Hi, I'm new here, but I figure my question is as good as any other. I recently became proud owner of the Xperia Neo MT15, which is now rooted and thoroughly protected, but I noticed something about the GPS and Network Location that bothers me - each time I enable either one, it asks me to agree to anonymous data collection.. Well, I don't agree, and I see no reason why I should be denied the features, because of my belief. So my question is this - does anyone know which system apk controls this? I would really like to impose it some restrictions using Pdroid as to stop the data collection. Any input is appreciated, thanks.

Nope. Not the culprit, since I don't even have it. I do however notice a lot of calls for Network Location from com.sonyericsson.learningclient(which sounds logical) and devicemonitor(which sounds just suspicious). They start actively operating as soon as I enable GPS. I've disabled the access to most things for both and set GPS and Network Location data to be served as random. I don't think there are any other moles.
It's weird, because they both sound so harmless, when I look at their descriptions in the list you linked to. Maybe there's something else. I'll see if I can find anything.
Sony has a particular feeling to collect data .
Soon you will discover also that the sony Gps will not works without data at all, because is affected by a bug, and it drops every 5 minutes if you don't have data enabled.
For more informations, please, read my thread about gps on xperia phones

Holy... why did I ever buy a SE in the first place?! I love the brand, and I've loved every phone I've had/used (those include K750, K850, P1i). I'll try to see if I have the 5 min. bug.
EDIT: I'm not sure if i observed the behavior or not. I didn't go anywhere, but stayed on the window with the GPS and nav software on. The software never displayed a loss of connection. I did notice the GPS icon went to it's unfixed state twice for a split second, 5 minutes apart, but I guess I'm supposed to be on the move to notice the issue. All the while learningclient would call for GPS location and be fed random data. The wifi and data connections were both disabled. I'm going for a drive, I'll test and report back.

Hm, you don't have it? You deleted it? I just run a search trough my phone and found a lot of files with idd in their names. Some are even in etc/security and in system/lib there is even one in framework
there's even one folder data/idd who also have output folder. It stores some files in there but can't figure out what trigger loging.
Hm there are also some iddd lib

Hm interesting, on link above, it says it "learns user typed words for default keyboard". I just opened up dex file from that app, looks like that app is for alot of things based on some strings in side of it.

I don't remember deleting IddAgent. The other two I track using PDroid. I just enable its notifications for everything and I watch what does what. learningagent seems very keen on getting GPS location, while it's on, and device monitor calls network location every once in a while, I see no good reason why.
If you are able to unlock your bootloader, and install a custom kernel like inteks, or nightelf ones (void guarantee), question about collecting data while you enable gps just dissapear. I dont know if there is a easier way.
If I wanted to throw away my warranty, I would have done it the day I bought it. I know a custom Rom would solve the issue, but I don't want to risk it with the warranty, not yet anyway.

UPDATE!!! (9/8/2012)
One of the newest versions of the Wallet app seem to prevent the issue (if you already have the error, you are still out of luck). Entropy512 made a detailed post here explaining how the secure element is still being used but how Google updated Wallet to prevent this issue:
Entropy512 said:
Completely dead wrong. The secure element is still in use - if it weren't, then GW would be working on the GT-I9100P and SGH-I777. GW wouldn't cause piles of SE spam in logcat when you use it. GW wouldn't REPORT A DAMNED SECURE ELEMENT VERSION IN THE ABOUT SETTINGS. GW wouldn't bomb if nfcee_access.xml is missing.
The only thing that changed with the "cards stored in the cloud" update is that instead of directly storing the info for an added Citi PayPass card, the SE now stores a "proxy" PayPass card that is funded from whatever card you added in the cloud.
However, Google has made SE management significantly more robust. Previously, if GW lost its credentials, it would just keep retrying until the SE bricked. Now, if it can't authenticate with the SE, it commands the SE to wipe its data and start from scratch. It's pretty much impossible to brick SEs with GW these days.
(Why the thread necromancy? People are still linking to this thread from elsewhere.)

