MTP on VZW Note 3 with Slackware Linux - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 General

Here's what I had to do to get MTP working on Slackware Linux.I'm providing the method as an update archive but it is a simple task if you wish to do it on your own, just read the internal script.
Instructions:
1. Place 'mtp.zip' on your device.
2. Reboot into Recovery.
3. Choose Install.
4. Find and select 'mtp.zip'.
5. Reboot.
6. Plug the device into Linux.
7. Wait until the Verizon CD Installer has unmounted.
You may need to install something on Linux to provide MTP . This is probably the simplest:
https://github.com/hanwen/go-mtpfs
The text at the bottom has a link to pre-compiled binaries.
Here is the script I use to mount/unmount MTP (usinf 64-bit binary):
------
#!/bin/bash
delay=0
if [ "$1" == "on" ]; then delay=1; go-mtpfs.x86_64 -allow-other=true -android=true /media/mtp&
elif [ "$1" == "off" ]; then fusermount -u /media/mtp
fi
sleep $delay
mount|grep "/media/mtp" >/dev/null && echo MTP is active. || echo MTP is disabled.
------
USAGE:
mtp on # Mounts the device at /media/mtp. The directory must exist.
mtp off # Un-mounts the device.
mtp # Reports the state.
Merry Christmas!

Not trying to be funny, but what is the point of this? My Note 3 already mounts as MTP after you chose to do so. Meaning plugging into PC, pull down notification, and chose MTP. Or Plug into PC, wait about 30seconds, and then phone will automatically change to MTP and you can see both internal storage and your SD card under explorer. Am I missing something here?
Now if you can bypass that Verizon CD Installer and go straight to MTP, than you would be on to something.

Mine did not, nor did any when I bought it. Which version did you first have this ability with, MI9, MJ7, or MJE? Did you add any support applications on the PC which added this ability? I am still using MI9.

Working on it.

All versions I believe. When I 1st got it, that's how I was transferring data to my phone. Also how I transferred the files needed to root my device onto my device.Used Stock, Hyperdrive and Beanstown ROM and they all varied from MJ7 to MJE and they all had MTP just fine. I believe all Samsung phones have MTP built in. How else would they expect us to plug the device into our PCs.
EDIT: I know I enable "Developer Options" on my phone by going into the "About" settings and tapping build number about 7 times or so. Then went into Developer Options and enabled "USB Debugging". That might be it.

Yes, you are correct. When I got the Note 3 I was on Windows and did not use MTP because I could not access the files with any program, only File Explorer used MTP. After I switched to Linux I was not able to use MTP until I applied the method here, so maybe this is only useful on Linux.
What I really want is UMS enabled.

Update USB Drivers?

I recently rooted my Eris and I'm unable to flash a custom recovery because I can't get the USB drivers to update with those found in the SDK files. When I try to update the drivers Windows tells me that I have the most up to date drivers installed. It's because of this I cannot see my phone in the command prompt and can't get the custom recovery to work.
Has anyone tried putting the recovery files on their SD and using a terminal emulator?
Any ideas on updating the USB drivers?
If I flashed a custom Rom (as risky as that is without a recovery) could I then use nandroid or some other recovery? Or would I still need to use SDK?

download htc sync that should fix ur problem , it did for me
Yes HTC sync updated mine as soon as your phone is acknowledged by HTC sync it should update your usb drivers
FYI HTC sync did NOT work for me on Windows 7. I had to do some pretty annoying stuff to stop windows from installing the regular drivers automatically. If HTC sync doesn't work I can try to help.
If HTC Sync doesn't help, try the following steps.
1. Unplug your Eris from the PC
2. Open Device Manager and delete the Android device
3. Reboot your PC
4. Once in Windows, connect your Eris
5. The drivers should load automatically, if not point it to the SDK drivers folder
Good luck!
Any more ideas
First I tried downloading HTC Sync on my laptop (running Vista) and that didn't do it. Then I deleted the drivers and tried to manually download them back with the ones in the USB folder of SDK and still it wouldn't work.
So I started over and downloaded SDK and Java to my pc (Windows 7) and tried to update the drivers with the ones found in SDK and it wouldn't let me. So I deleted the drivers, unplugged my phone, and plugged it back up. Before I could attempt to direct it to download the intended USB drivers, Windows 7 had already updated with the drivers of it's choice. I can't win for losing.
If you don't mind using one of those "Live" Linux CDs, you could install the recovery using fastboot.
No need to install anything on the PC, and no drivers are needed for Linux, no SDK, no Java, no adb; just make sure to run fastboot as root.
The downloads of fastboot and the Amon_RA recovery are small, so they will easily fit in /tmp.

