For sure? No you can't. The only way you can use a custom Rom is by installing Safestrap. Which means all you can run are TW based Roms. Furthermore, since your on MK2, all you can run are 4.3 TW Roms. As of now, I think there's only one Rom compatible with 4.3 and Safestrap.
Sorry.
safestrap and hyperdrive 12 is all you can run.....but its a great rom.i have been using it for a week and love it.but i do wish i could run cm11

Now that the Nexus 5 is officially announced and GPE devices should probably see the update soon, what is the chance that we will see 4.4 stock for ME7 users? I know that stock 4.3 won't work with safestrap, but does this mean that 4.4 stock won't? It might be to early to ask this question since I do not think anyone has been able to look at 4.4 source code yet.

This belongs in Q&A, but I'll answer.
No, 4.4 AOSP or GE will not work for SafeStrap until a workaround is found to allow non-TouchWiz Kernels. 4.4 TouchWiz would likely work when released, though.

I came from a Droid 3 which in order to root you had to use SafeStrap. We did have an unofficial CM port for the device, but we had safestrap which would have stopped any other kernal but Motorola's from being installed. Is the difference here is that the Droid 3 has Kexec? I thought Kexec was built into safestrap, or am I wrong? Is there the possibility for Kexec with ME7 GS4 or no?

Sweet! Can't wait!
I'm running an i545 S4, rooted, hotspot tether, 4.3, MJ7. I ultimately want to be running MK2 4.4 kit kat, rooted, with wifi hotspot. What if anything can I do at this time to get my phone best setup to be ready to take advantage of new releases and who would be the most likely builders. I been read about some stuff cyanogenmod is doing and I like the Toro eclipse rom stuff (inverted) as well. Should I focus on trying to get MK2 build first?
Thanks for your help in advance cuz you guys always come thru!

There is really no telling man at this point. A lot of people are already running CM 4.4 Kitkat but for that you must be on MDK. Your best bet would be for Samsung to release a 4.4 TW build at some point and wait for someone to post build.

Is it the first version S4 shipped with and at this point there is no way to downgrade to it.
This should be in Q&A

Yeah, to add to what the other poster said, it's the first version that the S4 came out with, and it was easy to hack by using something called Loki, which bypasses the bootloader and lets you change your kernel and run AOSP ROMs.

Search, search....and search. There is a thread asking which roms are available for SS that I'm sure is no more than 2 pages away. Your options are limited, and IMHO it doesn't get better than hyperdrive at the moment. The only others are backups you restore.
I have been searching and havnt come up with much im trying to see whats closest to CM11 or AOSP 4.4

Hopefully the s4 will be unlocked (again) soon. Some promising work being done by surge and jeboo.
Look for omega rom in verizon s4 general and foxhound in verizon s4 development (both backups). Only other 2 options I have seen. I think there is a deodexed stock rom too somewhere.

I'm on MDK and I've never tried a non-touchwiz ROM. I want to now. I'd appreciate if you guys could tell me what the most popular / mainstream / well developed AOSP ROM is for the Verizon s4. I think I'd like to start my AOSP journey there.
Also, are the current crop of AOSP ROM fully functional? Or are there still some features of the S4 that aren't supported?
Thanks in advance.

Think I answered you in another thread about this topic but.. Try Mahdi, C ROM , Liquid Smooth, AICP ... They've all treated me well. They'll all run differently though for people so you'll just have to flash away and report back in their threads. Also I highly recommend using KToonsez AOSP-Kit Kat kernel with those. It's been nothing but stable for me.
Good luck!

I thought AICP couldn't be used with Safestrap? I'm about to downgrade from 4.4.2 so I can root my phone but from everything I've seen you have to use safestrap to do so... which would effectively destroy being able to use AICP.

safestrap enabled phones can only use tw stock kernel based roms which exclude CM, ASOP and all the rest

Well you're correct but I was answering the OP who stated he was on an MDK S4.. which in turn means he's not on SafeStrap.

Gotcha.. I'm new to rooting so I'm still trying to learn everything I can sorry about that. Every Verizon S4 I've seen people have used Safestrap on the SCH-I545. So I'm assuming that MDK is merely a different build correct?

Hey no problem!
MDK is the build that the Verizon S4 first shipped with and it allowed for a bootloader exploit called Loki which let's us run custom recoveries... Thus allowing AOSP ROMs like the ones I mentioned.

So does anyone know if the Samsung Galaxy S4 is getting Android 6.0, or am I going to have to root it and flash cyanogenmod 13?

You can not flash Cyanogenmod unless you have a Loki'd bootloader.

I am not asking how. I am asking if I have to. Because I really don't want to root it considering my past experiences with rooting
Verizon (and Samsung, too) would prefer that you help boost their profits by purchasing a new phone.
The S4 would probably run Marshmallow perfectly fine...if Big V put its mind to it. However, by the time they pumped-in all their bloatware and crapware onto the phone, it would run so poorly that you would throw your hands up in exasperation and run out and buy a new phone!

Will anyone make a rom that's flashable for people who don't have mdk? Because looking at some of the screenshots it looks aesthetically way better than lollipop.
Unfortunately you're stuck on lollipop. Even if someone was to try to port a MM TW rom over to the s4 without the firmware or modules to support it it would be pointless.
