be worse once you update. And its not the 4.3 update even though it might say so.
That should be grounds for a lawsuit for false advertisement, lol.

[Q] Something's gone wrong

Hi there!! A while back I was rooted and enjoyed it very much. But recently, my friend's S4 had a bit of a booting up issue. So I decided to unroot. After unrooting, I thought of updating (because I didn't want to break my phone from root. I'm paranoid). When I went to update, I remembered that I had frozen SDM.apk with Root Uninstaller. So I had the idea of trying to re-root it, to no avail. Something went horribly wrong. Any ideas? Thanks in advanced! BTW, I am on MDK.
NOTE: I had a few mods, such as the AIO Odex Mod. All of my mods EXCEPT for the toggles were uninstalled. I am a noob to this Jelly Bean rooting, please point me in the right direction

You need to understand what having a mdk firmware build S4 means...you don't need to update...you have the ability to load a custom recovery and flash any rom you want...your phone has the loki exploit for bootloader.

Use saferoot, or the ME7 root method. And I really dont think you understand that you don't need to update your device. What we mean is that on MDK you can already run 4.4.2 if you flash say cm 11. If you take an update you're effectively locking your device down, ensuring that you wont be able to run the latest builds when they come out and you would be making a big mistake. So I'll tell you what Ill help you get root, if you don't update your device, or at least if you do don't post saying you did, it would be so depressing lol. It would be worse than upgrading to Vista from XP or to Windows 8 from Windows 7.

I do fully realize that if I update, I'm stuck forever. And I do like your analogy. But either way, I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to anything 2.3+ if I screw up my phone, I fear something far worse could happen.

What error did you get with motochopper? The easiest method to use would be saferoot if your comfortable with usbing adb or if you have a 32/64 gb sdcard laying around and know how to format to exfat use the ME7 root method
As always, go to settings--> security---> make sure 'Uknown sources' is checked and 'Verify apps' is unchecked. Then enable developer options if you have not already and make sure 'USB debugging' is enabled before attempting any of the above root methods. Also it might help to set Screen lock to None while you root, it can be enabled after. Post what errors you get if any so I can help.

You're mixing things up here.
One: Motochopper only works on MDK.
Two: Saferoot doesn't work on MDK, only MJ7/MK2 as far as I know.
Three: Saferoot doesn't require anything special as far as your SDcard size. The MI1 root does.
So, what bootloader are you on? Don't use motochopper if you're past MDK.

[Q] Samsung GS4 and Rom manager

Has anyone been able to get this to work?
I have a stock rooted GS4 from Verizon, the USB debugging is on. I have ROM Manager Premium v5.5.3.7 as well as Titanium backup which works fine. I used Towelroot to root it and it seems to have done its job correctly. I have both Clockworkmod touch and the standard Clockworkmod recovery to work with, both seem to do the same thing.
In ROM Manager I can brows ROMs and look for stuff but when I tap to backup the ROM I get the name dialog hit ok and it just goes reboots to the recovery.
Anyone gotten around this?

You cannot use clockworkmod or rom manager unless you are on mdk. You are going to soft brick your phone.

[Q] Questions on Rooting GS4

Hey guys, I've recently come across a VZW GS4 and I'm stuck on rooting. I know nothing about Samsung phones so this is pretty new to me. I tried towelroot and it was not sucessfull even after entering the different codes. The picture below is of the "About phone" section in settings. If you could just point me in the direction of a thread that would help me or let me know what do you, I'd really appreciate it.

How do I flash in ODIN? Just the same place as the NC5, under AP?
EDIT: Okay so not in ODIN. Like I said, I know nothing about Samsung devices. Seeing as how it is a .zip file I assume I need to flash it in a recovery on the phone. I jumped to conclusions with the wifi fix so I am now going to actually look up the proper way to apply it.

Is safestrap just the stock recovery or is it a custom like TWRP or CWM? And another thing, whenever flash an old firmware so I can root, it doesn't seem to actually change. I'm still at NK4 every time I change it. You know what I'm doing wrong? I've looked into a few different posts nothing is working. I've tried towelroot and Kingo.
And I suppose I should actually address your reply instead of just going on a tangent, I did and it put the phone in a bootloop and I have yet to address that. I just reflashed NK1 deal with it for the moment.

That is the thread I've been looking at most actually. But I just can't catch a break. Every time I try to download the files I want, my G3 fails instantly and my friends Wi-Fi just won't download at all. I think I now know an even better reason to why I've never bothered getting a Samsung haha.
