The other day I used the method tomsgt123 show in YouTube video with vroot. Root successful. However when I then downloaded goomanager and I installed to openscript, then I Rebooted to recovery the phone would not reboot properly(I got the green DROID dude and a message that phone can not boot to normal mode.) I then tried several time manually enter recovery mode to no avail. Same screen every time. I can get the phone operating normally by tapping volume down. I'm thinking that I need to fix this so my root will be worthwhile. Can someone help this noob out?
Thanks in advance.

Do you do a battery pull? When you turn the phone on, hold power and volume down (?) to boot into download mode. Then just cancel. It will get you out of that loop.
I found this suggestion too, Im not sure if that is from pulled battery state or not
hold the power button and the down volume key and it should ask you if you want to install a custom os or not and then you just hit cancel and it will boot regularly

Yes I am doing battery pull. Otherwise at the DROID dude I can not power down with power button.
I have already used the that approach. I did not explain as detailed as I should have. I can get the phone to boot up normally but I can not get to a place where I can flash. At least I think that's what I am trying to do.

Super thanks. I don't mind reading that's how I got here in the first place. However with my limited but growing vocabulary I'm not always sure where to look(is my current situation called a soft brick?) just trying g to learn. Ok, I might have missed something but, the point of rooting is not to just be able to say you are rooted and restart your phone? As I understand it you should reboot to a recovery mode that then allows you to flash rom's and themes and other cool custom stuff. And most importantly allow me to delete bloatware. I don't seem to be able to do this with where I am right now.

You have no recovery to boot into...The only option to load any roms is to use safestrap. Safestrap is a type of recovery. HD11 is the only rom available to use. You really need to do some reading of these forums to understand what you can and can't do. Plenty of threads and posts

Exactly! Just because you have root doesn't mean you automatically get recovery. Root is the first, and most times, easiest step.

There is so much amazing information on this forum that it is hard to know where to start reading and if you did a teary in the right place. I took a leap of faith after reading and watching videos. So I guess my next step is to read more about safestrap and a few other areas I've been pointed towards.
Sometimes knowing where to start is more important than knowing where you are going. Thanks for all your efforts.

Hi,
I have just rooted the S3 using odin. All installed ok. Installed ClockworkMod recovery and selected the backup ROM option. Phone rebooted in to recovery and the backup failed.
Used the volume keys and selected reboot now and hit the power button and the menu dissapeared leaving the Clockworkmod logo in the middle of the screen, nothing happened. Click the power button again and the menu comes back. Click the front button and nothing happened.
Tried turning off the phone and it goes back in to the recovery menu. Pull out the battery and put back in and goes back to recovery.
I can't select any option in recovery menu and can't reboot the phone normally. Any ideas?
To confirm v 5.8.4.1 is installed.
Sorted!
Noticed my error. I was using the Recovery mod app from the play store and not the CWM app installed by odin.
Repeated the odin procedure and booted back up fine.

Follow the exact procedure from when you first rooted the S3 that fixes it then don't use the recovery rom app from the play store. You should see an app called 'CWM' only use that.

I've been running Hyperdrive rom on CWM, and decided I wanted to try Illusion. So I rebooted into recovery, deleted cache and data, then installed the Illusion rom. At the end a yellow triangle popped up telling me that the software was insecure or something, and told me to go to a Verizon store.
I read that this was due to the kernel not being loki'd, so like an idiot I went back to Odin and flashed a kernel.
Soon after my screen went black, but I could hear the sounds of me raising/lowering the volume and turning the screen on and off.
I took the battery out and put it back in, and now all I see is an empty battery imposed on a black background with a frozen loading-circle int he middle.
Have I bricked my phone?
Edit:
When I unplug the phone from my computer and turn it on I see the Samsung boot-up along with the word Custom and unlocked icon above it. From there all I get is a black screen.
I can hold the lock+home+lower volume keys and I get the "Press volume up key if you want to download a custom OS" and "Volume down to cancel (restart phone)" screen, then the little green android shows up. Is there anything I can do from here?
You likely have "soft bricked" it, as long as you can still access it with odin or push files to it with adb you are not hard bricked... if you can, get the current verizon firmware from Sammobile.com and flash that with odin. This or fastboot are your best options. Take your time. Dont make things worse by trying things without reading completely. As long as you can flash and see it from adb or odin you can get it fixed up. Good luck

