People shouldn't be scared. Thats why these forums are here. There will always be internet assassins but people shouldn't be afraid of them. There are no stupid questions just stupid people.. Good service you will be doing though

That's very cool of you. Though, most questions can be answered with a simple search on the forums.

People would save themselves a lot of flaming if they would search before they ask, but yeah, that's cool of you to do.

Unfortunately the search function on XDA isn't the easiest to use nor very helpful. I think it's cool though thejondude is offering his help.
At least through the app, the search is way too general and overall pretty crappy. Its frustrating to use for a new user like myself.

I have had my TB for a week now... Can you please tell me how to turn it on and make a call? I have tried pressing on the screen hard and holding it that way for 10 seconds but it still doesn’t turn on. I would call Verizon for help but I can’t because my phone won’t turn on....
Thanks!
P.S. after I get it on can you tell me how to locate fried chicken restaurants near me using the GPS?
Thanks again!

Thank you for this thread! I am rooted and have tried several roms and radios. My question is this: Is the check for updates function in phone settings a reliable way to determine if your phone is capable of receiving OTA updates? I noticed when I was on a leaked radio it would tell me that the update service was unavailable and to check back. When I returned to the stock radio it said there were no updates available. Tia!
P.S. I am currently on the stock rom and radio. I am aware that any official OTA updates may wipe my root and my ability to reroot.

In the past, if you did not have all of the bloatware, etc. that came on the phone (i.e. if you were not completely stock) you would have issues getting the OTA. Since you are back to stock, you should not have any issues, but I wouldn't necessarily say that "check for updates" is the best way to determine that. If you are completely stock, you will get the OTA, but I wouldn't say that check for updates is all that reliable if you have changed something.

I am completely stock with the exception of root at the moment. Just curious if I will be able to deny OTA updates or they will automatically update my phone. With the OG Droid I was asked if I wanted to update or not. I don't want to lose root with no going back. Thanks.
I would assume so (that you can deny). I jumped on the Droid train a bit later but have always been asked (when I was all stock) to update.

I have a small echo-like noise now that I hear during phone calls on my phone. I think it is a hardware issue because I don't hear it on my bluetooth headset. I called Verizon 800 number the other night because I was wondering about the 4G outage and mentioned my audio problem while I was on the phone with her. She said if I call back from another phone, tech support would connect to my Thunderbolt and troubleshoot the audio problem, and if its unfixable they would send me another Thunderbolt.
I am wondering if I need to unroot before I do this....would tech support be able to tell if my phone was rooted and thus void the warranty and not be able to do anything for me? What should I do?
Bare minimum I'd install the stock rom on there, I don't believe they would dig far enough to see if fastboot is unlocked.
As for the title question Yes, they can tell if rooted.
I don't think they can tell Cuz I called yesterday Cuz my screen is messing up they called me back on another line and wanted me to do a factory reset but didn't know that I was already on GB

The only thing I can think of, and I'm no expert or anything so this is just a guess, is that they could look at the software version of the phone, and if it isn't the latest, or a previous release for this phone, then they could speculate that you are rooted, though I don't think that alone would hold up in court if it ever came to that.
When the support rep told the OP that they would "connect to my Thunderbolt and troubleshoot the audio problem", I think they were going by the standard "don't call tech support from the phone that's having the issue" practice.
Can they remotely connect to our phones ? I wasn't aware that they could.

Correct, that's what they said ("don't call tech support from the phone that's having the issue" practice.)
So should I still unroot to be safe before I call them or no....
What ROM are you using ?

If you want to be on the safe side, make a nand backup, flash a stock ROM, call them, then restore the backup. I'll pretty sure they can't tell if you have a custom recovery.

Don't know how they do it, (simple user here) and not the first time I've seen this asked or answered. If you're bored jump on every TB forum your on and I'm sure you'll find your curiosity satisfied. Maybe it was on BAMF? I could care less how they do it. (No ins here) Call technical support and ask them what rom your on and how dare they know that.

Liquid AOSP 3.2.
I unrooted just to be safe and the tech rep never said anything and I got them to send me a new sim card and if that doesn't solve my problem (which I don't think it will), then they will send me a new thunderbolt.
When I rooted again after the phone call it wouldn't let me restore my rom and I got stuck in a boot loop. Luckily I had rom zip's on my sd card, so I installed one from scratch, reflashed cwm via rom mgr again, then it let me restore it.
Very weird, and I was terrified I jacked my phone up.

