I've rooted my HTC DNA months ago before switching to the note for battery life.
Never used Odin or anything before. HTC you have to s off to root and then use cwm to install roms.
I want the note 3 features and 4.3. My main goal is to remove the bloat but keep the note features. And I really want added battery life. It's nice now but I'm getting a Sony sw2 and I'll have Bluetooth on all day now. So need the battery to last without me switching to a backup battery every day.
What do people recommend me starting with on my first Samsung Rom?

I'm a big fan of CyanogenMod, but there are some volume issues on both bluetooth and wired connections that haven't been licked yet. My favorite ROM is Beanstown Jelly'Beans' as it has the stability and features of Samsung's stock software without the bloat and some extra tweaks baked in.
+1 for the JellyBeans recommendation. I was using that for several weeks up until today, when I decided to give it a break to try out PACman. I still have JB available as a restore file. If you're looking for something that resembles stock, go with an AOSP based ROM ( PAC man for example).
Did either of you read what he was looking for before answering? He wants something with note 3 features.

There is no best. This is a ridiculous question that gets asked every day. What's good for one person may not be for someone else.
You have to try them for yourself.
If there was a best, surely everyone would use only 1 rom....

Hi,
It's not a silly question - there are far too many custom roms with custom kernels. The combinations of these add up to an awful lot of flashing, not to mention then running it for a few days to get an idea on battery and performance. It would probably take weeks!
Anyways, for me, i rooted my stock UK rom using Chainfire 6.3, and then froze any bloatware apps i didn't use or want using Titanium Pro. This is now giving me better battery life than previously and running nice and smooth.
To give you an idea, i had around 25 hours moderate use with around 4.5 hours screen time.
Hope that helps a little. I'll probably try a custom rom sometime once things settle a little more, though i'm really really hoping for Jelly Bean now.....

What Processes did you freeze? I am considering this too but I don't see too many processes which drain the battery (unlike the S2 when I first got it). Thanks.
I love our somewhat reliable/stable JB ROMS (thank you, XDA Devs!!) But losing stock Note functionality with S-Pen (double-tap for S-Memo, press and hold for screen capture, Photo Editor) always kept me running back to stock Touch Wiz. I was a flash-ahloic til something I did broke GPS and made it unusable. So I Odin-ed back to stock and still couldn't get GPS working. Eventually, I took my Note to the AT&T Device Support Center and they flashed the most current Samsung Firmware and I'm good to go. I've been Stock, non-rooted for 28 days, 11 hours and minutes LOL.
So I've resisted even rooting my Note at this point. Just been playing around with different launchers and widgets. It's still fun just customizing the Note to my liking. But I found that lags and freezing still even happen on Stock non-rooted, things I used to blame on any particular ROM I'd flashed.
Now the flash addiction is creeping up on me...

I feel the same way. I have been a flashaholic since i had sonys xperia x10a. I, myself, have fallen in love with jellybam on the note. it has treated me quite nicely. no forcecloses. only one reboot but i dropped my phone so i think that was just from the battery popping out and in. other than that this rom is near perfect. its the best of all worlds. amazing battery life. hopefully we will be getting all those extra features soon when the official jb comes out.

Got the perfect cure for your flash addiction...try one of the Padawan Roms!!! My wife has been running V7 and now V8 for over a month...and has had 0 yes, zero. restarts or hiccups, I was amazed!!! The v8 is based on the rom from singapore, it's fast tight, and has lots of tweaks built right in...and it's a touchwiz rom so all the spen stuff works great. I'm a convert. Good luck

Just an update:
So I ended up flashing Jellybam and what a joy that ROM was! So many customization options and it just ran smooth. That is until I got a Random Reboot.
So then I flashed Paranoidandroid, put on LMT and found that it didn't work as well as I'd hoped as a replacement for Swipe Pad. Anyway, I proceeded to customize it to make it my daily driver when RR strikes 4xs in an hour.
At this point, I go running back to ICS: Novena. I dig the boot animation and that ROM has always been solid for me. And of course everything performs flawlessly: no RRs and great battery life.
But am I content? LOL
Lurking in the Blackstar Dev thread, I read about the combination of X and Flappjaxx ICS 3.0.2 kernel.
Getting to the point of this post:
That combination is AMAZING! And not in the hyperbolic sense. TRULY AMAZING!
This feels as fast as any JB ROM I've tried. Tho I'm not OC/UV, I'm only using Wheatley and battery life is PHENOMENAL!
So I'm still enjoying my "OG" Note and glad that we have a sharing community in XDA forums and gifted dev support, but if we never get any new ROMS for the lack of a source JB kernel from Samsung, I'm now on my Daily Driver.
Holla back if this combo works for you too.

