Rain-X - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hi,
Just putting this out there in case anyone is interested:
I removed the ASF from my XZU recently, as I found it annoying. The feel isn't as nice as glass, and ironically it's easily scratched.
However, the downside I found to removing the ASF is that the phone has no oleophobic coating underneath, making it a nightmare to keep looking even half-way clean.
There is a company called "Fusso" that makes a replacement oleophobic coating, but it's pretty costly. So when looking around for cheaper alternatives I found quite a few people have recommended Rain-x for this purpose. So I tried it out, and have been using it for a week and a half now. It certainly makes a BIG difference. My XZU is now just as smudge-resistant as my N10.
I'm not yet quite certain how long the coating lasts once applied. I first applied it over a week ago, and then re-applied a few days later. It's been a week since I last applied and the coating its definitely still effective. So in summary, I would definitely recommend this solution! The rain-x cost me just under £5, where the fusso coating is £20. The bottle will last for years.

That is interesting and I have some for my car...time to test this lol

I got the cover today, went on the first time without airbubbles, but unfortunately I got a a hair stuck under the cover. I got it on right the second time, and I'm really loving tthe cover. Its great for reducing the finger prints and glare. It is very smooth and doesn't have the orange peel texture of a lot of other screen protectors, I wouldn't mind getting one for my Droid Charge.
I got mine last night. Brought it to work this morning and slapped it on.
All I can say is I hate air bubbles and this went on the first time without issue.
It is smooth, cut down on the glare, fingerprints less noticeable, and it looks fantastic...
I am absolutely impressed by this. I may have to find out how to get a spare.
Nice can't wait to receive mine and write up a review. Hopefully my stylus will be in at the same time so I can let you know how it works with the stylus.
Recieved mine this morning. The install went smoothly, very few air bubbles that were easy to work out. The tip for removing dirt/hair trapped under the cover was great. Cover does really reduce glare and fingerprints nicely. I like the texture of the cover, it is not as smooth as the TF glass, just right to let fingers glide without grabbing.
All in all I would buy this cover.
Thanks
Just received mine today, install was easy and air bubble was easier to get out compare to what i have used before. Pretty good cover i'd say.
Just got mine as well today, install went reasonably smooth. There are a couple imperfections, but those were my fault and not the products fault. It definitely reduces the glare, and I don't notice fingerprints at all. The camera hole lines up perfect and doesn't affect it at all. Definitely one of the better screen protectors out there. The tip for getting rid of dust worked great.
I will try and get a better picture later; camera didn't want to auto focus properly.
Thanks all for the reviews. I will be posting a BUY thread in the Marketplace section once I get a few more reviews. These will be retail units with complete packaging. So keep those reviews coming!
PS Anyone recommend a cheaper/faster shipping alternative? I'm shipping them via USPS First Class ~$1 to $2 depending on location.
PPS Looking forward to the video reviews
Just got mine. Went on as easy as any screen protector I have tried. No problem with bubbles, reduces prints and glare, also the fit is spot on, only negative comments would have to be that it's not as smooth as glass. I would recommend this product.
Got mine today. Slapped it on, luckily no hair\dust. Minor bubbles which im slowly seeing go away. Glare is minimal as well as the fingerprints. By far much better than the one i received with my case from amazon. Putting an affordable price on it should make you and lots of users happy. Id buy another if need be. Thanks
Thanks to cheinb once again for the free sceen protector your generousity is greatly appreciated.
Received my Screen protector this morning in the mail and was dissapointed to see that customs or the mailman (not sure who was to blame) had decided to fold the package in half.
Despite the crease i still managed to get it to flatten out enough to be useable so I proceeded to line up the edges and found it to be a perfect fit, nice!
The finish on the screen protector adds a matte effect to the display helping to reduce glare in a sunny/brightly lighted environment, welcomed as another added bonus no doubt. The smooth surfaced finish also seems to attract significantly less fingerprints and makes the scrolling and swiping flow better.
In summary i am more than pleased with the build quality and perfect fit of cheinb's asus transformer custom screen protector, now to see how it will stand the test of time and close encounters with my monsters i mean children.
thanks again cheinb good looking out!
I received mine at the beginning of the week, and had absolutely zero problems installing it. I've installed many screen protectors in the past, and this had to be the easiest one I've ever done. The instructions were simple, and I had barely any bubbles that were slowly dissipating.
The feel of the screen protector is great, just the right amount of slide and it really cuts down on the glare.
All in all, one of the better screen protectors I've used, in all categories (Installation, protection, glare reduction, surface feel).
The TF is uses corning gorilla glass, really no need for screen protectors, unless you plan on throwing your devices around. Check youtube for gorilla glass reviews.

hey Fliparsenal,
You were one of the first batch. Let me know if you still haven't received it in a few days.

