Hi,
As you may have known, ok Google issue has been solved in recent miui 10 stable update. Now it offers to unlock the device using voice match even when the display is turned off.
Now even I say ok Google when the screen is turned off, it does wake the device but it's still locked and it shows me pattern unlock.
How to unlock the device so that I can pass an actual command to Google assistant?
Thanks
My phone just updated to MIUI Global 10.0 (10.0.4.0 OEJMIFH) and it was fixed.
Now I can say 'Ok Goolge' and it opens assistant.
Phone unlocking by voice command is disabled by miui and afaik even Google is removing this feature from assistant, security reasons probably

Did you try 'Voice Match Unlock' (or something because mine is in portuguese) in settings? Here (again) is working.

Yes, I did that. It does wake up the device but doesn't unlock it.
Edit: Sorry. I wasn't facing the same issue. I was facing the issue where the Google Assistant wasn't working properly, and it would show me the error "unable to open microphone".
I found the solution on the MIUI forums. Here's what I did...
You have to go to the Google app in "Installed Apps" and clear the cache and the data and reboot, and it'll start working fine.
It was a little tricky to find the Google app as it wouldn't show in the Installed Apps. You have to click on the 3 dots on the upper right side corner and select "Show all apps" and then it'll show up. After that, you just clear the cache and the data and reboot phone, and it'll start working properly
Nevertheless, I tried your solution and it didn't work either way.
Ok Google straight up doesn't work for me
Delete data, clear cache, udpate app. This worked for me

you are saying you can wake and unlock the sleeping phone by saying ok Google, right?
I have tried deleting cache and data, updating but it didn't work for me.

Don't get your hopes high about this feature's implementation on OEMs. Google were already silently phasing-out this feature and the OEMs will soon to follow.

It sort of works for me (Stable 10.0.6.0). However, following those instructions it only wakes the phone, but doesn't unlock. But - after getting to that point, I went into the Google assistant, settings, voice, voice match and it let me select the slider - gave me a warning about being less secure, and then it woke up AND unlocked via voice.
Unfortunately, it then failed to do it the next time I tried it and asked for my pattern/face. Not sure if it requires log in sometimes and not others, or if the first time was just luck!
At one point it would wake up and let me ask a question, but only read or show me the answer when I unlocked, but now it won't even do that, so basically it's completely inconsistent! hurrah!
Clearly some sort of security issue - whether it's Xiaomi or Google's fault is up for debate, but if Google are removing it from their flagship then I wouldn't be surprised if it never works properly on anything else.
If they would only get Trusted Places working properly (Google that is) or even allow trusted Wifi (I know the security implications but I'm prepared to accept them!) then it would probably not be necessary.
I could keep it unlocked with my watch, but then I find that (despite pocket mode) my phone regularly does random things while in my pocket!
I had similar issues with my Mate 10 Pro, that I've just changed from, so it's not solely Xiaomi's fault, but is it really too much to ask to expect Android features that are offered to actually work out of the box?!

The irony is that I've just switched from a Huawei Mate 10 Pro (Various reasons, but flaky bluetooth top of the list) and that did do it after the last update. That's because they have their own voice recognition baked in to the Kirin chipset though I think, so it's not using just Google's voice match - and even that took a lot of fiddling to get working. No idea how secure it was, but it was handy for finding the phone by asking it where it was! I refuse to talk to my phone in public anyway, so it's something I can live without I think

I went into google now search settings and performed the voice training and enabled the option for hot word detection from lock screen and power off but it doesn't work. the only time it works is when i'm at the home screen UNlocked OR at the google now search area. Screen off or from lock screen detection simply does not work.
does anyone else notice this?
I don't have the nexus 9 but I did install the latest google now search and launcher from apkmirror .com and there was an always listening option in 'hotword detection' in voice settings of the google now. There was also the screen off detection option but it was greyed out. I had the always listening in all apps option enabled and it was working greatly but the next day I woke up and the feature wasn't working so I went into settings and discovered that both of those options had disappeared (not greyed out but freaking disappeared), its some kind of google restriction, they are remotely restricting users from using these features for some unexplained reason.
Maybe its the same for u or it might be something else.
Same here, bit worked arter reboot
It works for a while after a reboot, but eventually stops working after a couple hours.
Looks like a common bug, I've seen some threads about this same issue (and I'm experiencing the same problem, too)

