CWM custom nandroid recovery - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After installing NeatROM latest version, I want to restored just my data from my nandroild backup. This ROM has Philz CWM Touch. In recovery, I go to Backup and Restore/Custom Backup and Restore/Custom Restore Job. In Custom Restore Job, I select only Data and deselect everything else. At this point, I can't figure out what to do to start the recovery. If I hit the return key, it goes back to the previous menu.

I do not see any option called Advance/Restore. Can you be more specific? I am looking the CWM menus right now. Here is what I see:
Reboot System Now
Install Zip
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Wipe Cache Partition
Backup and Restore
Mounts and Storage
Advanced
Philz Settings
Power Options
Under Backup and Restore, I see:
Backup
Restore
Custom Backup and Restore - the selection in which I described my problem
(and several other options)
Under Advanced, I see:
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Report Error
Key Test
Show Log
Datamedia Not Supported
Partition External sdcard
Partition Internal sdcard
So, I do not find what you are directing me to.

It seems you are using latest philz.
.
Try changing to xwlss philz .
You have a option advance restore in backup/restore

thanks. actually, I finally found what I needed in there. it was hidden at the bottom of a very long touch menu.

[Q] What kind of backup CWM Manager does?

I rooted my phone using CF-root and created a new backup. It prompted me with a file name and it booted to CWM and did a backup.
My question now is, what kind of stuffs did it do a backup?
Firmware?
OS?
App + data as well?
Is it creating a backup of everything or just the firmware/OS? If so I would be glad.
This question might be common to you but I am very new to all this, please advice~
It will backup everything, including boot partition, kernel, your apps and their settings and so on. Modem won't be backed up.

So can I do a wipe and restore my backup? If so what kind of wipe?
You can boot into CWM by pressing and holding Volume UP + Home and Power buttons together while phone is turned off. Before flashing new ROM you should wipe DATA and CACHE partitions, also, wiping Dalvik Cache is highly recommended. See attached pics for CWM.
Thank you very much for your feedback, really appreciate it!

Restore apps to any Rom using CWR Advanced Restore. ¿Anyone use CWR this way b4?

Sometimes we don't realize something is right there until we look more closely into it. So with this.
The CWR advanced restore is better at doing data restore than the alternate "new method" (below).
Update "Advanced restore system from older rom"
Method 1:
The process may work better if you boot to cwr from the older rom where the data is current and advanced restore a newer system as follows: (from could be any rom)
How to merge an update with your Current "PureBlur" ROM so all your data apps remain. Power off to CWR . Backup your current to be safe. Do all the following in the same CWR session: Choose Backup & restore ..... ***CHOOSE THE LAST one>>>Advanced restore. Select the "Update Nandroid" (.....PureBlur.sys.only...) Select restore system. Wipe cache & dalvik. DO NOT WIPE DATA. Flash ReRecoveryDx2.zip. Reboot.
"Advanced restore data from new system rom"
This may not work as well as the above.
Method 2:
Just being on a ROM makes it the "target.nand". Choose Backup & restore....Advanced restore then choose the source.nand that has all your latest apps then Restore data. Wipe cache & dalvic and you are DONE!
All data.img files will have ".recovery_mode" set to 1 - active AND you are not touching system so ReRecovery will not be needed.
Note if you do play with cross-rom merging at best you can be sure to wipe cache & dalvic to ensure booting.
*************************************************************
Older "alpha" method 3:
Work in progress, First (ghetto) edition. BTW Thanks to hedwig34 for leading me in the right direction.
Here is My tested method to merge your latest apps (data) with a new nandroid (system)
Definitions : (use no spaces in a nand' folder name, my nandroid names are not necessary)
TARGET.NAND folder : As I conceived this method, this should be a wiped nandroid which is likely to be an updated version of rom you are running OR the nandroid of any rom you just flashed.
SOURCE.NAND folder : This would be your latest backup with all your apps to merge with the former.
Use Root Explorer (or ES file)
For this exercise make a duplicate of the TARGET.NAND folder.
Though once you practice this the dup is not needed.
(in Root Explorer (use a long press) just copy then paste)
Then copy from the SOURCE.NAND folder and paste into the copy.of.TARGET.NAND folder, the following:
.android_secure.img (if not used leave it as is)
data.img
Use your installed Terminal apk OR:
Install (mkt search - "Terminal IDE") Terminal IDE : http://code.google.com/p/terminal-ide/
Setup the apk install system etc , sd flip/flop -assumed
In terminal IDE (type the following)
su
cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/Copy.of.TARGET.NAND
md5sum *img>nandroid.md5
(Wait for the #)
You can check for a newer date for nandroid.md5 to confirm success.
Restore Copy.of.TARGET.NAND from cwr then be sure and wipe cache & dalvik. This should be good but BSR might be missing (depending on how you are using this) so Flash ReRecovery.xx.zip before you reboot system.
RR will also give you leeway to go wild and use this to restore data across different roms on YOUR sdcard- you will have bootstrap there to save you if the rom-nand' bombs!
Note if you do play with cross-rom merging at best you can be sure to wipe cache & dalvic to ensure booting and flash RR as a safety.

Edit op now readable.
This is interesting. I love fiddling.

Op updated with how to use our CWR Advanced Restore to accomplish the same thing
I gave someone these instruxtions(via link) and they successfully restored an app they had problems with...
Cyanogenmod
On my next new rom flash (if we ever get one) I'm going to forsake TB & market and during my 1st cwr session after I BU the Rom, I will select which nandroid BU has the apps I want and restore them with advanced restore.
The process may work better if you boot to cwr from the older rom where the data is current and advanced restore a newer system as follows: (from could be any rom)
How to merge an update with your Current "PureBlur" ROM so all your data apps remain. Power off to CWR . Backup your current to be safe. [Q] Is my nandroid restore not working or am I doing something wrong?