I've never used Linux but I'm willing to try. Please tell me more. Are there "how tos" for this?
When you have your phone plugges in do you have it set to "charge" or "sync"? I know all the how to's say yo have it set to charge only but the inly way my computer ever finds my phone is if it us set to sync.
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
I set it to charge. I was finally able to install the correct driver. I selected a Google driver from the list it gave me (which my computer did not like) then went back and updated the drivers with those found in the tools usb folder of SDK. IT FINALLY LET ME!
Now I have a new problem. I'm using the command prompt and trying to create a custom recovery. I set it to the tools directory in SDK (where the flash and recovery images are) and I'm entering the commands exactly like the "how to" instructions have them. I keep getting "adb: not found" errors.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Well, in the long run it is probably a good idea to resolve the driver install problems you are having on your PC, because it is very useful to have "adb" around, even if you are already rooted and have the ROM of your choice installed.
But, if you would like to do this, here's an outline below. Note that the point of the "Live" CDs is that you are not installing Linux on your machine, you are just booting it directly from the CD - the OS and hard drive on your PC are untouched.
1) Download an ".iso" file from your favorite Linux distro [ 3 ] for their "live" CD. (BIG download, usually 600+ MB)
2) Burn the .iso file to a CD as a bootable CD. (Most decent CD/DVD burner programs know what an .ISO file is, but might refer to them as a disk image).
3) Boot your PC off it! (You might need to hit a key on your PC right after you power it on to go into a boot menu, or the BIOS setup to change the boot order so your PC will try to boot from the CD/DVD before it tries the hard drive).
4) Copy the fastboot [ 1 ] executable for Linux and the Amon_RA recovery image [ 2 ] to /tmp "somehow" - you could just download it using the Linux browser if your network come up automatically (wired ethernet), or you could put them onto a USB key beforehand, and plug that in after Linux has booted; it should mount automatically.
5) Then, open up a terminal window and become root. (Type either "su" or "sudo /bin/bash" - depends on the Linux distro)
6) Attach your (well-charged) phone to the phone via USB, and power it up in fastboot mode (Send+End simultaneously)
cd /tmp
chmod 755 fastboot
md5sum recovery.img (check file sig)
./fastboot devices (check to see you are connected)
./fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Obviously, if you need to look something up on the internet, it is useful to be networked, so you can use a web browser. The Linux boot will try to autoconfigure network interfaces automatically, but this is going to be most straightforward with a wired connection (Ethernet). Alternatively, if you have another PC or laptop nearby, you could use that.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I was able to get my drivers installed and run a nandroid recovery. Then I think I bricked my phone:
I just ran a nandroid backup for my Eris which was at stock 2.1 w/ root. I first partitioned the sd to swap - 3072 MB, ext2 swap 3072 MB, and fat32 - remainder. Realizing this was stupid, I went back and changed the partition to swap - 0, ext2 - 512 MB, fat32 - remainder 7680 MB or 7.5 GB. I moved ext2 to ext3 and booted the phone. All my sd was cleared so I copied everything back on (I saved all sd contents to my computer prior to this). I went back to recovery and flashed Eris Lightning 3.02. Everything went successful and when it rebooted, I saw the droid guys, then the "quietly brilliant", then "Verizon" screens. It then began running the "quietly brilliant" and "verizon" screens over and over. I pulled the battery and powered up again but it's still running those two screens over and over. I booted into recovery and attached my phone to the computer. I opened command prompt, entered " sd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools" and then entered "adb devices". It reads "List of devices attached" but there are none. I attempted to add the driver back to my device but when I go to device manager and click "update driver" and point it to the tools directory in SDK, it says that "Windows could not find driver software for your device".
If I can't communicate with my phone via usb and it wont boot, how can I get it to recover?
Any suggestions would help, I'm scratching my head here. I really don't want to have to buy another phone.