Hmm keep looking, I won't be at a pc till tomorrow maybe. But like I said I have no way to confirm only what I've read which is what I do. And that was second hand information. As most of this is. I'm really trying to remember because I know these site searching's are lacking at best.
I just recently used to work for at&t customer care and if vzw is anything like them, the only way they can maybe tell is if you have an unlimited data plan plus unofficial tethering app. Or if you send it in for warranty/Asurion replacement. Otherwise i don't really see how they could see in any way if it was rooted

That is understandable, thank you. Still gotta get to my pc. I know people have called in on their rooted devices for certain reasons and been called out only to deny. And of course unroot before going in. For whatever reason. Sticking to it.
That's why I asked what ROM. A support rep could simply tell the person to read them a version # that will be different than "stock".

Could be a root patch. Avoid it like a plague. If you take it and lose root, you're on your own.

Either a mistake, or funky timing. That is unless Samsung and VZW have banded together to lock this device down with extreme prejudice. Seems too fast of a reaction time for that. All of their people were off when root happened- Unless they have a weekend warrior strike force!
I really doubt this is to patch root, but i am for sure not going to be the one to find out Thats way to fast of an update to just patch a root exploit, i wonder what the update is really for
Both of the known exploits are well known to Samsung and have been known about since before ME7 was released. You're making it sound like they put this update out in reaction to the program that was just recently put out to take advantage of one of the known exploits. Do we even know for sure there is an update? Is it confirmed by more than one person? What version is it?

Weekend warrior strike force. Lol but seriously they a can work from home you know. They can call people in. That's what they get paid for. Its in their job description.
As soon as Dan or whoever spoke about the 2 exploits that were working but tried to keep it secret from the masses Verizon and Samsung were hard at work on this. They are smarter than anyone here. And that is in no way a jab at anyone here. They are where they are for a reason.

I hate to ask this, but, I am curious as to the status of the VRUAME7 bootloader unlocking. I haven't seen any status updates since the bounty thread was closed. I'm aware root has been achieved, but seeing as I just got my S4, I'd like to experiment with different roms a bit.
Thanks.

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. If anyone has any information about this that would be awesome!

Hi im new to the forums and pretty knew to modding phones, but i was wondering the status of this as well? and when any of the developers here on the forum think that maybe the bootloader will be unlocked? A family member passed away so i kinda of inherited the phone and i want to use it since its newer and better than mine but they had updated it to ME7 so im stuck now i guess until they can crack it Also i wanted to ask if since that might take a while, if its possible to like reset the phone to factory settings and would it put it back to MDK maybe? or is there a way to like flash it back to MDK or something so i would be able to root/unlock the bootloader then? If not its fine i guess ill have to wait. But i had cynogen on my old phone (the original droid lolz) and it was awesome so i was hoping i could put that on the S4 as well and get rid of all this crap bloatware on it too. Well thanks a lot for all your work nice to be part of the community now, so i hope they keep working on this and keep us updated ^_^

The best we can hope for out of future updates is that they have a vulnerability that's easier to find than whatever's still waiting to be discovered in ME7 (if any such vulnerability is hiding there).

Yes and you do realize me winning the Powerball 25 consecutive weeks is more likely?
I believe in the devs here, many are working on it and too much time has passed w/o results, I believe if some exploit were possible it would have been found by now.
Sorry to be pessimistic but I think Samsung got it locked permanently and forever and, sorry to say it, but this probably means all future devices will arrive permanently locked down. :crying:
I'd sure love to be wrong about this.....

the motos got unlocked over 6 months after release, and that was considered by many to be completely impossible. Seeing this phone is more popular I think the chances are better, just will take time!
I put in an RMA with Negri electronics, and they're going to exchange mine for an MDK phone. Really should have done my research before updating...
I have the most basic knowledge of rooting and have only done it on an Eris which had a 1-click method.
My i-717 came rooted.
I have now managed to temporarily bootloop my Note twice through Android Tuner Free so I promise once I fix this I'm deleting it.
Long story short waiting at the court house for 5 hours, began mindlessly clicking around the settings I (thought) I understood.
Now neither wifi nor data will connect to the internet longer than a couple minutes, usually at startup.
No idea how I did this and my assumptiom that there was a nandroid image was incorrect (I've made one now though).
I know I'm an idiot, please don't shame me
