EFS - if didnt backup, and solution? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi
A general question:
If I flashed a new rom and my IMEI got 0000000 or some other corrupted EFS issue, and I didnt backed up the EFS - is it fixable?
(Lets say that flashing stock roms did not fix the issue).
I want to unsderstand if EFS backup is that important?
tnx!

I hope these are hypothetical questions and that it hasn't happened to you already
EFS backup is the most important thing you should do first before you even think of flashing a new rom. It can avoid a lot of pain and help you to save some money because you do not have to send it to repair.
for more informations please read the stickies in general section, in your case espacially http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2393289 everything is documented there.

Fixable by Samsung, yes and you'd have to pay. Cheaper repair shops usually botch it.

Get ready to pay £50+ to get it fixed... Or just smash your phone and claim warranty..

Hello,
just new here in writing but read a lot, so i might have seen some posts that could help you (I've backed up everything but never had to restore EFS, so everything is theoretically).
The first step I would do - even if everything seems lost - make a full backup!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2206898 (Search for "Recoveries". If You played with KitKat - you should use a newer Recovery not from this site, but then you still know that).
Helping for your Problem this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021 (You should have a sticker somewhere - under tha battery - with the original IMEI)
Maybe if this didn't helped - this can be a try for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2392632
Just have seen this - but haven't tested yet.

But the link from Darkened_Sky is also very important to read (thanks, just read it now).
Good luck - :good:

[HELP] EFS Corruption

Hello guys, you are my only hope! For two days I've been trying to resurrect my i9300 from soft brick after flashing a custom rom. I've read tons of articles and threads about it, but having all this random information in mind makes my brain blow up!
So the thing is that my EFS is corrupted, it means I've lost the IMEI and Telephony. I didn't make a backup of it, so it's impossible to restore, tried to reflash to stock roms, other versions of modems, but nothing helped.
Is anyone who has faced this kind of problem and solved it?

I'm sorry I can't help, but I would like to know how did it get corrupted in the first place.
What exactly did you do to accidentally corrupt it.
I've just flashed an update of my previous CM based rom (in my signature) and that's it(
nothing you can do, should've made a backup. send it to service to replace the motherboard
The thread is in the wrong section, General is not for questions. Hit "report" and ask for it to be moved
Have you tried flashing a stock firmware?

Standard Answer .
You can try reading the multiple exact same posts > Lost EFS wrong IMEI .
Or take it to a service centre and pay for a repair .

[SOLVED] Lost IMEI, no backup

Hello everyone,
I know this is a common problem with a lot of solutions but I haven't managed to find a single one for the international S3 that doesn't basically say "Have a backup ready."
I accidentally flashed a kernel designed for one of the US variants and lost all my data info. I'd performed a full Nandroid backup beforehand but apparently those don't backup your EFS folder...news to me.
Does anyone know if there is actually a way of restoring your IMEI without a backup, or do I now just have a very expensive and small tablet?
Thanks in advance

Don't think so man. Sorry.
Have you double checked your internal and external storage? Sometimes when you flash roms/kernels they automatically back up your efs. I know siyah used to, and I think boeffla does.
Other than that, the only thing I can think of is service centre.

Cheers for the reply, I did find an efs backup from Siyah but it turned out to be from my old S2. Managed to eventually fix my problem by flashing the stock GS3 rom again. No idea why that worked but I'm glad it did! Lesson learned anyway, I'm making a backup right away.

4.2.2 EFS Problem

Hi
I know there is plenty of threads but i still dont know what to do (my english not so good)
So my history begins with stock I9300XXELLA i think - i rooted it and flashed some other roms later, few days ago i decided to try this 4.2.2 leak and i flashed fantasy rom. It asked me if i want to do backup of my efs so i did. Later it asked me about new modem i think, i agreed too. After installing this rom i found i cant connect to my network and my imei is generic (000499). I tried to restore my efs backup with ktool but it only got me to factory mode opening (ktool saw efs backup but couldnt find nv_data.bin there - its there i checked). Next thing i did was flashing stock rom
I9300XXELLA by ODIN and trying to restore efs again this time with Samsung I9300 EFS Backup. It said its complete but i still have no network and my imei is still generic. What should i do? I heard about 3 file rom but i dont know which to flash. Sorry for another thread about this but its my last hope.
PS. My efs backup looks like this EFS.tar.gz--->EFS(folder)-->files
Looks like efs restore didn't go right. Flash stock 4.1.2 , stock basebsnd again and try restoring it.
sent from the state where marijuanated muffins are NOT illegal !
I think my backup is wrong bcoz when i entered efs folder i had files in it and another /efs folder which had same files inside
Start at the beginning or simply take the phone to a service centre .
Basics read first.