First, relax and take a deep breath; everything's going to be fine.
In the recovery main menu, there is an Item called something like "MS-USB toggle" or something like that. It does not use the adb driver, it uses a standard "Mass Storage Device" USB driver already on the PC. The purpose of this function is to make the SD Card mount on the PC when the Amon_RA recovery is running.
Try that - it should work.
Then, download a conservative ROM such as Ivanmmj's Official 1.0 alpha, or Jcase's "Plain Jane", and copy it to your SD card.
After you have done that, make sure to check the MD5 sum of that .zip file on the SD card. (You should be doing this already).
Then, cleanly dismount the USB drive from the PC with the "Safely Remove Hardware" thingamabob, and toggle "off" the MS-USB toggle on the phone. Return to the main menu, wipe /data, and then flash the "conservative" ROM.
Then boot the conservative ROM just to verify everything is OK.
Next, Backup anything from the SD card that you don't already have (this step might be optional), and boot into recovery, and unpartition your SD card so that the only thing that is there is the VFAT partition.
For the moment, I'll give you some advice: f*ck A2SD. You need to gain some familarity with how the various versions of a2sd work before you start using it..
Very likely you were just stuck in a boot loop created by the re-partitioning you performed after initial configuration of a ROM that uses a2sd. Frankly, it is easy to create conditions for this, especially if you switch between ROMs that use different versions of a2sd, and/or don't understand that certain versions are not correctly backed up with Nandroid at the moment (e.g CLB).

Go in to the start menu of your computer or laptop right click on computer and go down to properties and open it up look to the right and you will see something that says advanced system settings click that and it will open up another window for system properties.. Okay look at the bottom of that small window you will see something that says environmental variables, click that. Now you want to scroll through the system variables and find the one that says "path" you want to change that to you ";C:\android-sdk-windows\tools" and save it.. That is where your adb file or app is in your sdk tools folder, so when you open up a command prompt type in adb devices it may say something about killing daemon starting successful.. Don't worry just type it in again you should get your phones serial number thats when you know your good and you can start talking to your phone.. You can try a simple command like adb reboot and it will reboot your phone.. All else fails and you do this and your phone is responding but you can get anything to run in the command prompt type with 1 space cd then another space and then copy and paste "C:\android-sdk-windows\tools" that.. So it will look something like this
cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools.. That should def do the trick.. Or absolute worst case scenario and you want to make it real easy and not have the fun of doing all the hard but fun work just use the "all in one root script" it will root your phone and it will also install "amon RA recoveryv1.6.2"... Hope this helps you out. LoL I know its long but yo dude I went through the same hell and I finally got everything where I want it!!!!!! Also make sure your HBOOT is under 1.49, if you have 1.49 you cant root... For example 1.46 your good...

