ok I have a HTC Hero locked to Orange (UK) and wondering what the must have apps and widgets are, what I can do to improve it etc. If you guys could share your vast knowledge that would be great.
Also please bear in mind I am fairly techy least people tell me but sometimes looking at others threads here I get lost quite easily.

Woah,... Where on earth to begin?......
1st question to ask yourself,... Are you happy to keep it Orange branded?.... Or do you want to install a custom ROM?.... Bear in mind, some ROMS have little tweaks added for better performance and stability, some are experimental, and have bugs that that need a little ironing out, but you could swap and change as many times as you want to test and find one best for you.
BUT BE WARNED,... Changing your ROM will in theory invalidate your warranty,... but you can always flash back to an Orange ROM should you need to send it for repair.
So its up to you?... This is the guide I followed to install a custom ROM,... Check it out,.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253
Second,... I'd update the radio to the latest one,... The radio is something to do with how well network, wifi, gps etc work,... I updated mine and saw a big difference in network reception.
,..... Now we can start talking about apps,... All I can do here is give my recommendations,....
Apps
TuneWiki - Can show lyrics for music on your phone or even whilst streaming LastFM.
Spareparts - Extra 'settings' options not available as standard. i.e... Transition animations, Font size, Haptic feedback. Also shows Battery & App statistics.
Shazam - No explanation needed.
Opera Mini - " ".
Movies (by Flixter) - Local movie show times + cinema and DVD reviews (?).
Co-Pilot Live - Satnav.
Astro - File manager.
ACV aka Droid Comic Viewer - Self explanatory.
Audio Manager - To set volume levels for Alarm, Media Player, Alerts, Ringer, System and Calls,.. All in one easy place,... Can then add as a widget to one of your homescreens.
Games
WaveBlazer - Was addicted to this on my 5800, couldn't resist getting it again.
Armagedon Squadron - As above
MotoXMania - I think this is from iPhone, get the moto x'er from one side of course to the other by tilting phone to control biker's weight distribution.
SpeedForge 3d - 3d racing game with mines and rockets set in future, quite difficult (for me) but still fun.
Tetris - Classic!!
Solitaire - Always fun.
PapaStack - Puzzle game, have to stack up all given blocks and make them stand for 10seconds before moving on to the next level.
ThrottleCopter - Based on old flash game "copter". Click button to control throttle on helicopter to get it though the course. The most addictive game so far.
Replica Island - Fun platform game.
EDIT,... Found another even more addictive game now,...
Sketch Online - Online Pictionary,... I cant stop playing it, Minimum an hour every day!
Hope some of that helps pal.
Peace.

Not a radio like FM radio,... I think radio refers to anything that sends or transmits,. i.e The WiFi, GPS, actual network connection. So updating the 'radio' will make those better, and sometimes may increase battery life as well.

[APP] Native Alarm turning on the device, testers needed

Hi,
Maybe a few people noticed that the alarm function on the China released/leaked rom implements an alarm that can turn on (completely turned off device) and ring the alarm.
It was first reported by hua_wuxin on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218356&highlight=H1+modem. (though he reported it that only works with the modem.bin file I later found out that the Chinese modem it''s not required )
I have removed the unnecessary files from the rom ( Boot.bin, modem.bin, param.lfs and sbl.bin) and I could safely flash on my device. And yes, it works.
What does it mean and why this is important?
1.It means the RTC is capable of bootstrapping the CPU thus starting the device, something that I only saw on non-smartphones so far.
2. It also allows us to see the dark side of China. Samsung opened the kernel so you can get your device turned on by an app ( and I bet there's more than the alarm). They never did it for the rest of the world. Just think about it.
I am trying to find out if I can port only the alarm part from that rom. If anybody could help...? I have a full busy week coming...
Also, maybe some could use a look at what's up with Chinese android story, there are some switches not seen before.
For those willing to experiment/test drive with the Chinese ROM, please remember:
- you don't have Market, Gmail, Live etc... you never get over the server configuring staff.
- prior to flashing, make a brand new Gmail account and a Facebook one- so you can get some contacts ( you only can sync contacts with Facebook and some Chinese email providers).
- keep in mind that the Chinese BIG BROTHER could be watching you remotely.
Anyway, having an alarm that could turn on the phone is a must have if possible.
The flashable ROM can be downloaded from here :
https://rapidshare.com/files/3259027098/I1900ZCKH1-4EU.tar
Update 1
I have managed to pull the ClockPackage.apk & .odex from the Chinese Rom.
The original apk is posted also. There are quite a few diff, including a new auto_power_up_setting.xml in res folder.
Pushing it straight over my rooted KH3 didn't work so I deodexed it and pushed it once more.
For some weird reason it worked perfect for 3 hrs. but now it gives an FC.
If anyone is interested could you please test it on other roms and provide some feed back?
Please make sure you rename the original clockpackage.apk and . odex to apk.old/odex.old so you can bring it back.
I have used classes from xeu framework since Chinese one hasn't got *maps.jar par example.
the second attachement is with the original chinese odexed apk.