I also enjoy cm9.1.0 with the FJ AOSP kernel ...

Those kernels are simply the best running code I've ever used ..
And the wheatley governor is ....well ....amazing on the note.
My thanks go out again, to our incredibly talented developers, and all of our loyal users.....for making the note run the way it was meant to be ......g

I don't know what will happen if you do that, but BSX is an ICS ROM and won't be compatible with a JB kernal. I recommend installing goo.im from the Play Store and search for Flappjaxxx in there: results will show his ROMs and kernals. Good luck!

Just switched from AT&T. I was on CleanROM and GoldenEye which were perfect in terms of speed, stability, and battery life. HyperDrive has been fun. Battery life is quite good. I flashed without a lot of the extras in the AROMA though. Kept it as stock as possible. Going to give BoneStock a try soon. I've used KT, Greenify, & Comadose/CrossBreeder on all of the ROMs I've run on both devices.

Asking for Rom recommendation is not something we support here on XDA. Users should go through the development thread read and try out what they find that might be what they want. Here all you will get is a free for all of users listing what works for them.
Second point is that questions belong in the Q&A section not in the General section.
Thread closed.
Have a great day!
So long story short I came from a long line of HTC phones and one of the big things I miss about the ROMs is when the developers would take a stock OTA and debloat everything down to just the basic elements and throw a launcher on it. You would get all of the benefits of the OTA (better camera, better reception, etc) but still have the slimmed down fast OS. AI still have not seen that here. I was wondering if any dev would mind stripping a ROM down or if anyone just feels like I do?

Just pick a nicely debloated ROM and then use a launcher like Holo HD. You can customize the heck out of it...you will never know TW is even there.

Not sure how exactly the note 2 is compared to the S3 that I had, but this isn't necessarily true. CM based roms have to reverse engineer the radio resulting in worse signal and data handoffs relative to touchwiz. As far as I know, there has never been a fully functioning touchwiz camera ported to CM. Correct me if I am wrong.
If you want better signal and camera, touchwiz is your only option. I've flashed dozens of CM based roms, and all have the similar data and csmera issues. Remember, your experience may vary, but this is all relative to touchwiz, which has the proprietary drivers.

Now, as a long time XDA user, I know these types of threads are frowned upon...oh well.
Anyway, I just picked up a DNA as I'm seriously sick of Samsung and decided to get back to my roots and the company I loved for so long. The DNA has been out for quite some time and hence the reason I ask the question.
For the long time DNA users, what Sense rom gave you the best overall performance and battery life? You know...that old favorite of yours that you compare all new roms to. Android version and Sense version is not important to me. I'm just curious the rom name and maybe a kernel you used, if at all.
I want to play around with this device, so just looking for some input by those who have been with the DNA since the beginning.
Also, I'm on TWRP 2.7 if that matters. So, if it is suggest I change recovery before flashing your suggested rom, please say so.
Thanks in advance to anyone who may reply!

Yes you can flash one. The only one that I really liked on sense 4+ was viper. The old Rom is still around it's just way down there in the development thread or original dev thread I can't remember what one it's in. But it's around and it was very good when I used to run it.

Awesome. I'll take a look for it. I do enjoy Sense 6 (current Viper), but I'm having a urge to relive my EvoLTE glory days with some Sense 4+..
Thanks for the replies, Jaggar. I do appreciate.

I think battery life is also related to kernel. You can test some other kernel on your phone then some kernel may be good at battery life.
I actually ended up flashing the Viper Rom that still has the Sense 4+ and battery life had been awesome. I tried the latest, but just wasn't as good..maybe tonight I will try Sense 6 again with a kernel. Any suggestions?