[Q] Ubuntu doesn't recognize my sdcard

So I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my PC and I'm really digging it. But when I try to mount my sdcard from the phone, it doesn't show up under my places menu. I'm running GSB 1.8.1. I don't have a problem mounting it under windows XP, and also have no problem using the wired tether function. Is there anything I can change on the phone or in Ubuntu to fix this?
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - inside a Virtual Machine - and I can mount the drive from inside the VM. (Believe me, that's even trickier than what you are trying).
But, 10.10 might have had some changes, and I wouldn't be surprised if your result depended on which desktop you are running; so maybe you need to mount the thing manually.
Try this:
With the phone unplugged, type
$ sudo /bin/bash
# tail -f /var/log/messages
This will continue to show you various kernel messages as they appear. Next, plug in the phone.
Hopefully, you will see some lines scroll by that mention USB.
Next, mount the SD to the PC from the phone. If all goes well, you should now see some mention of "SCSI" devices /dev/sdX, where X is probably "a", "b" "c" "d". Probably you will also see mention of the first partition on the device, such as "/dev/sdb1". Make a note of this drive device name.
Cancel the "tail" command (Ctrl-C) and do a
# mount | grep sdb1
( note device name "sdb1" ; use whatever you saw previously )
This will show you if the device is already mounted somewhere.
If the device has not been mounted, you can manually mount it, as in:
# mkdir -p /mnt/Eris_SD
# mount -o rw /dev/sdb1 /mnt/Eris_SD
( Again, note device name "sdb1" - use whatever you saw previously. If it doesn't recognize the file system, use "mount -o rw -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt/Eris_SD" )
Hopefully that will do it. Don't forget to "umount /mnt/Eris_SD" when you are done.
If the device never shows up in the /var/log/messages file, then you have some other problems.
If you don't see anything in the log file indicating USB activity, well - you ought to investigate what is going on at the USB port.
Right now my phone is booted into Amon_RA; if I issue the "lsusb" command, I see:
Code:
Bus 001 Device 031: ID 0bb4:0c98 High Tech Computer Corp.
BTW, on my VM, it seems like I need to unplug the USB cable after I dismount the drive, or the next time I export the SD card to the PC, the kernel recognizes it, but the automounter doesn't automatically mount it.
Another thing that you might try to make things more automatic is the instructions in "Step #5" of this XDA post. This is meant for allowing an unprivileged user on your Ubuntu box to use ADB or fastboot without needing to "sudo" to root. I did this on my VM - I don't think that's the reason that the phone automounts into the SD drive, but perhaps it is related - the same "Vendor_ID" is in use when the phone is in "Composite ADB mode".
When you get to the part in these instructions about restarting the "udev" subsystem, unplug your USB cable first - and then see what you get when you plug it in and fire up the SD export from the phone.
hope that helps.

I noticed this on my desktop with a full install of Ubuntu. I knew it was connected because the charge led was lit, but I would have to unplug the usb and plug it back in almost every time just to get it to mount or connect to the internet with wired tether. I never messed with it BUT it did seem to fix itself once I started doing the system updates on Ubuntu.

When I got to this step, the log didn't show anything when I mounted the sdcard from the phone. On a whim I tried rebooting the phone into the recovery (AmonRA 1.6.2) and then the log showed it as /sdc. If I turn on USB Mass Storage from the recovery, Ubuntu recognizes it then. On a side note, I'd been having trouble getting ADB to recognize my phone until I did this. But shouldn't this also work with the phone fully booted? Maybe it's GSB?
EDIT: I flashed the Stock Sense 2.1 rom to see if everything worked and it did. I rerooted and restored a backup I made this morning to GSB, and Ubuntu recognizes my sdcard when I mount it, and ADB now works. Thanks for your help.

In case this helps, GSB mounts the SD card through USB just fine with Windows. Don't take my comment as a Windows versus Ubuntu, thing, however. Just for whatever it's worth.

Great news! I don't know how I missed your edit since I quoted it in my last response. I must've had this thread open in my browser from before, and went to respond to it after your edit.
OK, so I went back to GSB and had the problem again. I found out that ADB works and the sdcard mounts until I turn on wired tether, then if I turn wired tethering off, my sdcard still won't mount, nor will ADB recognize my phone, until I reboot the phone. Every time I've tried to mount the sdcard, I've made sure to turn tethering off. But it seems like tethering is what kills it.

Are you using the tethering abilities built into CM7 (for wired you have to use the Tether Widget from the market, but that's it), or are you using the "for root" apps? IMHO, the "for root" apps are redundant and don't work as well as the native tethering in CM6 and CM7.