Yes, I'm watching this thread eagerly haha, I would like to fix my phone
So I held power+volume up+home and entered stock recovery. I chose the option "wipe data/factory reset" and afterwards rebooted the system, but to no avail. I'm going to try again right now, wiping the cache partition as well.
Edit: Ah! After I wiped the cache my system auto-rebooted and it successfully booted up. Factory settings!

help
i tried installing omega 4.3 using twrp it failed, then i couldn't restore my back up. i can get into download mode and try to flash stock rom with odin but it fail's every time and a msg with su rev check fail fused 2 binary 1 appears on the hand set. it also won't even try and boot it just says fw encountered an issue any help would be much appreciated thanks kyle
I just rooted a Verizon GS4 (VRUAME7) using this method. Everything went fine. I verified root with Root Checker, rebooted the phone, checked again.
Then I followed this method to install TWRP. When I rebooted the device as instructed, it got stuck on a splashscreen that has and Android logo and says "Downloading...Do not turn off target!!" :'(
The upper left in red says "Could not do normal boot. ODIN MODE"
I tried a battery pull, vol dwn + power, vol up + power and vol down + up + power.
How do I get back to normal boot or into TWRP recovery? I have a ROM I'd like to install, and as of now...it won't get past that splash screen.
What do I do?
Thanks!
First off youre in the wrong section. Questions go in the Q and A section. Second your on the me7 ota and you cant install a custom recovery/roms on the me7 ota. To get your phone booting again you will have to flash the stock recovery (not sure if someone has posted a stock recovery flashable via odin as I havent looked)or flash me7 again.

This worked perfectly.
Hopefully it'll won't fall back into that. Can't wait until I can ROM this sucker. Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag.
Since you have the update, boot the phone up in Odin mode and plug in your USB cable.
If you installed the desktop software you will have a Verizon folder in your start menu.
In that folder there should be an app "Verizon Software Upgrade Utility"
Run that and it should tell you you are up to date.
There is a repair utility within that app, run that and it should fix your problem.
It takes a while because it downloads the rom and then flashes it.
No guarantees, but I believe that will get you back to stock unrooted.
Sent from a Galaxy S4... Far far away
Sounds like he just got into download mode and didn't recognize it, and his rom, recovery, and everything was untouched.
To the OP, you're probably good if your phone has booted normally, works fine, and you're still rooted. You can't flash any roms or mods, but you can still apply some mods by simply pushing them to your /system partition, setting permissions, and rebooting. Either follow the instructions for which directory to put the file/files in, or you can open up a flashable zip and use the same path as the directories in the zip.
You should even be able to push a modded framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk and rename the old ones, once people start building ME7 roms, though I can't guarantee it'll work. All you can do is try, and now you know how to get into Download mode to use Odin if it doesn't work.
As far as plain lag goes, just freeze alot of the bloat, there's around 50 apks (in MDK, anyway) that aren't doing anyone any good. Then grab a cpu app like Trickster Mod and see what, if any, parameters the stock kernel enables you to change. If you can set the Interactive cpu governor, Deadline scheduler, Performance gpu governor, and increase the read-ahead size, you should see a significant improvement.

Coming from HTC so this is a little different for me..I did search these out, just want to be sure.. First, will qbkings method still work since it was done on the first version for this phone and its now on MJ4? For TWRP, when you flash a new rom, what are you wiping, Factory, System, and internal or just system? Any other advice is appreciated, just don't want to screw crap up... Thanks

I used cf-auto root on my phone. It trips Knox but I didn't care about that. You can find it in the original development forum.
As far as what to wipe for a custom ROM just read the first few posts of the ROM you are looking at and the Devs will be very specific as to the steps needed to avoid potential issues.
All the Devs here are very helpful if you have any issues as well.
Hope that helps.

