I recently got an HTC Evo 4g LTE used and it came with Cyanogenmod 10.1.3. I thought that this would be nice, as I have several friends who use Cyanogenmod. However, I can't activate the phone with my carrier (Ting) unless I have the stock software. I found vipeRUU, and believe that that will restore my phone. However, I just want to make sure that the versions of the software on my phone and vipeRUU match and are compatible so that I don't wreck my phone. What do I need to check on my phone to make sure that vipeRUU will work? I'd be happy to post any info about my phone; I haven't because I'm new at this and don't know what info you need. Also, I have twrp installed if that makes a difference.
Or should I just use DirtyRacun to RUU?
If you are S-off, then VipeRUU will work. There is also a 3.17 RUU that was recently released that you can run if you're S-on. Really, though, all you need to do is flash a Sense ROM and you should be able to accomplish everything you need to.

Just to be clear, it doesn't matter what hboot version I am? Or anything else's version? And out of curiosity, would any version of the RUU work or do I need to use the newest?
Thanks for your help!

Hello all,
I'm a bit new with the Rezound, I was pretty experienced with the DInc2 and DInc before it, but I'm wondering something, I've looked around a bit, so apologies if I missed a thread, but I haven't found a straight up direct answer.
I have the latest ICS leak installed on my phone, I haven't rooted or s-off'd the phone just yet.... so what I need to know is:
1. Do I need to be S-OFF to flash the GB RUU so I can get the OTA when it releases?
OR
2. Will the phone still pick up the OTA with the leaked version of ICS since the leak is still an "official" build etc.
Hello, i'm also looking for same info, only i'm like a super noobie, I have an RUU, INSTALLED the HTC sync, which failed saying "waiting for boot loader" and that's all she wrote. So I think I need to do something to the boot loader, only what i'm not too sure.
Thanks.

Good question, not new to htc, I came from the tbolt, but if I run the latest ruu as a .img file through hboot, how would I get back to the stock gb rom that's currently on my rez, or will I be able to accept the ota while on the leak?
from my knowledge you will be able to ota to the release as long as it is a higher version that what the current leak is.
and if that fails you could s-off then gb ruu and then ota up.
I would like to go back to a nandroid backup of GB ROM that I had before I updated my firmware to the latest ICS leak. I can get it to restore & boot up, but I have no access to my sd card, so I have none of my apps. I feel like I've tried everything - nandroid helper, old firmware fix - but I don't know what to do next. Any suggestions?
In my trials to go back to a ginger bread RUU based firm ware, the process gets stuck at waiting on the boot loader, the phone is apparently not recognized. It is also not seen by the HTC sync.
the boot loader has been locked I don't know what to do next. It doesn't appear I can flash anything from fast boot menu.
Thanks for reading this far.

Hello and thanks for your time looking into this.
I am on ICS Leak - and need to go back to GB - the thing is good but the battery is atrocious and it heats like anything.
So I went ahead and put the thing in boot loader and then ran the RUU after exiting the HTC sync. Now I am getting Error 140 - Boot loader version Error.
Ah the pain this phone is causing
I have one more question: Do I have to do this every time I want to go back to a previous backup (one that I did prior to updating to the ICS firmware)? If so, I'm wondering if it wouldn't just be easier to go back to GB firmware......
Ver Change for Error 140 - Android SDK CMD???
According to my research - I need to down the version using hex editor via ADB Shell. Dear God !
I have tried / installed SDK/ and Java Dev Kit. No Go - is there an app I can do this on the phone itself?
Thanks

You will need s-off to revert but as of hboot 2.25 it doesnt accept flashboot commands. Kinda stuck til a patched hboot gets released if you took the 5/7 leak.

Thanks for looking into this - so my option is to wait for a patched hboot 2.25 or wait for another RUU with an Hboot higher than 2.25.
I was wondering if I could install CWM recovery - and just flash myself an GB ROM. My issues with this ROM are overheating and battery chomping. I wonder if that will be helped with a GB ROM - supposedly more mature and efficient. If this can be done can you point me to a thread?

Then you´re probably s-on.
Did you unlock your bootloader? Do you have root access?
When booting into the bootloader it will say s-on or s-off.
I s-offed my phone yesterday with the same hboot, using the wiretrick here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743466

Used it myself, simply boot up into hboot with that file on your sd card, and accept.
Then it'll restart bootloader and voila, hboot 1.49.0007
The hboot wil also say 'locked' on top.