Good!
I got mine yesterday and also applied it yesterda.
The protector is quite thick and sturdy. There was a small paper with sintructions as well.By design it allows for less air bubbles and I have only a few minor ones on the sides because of my in experience.
It has reduced the glare and made the screen less slippery. Fairly thick and I am sure it will last for a long time. The adhesive is also pretty strong. Would have been even greater with a slight blackish tint.
In short I recommend it.

Same here nothing yet.
Excellent
Received mine the other day, and have had a few days to use the protector.
The following is my opinion. Screen protectors aren't for everyone, but personally I'd rather make a $20 'oops' than have to live with scratches. I don't see the harm in a protector, and in my experience they reduce fingerprints and glare like mad... so, do what you want.
Anyway, here's what I think of this protector:
Installation:
Handy set of instructions. Protector went on without any problems. I used a credit card as suggested to get rid of the air bubbles, which worked out very very well. This installation method is much much easier (and safer?) than Zagg, and similar to other adhesive-type protectors.
Fit:
The protector is cut slightly smaller than the size of the glass. My alignment was spot on, so I don't have any air bubbles around the edges, but there is probably a 1mm (or less) gap around the outside of the protector, which in my opinion is the perfect fit. The cutout for the front camera also is perfect.
Feel:
The protector offers minor friction for fingers. Initially my hands were very clean from the application process, and therefore were not leaving any finger prints. I have since used the TF for a few days, and even let a baby with greasy hands play with it, and the fingerprints/smudges were a minimum. In summary: the protector feels VERY GOOD and appears to cut down fingerprints like crazy. For me, this protector is better than just the glass, and much much better than the protector I had before (I had some 3 for $10 ebay style protector.. it was garbage). This protector is on par with Zagg protectors and their lack of fingerprints (for those who have used them).
Look:
Its hard to tell that there's even a protector on except for a few pieces of dust. Glare is reduced, colors don't seem to be affected. The protector I had before this one was much worse for letting the true colors through. Everything was faded and coarsened (dunno how to best describe that, but it looked bad). All in all, this one looks as good as no protector, with added benefit of reduced glare and minimal fingerprints.
Overall:
Most of my protector experience is with Zagg protectors; on a Nook Color, galaxy s and iPhone. I didn't want to have to fight with putting a Zagg on for a screen the size of the TF, so I have been looking for alternatives. If this protector is competitively priced then imo its one of the better ones for the TF. I once tried a skinomi for a G-tablet, and that thing was a complete waste of money.
Pending price, would get another one of these.
Thanks OP for the protector.
Keep us updated on their availability (I'll probably get another one).
Another question: would it be difficult to make one to fit a G-Tablet?
Cheers.
Ok I've finally received mine. Unfortunately the the package must have gotten folded during transit and it now has creases. I'll make do and will post a tutorial next upcoming weekend. Hopefully the crease is not permanent.

Anyone used Invisible Shield Before?

I'm looking at screen protectors right now. I decided to get the Otter Commuter case. Reviews say the included screen protector is terrible. So I'm getting a second one. I've look at a few. Moshin, Skinomi and invisibleSHIELD so far. I'm only getting a screen protector, not a whole-body cover.
I've heard some good reviews about invisibleSHIELD, but many say it gets dirty fairly quick. (Around the edges). Anyone have any first-hand experience? Any other recommendations?
Yes, I used it, and I hate it. With InvisibleShield, the screen doesn't feel as smooth as other screen protectors that I've used (PowerSupport USA, Belkin, Griffin, etc.) It seems to have a sticky feel to it when you're using the screen with IS.
I got a moshin for free from the atnt rep. Prob the easiest and cleanest protector I ever put on. It's antiglare, but has a nice finish.
Ill order two. I'll need to replace one eventually. Thanks.

