[Q] GTA Vice City crashes when entering mission - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm posting this here since the problem seems to be i9100-speific, though I might be wrong, and posting on Rockstar support forums is pointless for obvious reasons...
My Vice City crashes whenever I enter the mission Guardian Angels (7%through the game) - Tommy walks to Colonel's boat gate, the screen turns dark and mission title appears. Then all the ambient noises stop and so does the game after a second, while trying to load the cinematic.
No matter what tweaks and performance boosts I've found and applied, I just can't get over this crash.
I've had very similar problem with mission Back Alley Brawl back when the game came out and had to stop playing it because of it. Now that I've successfully passed it, I thought that Some patch fixed the problem. Since it did only temporarily, I'm thinking it might be kernel/ROM related, but who knows...
I'm currently running 4.1.2 I9100XXLS8 with kernel 3.0.31 Syiah-s2-v6.0b4+
Also, among supported devices, R* lists Vice City only as compatible with "Mali-based SGS2s". I suppose that this relates to other models of sgs2 as wiki page says that all i9100s have Mali graphic processors. Or can there be something wrong with my phone's hardware, that's causing the problem?
Any tips on fixing this will be very appreciated

Angry Birds performance

So I downloaded Angry Birds, one of the first apps any android used would download.
Now that I've reached some of the more complex levels, it looks like the P500 cannot keep up with the larger number of falling objects, and the game ends up stuttering/framing.
Is this normal? I had read that the P500 can play the game with ease.
I'm on the stock 2.2.1 ROM.
You could try and enable hardware acceleration. You might get a slightly reduced battery life, but angry birds might run smoother..
With stock ROM, it is normal. You can only experience better performance with a custom ROM with hardware acceleration enabled, a bit of CPU overclocking and a kernel that minimizes the touchscreen lag bug.
In my particular case, even with all these "goodies" I can't really enjoy the game: the stuttering is not completely gone and makes ending the level with 3 stars very difficult. But it's a lot better than what you experience right now with stock ROM.
There's a trick to that, even without overclocking, custom ROMs and kernels, etc.
When a laggy level begins, wait for the lag to stop. There's a lot of physics going on when you start a level since it has to reposition the blocks and stuff. Once they're not moving (no more physics stuff), the lag stops. Then you play the game. Just wait for a while and it'll be smooth. Trust me on this
^I've also done that, and it works pretty well.
But on some of the really complex stages in the latter parts of the game, even using this trick in conjunction with the void ROM and hardware acceleration doesn't help. We're pretty much running into the limits of the hardware, and there isn't really anything we can do about it. That said, I'd love it if I were wrong.
Yeah, kpbotbot, done that too. The game kinda demands it, but it's not enough. The amount of time that gets wasted waiting for things to settle and game to move fluid ruins the entire experience.
I know. I recently uninstalled the game Last level I was on was the one with the boomerang-ish birds.
Relevant note: A PC version of Angry Birds was out last month. No Linux version, but WINE runs it pretty well
I am actually enjoying Angry Birds with void + hardware acceleration + touchscreen fix. If you have a Class 2 memory card, Angry Birds may have installed to you SD card directly and the card's speed may be slowing the game down. Move it to the internal memory.
Also, wait until after the initial lag to play. This matters a lot since not waiting causes my phone to freeze up.
HW doesn't really do much in-game . Believe me on this one . You're better off just oc-ing your cpu to at least 768 and also try to have as much free memory as possible
Cheers.
Yeah, just like some people said and it sounds like were asking too much, but just try to be patient and wait til the game loads all the physics then the lag might be gone. Sometimes i move forwards/backwards a few times then it disapears, or even calling the menu once and then getting back.
try mik's kernel
Or wait.for the lite version.
i've noticed a bit of lag too, being patience definitely helps.
Whats this lite version all about? any changelog available?
I don't think it is the fault of the hardware. My old iPhone 3G played angry birds no problem, but generally it was a lot slower than my O1.

[Q] Gameboid + CM7 issues

have installed mik's cm7 stable 6.3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946354
installed gameboid, trying to play games but it keeps crashing.
both golden sun 1 and 2 just cut out randomly in the middle of play, and although i have the latest version of gameboid where the golden sun issues are fixed it still doesnt work so i am assuming its a problem with gameboid and CM7 as opposed to a game compatibility issue
there is a chance its just golden sun and optimus one, as i had gameboid when i was running void #echo but i never tried golden sun
does anyone else have this problem?
A problem like that can be caused by an unstable overclock(are you OCed?). Try lowering your OC value if you are indeed OCed.
no i haven't changed the clocking, its still on 245/600
the thing is that its not a universal problem, i can play advanced wars and pokemon fine but both golden suns do it.
i don't think its an issue between gameboid and the games...
could it be a golden sun/optimus one problem? i read something about problems with games being fixed for some phones but not others
Well there is a lot of issues with golden sun and a few other games, so if this is indeed the case, you should try to contact "gameboid's" developer instead and maybe he could address the matter itself.
Keep us posted if you get any more info(and if you get any reply from him) about this.
yeah i think it might just be a phone model problem, as it seems like game crashes are fixed for specific models... maybe the next update will fix it
there seems to be no way to contact yongzh (the dev) about it apart from posting a feedback on the market