Ok I made a nandroid backup on my s2 Gti9100 a few days ago
I then tried to do a titanium backup and my s2 rebooted, I then recieved fcs from a load of apps constatly making it impossible to do anything. I was barely able to turn off, i had to keep taping ok untill i got to power off window.
Then I booted into cwm, wiped cache partition and dalvic and did nandroid restore, i then booted up, no fcs, but all my apps on sd came up in my app drawer and home screen with that grey android icon saying this app is not installed on your phone!
went to recovery again wiped cache and dalvic and data/factory reset
then restored system and data and still had the same problem!
what do i do
please help
p.s. i have not partitioned anything for use in apps like link2sd, no ex whatever
are you doing restore from Advance restore, as you mentioned " then restored system and data....." or from the main restore menu?
Did not you use the Titanium backup for your applications?
Do Not restore System Data is the usual answer to this problem .

Yes of cosrse, if he is doing his restore from Titanium back up,
but OP's concern is about his Nandroid backup, which is a photocopy of his earlier ROM, NO option to avoid system Data restore unles he goes into the advance restore of CWM....

yes i am using advanced restore
and it was titanium backup that caused my problem in the first place, while i was trying to backup
all my settings are stil here aswell as the apps in internal. I think only the apps moved to sd are messed up
could it be a problem with .androidsecure? should i delete this and let nandroid replace it after restore, or does nandroid even backup that?

I dont mind what method you think of aslong as I can get back to that point
would it be a good idea to extract app backups out of nandroid using titanium, just an idea, i just saw it in its options
if its complicated please explain as im not a phone expert
it is not complicated but a good idea if you have Titanium backup pro (donated version), otherwise you cant...when you selct that option you will automaticaly get prompted the list of applications to install....
By the way why are you selecting advance option for restoring....?
do like this, wipe cache, wipe data fatory reset, and in advance wipe dalvik cache,
go back to Backup and restore select restore at main menu (no advance restore) and select your backup and restore....finish all your stuffs are back....

hmmm, that is why you are not getting your apps back when you do nandroid restore...
your backup was not done smoothly, only your system data backed up well not user apps...bad luck
so ive lost it all?
Should i delete .androidsecure, is it just junk files now?
great news!!! turns out all my personal data was kept, I just reinstalled everything and it wae back to normal
p.s. i think the cause of nandroid backup fail was lack of space on my phone, how can i backup to external sd?
If you use the CWM app you can choose between internal/external SD for the location of the backup.

CWM recovery backup and restore = Nandroid backup
Clockworkmod is a 'custom recovery' made by xda member koush. Every phone had a recovery partition designed so that if the user messes up a ROM installation, they can recover their phone. CWM is a modified recovery installed into the recovery partition that allows advanced control over ROM recovery, installation and much more.
Features of CWM include:
- NANDroid Backup, This allows you to completely back up your existing ROM with all its files, data and apps
- Restore Backup, Restores a previous backup (obviously...)
- ROM installation, Allows you to install a ROM contained inside a flashable .zip file
- Wipe data/Factory reset, completely erases all of your data contacts, apps etc, leaving your phone 'as new'
Amongst others...
How to install CWM
If you have already rooted your phone using the CF-root Kernel, then you already have CWM! If not, then just install the kernel linked to above in the 'how to root your phone' section
How to make a NANDroid backup using CWMBackups are important because they allow you to restore your ROM incase flashing goes wrong, or you phone starts playing up and displaying wierd bugs.
To make a backup, you need to boot into CWM recovery (done through the 'cwm' app installed onto your phone when you flash the cf-root kernel). Then, you need to navigate down to 'backup/restore' using the volume keys, and select it using the home key. From here, just click 'backup' and you are all set! Leave your phone make the backup (its takes some time) and then just reboot when it tells you its finished. To restore your backup, do the same but instead of clicking backup, click 'restore' instead. Choose which backup you would like to restore and leave the phone to do its magic. Done.

Thanks for your very precise reply.

[Q] CWM Recovery did not restore previous state, apps missing

Been having some issues with my SGS3 and charging, using JellyBam (v7, fairly old, so thought I would start fresh on latest version).
Using CWM5, I did a backup. Factory reset + wipe cache + wipe dalvik cache, then flashed the new ROM. Figured out what I needed to for the charging issues, but forgot I didn't to a titanium backup with all my apps, and more importantly the app data.
I can confirm looking in the CWM data.ext4.tar that the data I want is in there.
So I backed up my new flash setup, restored the previous backup, thinking I would do a titanium backup and get everything setup in my newly flashed ROM. After restore (I did another factory reset + cache + dalvik wipe first), it presents me with the google login wizard, and it seems to have remembered some of my apps but not others. So the restore seems to not have worked.
If I try reinstalling the app it gives me the 'Unknown error code during application install: "-24"' error
Any ideas how I can get the restore to work correctly?
OR some way from the fresh install (providing that restore works too) to grab the app data from my data.ext4.tar and move it into my working install? I tried just copying the file into /data/data but that didnt seem to do the trick
Old CWM
Flash the firmware you made a cwm backup of restore via CWM .
Flash Philz recovery and make a new backup .
Now get 'error while restoring /data'. Seems to be an issue on CWM5 for >2GB backups.
Going to try flashing Philz recovery and try again
Nope no joy. Is there any way I can extract data from a nandroid backup?
As I'm only really fussed about a handful of apps so could do it manually

maybe there is the way, but is better if you make a update of your CWM,... 6.0.3 or 0.4 touch... by the way I always use two mores apps for backing up data from my SIII ... one for sms, contacts ecc.. to extSDcard "Super backup pro" and the other app for backup data apps "Ultimate backup pro"