the Moshi, at least the one I got at ATT, says you can peel it off, wash it and then reattach it to the phone. It even recommends cleaning it by taking it off the phone. I can't wait to see how that really goes...
Between my wife and myself, we've had InvisibleShields on iPhone, Cappy and HTC Aria. Both of us are happy with them. I will agree with a previous poster that they can get a slightly "sticky" feel to them, but I find they are much better, in terms of long term wear and consistency, than either the static or dry adhesive types. They clean up very nicely with LCD screen cleaner and a lint-free cloth.
As of early last week, Zagg didn't have IS available specifically for the ATT version of the SGS2, so I took the advice of a poster on another thread and bought a pair of Int'l SGS2 protectors from ArmorSuit for about 10% the price of the Zagg product (the paraphrased advice was "for wet-applied screen protectors, they are all the same, buy the cheapest one"). To this point they appear extremely similar to the IS, so I may stick with them.
Hope that helps...
I used invisible shield and body gaurdz, out of those 2 I like the body gaurdz the most.

All those "military grade" screen protector feels the same... lol
I've used it on my old iPhones. They are pretty useless, you lose the screen quality and the touch and feel of it.
They don't protect the screen at all, their warranties only cover the plastic not the screen so it's pointless. Only use for the covers is on the back of a phone since they get a lot of surface damage.
I would just get any type of cover and not waste 20+ on name brand military grade protectors.
i used a few different ones on the captivate. but i loved the Invishield one the most. i liked the more rubber texture and it is insanely tough. The same one has been on the phone for 2 years so far and it still looks great.
I hate them. They are crappy and they seem to lower the quality of the image of the screen. I can't stand the feel of them. The best one I've used so far were Realooks. I used that on my Captivate and my wifes HTC. After putting it on, the image quality stays the same and it doesn't look or feel like there is a protector on there. I don't plan on using one for this phone.
Just to add a little bit - no matter what you put over your screen, you are going to impact your image quality some - whether or not it is noticeable to you is a matter of several factors:
a) quality of the screen protector
b) how well it was installed
c) how much damage/scratching/smudging is on the protector
d) how attuned the user is to image quality
Personally, I find wet mount protectors much easier to install in a high quality manner and get less bubbles/loss of clarity compared to dry mount protectors.
This military shield thing I got cheap installed very nicely, and after a day of it being on and the microbubbles working out, I personally notice minimal impact on image quality.
I work at asphalt plants (a very dusty and dirty environment with numerous hazards to phones) so I am uncomfortable with not protecting my screens. I would rather have something damage a $20 (or $2 in my current case) plastic screen protector that is easily replaceable than damage the glass of my $550 device. In fact, I once had the Aria in my pocket when an asphalt sample container I was carrying broke open, spilling 330 degree hot mix asphalt all over my side and into the pocket with the phone. After digging the asphalt out of my pocket along with the phone (yeah, it was toasty and I was in a hurry ) I picked all the rocks and sand off the phone (which was also in a silicone sleeve type case) and cleaned it up with a little of the solvent we use. No permanent damage. I'll stick to screen protectors....
I decided to order the skinomi protectors. I'll see how they are. It is a wet application, so I hope everything goes well.

That is incorrect. Go get a zagg invisibleshield, and then put it on. they go on easy, and in return they degrade easier.
If you live near a mall with a Ghost Armor installation location, GO THERE. Their(as well as zaggs) prices are are steeper than your average 3pack for $12, but they install it for you.
I used invisibleshield/body guardz for 2 years before these guys put them out of business in my local mall. Their material is the same, EXCEPT it is thinner and MUCH MUCH MUCH more natural feeling. It does not feel grippy, and it is still extremely protective. The only thing is that your screen will look like crap for about a day. after that day, it should clear up and you'll hardly even notice the orange peel effect that zagg's have so much of.
I will recommend these guys for my screen protection any day.
I just ordered an invisible shield for my gs2. Should be arriving with my case mate pop case....everyone has their own opinions but I've always been happy with zagg products

ive used ishield before on my nokia. it did have that rubbery feel or sort ! thought it was easy to install. on the other hand ive tried skinomi? same wet application but it feels smoother. i currently use it on my touchpad
In my experience very overpriced, and it gives the orange peel effect.
I guess they do actually work if you dont mind compromising screen clarity/image quality.

