I’m kinda torn, I don't think there’s enough people on ME7 that are actually working towards a bootloader exploit any more...I’m thinking of taking the update to see if more of us working together on MJ7 might yield better results. I know the pros/cons of taking an update so I'm not about to post this in Q&A and have a long worthless thread, I'm also not asking for peoples opinions on what I should do I just want to get a feel for the number of people on each build. If there’s still enough of us on ME7 ill stay there and keep trying to see what I come up with, I just don't want to work on something that’s only useful for 8 people.
ME7 not as locked down as MJ7 from bootloader and security aspect. Safe strap most likely only option from this point on....just saying.

I know ME7 is not as locked down, its because its SELinux is permissive and not enforcing like it is on later builds (MJ7 & MK2) and also its not as Knox'ed down (<-- Claiming that) as MJ7 and MK2 either. I know Safestrap is the only option right now, but I don't even use Safestrap (nothing against Hash - its a great achievement) but this has nothing to do with Safestrap.

As I said in the other thread I am on me7 and in no hurry to update... but if jeboo can load kernel modules on mk2 then I may not wait AS long to take a 4.3 update. Still for now staying put.
I ended up taking the update. I figure as time goes on, eventually everybody will be on it. Just figure all the people who will do a warranty replacement, and all the new people who are grabbing a free one from best buy this week.

I am reluctantly coming to the conclusion to move on up to MK2.
I'm on MI1, but now there is a safe root for MJ7 and MK2 *AND* tethering works, there is a patch for Wallet and Wanam works.
No reason to stay on MI1 anymore. I was the only one that answered MI1 in the poll. I didn't/don't use Safestrap.
Moving to MK2 over the holidays.....:crying:
Mj7 here and I think a lot of people on me7 will upgrade to the latest since safestrap is working on Mj7 now.

I don't really know, there's been a few updates and there has to be some improvements worth having by now. I do have custom recovery, I wasn't sure if trying anything would make me lose that capability though. Once I rooted and installed it I got out of the whole modding scene so I have no clue what's going on at the moment.

Taking Verizon update to newer firmware will remove your ability to flash aosp ROMs cyanogen mod and all the other greats...safestrap for newest firmware has extremely limited support at this point allowing you to only flash touchwiz ROMs based on mj7(only 1 or 2 as of now).but if you stay on mdk you can flash aosp as well as update to mj7 without locking yourself out permanently (or at least until another workaround is found)...they have worked tirelessly to gain access for custom recovery... Seems close...but may never happen...if you upgrade and no new exploit is found you will be stuck with touchwiz only for as long as you have your device

I'm currently rooted on VRUAMDK with (what I believe to be anyway) the first method from when the phone was released. I didn't have much time to bother with it when ME7 came out so I just froze SDM in TiBu and ignored it until now.
Today I saw the info about the MI1 update and decided to give it a shot updating. I saw that it was already rooted so I figured I'd just go for it and do an OTA after unfreezing SDM. However, when I tried that the install restarted the phone into Team Win Recovery and didn't complete. I assume this was because TWR blocks the install to avoid you losing root or something like that.
What I'm wondering is if there's a way to update to MI1 through TWR or some other alternative to the Verizon OTA so I don't lose root at all? I would like to know if there's a similar method for rooted phones with ME7 (since my girlfriends phone is rooted on that.).
Thanks in advance.
Don't take the OTA. Just get an MI1 stock deodex ROM. For the love of God keep your bootloader intact. The newer ones are not exploitable.

Okay, I thought that might be the right course of action but wasn't sure that the ROMs were equivalent of an OTA or just a custom rebuild of the old version.
As for my Girlfriend whose phone came with ME7? Should she just take the OTA and then Root again?
The MI1 OTA, from what I've gathered, enables a custom software counter. So unless she's planning on staying fully stock I would avoid the update. MI1 didn't really change enough to justify anyone to update as far as I know.
By custom software counter, I mean that if you were to tinker with your phone too much, it would blow a permanent qfuse that would let Samsung know not to grant your warranty when the time comes.

Neither update offers anything of real value that the custom rom's aren't bringing to the table. Hell there are flashable radios even. Apps to SD for me7 might be the only useful feature. But there are custom me7 roms. Wait on the devs to update you.

Hey folks...... :highfive: I'm currently working on my Ex Wifes phone SCH-I545. I've not updated or done anything to her phone since I rooted and installed Beanstown. Quite some time ago. Any way, Her Android version is 4.2.2/VRUAMDK. :good: TWRP for recovery, not sure the version. My question is, Can I just flash any of the latest ROMs to her phone? I just want to make sure I don't screw her phone up. @Crawshayi, I see your answer right there. I just want to double check and know that I won't lock her phone down.
I really appreciate you guys. Without you and XDA, I'd be completely lost.

Edit: Thanks guys. Everything worked perfect. My phones are running flawless.