Yes, it is really working...in that Rom...if it wasn't for the open door to chinese govt, I surely would be using the Rom all day long.
I like to turn off the phones during night, this way it doesn't go bullocks on the battery...so far I've only experienced from 12% to 30% battery loss overnight. But I should be thankful for the sublime deep sleep ( only implemented in this way on SGS2) that does it and prevents my battery from completely draining over 8 hrs of doing nothing.
Wow that is great news! I miss that feature A LOT. I used that feature on all my others phones since i go to work everyday and use my phone's alarm to wake me up in the morning.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Well, sorry to bump this up but this function seems pretty important to some...
Is there anyone who can tell me where the alarm function was integrated by samsung? I've extracted the ROM and the only thing I could find in app was analogclock.apk+ .odex but this is the widget. Is alarm built on touchwiz?

Nice, will test this out!
Good to see this back.
Also as of now there is no way to flash and not loose all settings.

Developer is now requiring that you go and register in his forum and accumulate at least 15 posts just so that you have access to the download link. I'm not sure this is the smartest way to make a forum happen, but what do I know! And Google is your friend.
If I flash this rom,wil I be able to use apps from nokia ,like Nokia music, for which I get 1 year unlimited song download.

I no longer have this ROM installed, but if you mean whether this is louder, the answer is no (in my opinion). It just gives you finer regulation of volume. In-call volume is still 1-10, but it can be changed with tweaks in Bazaar.
@Razor,
Care to share why you no longer have this ROM installed?
I've been using Rainbow 1.3 and now have just upgraded to v1.4 the other day - but was thinking of using Lumiatrix v4.3 (given that I've already decided to take the hit of an upgrade) as it seems like it has more tweaks built-in, but I'm interested in knowing why you decided otherwise.
thanks
p.s. still waiting for vivo to grant me access in his forum - I think I made the 10+ post already ...

Which more tweaks exactly? It's actually the other way around. And the reason I went with Rainbow is exactly that. The Lumiatrix developer (who happens to be the OP of this thread) went from sharing v4.1 and v4.2 of his ROM publicly (which is what awesome developers do on XDA) to requiring you to not just sign up on his forum to get v4.3, but also have at least 15 posts (I think it used to be 10) in order to see the download link (which you can easily find by just googling), only because he wants to make his forum "happen."
Wanna hear more? He PM'ed me on here, asked if I wanted to be a developer for Lumiatrix, that I needed no experience and that all I needed to do was sign up on his forum, PM a user (which turned out to be himself) and that I would get access to the forum with the tools and tutorials needed. I did my part and got a response from him saying he would teach me (what happened to tutorials and tools?) but that I needed enough posts. As soon as I questioned his motives behind this approach, he stopped responding.
In my very humble opinion, he's really going about it the wrong way, which is why I jumped ship and haven't looked back.
My 2c.
By the way, up until the developer went this way with v4.3, I was partial to this ROM, which this thread where I'm asking where the ROM thread went one time it got deleted from XDA will show you. It also explains the reasons this happened.

[Q] How to keep/force app alive in background ?