I have used iShield before on my iPhone; but prefer the hard screen shields as they are less "sticky" for swiping with the fingers like the one that came with the TPU case for my SGS2. I find that the soft ones with the solution spray is more sticky for some reason maybe for grip as some do wrap the whole phone with iShield.

Preferred screen protector?

Considering ordering this for xmas.
Just wondering if people went with standard B&N screen protector, or if they used something else?
I heard about this: http://www.epinions.com/content_1950392452 on reddit. I think I'll be giving it a try first. If it's not good, I'll go with another ready made type. The price is low enough that I don't mind experimenting.
I may bypass that.. Use to work at radioshack and hated having to cut out screen protectors.. even with the pre-made gride it was annoying..
For the NC, I got a $2.5 eBay job, since it's pre-cut, anti-glare, anti-smudge. Works fine.
The more important question would be HOW TO best apply a screen protector. It's a PITA, especially for butterfingers. I watched a bunch of Youtube how-tos.
There are some tricks, the main one is to work in a non-dusty, lint-free environment, and to scrupulously clean the screen surface. May be the expensive stuff have better cleaning kits. Dunno.
Personally i have elected to go without a screen protector. After using an iPod touch with a screen protector for years i have found it to be a much nicer user experience using glass screen devices without a plastic covering. And since i wont be putting the nook in my pocket im not too worried about scratches from keys and dirt. I do however use the leather nook cover when im taking it places.
Sent from my BNTV250 using Tapatalk
I have also elected, for now, to go without a screen protector. I have a leather cover for it, and I use a stylus I purchased from Walmart (Targus, was cheaper there than anywhere else) almost all of the time. So far so good.
I don't think the NT is glass, feels like some kind of acrylic.
I bought a couple of cheap Matte screen protectors from Ebay. The brand turned out to be Insten 22191 PBNXNOOKSP02 Made in China. I could not get it on without bubbles, so I don't recommend them. I bought 2 for $2, so I may try again. I saw one applied at the B&N store and it was perfect, so perhaps the ones they sell at the store are better.
I had a gift certificate so I bought the matte one from B&N. I normally use InvisiShield protectors on my other gear, but they have a slight orange peel finish that I didn't think would serve the great NT display too well. The B&N screen works fine, but frankly I think it slightly diminished the impact of the high quality display. While it lowers the noticability of smudges, it also reduces the contrast and the sharpness and vibrancy slightly. I'm debating going with no protector, or finding a crystal clear protector that literally looks like nothing is there. I know that will do nothing for the glare and smudges, but it won't be any worse in that regard than not using one at all.
I took a chance on a kit from amazon for $9 which included 2 antiglare sheets and a stylus. The screen covers went on fast and work great while the stylus is decent.
I would post a link but I don't have enough posts, search "glareshatterer" on Amazon.
I went with "stealth shields" in ebay. They are like 7 bux for 2. It goes on with water and soap with a squeegie.
Mine went on flawlessly, no bubbles or anything. Crystal clear.
I find the water and soap shields the easiest to install. I always screw up the self adhesive ones and i alost always get at least 1 bubble.

MiniSuit - Anti-Glare Protector

I ordered two of these, along with an ArmorSuit body kit (not anti-glare), and figured I'd try them out.
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Transformer-Prime-Anti-Glare-Protector-ASUS-Tranformer/dp/B006QCQWP8
This anti-glare one is great.. $5.95 too. Dry install, took about 5 minutes to get the thing on and the bubbles out.
Very smooth to the touch, almost a "dry" feeling, if that makes any sense. Tiniest bit of blur, and if you have a white/light background you'll notice a bit of pixelated effect due to the anti-glare coating. Well worth it to me, as the TFP is just way too reflective au natural.
Cutouts line up perfectly, and brightness / color saturation isn't impacted to a significant degree (IMO).
If you're looking for an anti-glare protector, I think it's a great deal. Shipping was over a week.. not sure if they're using carrier pigeons or what, so you may want to order two to avoid the wait if you think you might screw up the install.
I'll snap a couple photos tonight.
As of yet, I haven't bothered with the ArmorSuit product, I like this matt / anti-glare finish so much I'm afraid of what I'll get when I go back to a "normal" protector.
Still haven't taken the photos, damn I'm lazy.
Anyway, here's a video of it I made for something else, with the anti-glare screen on. This was in my kitchen, in the afternoon, with a big window directly to my left.
It makes a world of difference.. (notice you can barely see the reflection of my hand). I can watch videos pretty much anywhere now without the glare.
Looks good! I'm in for 2~
Nice!
I purchased one a few weeks ago, but have been too busy to apply it... will prob do it this weekend, first cleaning the TF Prime screen and doing it in the bathroom after running the hot water for awhile.... used this process for my GNex and it worked beautifully for a dry apply screen protector!
Thanks for the info!
Did either of you guys install the protector yet? I'm still liking mine.. I've used it countless times in the dock, and I get a slight "ghosting" where the dock was on the protector, but it goes away within a few minutes. No permanent marks yet, so I'm really happy with that as well.