Welcome to the community, bro.
Here's a starter set of instructions, followed by a backup set if you get stuck. [Make sure that you are on MJ4 prior to doing this.]
---------STARTER STEPS
1. Download TWRP (tar/odin flashable) from teamw.in (V2.6.3.7)
2. Download and install Samsung drivers for mobile phones (you may already have these installed)
3. Download Odin V3.07 (you may already have this too, link takes you to what appears to be a master thread for Odin)
See this post for a nice visual and comments, pic and thread provided by a fine gentleman that has about the coolest user name I've seen on any forum
At this point you can decide whether or not you want simply stock rooted, which TWRP can give you without flashing anything, or if you want to install a basic stock rooted rom, kindly provided by @freeza, can select DeOdex or Odex, thread here
4. Download MJ4 DeOdex or Odex and place it on your phone
5. Power off your phone
6. Put your phone into Download Mode (voldown+home+power)
7. Flash TWRP with Odin and boot into it once done (volup+home if Odin auto reboots your phone or volup+home+power if it's off)
8. If you decided to simply go stock rooted, then go to reboot>system and TWRP will ask if you want root, if not, then proceed to flash MJ4 DeOdex or Odex
9. Profit
---------PLAN B IF ABOVE FAILS YOU
[Some just can't get Odin to play nice with the TWRP tar, don't know why.]
1. Follow QBKing77 video and install root using CF method, thread here
2. Download img file for TWRP from Team Win site, flash using app from Play Store called Flashify
3. Flash recovery
4. Follow the rest of the outlined under the heading "Starter Steps"
---------AFTERTHOUGHTS...
Once successful, go into TWRP, backup only your EFS, then separately, backup boot, system, and data. Throw your EFS backup on your PC and Dropbox in case of emergency (hopefully you won't need it).
Pick a rom you like, and start fiddling. Support the devs, have a blast.
I hope this helps.
Good luck!

Yeah, it is. But there's a reason I layed the steps out so broadly and specifically; half of that was given to me (the stuff above the Plan B line) by one whom knows far more than most, and I still had to do the stuff for which I hadn't planned. Worse, I got stuck at that horrifying yellow Sprint logo, with no bootup. I pulled my SD card and the battery, powered up again, and I only then had success. Most have no issues, but thankfully enough have that there were similar experiences conveyed across these forums.
I really hope that you have a trouble free experience.

Worked like a charm, thanks again Mic. They only thing I can't do though is how do you get to TWRP from reboot, I can do it from goomanager but I would think I could power down the phone, press the three buttons and it would take me there.

Download the small zip in this thread, choosing Odex or DeOdex,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2486526
Go into TWRP the way you've described, flash the zip, and you'll have a 4-in-1 reboot menu. After it installs, hard press the power key, and when you select reboot, you'll get other options (recovery, &c).
Good luck!

Ugh...I didn't know that you had no custom ROM installed. Go into TWRP and do a factory reset. You should be good-to-go.
Let me get some help for you...stand by.. @freeza may be able to assist. Dude, don't do anything until we get some validation.

Try to go into the bootloader, and follow the instructions:

Look at this single post for exactly how your screen should look:

The button combo you're describing is taking you into the bootloader. Try the other direction with the power button to get into recovery.

You're going into the bootloader. Hold power+home+volume up. You'll get into TWRP, bro.

No problem. Just don't let that this dispel ya. Pick a rom and start flashing. There are a lot of good choices, you've already tripped Knox, so have at it, defile the thing and make it work the way you want.

Please Help! I have a 4.3 MJ7 Rooted Galaxy S4 running Hyperdrive. I bought the phone this way. Yesterday, I tried loading an OTA Hyperdrive update. It gave me two options - 1. Boot into Recovery, 2. Reboot and install. I picked reboot and install. When the phone came back on it is stuck in, Downloading... do not turn off target !!. It says at the top in small red letters - Could not do normal boot. ODIN MODE.
I have taken battery out, turned back on holding power, volume up, and home at same time to get into recovery and it just comes back to Downloading... do not turn off target !! screen every time. I just want to get this to power back on and I am unfamiliar with Odin and how to proceed. Please Help! Thank You.

Thank You for your reply. I got it! I had to hold volume DOWN, power, home. This time when it came on it had option of cancel or contiune. I hit cancel and it went into normal boot. I rebooted just to be sure everything was good and it was! Hope this can help someone else. I thought I was gonna have to unroot root then reinstall rom again. ALL of which i don't know how to do.

I could be wrong here since I'm no longer a hyperdrive user...
I think when it tried sending you to recovery to install the update, that wasn't for SafeStrap. So when it did the reboot into recovery deal it was trying to send you to some form of custom recovery. Hence the error you ran into.
Like I said I could be wrong. Maybe ask the people in the hyperdrive thread. They'll know

I see you picked " reboot and install" actually... So you got me. I never had real good luck with otas from within ROMs anyways.

good practice never to take the rom updates that way in my opinion
Pull battery. Hold power and down. When screen comes up press down. Profit.
