Please Help! I have a 4.3 MJ7 Rooted Galaxy S4 running Hyperdrive. I bought the phone this way. Yesterday, I tried loading an OTA Hyperdrive update. It gave me two options - 1. Boot into Recovery, 2. Reboot and install. I picked reboot and install. When the phone came back on it is stuck in, Downloading... do not turn off target !!. It says at the top in small red letters - Could not do normal boot. ODIN MODE.
I have taken battery out, turned back on holding power, volume up, and home at same time to get into recovery and it just comes back to Downloading... do not turn off target !! screen every time. I just want to get this to power back on and I am unfamiliar with Odin and how to proceed. Please Help! Thank You.

Thank You for your reply. I got it! I had to hold volume DOWN, power, home. This time when it came on it had option of cancel or contiune. I hit cancel and it went into normal boot. I rebooted just to be sure everything was good and it was! Hope this can help someone else. I thought I was gonna have to unroot root then reinstall rom again. ALL of which i don't know how to do.

I could be wrong here since I'm no longer a hyperdrive user...
I think when it tried sending you to recovery to install the update, that wasn't for SafeStrap. So when it did the reboot into recovery deal it was trying to send you to some form of custom recovery. Hence the error you ran into.
Like I said I could be wrong. Maybe ask the people in the hyperdrive thread. They'll know

Pull battery. Hold power and down. When screen comes up press down. Profit.

I have build ME7 (rooted) and I thought I'd see what happens if I installed a recovery using ROM Toolbox. What happened is that I now cannot boot my phone. I get a large green Andy with "Downloading" and "Do not turn off target!!" below it and the screen is stuck there. I tried a battery pull, but still I'm stuck there. These lines appear at the top left of the screen:
Could not do normal boot.
ODIN MODE
Product Name: SCH-I535
Current binary: Samsung official
System Status: Custom
CSB_CONFIG_LSB: 0x30
Write Protection: Enable
Can anyone please get me booting my phone again? Thanks so much. I tried rebooting into recovery (vol up + home + power), but the phone still does into Downloading mode.
UPDATE - Figured it out. Pressed vol down + power, waited a minute, released power button. Warning screen came up asking me to press vol up to continue into download mode or vol down to cancel. I pressed vol down and voila, I was able to boot my phone. Phew !
I have the same problem.
On boot, I get a screen that says:
Samsung
Unlock
Then it goes to that stupid Downloading Do Not Turn Off Target screen!
How the hell do I get TWRP to load? I can get back into the stock ROM by canceling the update, but I would really like to be able to install Eclipse on this phone!
Thanks guys!
From off - Power, vol up, and I think home button. Once it vibrates once, let go of power. Once it says booting recovery, let go of the other buttons.

That just takes me to the same screens as described above.
This is a brand new phone. Just bought it today. Could they have changed something?
I rooted with SuperSU and installed TWRP with GooManager.
If your on the me7 ota you cant load a custom recovery. Me7 patched the exploit that facilitated the use of a custom recovery. If your on mdk still I would try reinstalling it.

Nope. For now you are stuck on the ME7 you have (assuming you got ME7 from the OTA or it was installed when you bought the phone from VZW) which does not (cannot) have a custom recovery nor an unlocked bootloader. All that is possible as of this writing is to be able to root ME7. I have not seen anything documented where the root exploit in ME7 can be undone.
UPDATE - Apparently I was wrong. You can go back to stock ME7. From another thread:
Plug your phone into a Mac or PC, install the VZW utility, select repair device. It will download and flash the official firmware and change your status to official and your splash screen back to the normal samsung logo, not the open lock with custom. It will be ME7 and bone stock. Have done it and rerooted myself. Hope it helps.
And I also found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259

Ok, Thanks
Been playing with my phone all day and somehow it crashed/rebooted & now I'm getting "Process system isn't responding"ever time it boots back up. Im rooted and have TWRP recovery...made a backup before all this started. Tried restoring my backup, didnt work, nor did using ODIN to flash a stock file. Full wipes and format data doesn't do any good either...Any suggestions?
I had the same issue this morning and after wiping and odin'ing what seems liked 30 times for 4 hours, I ended up taking it back. BB swapped it out with no questions asked.
The only thing I can think that happened was I tried restoring a backup with TWRP. I thought I read on here that restoring was not a good idea right now.
Looks like I am going to have to return this as well...every time it boots I get that error message and then it reboots itself....Did you do anything to flash back stock status??