there is an option in Google Now -> Settings -> Voice -> OK google detection ....a check box exists here stating:
When Locked
Allow "OK Google" to start a voice search or action from a secure lock screen
so, it would seem that this is what was intended. perhaps what they meant here was that the screen has to be on and not timed out. dunno.
Yes, but screen has to be on. Only nexus 6 and 9 support GN with screen locked and off
Google search from locked screen works for a while and then stops. It's done this on my s4 and note 3. It is defenetly supposed to work from secure lock screen. In Google now settings there is a 3rd check box and you even get a warning stating anyone may be able to unlock your phone.
Google needs to fix this issue. I'm not sure what's up with these companies making screwed up software. Where are the devs, and why are they getting paid if they can't make flawless software. When I crash My car into a tree trying to unlock my phone and I press a law suit against google I'll bet they will fix it. Always takes a law suit to fix ****.
Oh. Anyone notice every app you've ever paid for or downloaded is under my apps "all" what's up with "all" I'll file my documents in my office under the "all" folder and see how quickly I get fired...Thanks for allowing me to rant.

Yes there is. Make sure you have updated to the latest ROM (EU is B380)
1 - Backup all your stuff with Huawei native app
2 - Factory reset and let it boot
3 - Setup your google account and nothing more. Also don´t restore any apps yet.
4 - Test incoming calls when screen is off.
5 - Setup Huawei account
7 - Install Skype and it will restore itself call and chat history
8 - Test Skype (I have problems with it but I have 2 additional devices with the same account at the same time that rings at the same time so it might be just me)
9- Install fresh remaining communications apps like Whatsapp. From my experience when you restore from backup they will bug the notifications, so it´s better a fresh install while just restoring the chat history from backup.
10 - Setup maximum priority for communication apps notification
11 - If you feel it´s necessary you can also set those apps not to be closed and be automatically launched at startup.

No,
just open Telephon Manager
Enable Notification Manager and then check the config
you also have to allow the apps in autostart manager

It's probably cuz these are third party apps
It's from Play Store.
I also tried with b170 and b360 update. I dont have the notification problem in my Honor 7 Indian Version..
Most notification problems comes from restoring those apps from backup.
If you just install a fresh app after factory reset and then ONLY restore app history (if needed as Skype doesnt need) you shouldnt get any notification problem.
Well phone is new, there is no any backup. I tried factory reset, same problem. I am waiting 14 days for huawei unlock code, i will root phone and then move apps from data/app to system/app, that should solve the problem. I am on EMUI 4.0.1 so that's all with marshmallow, everything else is working ok.

From what I noticed, the navigation bar can be set black with a black theme, however, it still becomes white in certain apps (eg. Chrome).
I didn't see a way to make it black universally.

surprised of how awfull it is to restore an android phone?
there are so many apps (like home banking) that are linked to the phone and cannot be backed up... I try to avoid that. But I guess it is time to switch to Samsung S10 soon was hoping to wait a little longer till the prices go down.....
but the pie update also seems to drain my battery even faster. what a mess

Well, the battery drain is just another reason to factory reset and it's kinda ironic that you'll have to set your new phone anyway.I told you to factory reset because I solved a lot of problems on my phones through the years after major updates. It's not mandatory but very advisable. At the end it's your phone and your will to do it and set it again.

is there any "small" cache reset that will not delete everything?
in case it is interesting for someone:
Last SOT test from a few days ago (before the update) was 4:45 with normal use, mostly indoors, which is not great, but good enough, since I use my phone alot and sometimes charge 2-3 times a day.
will try a regular test with pie in a few days, but I am too busy to have it under similar conditions...

a clean install is actually difficult; (as well as to switching to other brand phones)
- my messaging apps loose all there messages (some have manual backup)
- banking apps loose there unique keys -> need to be reauthorized with the bank
- two factor auth apps need to carefully be restored
...
of course if you have a few plain games that are cloud synced, this does not matter; but if you actually use the phone it is not so easy to restore all data; (especially ensuring that nothing of importance gets lost)
I will go as far as wipe cache partition i/o factory reset. Every phone has it flaws at some point.
sure.
its just bad that there is not a streamlined backup method; LGs "mobile switch" is a mess, and gets stuck regularly on messaging apps with many files(?)
best results with preinstalled apps was actually with Huawei/honor; they seem to work quite well (but I don't like there aggressive power management)
I don't like to reset a phone before I have everything setup in a different phone (2 factor etc...) because I would hate to loose data and money.
so now I either get a cheap crap phone; or another LGV30 (cheap as hell at the moment, but getting old), or a new samsung, which I didn't plan on before autumn and new phones released....