Accessories to offset paranoia - New Xperia ZU owner

Hiya folks,
So I just bought a new ZU, and turned around immediately to buy accessories that would protect the child from harm. These include:
1. A FlyGrip gravity so I can hold it securely while commuting or engaging in any activity that may cause sudden changes in inertial forces
2. A metal wrist strap in case the FlyGrip fails (from ebay, HAMA 18 cm)
3. A shockproof ABS rubber case (actually found it through this forum)
4. A tempered glass front screen protector with Ol coating etc. (Amazon, Tinxi)
I *may* be going too far, but my question is, has anyone had any issues with putting the tempered glass protector on top of the stock ASF? I don't care about colors/rainbow effects etc. or the looks, but interference with functionality, i.e. touch sensitivity and pen/stylus/pencil writing would be a no-no.
The child will be delivered tomorrow, along with all of the above, so dust/fingerprints etc. will not be a problem - wish to preserve pristine state.
Thoughts?

I actually put a tempered glass protector (also Tinxi) on the ASF over the weekend and am very happy. My ZU was a month old and I never had time to install it earlier.....I regretted that when my ASF oleophobic coating wore off and the screen started looking awful (how is it supposed to last a year or more?).
Initially I was going to remove the ASF but didn't feel brave enough after reading how long it took. So instead I gave the ASF a good clean and installed the Tinxi, which was surprisingly easy. Looks perfect - the smears and marks from the ASF are invisible (there were no scratches fortunately).
It's a relief to have a glass screen again like my Nexus, I hardly used a pencil before as I was scared the ASF would scratch.....with glass I am happy to use a sharp pencil which seems to work fine (nothing like a Note stylus though). I'm not a regular user of this feature though, so somebody else may have a more informed opinion. (I've only tried an HB pencil).
Touch sensitivity seems the same (there may be fewer ghost touches actually), and no problems with color/rainbows. May be more reflective though.
Hope that helps.
Thank you for that comprehensive reply
Based on your data, I'm going to wait for the glass to arrive before unboxing the ZU.

Glad to help, however as I said I have no experience of removing the ASF....you may get better results if you remove it (although I am happy I didn't have to).
Also, I notice you plan on using a metal wrist strap - wouldn't that be a scratch risk when keeping the ZU in a pocket? I haven't used a strap yet, but may try using my (non-metal) camera strap for a few days to see whether I find it useful or if it bothers me.

I've got a staged approach to this - the metal strap will reach me tomorrow, along with the tempered glass. That means at the very least, the screen is protected and the slip-from-hands-and-shatter risk is mitigated from the get-go. The case and FlyGrip will arrive early next week, so hopefully nothing is too scratched by then. I'll be removing the wrist strap once the FlyGrip is there.
All this to say that (unfortunately), most of my pants don't have pockets and the ones that do are *not* large enough for the ZU, so I never even considered scratch-in-pocket risk before now. I have a bag with a padded pocket for tablets and such...
EDIT: I chose the metal strap because it's braided wire--I wasn't too thrilled with the idea of trusting a leather or nylon cord with the ZU. Again, never even considered the scratch risk *frown*. Let's see what happens when I put the ensemble together.
I just put a tempered glass screen protector on my phone after only having it for a week. Wasnt going to risk it after reading that the ASF was so easy to scratch. Not a perfect fit...but when its in the case im the only one that notices. No issues with it being on top of the ASF, no rainbow, no touch issues, etc. Havent tried a pencil but ballpoint pen works still (all I had handy to test. But, and metalic pointed item works. Tried a coil head from an ecig atty and it worked great as well).