[DEV Q]ICS Touchpad 2D & 3D performance-jerky

Hi all,
I've been playing with the ICS builds (be it CM9, AOKP, or Butter) and they all suffer from what I refer to as choppiness. This is most easily seen scrolling the homescreens which feels slightly jerky. It can be pinpointed using the program fps2D (you have to get it from another device, doesn't show up on the market with the Touchpad). When you launch fps2D you will see how the ball moves smoothly and every now and then it jerks back and forth.
This creates the really bad score that it receives in the benchmark. 3D performance is also rather bad for some reason.
Why am I starting this topic? No, its not a rant. I'm letting everyone know this same issue was encountered with the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 which is based I believe on the same chipset. Initially, the device had really bad stutter which it seems is very similar to the stutter I am seeing when I run fps2D on the touchpad. After some experienced devs started tracking the issue down, they found it was the 2D GPU drivers causing the issue and they fixed it by using the AT&T Skyrocket 2G GPU drivers. The skyrocket also uses the same chipset. I believe this same bug is currently plagueing the HP Touchpad ICS builds as the choppy performance is stemming from the GPU.
Can a kernel dev look into the issue? The Skyrocket GPU drivers (and now the fixed T-Mobile SGS2) should have the answer.
As far as i can understand, devs can't just take and use any driver, they need this driver to be made for ICS, which is a problem right now, since there are no dual-core Qualcomm devices with official ICS.

[Q] Some games keep freezing

Well, I'm having some trouble when it comes to 3D rendering on my phone, whenever I use a combination of an AOSP/AOKP based rom (happened to me with latest Task's AOKP and Slim Bean build 5) and some semi intensive and, of course, intensive games, after some time, system crashes completely, the sound gets stuck in a loop of the latest 0.1 seconds (lol) and pretty much nothing works, I have to pull the battery. This happens normally in the first 30 seconds.
I believe this happens because of the new drivers, as those games (Rayman Origins, Beach Buggy Blitz and Real Racing 3) work perfectly with stock JB. But those are just guesses. Any help is appreciated,
Thanks!
It's not that I'm hurrying you, or demanding you to help me, but I'm still having the same problem and I can't find any solution. :S Please lol
If you couldn't give the answer for this you didn't look hard enough.

hey there, just flashed task's 4.2.2 yesterday and I am getting the same problem while trying to play Simpsons Tapped Out. Have you been able to figure anything out?
I originally thought it was the kernal having an issue with allocating resources, but my searches show that other people have the same problem with 4.2.2. If this is how its gonna be I may have to revert back to 4.1.2....

Check cpu/gpu voltage levels. My phone used to crash when playing graphically intensive games until I realized my gpu voltages were set too low.
This happens to me with NFS Most Wanted and NOVA 3. Any other game seems to work. I really want 4.2.2 CM 10.1 or AOKP or any of those Nexus like ROMs, but I ran into the same problem with all of them. Came to the conclusion is just 4.2.2 Vanilla based ROMs. Since then I've switched to SHOstock3. I really want the Nexus experience though. I just don't want to have to give up games I've paid for .

ZTE v965 - unstable device

Hello everyone.
I'm here because I have a problem and I need some help.
As stated in topic - my problem is about ZTE v965 phone. At the beginning everything was great, I didn't even expect such good phone for such low price. But my device became unstable, especially when I try to start a 3D game or even benchmark (sometimes 3D test from AnTuTu does not even start). I've been trying many ROMs for my device and that's probably the cause, I've flashed many of them, got one brick and many bootloops.
And right now, no matter the ROM, my device is suffering from a very small amount of free memory. v965 has only 512MB RAM but most of the time only about 50-100 is available and it used to be about 250MB after cleaning. I'm experiencing many FCs which are most probably caused by OOM. For example, I had no problems playing RR3, Eternity Warriors 3, Death Dome and others - now most of the time they just FC after the beggining loading. I even have problems with PowerAMP playing in the background of a web browser - one of them usually stops. Under the "running processes" in settings I usually find some system processes or other background apps (Viper, PowerAMP, Easy Battery Saver) that are restarting and taking up my RAM.
I've trying whatever came to my mind and I don't have any idea. Stock ROM, other ROMs, no system-messing apps, no root, new recovery, no tweaks or many of them. I just don't know what else to do.
Your help would be very appreciated