Hello there !
As a first time user of Android coming from an iPhone 4 with iOS 5.x I was amazed by the SGS III that I own.
So far, so good.
However I have a huge issue that is really starting to get on my nerve : why the hell I cannot keep my apps running in the background ?
I had friends trying to convince me to go to android, saying how it's rocking, how it's multitasking is awesome ... WHAT MULTITASKING ?
Many of you may know, but iOS finally brought multitasking with iOS 4, something people said that was really lacking to iOS when Android had it for a long time - let me laugh.
Well, let's be honest. Yes there is some sort of multitasking thanks to services that are not killed by the system, but I do not use them, I only need them to perform to do wahtever they are supposed to do.
And also between your recently launched apps as long as you keep switching between them in a very short amount of time.
And that is all.
So iOS 4 brought multitasking on a phone with only 256Mb of RAM (iPhone 4) and with only that much, I managed to keep running three games : Lords & Knights MMO, Wolrd War and iMob. They are not 3D games so they do not use too much RAM as would do a 3D game such as NOVA. And, the cool stuff is that the multitasking on iOS keep the apps as long as there is free RAM (I even managed to go as down as 17Mb, and then the system killed some (not all !) of my apps !)
That was really nice. Before iOS 4, I had to relaunch them each time a notification brought me back to them (they are internet dependant games). And with iOS 4 and then 5 and today 6, I can enjoy switching between them without lag, without relaunching as long there is free RAM.
With android, I CANNOT DO SUCH ACTIONS. Even if ICS is nice, fast on the SGS III, when it comes to multitasking I feel like I have been brought back to iOS3 on my iPhone 3 and 3Gs (thank God, SGS III is fast enough to relaunch the apps in not time, but stil...)
As I said, I launch my game, go back to home screen, lock the phone, unlock it minutes after and the games are gone. ALL OF THEM.
Here is what I found out in order to solve this situation :
- based on the kernel version and model, android will keep killing apps that are not services after a few minutes in the background ;
- my games that I want to keep running do not offer the possibility to keep them alive in the background ;
- I tried many apps (ram manager pro, auto memory etc...) none of them helpt me although they did offer features that would be the answer I as been looking for.
- I heard scripts would solve this situation, but I dot not know any of them.
So what is next ?
It is simple : I would like to have an app, or a tweak or script or anything else, but easy to use, that will help me keeping some of my apps alive in the background.
Thanks to anyone who could help me out with this.
PS: I have an international SGS III wit CM 9 running on it.
CM Version is : 9-20120909-NIGHTLY-i9300
Kernel version is : 3.0.15-CM-g026d5ce [email protected] #1

I am sorry. I did not really know that I was "bumping" my thread when it was on second page.
Who comes check on second page to answer, anyway ? I think most people do not ... unless people here are very generous ! ^^
If it is the rule, I will let go my thread further back in this forum in hope I will get an answer somehow to a matter that has been troubling me for months.
It can not be done as far as I know.
A few hacks/apps try to lower the oom value of apps, but it only last for a limited timeperiod.

Is this some sort of a joke ? Are you saying that even though I have plenty of free RAM I cannot use them to run apps in the background ?
This is ridiculous to say the least. Where is the multi-tasking ?
Anyway, thanks for replying.

