Hi.
I am using a new mobile operator. Since their network is very new and there are a lot of places where there is no coverage of their own network, they offer free roaming on another operator.
The problem is that, if the signal strength is very weak on the home network, it will take a lot of time for the phone to automatically start roaming. I've seen a situation when my coverage was 0 out of 4 bars and the phone was still connected to this network for a few minutes before it finally "decided" to roam.
Is there a way I can have a better control over this process, for example to choose that it will roam to the other network immediately if the signal strength drops below 1 bar?
Thanks.

As long as I know it is not possible.
But if you know the name of temporary(that roamong operator)
Then you can try this.(when signal is low)
1)Go to settings===>Wireless and network settings===>Mobile network.
2) Click Select operators. It will search (be patient. Takes lot of time).
3) When list appears select the other operator.

hi!
i am using a tmous hd2 with the stock 2.13 rom and the recently released 2.15 radio. up till now i havent really bothered using packet data on my phone because i am a wifi guy... only recently did i start using packet data frequently...
i noticed two things out of place:
1) for some reason i have never seen hspa service on my phone. my operator runs a 3.6mbps dl 2mbps ul hspa services. whenever i switch to 3g and connect data, i always get a 3G written over the signal bars. and i have never seen speeds over 42kB/s (~384kbps) in several months of use. i have full signal strength in both 3g and 2g. if i am running 2g, then i get an E as expected over the signal bars. i have put in all the access point settings as defined by my operator (which are common for both 2g and 3g). i have enabled hsdpa/hsupa from winmo settings->connections->advanced n/w. is something amiss with the hspa settings on the phone? i really want to confirm that i have my phone set up right before i muster the courage to call up customer care.
(for someone from bombay, india, i am running mtnl 3g prepaid with following settings:- ap:gprsppsmum u:mtnl pass:mtnl123. this in itself is quite baffling because mtnl delhi has separate aps for 2g and 3g whereas the bombay network has the same ap for both. ap=access point)
2) i have never seen the H/3G/E/G icons on my taskbar. i mean the ones that are NEXT TO the signal strength icons. the space between the headset and the signal strength is always empty. isnt that particular icon supposed to show 'availibility' of the respective type of data connection? i read somewhere a long time ago that the icons are ROM dependent. but i am pretty sure i have seen snapshots of tmous phones with those icons...
i have been using bsnl cellone 3g since feb and i always got H in south india, even while roaming,...in few cities up north, like lucknow, i got only 3g icon displayed..i guess it should be H in mumbai..
from what you say, i think you have not enabled HSDPA/HSPA setting in the phone...do that..it is in settings/menu/all settings/connection manager or ?phone / advanced network ( i think...can't tell exactly where...iam presently on the android side...)

no, i have enabled hspa (both directions) from advanced network. i said that in my original post as well. what windows rom were you running? also did you just get H speeds or see the H icon as well?
both H icon and speeds on 1.48 wwe and 3.14 wwe roms
Hi I use an unlocked TMOUS HD2 here in Italy with the italian carrier PosteMobile and experience the same problem of silenced3 (almost the same as I still haven't tried a cellular data connection): My phone doesn't show the kind of cellular signal available, only when it data connection is activated it says what type of connection it's using. Anyone knows how to solve this?
Thank you for your help...
When I listen to internet radio for a long period of time my phone goes into a 1x connection. I have to reboot to get it back to 3g. is there a hack on the phone I can do to stop this from happening like a ip refresher or something. it stuck on 1x until I reset the phone. I believe this is sprint doing this on purpose. even though they advertise they dont do this. I use only around 2 gb of data a month.
any help would be nice. I don't want to have to restart my phone every 2 hours when I feal like streaming online music at work
highly doubtful they do that. cause i've been on 3g streaming for hours on end and dont get throttled. Are you in a bad signal area?
no full bars its possible It could be my phone or I am new to sprint and may not have the same limitaions most people have.
Here in hawaii,I usually get 300-1mbps on 3g. However, at home where my signal is 3-4 bars has horrible speeds, and I also notice the same problem. About 5-10mb and the 1x icon shows up.
Honestly I think its a tower issue.
Does it go into 1x on any tower while streaming?

The bars on your phone have nothing to do with data signal strength. The bars are for voice signal only.

How do we find data signal strength? Or do you mean the bars stand for signal strength and not signal speed?