While waiting to get my hands on one of these awesome phones I've been reading all I can about it. One thing I ran across in another forum was an issue people were having with the Nexuses & One X's and Google Wallet.
If you do not clear the Google Wallet settings before you do a hard reset/ROM flash, the secure element could be FOREVER BRICKED and you will NOT be able to ever use it for secure purposes such as Google Wallet purchases or future use of the secure element.
For some, this wont be a problem, but if you ever plan or at least want to have the option to use the google wallet, follow these simple steps before doing a hard reset or flashing a new ROM on your phone:
Launch Google Wallet
Hit menu button> Settings> Reset Google Wallet
You are now safe to flash a new ROM or reset your phone, Wallet will be waiting for you on the other side.
Clearing the app data or cache through settings or Titanium WILL NOT WORK! It HAS to be done within the Wallet app. This resets the secure certificate (?) and allows NFC to be used for secure purposes in the future.
---
While I understand the notion of keeping such functionality very secure, Google should have expressed the potential problem. Especially since hard resets are used as a solution when an ordinary user has a problem with their phone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this mean if this happens to me I wont be able to use NFC at all?
No. Not at all. NFC will still be functional for non-secure events, like Beam and NFC tag usage. This will only affect secure things, which at the moment is only Wallet.
Is there really no fix?
If you get the "secure element not responding" error, no. Of all the cases the only solution is to get a new phone. The secure element is permanently broken. In the future someone might find a fix, but that sounds unlikely. If you can swap your phone, do it.
How can I prevent this from happening?
If you don't do a lot of flashing, just remember to clear Wallet settings before flashing a new ROM. I would recommend to just leave Wallet cleared if you plan on flashing a lot, you forget once and it could be the end of your secure element.
I get a "Unsupported Device Error" yet Wallet still works, why?
This is a complete different error altogether and as a matter of fact, is not a big deal at all. This only shows up to root users and can easily be ignored -- Wallet will still work.
Why don't we have ROM devs cook in an auto-wiper when installing their ROM?
Only Wallet has the ability to access the phone's secure element, and it will likely be that way for the foreseeable future. A workaround would be to add an option before flashing anything to the recovery itself to ask people if they have cleared Wallet settings.
Wallet is asking for root permissions, should I grant them?
While there are no known repercussions to allowing root, as a general rule of thumb you should never allow root to an application you did not intend to give root access or do not know why it is requiring it. To be on the safe side (and in case something comes up in the future) deny root access to Wallet.
If I never set up Google Wallet will I be fine?
Yes. When you reset Wallet, its restores the secure element and the application data to how it was before an account was linked to your phone, therefore if you never set one up it will be the same as "restoring" an existing Wallet setup.
Wallet is stuck at "adding card" or "initializing account" or it tells me my device/carrier is not authorized, is my secure element toast?
Nope. This is a different message, Wallet activation is turned off at the moment. However, utnick came up with a working fix to get Wallet working right away. Check out his post here to get it. Please do not discuss Wallet activations here.

Also, forgive me if there is a thread on the Evo LTE forums about this, I tried searching and nothing came up, furthermore it's late and I did think this warranted utmost attention since people already have LTE's in their hands!

Yeah I thought it was nuts as well and this will have to be posted in every rom and this should be moved to.dev section as well.
Wow, never heard of this before. Thanks for the Info. I am also afraid I will forget about this, as I was planning on using google wallet. So yes, I would suggest a mod sticky this thread, and also suggest we spread the word and make sure all the devs make it a part of the process of flashing roms!
Who needs a NFC chip anyways. I'll use it for my $10 and thats it.

Perhaps once a recovery is built it can check if you have cleared it before flash or factory reset.
Or kind of like wimax keys, maybe a wallet clear could be backed up

Well I shall keep a eye out first people that will have that option would be the gn as the dev support is massive and has been out for awhile
Here's my fix for the Google Wallet error after rooting the phone.
WARNING: YOU WILL HAVE TO UNROOT.
1. Unroot (available option in SU menu)
2. Head to your "manage apps" option in settings -> apps
3. Find Wallet and force stop, uninstall, and disable.
4. Find NFC in more connections dialog in settings. If unchecked, check it back on.
5. Go back to Wallet in manage apps, enable it then launch it.
6. Wallet will try to update itself from Google Play, once that happens, it should go through setup with you again, and you'll be fine.
I confirmed it worked at the 7-11 down my block.

I was thinking about posting it in the dev section since that's probably where most people will be going to get ROMs but I know how XDA gets when posting in the wrong forums (ESPECIALLY the dev forum). But if a mod is okay with it, I do suggest this gets moved there, it will prove much more useful.

Interesting, I will add this to the main post as a possible fix, hopefully we wont ever have to confirm if it works or not, but it's a nice reference to have.
hi all
short story: galaxy s3 has the mainboard malfunction problem. had the phone replaced. what i got was the same IMEI handset, yet all wiped.
i was looking forward to the nice app restore feature.
however after setting language, timezone, etc. the phone is not taking me to the google sign in page, so to associate my handset with my account (hopefully restoring some of my data)
any idea why the phone does not ask for a google account sign in after reset?
i've updated to 4.1.2 on kies but the same issue, phone says it is all setup without asking for google sign in.
any tips how to make it ask for it at first device setup so to retrieve all the data backed up on google servers?
many thanks, all input appreciated.