I had the same struggles you have.
Ultimately I had to give up and switch back to Android Messenger. It backs up all messages. For 2-factor authentication I use Authy so it can restore my codes from the cloud. But you are correct, I use Android on my Chromebook and setup a 2nd two factor method (email) in my accounts before I reset my phone. I'm annoyed by games, I had to restart so many already even though Google Play Games promises to save the progress. Hope you find another way.

This is pretty much mandatory on any device. When flashing a new OS zip in TWRP, it's always a clean install. 7-8 and 8-9.
Even if not rooted and take an OTA, you either have to let the update settle or just factory reset. I've seen MANY people throughout the years on XDA complain about the newest OS version.
The general reply will always be factory reset.

You are misinformed because pretend this is a new phone you are setting up.
How would you go about that? You would use the same two factor authentication on the new phone. You can't say two factor authentication wouldn't work on new phone or nobody could ever get a new phone...
Plus, there are SMS Backup and restore apps. WhatsApp has cloud backup if you turn it on Many messaging apps like Hangouts sync across different devices.
If you're rooted, there's TWRP and Titanium Backup -- where you can restore data to ALL apps.

1) I use Nova launcher and periodically export configuration backups to Gmail or Google Drive. You can also store them on your device, like microSD card. At any point in time, on this phone or another, then you can download and restore those home screens/desktops. I have 5 screens with apps arranged by most use (home screen), spreading out then by categories.
2) A little too late now, but Google also makes backups of your home screen configuration and when you Factory Reset your phone or buy a new phone, and you first sign in, Google will ask if you wish to restore that most recent configuration remembered from your most recent device. However, by this point in time, Google has now backed up the "new" Pie configuration you do not want. This is why you should have factory reset at the very beginning.

Hey XDA!
I have this unique problem where my phone refuses to install anything outside the Play Store. Manually downloaded APK will not install, updates from System App Updater also will not install. Anything from MI Store will also not install.
Apps from the Play Store install just fine.
I've checked every single setting that could cause this. Only thing I haven't tried is a Factory Reset.
Please advise.

I would think that you have set another app to install apks, like firefox, and that app is failing or has failed following the update. See what apps can install apks and see whether the app has the right permissions in settings. If necc remove the app and reinstall. OR - there is a setting under Security which has to be enabled for unkown sources. Perhaps the 10.3..7 update has reverted the status of this setting?
All settings are in their default state.
I reset app preferences, unknown sources is also enabled. This problem is preventing even Xiaomi from installing its own apps. I cleared data of package installer. As I said above, I tried EVERYTHING.
Any thing from the Play Store installs and updates just fine. Anything else gets stuck at the "Installing" screen and then twenty minutes later says... "Xyz App failed to install."
I have plenty of space.
Phone is pure stock.
For APKs you need an all installer app. Don't know why other apps do not install. I am on 10.3.7.0 Global Stable Rom stock locked bootloader and do not have any problems at all. Phone runs perfectly.

Try disabling Play Store Protect. I had similiar issue once. But only with few apps (like Lucky Patcher)

Mentioning WAREZ on XDA means you're liable to get an infraction/ban. Please don't do that and edit your post to remove it.

Warez - Illegally obtained or compromised software.
It is not a warez, its not a website with it. Its a tool, so how can It be banable, I don't I encourage anyone to use it so ban would be out of context. Also I am pretty sure no one would know What is L*** P******
can you try APKPURE ?
First of all, I appreciate all of your replies. But I am slightly annoyed that most of you either did not read what I typed or are suggesting I circumvent Android's built in protection just to get around a bug.
That is NOT a solution. Especially considering I'm the ONLY one facing this issue and that it isn't a wide spread one.
Regardless, as I've mentioned before, I'VE TRIED EVERY SINGLE LOGICAL THING POSSIBLE within my knowledge...
I eventually Factory Reset my phone.
And now everything is working as it should.
I have a feeling this problem arose because of either a bug with Xiaomi "Security" app or with the Xiaomi "Themes" app. But I'm not an expert. I've sent logs to Xioami through Feedback App.
I hope none of you face this issue.
Again to summarize : Factory Reset Solved My Problem.

this is a communty forum! non of us liable to provide any solution to anyone but to share our experiences like at the end you did!
everyone of use face problems which for us is unique and some times the solution is also either unique or at the end its either reflashing or factory reseting the device which we all know will fix any problem but will it reach to the cause? thats another story!
so where on xda we all just share our experience this is not a helpline
Hi, I face this problem too for my father's phone red mi 2. As I can tell you, after factory reset, I face this problem after a while again. I don't know what is it.