Damn somebody got hamed on by coal686. By the way homie, hamed is a term in Detroit used to describe somebody that got told off. But on a serious note, this site doesn't need pompous jerks trying to act like they are better by trying to sound intellectually brighter than somebody and having a smart mouth. This site is full of devs and users collaborating together to help one another. So there's no need to be a ****. I'm not name calling I'm just merely stating facts

Thank all of you guys for all the help! I appreciate it. I have another question. I flashed the 3d to metro pcs. If i flash another rom will it delete the flash? and i downloaded apn backup but it says that ics doesnt let it back up or restore anything...
No it shouldn't. And are you flashing a aosp or sense Rom? Either one ics won't allow third party apps to write to the apn xml file. But here are a couple solutions. On sense you can download msl reader and get your msl code. Once you get that code go into your dialer dial ##3242# and punch in your code under edit. Once you do that click on advanced, go to the bottom of page where your mms settings are located. If you know the setrings, edit the settings to your liking. However if its aosp, you will need to make a copy of your apn file. It's located in system/etc folder if you didn't know. Place it in your pc. Use notepad to edit the settings and save it. Copy it back onto your sdcard. Then copy it back into the folder and set the default permissions for the file and reboot. If that don't work try go sms as an alternative until devs fix the issue.

HTC releases the RUU, Sprint releases the OTA files. I know the RUUs used to be posted on HTC's website on each phone's page but I don't know if they do that anymore. Most likely a dev will post it as soon as it gets released.
While we wait, what happened to your phone? Maybe someone here can help.

To flash a custom ROM: You cannot downgrade the hboot yet as you already know, but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to go the more primitive root and use HTC's unlock method, flash TWRP (which has HTC Dumlock workaround for the boot.img) and go from there.
Completely Stock: All other RUUs will fail. You can checkout the stock OTA file here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2045839 You should be able to flash this file from the stock recovery by renaming to update.zip but please check with a developer first since I have not actually tried this myself! To install the stock recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2045935 and choose the 3rd firmware option (it will write ALL new firmware) including hboot, recovery, kernel, etc.)

The RUU we're waiting for is the .exe file that you run in Windows while connecting your phone to your PC. Not a zip.
A friend of mine has given me his phone to fix and it's in a state, i'm at a loss at what to do now.
This problem is:
He tried to flash a new rom (it was rooted, S-ON and Hboot 1.53) he got stuck on a boot loop but the clever sod decided not to do a backup before the flash. He is now in bootloop without a Rom in sight that i can find to flash it.
Every other thread I have looked at has got broken links in so that's why i'm making a new thread for it. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Have you tried re-rooting and s-off, downgrading hboot And all that? (Start a fresh)

I had that same problem before. What i did was flash an RUU exe file. Search for it here. Check for your specific carrier's RUU here. You also need to install htc drivers for the pc to see your phone.
Iv'e downloaded (and installed) both the drivers and the RUU, but every time i go to launch it, it comes up with the phone not found.
any suggestions?
Edit: Iv'e got it to recognize the device but now its saying "The ROM Utility cannot update your Android phone. Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again"
This is the correct utility though?

Yeah, it's for the Vodafone carrier so i downloaded the corresponding RUU, i also made sure its the "ShooterU" one too, i'm at a loss again haha.
with your hboot you'll need an ICS RUU. unfortunately there isnt one for vodafone. your best bet would be to flash 4EXT recovery, turn on smartflash and then install a rom that can boot on 1.53 hboot (I'd recommend Yoda ICS as its known to boot on 1.53 s-on)
yeah.. as I said from previous post if youre having a hard time with Ruu exes. flash a sense 3.6 rom or Gb rom. it should work.
Hello everyone,
I am currently running this version rooted with S-On. I have been trying a long time to get S-off to work on my device, but I cannot find the proper method. If someone can direct me to which s-off method works with 3.17.651 and hoot 2.09, that would be great!. Thanks for your help.
The only one that would work for me was moonshine. Have you tried that yet?

I am on 3.17.651 and I was not able to successfully S-OFF with Moonshine.
I forgot I was on 3.16. You could always go back to 3.16 s-off and then flash 3.17. A lot of stuff to do though.

If you have unlocked your bootloader and have a custom recovery installed, flash this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2127947&highlight=3+16+651+3, then use moonshine to s-off, then flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2468418.
Restarting
When i try to flash the first .zip file it goes half way then the phone restarts and gets stuck on the splash screen am i supposed to use deodexed or odexed?

You have to flash the kernel separately from the ROM.

You don't have to be S-off to run CyanogenMod. You need to extract the boot.img from the ROM and flash it via fastboot commands in the bootloader. Then you can flash the ROM itself from recovery. I explain this pretty clearly in my guide.

ok so i use the 3.16 rooted zip file extract it and copy the boot.img to my desktop. then flash that through command prompt then flash the zip file itself? what command so i run to flash the boot.img?
I'm still getting the same issue. the rom zip doesnt finish flashing and reboots and gets stuck on splash screen.

Have you tried DirtyRacun (along with the BabyRacun process)? That might be your only bet.

I tried to do this (same boat with 3.17) and BabyRacun won't run because the version is above 3.16 and it DirtyRacun errors because of a version mismatch