[FIX][i9300][08/11/2013]Wake up lag on Samsung JB 4.3 MJ9 Firmware

Hello,
I´ve done some testing to figure out what causes the "wake up lag" on the latest Samsung JB 4.3 Firmware. This Firmware is unfinished as many of you may have noticed.
There are a few missing features or semi broken.
Ok, let´s start with some notices, on some devices you can notice a wake up lag when trying to wake your phone up. It may take several seconds for the screen to appear and to react.
There are a few possibilities to at least greatly reduce the wakeup time:
You´ll need to have a rooted Firmware installed and Trickster Mod ( any similar app will also work ).
These are the methods I´ve tried and figured out:
1) Some people suggest to change the used CPU governor from PegasusQ to ondemand.
While this actually helps to reduce the lag, it is a very bad idea. Ondemand is a generic governor in the linux kernel and does not support CPU Hotplugging. This will result in either a way to big battery drain since the cores will tend to run at full speed most the time, even in idle situations or severe lags.
2) Samsung introduced in the JB 4.2.1 , 4.2.2 and now 4.3 Firmware the usage of zRAM to his kernel.
While zRAM can actually help to improve multitasking, it also needs some extra cpu power which can also cause a higher battery drain. ( which would be very low and not noticeable at all if implemented the right way )
You can disable zRAM with Trickster Mod or any other, similar app. I´ve noticed that by doing this, the wakeup lag was greatly reduced and nearly gone. It takes about 1-2 seconds for the screen to turn on again.
To make sure you´ve disabled zRAM, use a terminal emulator and type "free".
3) Use an alternative kernel: Samsung has released the required kernel sources for JB 4.3 very fast this time.
Yank555, a well known and skilled developer has already built the first custom kernel for JB 4.3. By installing this kernel and using a different cpu governor than PegasusQ ( eg. zzmoove ), you will also notice a greatly reduced wakeup lag and also a better battery consumption.
Get this kernel directly from Yank555 here, you´ll have to create a forum account first:
http://yank555-lu.net/viewtopic.php?p=3#p3
Notice: If this kernel breaks your root, you´ll have to install this package again:
http://download.chainfire.eu/345/
Hopefully you´ll manage to reduce the wakeup lag by trying my methods
Feel free to leave your comments and tell me what worked out best for you.
Creating a separate forum and not releasing sources as gpl for one kernel is such a lame ass move.
Yes, i feel great improvement with Yank's kernel about wake up lag.
Thx for the info
Hi Victorator,
Please don't judge about this topic when you don't know the history and why yank made this decision. If you followed other kernel threads you had seen that yank is a role model when it is about helping and sharing.
Best regards,
Matt

Yank? He shares more than anybody here. Everyone uses his zzmoove setup. Plus, he used to have a thread here before AndreiLux kept on harassing him. That was the last straw for him.
It's his decision to not post here. It kinda sucks but we should respect it at least.
I also noticed if you are using WiFi - change advanced settings - set from DHCP to Static.
There was still a small screen on lag (about 1 second) but significantly less then with DHCP.

Accidentally press thanks button on the post above. Annoying xda app.
Big plus 1 for your comments. Wonder if OP got permission from yank to post his kernel here. Whatever the reasons and whatever arguments involved, we should respect his decision which clearly stated in his forum. Furthermore, this thread doesn't belong here imho, no development thus should be in general.

JP doesn´t mind if I post a link to his forum, for the guys who want to use his kernel. However, he doesn´t accept hot links directly to his webspace or alternative links to other webspace..
I respect his work and have mentioned his kernel in a way which is acceptable to all of us. Just in case JP doesn´t want his work to be mentioned, I´m going to remove the link to his forum.
Are there anyway to fix app opening lag. Specially dialler, gallery.

Im running his 4.3 release on Omega v51 (4.3) currently in beta stage and its great. Was a big fan of his work while he was here on XDA and followed him to his site to continue using his work too on my S3 through-out 4.1.2.Shame he had to leave like that but at least he still Devs.
Could someone test something ???
I disable the LockScreen and know when i push the power button my screen opens immediately.
I use this LockScreen https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lockscreen.galaxy
The result is when i push the power button my screen opens immediately
So maybe the problem with lag is the LockScreen ???

Hmm. Your argument seems legit. But what could possible go wrong with the lock screen?

There doesn't seem to be lags with dialer or gallery. I use the S4 gallery as a replacement to the default 4.3 gallery app that came with the update..
both of them seem to work perfectly fine..

And that's what is perfectly managed with Sir yank's kernel.
Use of zram for multitasking, etc might be the solutions. But that kernel solves the problems..

An entry on the blacklist may have several reasons:
1. You are a well-known spammer.
2. Last time a well-known spammer was using the dynamic IP address which you got from your ISP (Internet Service Provider), your e-mail address or the username you have choosen.
3. Your ISP is well-known for a lot of spamming customers and is not fighting against spammers enough.

It is a shame we have to go to a separate site and register to get this kernel. Hope the Dev decides to come back to XDA.

Use opera mini or another browser that gives you an ip number instead of your own, I had the same issue.
AFAIK, OnDemand does Hotplug, it does on the S4.
Hi. Which goverors are available if I use Trickster Mod (or similar) with the stock 4.3 kernel? As you write that ondemand is not good, is there any govenor available which solves the wakeup delay and is recommended?
I´m just searching for a slim solution to eliminate that wakeup delay, I don´t want to flash a custom kernel.
Thanks fpr help