Check the security app. Tick off the scan before installing. I'm on the latest 11.0.8 stable and everything works fine on my end. But from what I can see that may be the cause of your problems

You know you are being disrespectful. First of all this is a tech page/group/whatever. Have you seen most of the posts here? Most are about rooting, bypassing, etc. And you yourself have said that you have tried everything except doing a factory reset right? Well people are providing you solutions before doing that. If you have nothing good to say then just don't say it. Didn't your mom or guardian or whoever teach you manners?
If you didn't want to do anything like rooting or whatever, then right it down. Don't expect people to be psychics to know what you want. ??

I quote"I have this unique problem where my phone refuses to install anything outside the Play Store. Manually downloaded APK will not install, updates from System App Updater also will not install. Anything from MI Store will also not install.
Apps from the Play Store install just fine.
I've checked every single setting that could cause this. Only thing I haven't tried is a Factory Reset.
Please advise."
Now, which part here did you say that we didn't read what you said? And which statement said that we disregarded "Android's builtin protection"? Are you alright? You do know that the security app is not a "builtin" android protection software right? That's Xiaomi. The only builtin security from Android are security patches and play protect, or didn't you know that? You said you tried everything, but aside from downloadinh apks, did you say from where you installed it? Did you install it using Chrome after downloading them? Did you ever try opening the apks from a file manager? Did you try turning off play protect? Or turning off the security scan toggle wherein it says "scan before installing"?
You said this is only your issue, yet you are annoyed at people giving you advice and options when you yourself never even mentioned whether you are rooted or if you didn't want to "turn off security".
Glad you solved your issue, but next time if you want specific advice note it down and don't be a jerk to people who only want to help.
I had this issue and solved it by using the original file manager instead of ES file manager.
Is there any kind that actually works? I keep fishing around on Google play and everything is either old, doesn't work, or is full of sh*t, or a combination of all 3.
Welcome to XDA
If you're running Android 9 or higher simply do a factory reset. There are no known rootkits that can worm out of the user partition, once that data is wiped so is the malware.
Don't reload it again after the factory reset.

You're welcome. The other way is to find the malware and delete it completely.

Which would be how? Would I need a app or something for the pc? And if so do you have any recommendations? I have the mixsilver file manager on my phone (pixel 6 "Not pro"). Would there be a way I could find it thru there? Also my device is not rooted. So would I need to root? I'm sorry if this gets on your nerves. If so tell me, won't hurt my feelings. I'm literally a noob at this stuff. I've been trying to teach myself and just do trial and error but im getting in over my head and don't wanna accidentally brick my phone or worse.
What makes you sure you have spy/malware? Or do you mean adware?
Cheers
Tom
With Avast or AVG Antivirus you can do a pretty good scan of your apps, even system apps if you want.
For Factory reset see here https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/4596836
or go here on a PC (you need your Pixel connected by usb to the PC then): https://pixelrepair.withgoogle.com/carrier_selection

Chrome ****tin out 3 gigs of data a day. I have unlimited so it's not that big of a deal but still.....and some of the options I had in settings like "permissions, enable/disable, clear data/cache" that I know for a fact I had not too long ago are now greyed out or nonexistent. Also sometimes when I bring up "location" thru the settings menu everything is supposed to be "off" but there's 2 or 3 that look like they are switching back to say "off" as soon as the page shows. 1 of them outright takes several seconds to display any "on or off" setting at all. I've found a "Verizon" system app on my phone, some kind of Samsung telephony thing. And it seems like I can input a change to settings or something and when I look at my phone in the morning everything I had set up is back to it's previous settings.

Thank you. Umm.....stupid question but I've never done a full reset before so.....how and would I need to move my apps to another storage or could I just go back thru the play store and redownload? And any paid apps and subscriptions?
It probably explains all that in those links doesn't it?
Just do factory reset and you are okay.. Then start using phone as new..

For what it's worth, the Verizon system app comes with the phone in case you use a Verizon sim.
If you end up clean flashing or factory resetting, I would not restore any apps from backups. I would reinstall everything fresh or you could just be putting the malware back on your phone, if that indeed is what you have.

Just redownload them. Google remembers your bought apps or subscriptions in your Google account, so as long as you use the same email/account for logging in to Playstore after Factory reset you're good.
Your contacts normally are also synced to your Google Account, so you get them back also then.

It comes with the phone by default just in case you do use Verizon. Basically that app helps give the phone Verizon support, of sorts. It's disabled by default if you don't use Verizon so there's really nothing to worry about with that app.

Man thank you. There's stuff on here that I don't understand and I've been thinking it's something I've downloaded or whatever. I'm new to all of this.