It's a big annoying, but you have to go into the dialer, dial ##DEBUG#, go into EVDO Engineering (for 3G, since 1X is your voice and LTE is your LTE) and read the Rx Power. It should be different from your 1X Rx Power and your LTE Rx Power (if you have LTE).
I looked for a data signal meter widget a while back and never found one that worked or pulled from the right info (usually people just pulled from the Settings->About->Network->Signal Strength info, which is 1X (Voice).
Here some more info: http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/2...to-determine-your-actual-lte-signal-strength/

I can say with a known certainty that Sprint does not "throttle" or "cap" data usage on a mobile device. Only the top < 1% of abusers are contacted by sprint, which is usually a letter of intent to cancel service if data abuse continues, or a notice of cancellation. No "throttling" or "capping"
I just find it odd that my phone randomly goes from 3g speed to 1g only after multible hours of use and there was no movement from the phone where I never had a issue.I can go days or weeks without going to 1g when its on 1g I have to restart the phone it will not go back into 3g mode.

I'm on MIUI dev. At my place the Jio service is pretty poor. I get the max. speed of 100KBps throughout the day, and only during the nights I am able to reach upto 3or4MBps.
But, what I've seen is that sometimes in between, my cell connects to some other Cell Tower (Jio's only). I can tell you this because the network strength is always full at my place but when it gets switched to the other Tower's signal, the strength is around 40-50%. And, suddenly the speed gets boosted upto 2MBps from 100KBps, for the brief 10secs. Then again the network strength goes full and the speed comes back to its normal.
So, what I think, is that there's another cell tower which is farther then this one but has less no. of users and hence better speeds.
So, is there anyway that I can switch to that network permanently. I've read about setting the phone's modem to a particular freq..
So, guys tell me what I can do.
TL; DR How can I use the other cell tower of my network which has better internet speeds but has weaker network strength.

Tested it. Works as it says, but the speed is still same. Hell, Im getting speed around 100kbps+ on Band 5, while on Band40 the speed is around 60kbps. Although the network strength is full in both bands.
Anyway, thanks for your reply. It must be problem with Jio services only.
I'm experiencing an odd issue on the SD RedMi Note 4 of my wife (ROM: v8.5.8.0 NCFMIED): where LTE signal is weak and other mobiles switch to GSM (2G) and are still reachable, the RedMi of my wife is still trying to get LTE signal, ending up offline for _long_ times.
I tried to switch preferred mode to "LTE/UMTS auto (PRL)" (mido default choice when "prefer LTE" is selected is "LTE/TD-SCDMA/UMTS", which appears to include the Chinese 3G standard too) like my OnePlus 3, which never looses network, but it didn't help: the only way to have it reliably reachable is switching to "GSM only".
I didn't find anything relevant neither by searching nor by browsing the first 30 pages of this subforum: is there anything we can do to improve this? Thanks!
go to about phone. tap multiple times on total memory, a window will open up. open phone information 1,2. choose type of network you want from multiple options

That indeed solves the issue as I wrote, but I don't think that my wife would be happy if I tell her she has to check the signal all the time and, eventually, _try_ to manually switch to "GSM only", and go back when the signal strength improves... that should be modem job!
Update: the affected SIM was in slot 2; moving the SIM to the first slot seems to improve the mode switch. Still the sensitivity doesn't seem exceptional, or perhaps there is some other issue (1), but at least it seems to correctly switch from 4G to 3G and even 2G where the signal is weak.
Testing in "LTE/UMTS auto (PRL)" mode now (I don't need TD-SCDMA here, I assume there is less overhead with less modes); wondering whether is a modem (read: Qualcomm) issue or a MIUI bug.
(1) sometimes the device still looses the network where my OP3 seems connected with very weak signal (-105 dBm) and LTE Discover reports "Potential eCSFB issue detected" (which sounds odd since eCFSB is a CDMA thing, and there aren't any CDMA network here in Italy AFAIK: could it be the way LTE Discover tells that the phone is unable to handshake an existing network?), until it reconnects. Moreover, it seems that RN4 tends to prefer 3G over 2G even when mobile data is off, which is not a good strategy IMO.
Edit: LTE Discover reports "Potential eCSFB issue detected" also on OP3, which works perfectly: it seems its shown when the terminal was unable to successfully register on a network and stays idle until the next connection attempt
I have sort of similar and opposite problems in the USA.
Mine switches from LTE to whatever H+ is and then never switches back on its own. I'm blaming Xiaomi over Qualcomm.

I tried it, it worked if I used the root option and manually hit the refresh button. I read that the auto refresh only works if the signal is one bar or whatever or less.
My signal is strong when it's on H+, so it would never get low enough to make it auto refresh.
What I need is something that would switch my preferred network to Prefer 3G and back to Prefer LTE whenever I'm on H+ for a while, because that gets me back on LTE every time provided that there's LTE in that area.
My Redmi Note 4x international should be capable to connect to the 1800mhz band, which is available in my neighborhood. Sadly I haven't had 4g or LTE since I've gotten this phone (4 weeks) any ideas why it won't connect?