Never had this issue myself, my only assumption is that the software isn't right otherwise it'd be asking right? Have you Rooted the handset? If so then pop on a ROM you like and see if you yield the same results.
As I said I've never had this issue before myself but I am suspecting bad software so do what I've suggested and see if it helps.

@dladz yes, the solution was to flash a new rom.
but no need for custom roms
SOLUTION: for anyone who might come across this unusual behavior
-if you do not get asked for google (and samsung) account after hard resets (through recovery console or otherwise) you have to reflash the same version with Odin. no need to tick 'reformat' or anything. i used the same stock version (gotten from http://androidromupdate.com - slightly differetn csc and phone) and it solved by itself just like this.
goes to show how little we actually know about Android's entrails..
Even though I think I disabled the Mocalite app , when I go to Manage apps > Running apps , it;s still there and force stop is required.
We need a root. I like the phone as is , I just don't like pre-installed apps that can't be stopped or removed.
Anyone know what this app is? We can uninstall via titanium backup because it seems to cause some wakelocks, but I have no idea what it is or what it does.

Hi,
As you may have known, ok Google issue has been solved in recent miui 10 stable update. Now it offers to unlock the device using voice match even when the display is turned off.
Now even I say ok Google when the screen is turned off, it does wake the device but it's still locked and it shows me pattern unlock.
How to unlock the device so that I can pass an actual command to Google assistant?
Thanks
My phone just updated to MIUI Global 10.0 (10.0.4.0 OEJMIFH) and it was fixed.
Now I can say 'Ok Goolge' and it opens assistant.
Phone unlocking by voice command is disabled by miui and afaik even Google is removing this feature from assistant, security reasons probably

Yes, I did that. It does wake up the device but doesn't unlock it.
Edit: Sorry. I wasn't facing the same issue. I was facing the issue where the Google Assistant wasn't working properly, and it would show me the error "unable to open microphone".
I found the solution on the MIUI forums. Here's what I did...
You have to go to the Google app in "Installed Apps" and clear the cache and the data and reboot, and it'll start working fine.
It was a little tricky to find the Google app as it wouldn't show in the Installed Apps. You have to click on the 3 dots on the upper right side corner and select "Show all apps" and then it'll show up. After that, you just clear the cache and the data and reboot phone, and it'll start working properly
Nevertheless, I tried your solution and it didn't work either way.

Don't get your hopes high about this feature's implementation on OEMs. Google were already silently phasing-out this feature and the OEMs will soon to follow.

It sort of works for me (Stable 10.0.6.0). However, following those instructions it only wakes the phone, but doesn't unlock. But - after getting to that point, I went into the Google assistant, settings, voice, voice match and it let me select the slider - gave me a warning about being less secure, and then it woke up AND unlocked via voice.
Unfortunately, it then failed to do it the next time I tried it and asked for my pattern/face. Not sure if it requires log in sometimes and not others, or if the first time was just luck!
At one point it would wake up and let me ask a question, but only read or show me the answer when I unlocked, but now it won't even do that, so basically it's completely inconsistent! hurrah!
Clearly some sort of security issue - whether it's Xiaomi or Google's fault is up for debate, but if Google are removing it from their flagship then I wouldn't be surprised if it never works properly on anything else.
If they would only get Trusted Places working properly (Google that is) or even allow trusted Wifi (I know the security implications but I'm prepared to accept them!) then it would probably not be necessary.
I could keep it unlocked with my watch, but then I find that (despite pocket mode) my phone regularly does random things while in my pocket!
I had similar issues with my Mate 10 Pro, that I've just changed from, so it's not solely Xiaomi's fault, but is it really too much to ask to expect Android features that are offered to actually work out of the box?!

You're right. But if it had worked then it would have been a great party trick. I never had a phone which could wake up with an audio command.

The irony is that I've just switched from a Huawei Mate 10 Pro (Various reasons, but flaky bluetooth top of the list) and that did do it after the last update. That's because they have their own voice recognition baked in to the Kirin chipset though I think, so it's not using just Google's voice match - and even that took a lot of fiddling to get working. No idea how secure it was, but it was handy for finding the phone by asking it where it was! I refuse to talk to my phone in public anyway, so it's something I can live without I think
