Hey all,
I had a quick question about the reset function on the phone.
I'm having problems with a few apps just crashing outright and not working. I figured I'd just like to start from scratch but I don't want to have to root again if I can avoid it...
Plan of action so far is use HTC's own factory default reset, install HD Revolution 41 (Kit Kat) and then restore app data from Titanium Backup.
Is there a way to do all of this without having to reroot the device?
Flashing custom roms never requires root, they come rooted. Read the stickies

Thanks for the reply... I never said however that they do require rooting. I'm saying that my device is already rooted and would like to reset without unrooting...
It wouldn't matter. Custom roms come rooted.

I'm pretty sure it's not possible but is there any way I can back up all of my data, settings, apps, homescreens, etc while still unrooted and s-on? I've just put hundreds of hours getting everything just right and I don't want to lose it all. I know how to backup the basics but what's the most I can do? My phone is acting up and I thing I need to do a factory reset and/or get a new phone. Thanks for your time.

Not really possible but you can try my backup. It's in the market. It might save some of your data

Here's another vote for My Backup Pro: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro
Since you're not rooted, I'm not sure how much of your data it can backup / restore, but I think it can backup app data without root... I could be wrong. Nevertheless, it's a great backup app. Worth the price, but there are free versions as well.
However, I don't believe root is required in order to do a "nand" backup. What you need to do is:
Unlock your bootloader, per HTC.
Flash a custom recovery, like AR Recovery 3.15
You can follow steps 1 and 2 of Scotty's instructions here: http://androidforums.com/rezound-al...ys-noob-friendly-root-guide-start-finish.html
The caveat is that unlocking wipes your device, so... I don't know how you would get a nand backup of your device as it is right now. However, moving forward, you would be able to create nand backups, and you would not have to be rooted.
At the same time, once you unlock your bootloader and flash AR Recovery, it's incredibly simple to flash superSU and achieve root. So why not, if you're going through the trouble of unlocking so you can create a nand backup? Just sayin'...
Understand, too, that the two steps above are reversible. You can flash the stock recovery back, and you can re-lock your bootloader. If you're concerned about your warranty...
If you don't wish to go through any of these steps, then I believe My Backup Pro is going to be your best option. Some people also use Titanium Backup, but I don't find that app to be nearly as user friendly.
Thanks for the input...I've got some decisions to make.

You can do an ADB backup and get all apps and data without ANY mods. My lady has the rezound and is very disappointed with the ics ota update so I pulled all the data before I unlock. Its a new feature with the ics system. Just be sure to set a backup password in the developers section of the settings.

Is there a root method where I don't have to put a image that has already been rooted onto my phone? I'm on stock and haven't messed with the phone yet and I did a lot of customizing on the phone and it took time to set things up the way I like it.

No there isn't if you are on the LL4 firmware. But you do know it doesn't wipe your data right?

Oh so all the apps I've downloaded and all of the modifications will stay including the setup of my e-mail etc.?
yes thats correct.
So I downloaded VooDoo Root Keeper and backed up my root. Downloaded the OTA update and let it install. Once the phone rebooted I didn't have root, but I went into VooDoo Root Keeper and clicked Restore root. And Root Checker now report I have ROOT once again...
You have to reboot after restoreing root to get apps to work that require root.
And?

Lucky, i installed with nothing to backup root.
Even after installing complete stock, then updating it failed... I don't think this update likes my phone very much.
If I remember reading this correctly you have no problem getting root, it's just that you lose access to custom recoveries.. So therefore kind of pointless to update since you can't run custom roms

From what I read you will lose root with the OTA and not be able to re-root with the current known method. Am I wrong?

I agree the future custom roms will have the parts of the update we want and not the major part we don't. I'll never give up my custom recovery!!
Well I haven't ran any custom roms on this yet... But this is still helpful ad I do run AdAway, Faceniff and WifiKill... which all require Root .

root without recovery is better than no root...
Not to be a party pooper, but why is this in the development section?

It seems to have worked!
Following this process I was able to keep my root, have not tried using recovery though.
Use OTA RootKeeper to protect root, take OTA update, restore root using RootKeeper, update binaries using SuperSU. Existing apps that use root still work as expected!
Glad it worked for you too.
Has anyone else achieved this? I'm tempted to do it but obviously concerned as I do not want to lose root. I'm sure not every phone is the same.
Also, does anyone know if the OTA will work if you have frozen apps ( including frozen bloatware)?
sorry for the noob question, I got my 1st android device a couple weeks ago and I'm trying to get up to speed quickly.
I see some people saying they want to unroot to take the VRUAME7 update... and I see others saying they took the update which caused them to loose root privileges. So I'm still trying to determine if I need to (or should) unroot to take the update.
I have the stock ROM, so can I just take the update without unrooting first? If the update succeeds, what are the drawbacks of not unrooting prior to the update?
Note: I do plan to unroot first. this question is mostly just for my understanding.
If you unroot prior to the me7 update you will not be able to get it back. If you keep root with voodoo through the ota you lose custom recovery/ability to rom.

Hi all,
I changed my HTC One to international following a guide on this forum. Now I'm stock and my device received the 4.2.2 OTA.
I want to keep my phone stock to receive updates, but I need to restore my titanium backup. So I'll need root and I know how to do that: install a recovery then supersu.
The thing is after the restore I want to revert root and remove the custom recovery. I read that I'll need to replace twrp with a stock recovery buy since my device is on 4.2.2 I don't know what file to flash.
Any help will be appreciated.

Theres no way to do what you want as far as I know because after you're done re locking the bootloader it wipes the sd card and all data anyway so your best bet is to use HTC backup.

Hey guys..
Still new to all this and I've come across some terminology that's a little different that what I'm accustomed to. I want to know how to create a backup image of the phone similar to when you create one of a PC that you can use to restore to a particular state, apps, system settings and all.
From what I've read this is called a nandroid backup. Does this require a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP or can it be done without it? I know that flashing a custom ROM or recovery trips KNOX. But does simply doing a backup trip KNOX as well?
Thanks for your patience and advice

I don't know of any way to create a BU image without rooting. There are several great videos that will show you how within 10 minutes and it really is quite safe. Make sure you choose the root method for your carrier. (Probably Sprint because you are in the Sprint forum). I rooted my Note 3 yesterday and I am very happy. I recommend the video by QBKing77. After you are rooted, you can keep your stock ROM or try one or more of the custom ROMs available right here at XDA. Once you root, there are a number of excellent programs only available to rooted devices. After rooting and installing your recovery (I recommend TWRP but there are alternatives), it is very simple to create a Nandroid BU. It is a complete system image and will take your phone back to the state where it was at the time you created your BU.
I haven't tested this yet but here is a method to root without tripping the counter:

Thank you for the response. I know you can root without tripping knox, but I was wondering if flashing a recovery app like twrp or cwm were the only ways to create a nandroid BU
Thanks again!

I will leave .5% but I am 99.5% sure that you need to flash a recovery in order to do a Nandroid.

That's really the only way, I would suggest using Twrp and not Cwm.. If you want to screw with your phone, just follow qbkings method and you'll be good to go in about ten minutes. It's worth it if you like to screw with stuff.