Thank you: started testing. It seems that, despite the better signal, even after refreshing the device still ignores 2G and tries to connect in LTE or H+ mode. I'll see in the next days.

Yep, that's very same issue I'm experiencing. I was feeling alone: in the MI forums I couldn't find no one complaining about that.
Did you notice that when the device connects to a Wi-Fi network the cellular signal indicator suddenly rises (it appears to indicate Wi-Fi signal strength) and appears "4G" next to operator's name, even if cellular data is off?
Too bad, if RN4 didn't have such a bugged radio it was a real bang for the buck.

Try to get some more info from the "LTE Discovery" app: is the device registered on the 4G network but internet access is absent or the device doesn't even register on the 4G network? Does the device detect the 4G signals?
In this thread we are discussing about the opposite problem: our devices don't switch to 2G when the signal is weak...

Unfortunately it didn't help: it doesn't seem to improve overall operation. It even asks to refresh the Wi-Fi connection when there is no cellular signal...
There is really something ill in this modem. Sometimes the signal indicator shows Wi-Fi signal strength instead of cellular. I hope some future release will fix at least some of these issues.

Thank you. I think it's not necessary: since yesterday I'm running MIUI v9.0.3.0 and things improved considerably. I'm quite sure the issue was MIUI 8 which had a complete modem mess, not the app, that was doing its honest work just as it was possible.
Poco F1 (MIUI Global Stable V11.0.8.0.QEJMIXM ROM) has significantly better 4G signal strength than 3G or 2G. In fact I got problem with that, when I'll recieve call or make a call, the phone automatically from 4G goes to 3G or 2G, and in that moment signal strength bars goes from 5 bars (4G) to 1-2 bars (3G) and often other side cannot hear my voice. Later I choose manualy network (3G or 2G) and when I try yo make a call => "Cellular network not available"
What should be the problem? Is it software or hardware problem? ...btw I make a clean install/flash thru fastbot of MIUI Stable V11.0.8.0.QEJMIXM few days ago, but I cannot notice some differences

It means that VoLTE (Voice over LTE) is not enabled or it is not available in your region. That is why it is switching to 3g network to make a call. As for the signal bars, never trust miui on that. Got to about phone -> and find a option where it shows imei, sim status, etc.

Yes, in my country VoLTE is not available, but I don't see that as an insufficiency, I use it only for data/internet 4G.
MIUI signal bars should "work" same for both 4G and 3G/2G, i think it is some other problem. Btw use it code *#*#4636#*#* (testing mode) and there i can manually set my network (WCDMA only, GSM only, LTE only, CDMA, TD-SCDMA/UMTS... and all variations of them). Usually LTE strength signal is "70-80dbm / 50-60asu". When I set to WCDMA only or GSM only it is ""100-110dbm / 1-10asu" and that's in the middle of the city (where I live). When I enter some Mall, stairs of building or hike on local mountains, when I want to make a call, the result is "CELLULAR NETWORK NOT AVAILABLE " :crying:
Does it can be antenna problem? But then, why 4G signal is far better than 3G? Does it have separate antennas??? I got no idea really what should be the problem about that

Without VoLTE you cannot make a call on 4G network. The SIM will automatically switch to 3G/2G. It's the same across all phones, all carriers, and in any country.

It is OK that. I know that. In fact, I GOT PROBLEM WITH 3G AND 2G SIGNAL STRENGTH. I mention 4G just to compare signals. I got 5 bars on 4G and 1-2 bars on 3G/2G on the same location. I have super fast internet thru 4G (50-100mbps), while when I set manually to 3G it didn't even connect data, furthermore, I cannot make a call (Cellular network not available). Obviously it is a strange problem. I'm not arguing about VoLTE or 4G...
Is it the same antenna for 2G, 3G and 4G signal? Should I replace it? I will repeat myself again, I can't get HOW CAN 4G signal be better than 3G/2G?!
I insert both SIM cards (with POCO F1 I use dual sim cards) to other phones (Xiaomi Mi4c, Alcatel Pixi 4, Lenovo A536...) and everything is OK with all of them. So, that means it is a POCO F1 problem.

Try changing slots. Or try a different carrier. The culprit could be your network provider. If the problem still persists go to any service center and get it checked. BTW it is actually strange to see that 3g/2g network is weaker than 4g. Usually it is the other way around.