Critical you read the first two posts
Ok i managed it, i flashed 4.2.2 with older modem than my 4.1.2 so i "downgraded" modem. This older one had different efs partition so i had to do was flashing XXEMG4 modem back : ) Thank you for replies

Not registered on network, EFS restore didnt help.

Fixed it by flashing a previously backed up Ariza-patched modem.
BACKUP YOUR MODEM!!!
Original Post
I've been getting "Not registered on network" even though my EFS backup properly restored.
I went from CM 10.1.3 with xxufme7 modem and azira patch to I9300XXEMH4 4.1.2.
As expected, I got the Not Registered on Network. So I Rooted my phone and intalled the apk for Azira patch but that didnt help.
So i restored the Nandrod backup of CM but I still get the Not registered on network error. I restored the efs but that didnt help. Azira patch wont download for some reason.
I looked around the forums all day. I got really confused, so i decided to post a thread.
What do I do?

To my knowledge Ariza won't work on v2 efs, which is what you updated to when you flashed EMH. If your efs backup was made BEFORE you flashed EMHNan , then you should be able to format efs and restore it. A normal Nandroid doesn't backup efs.
Go read general, stickies efs 'know this stuff' thread.
You read the stickied EFS/IMEI guide .
But has you have messed with wrong stuff stop flashing and pay for a service repair .

Ariza isnt downloading at all. Maybe the server's down or smth.
I did restore the EFS and its backup was done while in the ME7 firmware. I restored that. Nothing happened. No network. But I did get my IMEI back <Thank god>
Also, I have no idea what my country code is supposed to be, (I bought it second hand and the bottom sticker was torn out) so I am probably flashing a wrong firmware onto my phone. Anyway to tell which one I should download?
But, after ****ting my pants all day, I realised that I had backed up my Ariza patched modem from Philz recovery a while ago. So I restored my cyanogenmod backup, restored the EFS, and then restored the modem. Problem solved.
But I would love to have a pure stock phone without any patches though. I really want to flash the correct firmware onto my phone and I'd really appreciate any help on that topic.
Thanks for the info.

Having a bad day?
If you've flashed ariza patch then there is no way back to full stock without the original and unmodified efs folder.

I thought Ariza patch didnt touch the efs folder.
Also, is the EFS folder responsible for the "Not registered on network issue" or is it because of the modem? I've never quite understood that despite of all the stickies. because when I got my phone it had a 4.1.2 firmware on it, I updated it to ME7 4.2.2 and got the Network issue. I doubt anything happened to the EFS folder at that moment.
All those questions and more are answered in the thread I mentioned.
haha, Alright, I look throught it again.
Thanks for everything.
As OP's question is solved, further conversation can be carried on the dedicate threads.

[Q] HELP to back old IMEI

Please, I need help, my motherboard burned and bought a new one with no IMEI, after the technician installed the motherboard, it got generic IMEI "0049 ..." Before the burn motherboard, I had made a backup of the ROM "4.0.4" using CWM, and made a copy of the folder EFS "efs.img/efs.tar.gz" using KTOOL, not sure about KTOOL because was this in 2012^^, but I've tried everything I know, I have tried to restore using the KTOOL, already restored the backup using CWM, already flash ROM "4.1.2/4.3" via ODIN, I have done several reported here in some posts related about IMEI but it still fails, hope some enlightened can help me :/ sorry for my bad english

error of the technician, the imei is stored in the nand chip(comes with the mobo)and he should had flashed correctly it for you
now since you made a ktool backup(dont know what it is, but looks like a imei backup) and if this ktool is designed for the s3(so it backups all efs partitions, if i remember there are 3, can be wrong tho) you*should* could restore.
but there is a problem,if ktool is correct but its from 2012 that means it did a backup of the old style efs partiton (efsv1) witch dosent work anymore since Samsung upgraded it to efsv2 and downgrading will not help
what you should do is get a s3 with 4.1.2 or earlier and restore your efs to that, upgrade it to 4.3, and get a new efs backup
i could be wrong tho
Edit: i remember a thread about a guy fixing the imei issue without a backup, and i remember Reading a part where he formats the efs partition, so that should help, see if you can find it(i can´t look now). it was in the s3 forums
You cannot restore an efs backup to another handset or motherboard, it's also illegal to change the imei and discussion of this is banned on xda.
Your new motherboard is faulty, return it to the technician.

really? excuse me is that I see many people talking about it here and have never seen any warning from the moderators, I thought it was legal because everyone says that the IMEI does not change, even changing the motherboard. And I have the invoice from the phone, just did not want to take the support of samsung because they charge too much.
Backing up and restoring efs to same motherboard/handset is legal, trying to move the imei from your old motherboard to new is illegal for you to do.
