Excessive battery drain or just heavy usage? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Mainly what the title says, my galaxy s3 has been used quite heavily over the past 2 weeks, just after flashing the last 4.1.2 update, xxemg4. With wifi on(browsing Internet, etc) it won't last more than 11 hours more or less... I am pretty sure that when I had xxemc2 (the one that was pre installed on the phone) Battery life was better... Any ideas? Or am I using it too heavily?

Screen on time is a better indicator of battery life if you are a heavy user, anything over 5hrs is good.

Has anyone noticed the battery increase on the SGS2?

I have updated my phone, Android 2.3.6 KI4
When I made the update to this version, I've noticed a HUGE improvement in battery life, to which the phone can last a full whole day - that's with data switched on, making phone calls, listening to music and browsing the web.
From my previous version, I would find my phone just under 50% of battery life at about 12pm noon. But now, the phone can last over 75% at 3pm! Not only that but I still have enough battery life past 12am!
Just wondering if anyone else had noticed this perk. One of my mates has the phone too, though he hasn't updated the phone yet. We noticed a big comparison between the 2 phones battery life where his phone would die at 3pm, whereas my phone still has 70% of it.
Updates can help. But different apps make an even bigger difference. Sometimes one app can cause a battery drain. Use betterbatterystats which is free on xda to see if there see apps causing drain

I have the best battery life with the KL1 modem which has so far been the best for me as regards to battery life, I flash through odin.
I must agree samsung have done really good Job with each rom updates / modems with regards to battery life and other things .
Frankly as a heavy user, I decided addressing the issue by the supply side, i.e. got a spare with a wall charger and really don't bother about it. Right now, two are more than enough, if I ever feel that even this is a bit low, will get another battery!
previously on 2.3.3 - battery 9am to 6pm
now with XXKI3 2.3.5 battery 9am (1st day) to 10pm (Next day)
i am really happy now
I went down the 2 charge route, one for work, and one for overnight in my house..
2's a charm.
It's true that 2.3.5 battery life is good and can last for 2 days on average use and easily 1 day on heavy usage (except gaming).
I my experience that's much better than 2.3.4
2.3.5 is very stable too, so I have decided not to be first mover when official ICS 4.0.3 is available through KIES
Running 2.3.6 now.. I would strongly suggest you guys charge your S2's using the usb cable to your laptop or desktop... why? Based on my personal experience.. I noticed that my s2 drains much lesser than when I used to charge using the wall charger.
It dramatically increased my battery's life...
Could it be of the slow but steady trickle charging effect on the usb cable rather than directly on the charger?

Why the battery so quickly get on android
This is written in the Droid Incredible forum but likely applies to all android phones:

I am hoping that with the release of ICS for S2 by Samsung will make it better.

I don't think so. I use developing version of ICS (CM 9) for Galaxy GIO. Battery loses energy faster...
Unfortunately the battery life on smartphones aren't very good. I tollerate it though because I don't want to go back to the old feature phones and Blackberry is like a swear word to me.
Pefectly Normal, thats why I keep my SGS2 on flight mode when I sleep. There are lots of apps available to turn flight mode in a schduled basis.
Also to increase battery you can type *#9900# and turn fast dormancy off.
With that and flight mode and with GPS, WiFi and Data OFF my phone loses only 1% battery after 7hours of my sleep
you are lucky man..most other phones battery gets down by 15-20% in night
It is normal..
I am also noticing my battery life on ICS is worse than before. but there are some customizations in the rom I need to look into using

I would say that is expected given the phone specs. My HTC Thunderbolt would drain alot just sitting around.
Hopefully newer phones will have higher capacity batterys like the razr maxx while still keeping a slim factor!
What you should do (if your phone has NFC) is set up a tag next to your bed that like turns it to flight mode or turns off some radios

Normal, do not worry
It's normal due to the fact that the phone still syncs with the internet every now and then while you're sleeping. Then there are the apps which may connect to the web every now and then to get updates for whatever.
Thus the 6-7% drop in battery overnight (about 1% per hour is pretty good imho).
To stop most of the drain, either prevent apps and the like from syncing during the night or put your phone into airplane mode.
With the new ics, i can keep my phone with 1.5 days
and it shows that it actually depends on the software itself

Battery Check

Hi,
is there any possibility to check battery health?
Since flashing JB 4.2.1 weeks ago battery life decreased and is getting even worse. No wakelocks, bbs is looking fine. Tried mcm's cm10.1, official cm.10.1 and Slim Bean RC2 with stock kernel, Siyah 5 and Dorimanx. With light use and less than 2 hours screen on time battery lasts one day. No big difference if reception is good or bad. Media scanner is fine too. The phone is more than one year old.

Plenty of topics on battery, use search.
All those topics are about people who are not able to setup their phones properly, but not about the physical battery
Almost every battey stats app you can download from the market can tell you battery health (very inaccurately).
If you're getting bad battery life though, the chance of it being an "unhealthy" battery are very low. Infact, on every ROM/Kernel you've listed I've had poor battery, I only get a good run on stock - there is way more to battery life than just wakelocks.

/Q/ CPU damaged?

Hey,
I'm using my S2 with CM10.1, and sometimes I have redraws when sweeping through pages in Trebuchet, and when I play games like Zombie Highway I have FPS drops sometimes. I never have used my device with overclocking or undervolting. Just one time used Siyah kernel with higher GPU freqs. Is there a chance that my CPU is damaged or bad? Btw I'm experiencing huge battery drain, but I'm using extended Samsung's battery with 2000mAh. I have taken that battery back to shop, because thought it was wrong, they replaced it to brand new, and the problem is the same. I'm surfing in internet with my S2 switched to 2G network and after 10minutes of surfing I see 5% battery came down... Usualy I charge it two times per day, which is very annoying. My screen brightness is 40%. What's the problem? If this problem will be in future I will probably switch to iPhone.

battery use stats?
Here it is.

Are you on the latest nightly? If you are and you do face the problem, make a backup and return to stock ROM to check if the problem persists. There have been a few complaints regarding games in the official discussion thread, but should be fixed soon.

[Q] Battery life very poor - 4-5 hours

I bought my Samsung Galaxy S2 a couple of weeks ago from a friend, it already had a custom ROM installed, I think CyanogenMod. I use the phone mostly for internet browsing and watching YouTube videos but the battery seems to drain very quick. It lasts for 4-5 hours. I went on Settings menu and checked the battery stats and most of it is taken up by screen, I have it set to full brightness and I prefer it like that. So is there any way to get a better battery life or is 4-5 hours normal for an S2?

If you get 4-5h screen on time with full brightness + web surfing and youtube... well your phone is one of a kind.

4-5 hours , browsing, youtube, full brightness .. thats more than enough mate. look at you battery usage screen statistics... if it is more than 2.5 hours everything is fine
Hi. If your phone is from your friend and the battery drains very slow, its one of two things: 1) is that your friend has used it alot while it was charging, because that actually worsens the battery life. 2) is that you're just using it on high brightness. My suggestion is that you switch to auto brightness and you buy a new battery

47% of the battery is used by the screen, is this meant to be normal.

Yes, just check how long screen has been on for as well, but sounds like if you reduce the brightness you'll see quite an improvement

assuming that those 4-5 hours is your screen on time...full brightness...youtube...I think you wanted to ask "Why my battery lasts so long?!?:laugh::laugh:
OK thanks for the replies, I will set brightness to low.