Really? Because I have never been able to get "native" tethering to work. They appear to be working but there not allowing data to pass through.
Also I only use the ones posted on Google's source page.
I believe there may be an issue here that isn't faulted by the phone or the tethering apps. I think it has something to do with the way Ubuntu reacts to the change between allowing data inbound and when it goes back to remounting the phone and its SD card. Honestly if you can I would say allow your Ubuntu to do its system updates then see what happens.
@ roirraW "edor" ehT, no harm intended at the top of my post. Just my personal observation of how these things generally work out for me. Heh.

Just curious, did you have the opportunity to try the native tethering under Froyo/CM6 as well, or did you only try it under CM7? I haven't needed the tethering since before I started to try CM7, so I actually don't know from personal experience if Cyanogen has made the tethering work correctly under it yet. I didn't have any trouble with it under CM6, besides the usual occasional semi-random tethering failures.
My ubuntu 10.10 install handles native tethering just fine. However, that stupid bug where the Eris loses data connection randomly. while natively tethered kicks in.
The only solution I've found is to use AziLink (seems to solve the random disconnect as well as pdanet does.)

Thanks, I'll keep them both in mind. I tried PDANet a long time ago and it didn't keep the tethering from failing, but maybe they improved it.

[Q] Nook device won't show up in adb?

Currently I'm trying this guide:
Nook Tablet "One Click Root" + gapps ADB script
but I've been trying various guides all day. The drivers are there, debugging enabled, auto mount disabled, robot in the bottom corner but when I run ADB Devices, no dice. Anyone have any clues what the problem could be or atleast anyone else having this problem? At first I thought it might be because I was using a different USB cord but it still doesn't work even with the Nook cord
The problem you describe is almost guaranteed to be a problem on your computer and the driver installation.
For the folks here to help, they will need to know platform (PC or mac) and version of operating system.
If Windows, they will need to know how the device appears to Device manager. If it shows up as a disk drive - you will have to disconnect from the Nook side. ADB Composite should be good.
For either platform, confirm that adb_usb.ini is in the right place and modified correctly.
No, you're wrong dude above me.
OP: Run this in cmd prompt
Code:
echo 0x2080 > %username%\.android\adb_usb.ini
You need to have your nook tablet unplugged when you run that then you would see nook tablet in the device manager when you plug it back in.

"Cannot find the path specified." But I can locate the file myself in that directory??
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, device shows up as android phone>androud ADB interface.
My bad it's
Code:
echo 0x2080 > "%USERPROFILE%\.Android\adb_usb.ini
Check, still nothing in ADB, i did restart the server too. To be clear, the .ini file only has the "0x2080" line in it now, nothing else. I'm assuming that's ok because the other stuff was commented out anyway, am I right?
(thanks for your help! )
1) look in device manager now though, you need to install the drivers.
I still see it listed under android phone > android ADB interface and not mass storage or anything like that, you think that's still the problem though?
*Edit*
SUCCESS!! I uninstalled the "Android ADB Interface" and "Android Composite ADB Interface" appeared in its place!!(??) Whatever happened the device show up now. Thanks for the help and keep up the good work Indirect!

I was having problems seeing the Nook Tablet in adb devices, but this fixed it for me.
I was having the same issue for a bit, restarted my nook and it worked haha.

This worked for me. Hopefully it helps.
While the nook is plugged in (mine showed the 2 "Disk Drives" and 2 Drive Letters under portable devices). Open Device Manager and delete/remove the 2 disk drives called "B&N NOOK Tablet USB Device" (this should also remove the weird drive letters under portable devices). Now go to Control Panel > Advanced System Settings > Hardware Tab > then click "Device Installation Settings". Change this setting to "No, let me choose what to do", and make sure "Never install driver software from Windows Update" is checked below that.
Now unplug and replug your NT, and you should now see an Android Composite device with the "!" next to it. You should now be able to install the custom drivers described in the other posts.
Essentially it seems windows is trying to "help" you by guessing at the drivers you want to use.
If this doesn't work, you can try to remove ALL android devices using the USBDeview Application that you can find http://www.androidsim.net/2009/08/how-to-1-how-to-install-usb-driver-on.html
I used USBDeview for the removal part just because I had a Kindle fire, HTC device, samsung device, all installed and I think they were fighting a little bit. I now have results from adb devices, and dare I say ROOT!?!?!
Hope this helps some of you!
Good post - Windows Vista especially, and Windows 7 somewhat, really think they know better than the user when it comes to drivers. Especially unsigned drivers in preference to signed ones...
I found that the best way to do this for people with this problem (such as me), is to go in Device Manager, expand the USB Mass Storage Device selection, search for the USB Mass Storage device of your Nook Tablet (easiest way would be to unplug any other external hd, sd card, ... so that there is only one USB Mass Storage device). At this point, right click and update driver and select the folder manually.