Hi All!
I rooted my Galaxy S4 on Verizon earlier today (well, attempted to) with VRoot. It worked, but everything was really sluggish so I attempted to flash back to the stock Samsung ROM. I discovered that since I was running 4.3 with the MK2 OTA, I can't flash a previous version. I can't find a copy of the MK2 ROM anywhere. Does anyone here have any suggestions or maybe a link to the MK2 ROM for the i545 on Verizon?
Thanks!

There are several ways to root the mk2 version but both vroot and kingo have been deemed unsafe by the xda mods, in the development thread there is however a root method for mj7 that does in fact work with mk2. also im gonna warn you before hand that there is no custom recovery available for the mk2 or mj7 versions of the gs4.

If your talking About flashing custom ROMS/recovery's, then no, and if you attempt to do either it most likely will result in a brick. However a Dev by the name of Hashcode, is currently working on making safestrap compatible with MJ7 & MK2. I hope that helps clear up some things.

You ONLY can go backwards from MK2 to MJ7. You seem to be interpreting this as being able to go back from MK2 to anything, and that's not the case.
Both of those releases only allow custom ROMs using Safestrap, and both support the same ROMs. There's no point in downgrading to MJ7.
My galaxy s4 was stuck in factory mode and it seemed like there was nothing i could do. I though i had nothing to lose so i decided to update from MDK to ME7 threw odin and it fixed the problem so if your like me and have nothing to lose try updating .
Sorry but that is BAD advice. It's never good to update from MDK to anything else. You should have just Odin back to stock MDK firmware and reroot and flashed recovery. Bad/dumb move imo.

Updating may soon not be such a big deal...got a group of great devs who may have had a huge breakthrough in the form of kexec kernel modules that may soon allow newer bootloaders to run custom ROMs based on aosp and not be limited to touchwiz...kexec lead to a fully unlocked boot loader on vzw gs3 and could bring this"for the love of god don't update" crap to an end!

Maybe but you're still using safestrap to hijack the boot sequence so your adding a rom on top of your stock rom giving you less room on your s4. I understand safestrap very well as I came from a DROID Bionic using SS then SS with kexec. I would still never give up MDK. If I had to ever replace my s4 with another s4 i'd be thankful for SS emencely but I'd never willingly give up MDK. And that's all I'm saying, I would never recommend giving MDK.

I asked a similar question back in October, but fell out of the loop again and didn't want to necro an old post. I just want to verify that the information I got back then is still relavent.
Is installing custom ROMs still the best way to bring my MDK S4 up to the current version? If so, what should I be looking for in a ROM title to tell me that it's just a stock ROM that gives the same experience as the OTA? Someone mentioned Deodex'd in my last post, but I have no idea what that means or if it's what I should be looking for.
And for an S4 that came stock with ME7? Should my girlfriend (with an ME7 update) just take the newest OTA and root that, or is there a benefit to sticking with ME7 and installing a ROM? If the answer is to go with a ROM then she'll want the stock new OTA experience as well for now, are there any ME7 ROMs available that can do that?
Thanks again guys!
Don't touch your MDK S4. Leave it on MDK with Loki. It's practically an unlocked bootloader with actual TWRP and CWM. You can still install 4.3 TouchWiz stock ROMs on it because you can change the kernel. Plus you can run AOSP ROMs, which is awesome.

You're girls me7 s4 might as well update to mj7 or mk2 (4.3) as then she'll still be using Safestrap. Mostly everyone is running Hyperdrive anyways. Great performance and battery life with that. Update it, throw Safestrap 3.71 on there then Hyperdrive 12....pretty much bug free.
As far as you're MDK phone just grab whatever AOSP 4.3 or 4.4 ROM you like. You're lucky to have that phone!!

Guys...
SOrry if this is a poor post, but I'm still new to the gs4 on verizon.
When I got the phone about a week ago, It immediately took an OTA upgrade. I'm geussing this was a mistake?
Only reason I say this, is because i'm now on NC5, and it seems that I'm limited as to what I can do as far as ROMS.
However, I'm seeing that there are people on "MDK" which I'm assuming is an older base...are able to put whatever AOSP rom posted in the forum....
DO all phones comes with MDK base?
I can call them and ask to send a replacement....what are the chances its MDK?
A little help would be appreciated....Thanks!
Doubtful vzn has any phones left with mdk (I'm assuming, it was the original base when this phone came out last summer). If it makes you feel any better you were probably on mk2 4.3 when you took the upgrade, so you didn't really lose anything.

MDK bootloader was on the original GS4 and an exploit called loki was found that could bypass the bootloader lock so that you could root & install a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM & thereby flash both TouchWiz and AOSP roms. Thanks to Vzw /Att /Samsung, ota updates were issued that kills this exploit. All new phones are locked down. Can still root & use Safestrap recovery to flash TW based roms into a "sandbox" parallel system. Can't flash new kernels though.
Got it! Thanks