Oh yes, many, many times! After I got stuck in a boot loop (or bootup system error), I wiped every partition I could find on the phone using stock TWRP and OUDH recoveries. Than I would odin multiple times using the MI3 tar. The odin process would be successful, but I would get stuck in a boot-loop every time. I'm fairly savvy with Samsung phones as I have rooted all 5 that I've owned but I couldn't figure this one out so I just took it back.

After the successful Odin, have you tried booting into stock recovery and wiping data? That can often fix problems booting up after a restore..

The Sprint store is not going to have the software to restore your phone yet. So they will replace it as they want even be able to tell its rooted...Well unless they go into download mode which i don't see why they would do that right now. .. BUT This is something you can fix yourself. From what i read you only flashed the stock TAR once. Flash it again and see what happens. Pay attention to what you are restoring. The first time i rooted i couldn't make phone calls...I have no idea what cause it. Now i am on Stock but mi3 as i forgot to pull the SD card.. And its not that serious to go to mi5 at this point.
Edit: If stock still dosent work after multiple attempts.... GO ahead and flash stock rooted ROM. In the next week or so everything will be figured. out. There want be any big updates that you miss in the next month. I wouldn't worry about being on stock rooted or stock unrooted. All the same for now.
I've retried several times with the STOCK unrooted tar. No go with that. Just boot loops...
I didn't see where there is a stock rooted ROM. I'll look in the development areas for it. If you have link would you reply with the link?

When i boot into recovery, it freezes at the splash screen and nothing else happens. I have to pull the battery to do anything. Is there something i did wrong, or something i missed?

The other day I used the method tomsgt123 show in YouTube video with vroot. Root successful. However when I then downloaded goomanager and I installed to openscript, then I Rebooted to recovery the phone would not reboot properly(I got the green DROID dude and a message that phone can not boot to normal mode.) I then tried several time manually enter recovery mode to no avail. Same screen every time. I can get the phone operating normally by tapping volume down. I'm thinking that I need to fix this so my root will be worthwhile. Can someone help this noob out?
Thanks in advance.

Do you do a battery pull? When you turn the phone on, hold power and volume down (?) to boot into download mode. Then just cancel. It will get you out of that loop.
I found this suggestion too, Im not sure if that is from pulled battery state or not
hold the power button and the down volume key and it should ask you if you want to install a custom os or not and then you just hit cancel and it will boot regularly

Ok, I might have missed something but, the point of rooting is not to just be able to say you are rooted and restart your phone? As I understand it you should reboot to a recovery mode that then allows you to flash rom's and themes and other cool custom stuff. And most importantly allow me to delete bloatware. I don't seem to be able to do this with where I am right now.

You have no recovery to boot into...The only option to load any roms is to use safestrap. Safestrap is a type of recovery. HD11 is the only rom available to use. You really need to do some reading of these forums to understand what you can and can't do. Plenty of threads and posts

Exactly! Just because you have root doesn't mean you automatically get recovery. Root is the first, and most times, easiest step.

There is so much amazing information on this forum that it is hard to know where to start reading and if you did a teary in the right place. I took a leap of faith after reading and watching videos. So I guess my next step is to read more about safestrap and a few other areas I've been pointed towards.
Sometimes knowing where to start is more important than knowing where you are going. Thanks for all your efforts.
Okay so I have the No name rom running on my v10. I also run G4 Tweaksbox for general customization. This morning, I installed a TweaksBox UI Theme. Worked fine after restarting the apps but now after restarting the phone, I realize it doesn't play nice with this rom's patched system ui.
Wouldn't be a problem to fix, except I have no means of entering recovery. The keyboard shortcuts have never worked for me to boot into recovery. And now that SystemUI won't let android run long enough between error messages to allow usb debugging, I can't reboot into recovery using adb. Fastboot can only reboot to the bootloader.
I'm feeling stranded. Anyone have any ideas, I really don't wanna flash a system image and lose everything. I've gotten everything just the way I wanted after 3 or 4 days and haven't had a chance to back it all up. I was planning on doing that after the theming
Please
Help
Thanks

If you just need to get into recovery, it should definitely be doable. I had trouble with the button combination too, but i think I got it: with the phone powered off, hold power and volume down, just until the LG logo comes on. Release the power button only and then press it again, with volume down still depressed, and you should get a screen asking if you wanna factory reset. What I've read is that if you select yes, it doesn't actually wipe your data but takes you to recovery. Browse a few threads to verify if you like, I've seen people say that. Anyway, good luck and I hope you get it fixed.

That worked very well. Thank you. I'll remember the new key combo for future reference.

Glad it worked for ya. Just keep in mind, I was informed that if you ever happen to still have stock recovery installed, it WILL indeed wipe your data. It's only because TWRP is custom recovery that the data wipe doesn't work as it says
Good to know thank you