Well I am stumped here, seriously. I can't get rid of the above mentioned 2 instances of "B&N NOOK Tablet USB Device" no matter what I do. Auto mount is off on the device and the device installation setting is already set to "No, let me choose what to do." Yet every time I plug the NT in- the computer kindly tells me it's "ready for use" and those two "B&N NOOK Tablet USB Device" listings are back. At this point I'm not sure I'm ever gonna be able to get the device to show up under ADB. The computer just won't seem to let it.
Any advice anyone might on this would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
maybe try what Indirect did here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363652
The website is below what I did to completely disable Windows from installing the Nook drivers every time it is plugged in. I also had the "Never install driver software from Windows Update" checked from Brices21's post but the drivers would still install everytime it is plugged in.
xxxx = http - still a noob, can't post links
yyy = www
xxxx://yyy.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-disable-automatic-driver-installation-in-windows-vista/
I never actually installed the USB drivers that indirect provided, but "adb devices" still detected the NT when plugged in.
This was my whole process to get "adb devices" to detect the NT:
With the NT plugged in and device manager detecting the 2 Nook devices as drives and 2 Nook devices in "other devices" and with automount disabled and USB debugging enabled
I also ran the runmefirst.bat at some point in time previously, so the necessary files were created already
***** Pulled this from the website above******
* Go to Start–>Search type in gpedit.msc
* Click the file to open the Local Group Policy Editor and show Windows who is in control!!
* You want to go here: Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->System->Device Installation. Click on the subfolder Device Installation on the left and on the right side you will see the possible restrictions.
* Right Click on Prevent Installation of Devices not described by other policy settings and edit this option, set it on ENABLED.
*************************************
From here the website says to reboot and set the option back to default. I did not reboot or set the option back.
* Going back into device manager, I uninstalled the drivers for the 2 Nook drive devices.
* Unplugged the NT
* Plugged the NT back in
Then I got the B&N NOOK Tablet USB Device with the broken symbol under "Other devices" in Device Manager
* Open cmd and run "abd devices" from the ntroot directory
The service should start and list the NT device as a bunch of numbers.
* From here you can run NookandZergy.bat to root the NT.
After rooting you can set the options in the gpedit.msc back to defaults.
I also tried installing the Indirect provided drivers as the USB mass storage device. Windows then detected the device as an Android ADB Composite device but "adb devices" from cmd prompt would not detect the NT. I ended up removing all of the drivers and repeating my steps to get "adb devices" to detect it again.
Hope this helps! It may not be the best solution but it was a workaround for me to get the NT rooted.
****Update*****
Just got home and tried to install the drivers and it worked this time. I was able to see the NT with "adb devices"
With the gpedit.msc edit intact, I plugged in the NT and Windows detected 2 broken Nook devices under "other devices" and a mass storage device under USB controllers.
* I uninstalled the driver for the mass storage device
* set the gpedit.msc back to "not configured"
* unplugged NT
* made sure debug mode was set and automount disabled
* plugged NT back in
Device manager showed a Mass Storage device under "Other devices"
* Update drivers for that device with the Indirect usb driver
* ran "adb devices" in cmd prompt and NT is detected.
So if there's anything to take away from my post...hopefully you can use the gpedit.msc to completely disable the autoloading of drivers.
Drivers Fixed!
Rooted! Got past driver issues (Android Composite ADB Interface appeared in Device Manager, adb still couldn't detect Nook). Thanks to all who have worked so many hours on this.
Here's what worked for me (using Windows XP 32 bit):
1. make sure "adb_ini" file contains "0x2080" and is located at "%USERPROFILE%\.android"
2. I had to manually edit my "path=" environment variable to include the above location - both in Control Panel->System->Advanced->Environment Variables and in cmd window.
3. carefully followed instructions on proper installation of drivers for "Android Composite ADB Interface". At this point, cmd window use of adb was able to detect Nook (as well as runmefirst.bat).
4. Continued with root process (i.e. NookandZergy.bat)
Hope this helps anyone still having driver issues.
Never had this issue using the trick mac method.

Best way to get USB host mass storage working?

I am using Neo V official build 4.1.B.0.431 (ICS 4.0.4), rooted, unlocked bootloader (doesn't seem to matter)
I've downloaded the kernel source code, compiled the `usb-storage.ko` module, and placed it on `/system/lib/modules/drivers/usb/storage/`.
I've also changed `/system/etc/vold.fstab`, added this line:
Code:
dev_mount usb /mnt/usbstor auto /devices/platform/msm_hsusb_host.0
Then I restarted the phone.
After that, I typed the commands (using root) in shell:
Code:
mount -o remount,rw /
insmod /system/lib/modules/drivers/usb/storage/usb-storage.ko
cd /mnt
mkdir usbstor
Then I plugged in the OTG cable with a USB Flash Drive.
The storage is successfully mounted (by vold, I think), as I can verify in Root Explorer. I don't have photos so can't verify whether media scanner can detect it.
But in Settings->Storage it didn't appear. Seems that the Settings app don't support. I cannot unmount it using GUI, so when I remove the storage it warns me about that.
Are there any ways to get the Settings app to show my USB storage so that I can unmount via GUI?
Also how to automatically `insmod` and create `/mnt/usbstor` when startup? I won't bother editing ramdisk, but anything under `/system` is fine. I saw a few shell scripts under `/system`, are they fine to use?
Download USB otg from market. It's for both, arc s & neo/ neo v.
Use it with caution it may burn your motherboard....
Sent from my MT11i using xda app-developers app
Fine. I didn't use any piece of compiled binary anywhere else, but I've done the following:
1. insmod and create mountpoint using `/system/etc/pre_hw_config.sh`
2. edited `res/xml/storage_list.xml` in `framework-res.apk`.
Now the USB storage shows up in system storage settings. The name showed "USB storage" though it still shows "mount USB". I can normally use it now.
It seems to be better than using 3rd-party applications.

Hi Alvin,
I´m having big issues with enabling USB Host mode as well (phone does not find any usb devices such as usb mouse or a pendrive), so I would greatly appreciate your help in finding the root of this problem. Here are the details and what I tried so far:
1. Im running on a rooted GT-i8530, leaked 4.1.2 rom with busybox installed
2. android.hardware.usb.host.xml permissions xml file exists in etc/permissions and just mentiones the apache license
3. Running USB host diagnostics I got:
Android API
Claims support yes
classes found yes
device detected no
Rooted API
Claims support N/A
Device detected N/A
Kernel
Claims support Yes
Device detected No
Verdict OS support No
3rd party apps No
4. I tried 3 different USB cables (original samsung one with female to female connector), another original micro usb to female plug, and a no name one,
5. No mouse nor usb sticks (fat32) seem to be recognized (below 200 ma)
6. Had a look into the storage folder and I can see a folder for external sd, sdcard and UsbA-UsbF. These Usb folders have no permissions set ( like rwx). Looking into the mnt folder I can see the same but in there the Usb folders have rwx permissions set.
7. I was thinking to manually mount the pendrive but when type into terminal as su: ls /dev/block there are no devices (like sda, sdb, sdc) or partitions ( sda1...) mentioned. So I didnt even try commands such as mount -t vfat /dev/block/sda1 /mnt/sdcard/usb...Only mmccblk, loop, dm, ram, vold, param is mentioned on dev/block
8. In vold.fstab all usb(a-f) folders including paths are visible
Now I read your post regarding the usb-storage.ko module and I guess thats whats missing for the phone in order to recognize any usb devices. Reason why I think that is because once I connect a usb device I cant even see any sda´s or sda1´s...In system/lib/modules the folder driver is non existent but I found in sys/module/usb_storage/drivers a usb-storage file but its not a .ko What do you think? I would appreciate your thoughts on that one..

[Q] Rooted P7510 - Not being recognized by PC

Hey there,
Here is a list of what I have before I get started.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wifi (P7510)
Android Version - 3.2
Kernel Version - [email protected]#1
Build Number - INFAMOUS TAB 0.1 P7510UEKMM
Basically I have no access to my tablets internal SD card via my PC (Windows 7 and KIES)
I bought this tablet from a friend who rooted and flashed with the INFAMOUS mod.
I have searched all over the web for an answer and cant find something for this case specifically.
Each time I plug in my tab, my PC tells me that the Hardware ID is missing.
I can see the tablet in my Devices and Printers (displayed as SAMSUNG_android) as well as in my Device Manager. In device manager it says the drivers are up to date and functioning.
What have I tried?
USB Debugging (On and Off)
Clearing cache via recovery mode
Updating drivers via W7 and KIES via Samsung
I have tried following a few threads on installing the KIES software without internet connectivity. However I would rather not use the KIES Software anyway as it is kind of garbage.
I am looking to have access to the internal SD card so I can flash a new Rom on the Tab, however I would first like to even just have access to the file transferring.
Can anyone point me in the direction of help and me being able to enjoy this tablet?
I hope I have provided enough information. I am a pretty techy person and I understand how to do all of this but it seems like I am missing something really big.
Something to take note of, whenever the tab is plugged in (PC or Wall) there is a red x over the battery symbol and the tab charges very slowly.
Cheers
B

The Galaxy Tab doesn't expose the internal "sdcard" as a device that you can mount on your PC. If you enable it, it shows up as a MTD device.
The sdcard partition is formatted using a Linux native filesystem, not FAT, so Windows can't recognize it.
I use adb to push files onto the sdcard. ADB comes with the android SDK.

As stated, make sure you have your tablet in MTP, and if so, make sure to update your drivers.
Settings > Storage > Additional Settings (top right) > MTP
To build on the above, if you have uninstalled Kies but also the Samsung USB drivers, you will be unable to connect the tab. Reinstall (or maybe uninstall and reinstall if you still have them) the drivers. A lot of the times that is the issue.
Go to Settings>Storage>Options/Info (The one on the upper right)>MTP(Check this one)
hope this help

Ahhh ha! As soon as I uninstalled the driver that windows found and used the Google Driver that came along with the Android SDK, the tablet was recognized. Alas, I can finally use this tablet.
In the end it was as simple as a driver error, I spent a very long time searching last night and now I just feel silly.
The tablet still shows the red X over the battery symbol, whether I have MTP with USB Debugging on or off. I guess this can be avoided with certain ROMS. Anybody know of a ROM that avoids this?
Thank you all for your immediate responses!

By the way you two, there is no option in 3.2 for this.
In 3.2 its Applications/Development/USB Debugging
In storage there is no option to choose MTP, it seems that it always has been enabled and I cant find it anywhere in the settings to change it.
Thanks for the input though

For honeycomb and many others, debugging is always there. Under the storage option, you have an Additional Settings button usually and it should be present in there. I was always running3.2 until like a couple days ago so surprised its not there. Oh well problem solved lol
I'm having a similar problem with my tab not being recognised by my pc (win7 64) or in kies. It was originally an M380W (Korean) model, which I updated to a P7510. That all went fine, and the tablet works perfectly, except for the fact that my pc no longer sees it when it's plugged in. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, but no dice. I'm going to see if adb works.
