[Q] Galaxy s4 softbricked - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hey guys,
I screwed up big time. I used a chinese application to root my phone, and it worked, but everything was in chinese. As this is a new XDA account I can't link the tutorial I followed, but it was from youtube by Andre Hebra. The app worked and rootchecker worked as well. I then installed the English superuser app and attempted to replace the chinese one with it by deleting the original and renaming the english one in system/app. After this i realized I screwed up and attempted to restore using odin and a 4.2.2 stock md5 file for my phone. Odin recognized the device, then failed. Now when I boot up I get the screen that tells me to try to recover with kies. I tried that but the phone is said to be "unsupported". I realize I'm an idiot, but I would really appreciate some help. I tried to find a 4.3 firmware and update with that but I couldnt find one. Thanks!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507253 this SHOULD get you back to completely stock mj7

That worked perfectly, thank you so much!

And don't use that vroot/kingo app to root - go here and use my rooting technique.

one click root 2.2
the original one click root does not work for the 2.2 update via kies. Neither does the Z4root. Tried them both. OCR gave a E:/ not found or whatever error when trying to reinstall packages. z4root pretty much hung then every app i had FC. Odind back to JFD then back to what I had.

i confirm, original one click root does not work for stock 2.2 update

That should have what you need. May not be oneclick but if you have a PC, you will get root.
The new kernel most likely is patched. The new way in is called RAGEINTHECAGE
The new recovery is a PITA. Freaks out with the checking of sigs.

Correct, Z4Root + original OneClick method's do not work.
SuperOneClick however does work. Follow the directions closely. I have attached the program below.
Note, OCLF2.0 does not work for this OTA 2.2 ROM. You must use Voodoo or another lag fix that work with another method and not ext2.
i cannot get the one click root to work.. it gets all the way to the "getting mount path" after its been rooted. but then when i use the busybox app it says that it as not been rooted. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...OH and I had forgot that even after 15min of sitting i unplug the phone and the resistive keys are really slow to respond unless i reboot the device...........

[q] unrooting sgs2 (already on stock rom)

My Goal: set everything back to stock for warranty. (charging system is *%$#ed)
my problem: I am stuck at the unrooting part.
I have read everything I can over and over and yet I still find myself in a predicament. I have restored everything back to stock (I rooted and unlocked my SGS2, but I never used a custom ROM).
I have relocked the device, I have reset everything back to stock. I used the jig to reset the flash counter. I re flashed my secure kernel. Everything checks out, except my Superuser access.
Now here is the part where I am stuck. So essentially from what I read I have 3 options that I can recall:
1 - just re flash my stock ROM to remove root (seems pointless as I have never had to flash a ROM, seeing as I am still on my stock ROM)
2 - unroot using SOC (which failed to work, stuck on step 6)
3 - use Samsung Kies to update. (this also failed, won't detect my phone, and yes it is in Kies mode, no debug)
I am at a loss. I am on the Bell network in Canada, and I am on UGKG2 firmware.
Please let me know if you need more information. Also, I apologize if the answer is in one of the threads. I have been reading everything whenever I can, and just can't figure this one out. thanks for your patience in advance

Well, there is a market app (rootcheck) but it's easy to check yourself, if you dont have superuser in your app drawer you are not rooted.
Let's say, you dont have superuser app and you cannot access cwm recovery = you are not rooted
If I may ask, why exactly is it that you cannot unroot without flashing an original firmware? Why does SOC even give you the option if it doesn't work? Thanks for the timely replies though

soc does work but a lot of people screw up 3 Simple steps and end up with a semi bricked phone.
Flash a stock firmware is probably the more "safe" system. Also allows you to flash latest version that some countries will never receive or receive very late.
Sry my English sux even more today lol

Ok... So let's troubleshoot why I can't get the unroot to work for SOC... I have tried both in and out of download mode. Debugging on and debugging off. Yet the unroot stops at step 6 and does nothing...

I read in another post it is as simple as removing superuser.apk and the su folder on system...

I just flashed the stock rom back. Seems to look quite 100% like it did when it came in the box. Jigged to kill flash counter. I think I am set to send it in Thanks a lot guys.
Following that, looks like for root you just need to download superuser app from market and you are good to go....
Its not so easy as you know.
Removing the superuser apk just removes the superuse app, but then you end up with a semi rooted phone with cwm recovery (that you dont want if you want to go back to stock)

Good im glad you managed to "restock" the phone as you see it is fast and easy with flash of a stock rom

Remove root. Help need please

Hi,
I am rooted on my S3 and all is good. However, my Father also has an S3 and last week he was talked into rooting it by his Grandson. All went well but long story short he was not happy with having a rooted phone so has decided to remove root. He has now done so by following various guides. He used Triangle away which he says went successfully and has used Odin to put the latest stock firmware on the phone which again he says went successfully. I was not there when he did all this but phone seems all good.
Except one thing. He has tried to install a couple of apps he had before rooting. Barclays bank app and Sky Go app. After installation these apps are saying they will not work on a rooted phone, but it's not rooted any more. I have booted into recovery using Volume down, power and home buttons and it says custom firmware / rom, I can't remember exact wording, but it says no. Also in the phone menu where a rooted phone says modified in device status it says normal or whatever it should say. Again can't remember exactly but all looks like no root present.
Anyone got any ideas on this? As I am rooted on my S3 and never un-rooted it yet, I do not know if he should have done something else. Will he have to root again to run triangle away or anything else. Or can this be fixed as the phone is at present?
Thanks for any help guys.
Cheers, Rich

One basic question..are you still able to go into recovery..vol up+power+home..if yes you are still rooted...you need to find your stock firmware and flash it via odin
check if it was a stock firmware your father flashed orcustom ROM o.follow this guide to do it again

Sounds like maybe triangle away didnt properly remove the count, was the firmware he downloaded the official one for his phone? Was it previously branded or anything like that?

Hi,
He has superSu on the phone. Presumably it has downloaded from the play store when restoring the phone. However, he tried to uninstall it which just removed the updates. Couldn't go any further. It is now asking for updates which he has done. But when he tries to launch Super SU it says no apps configured and won't go any further. I think the fact that super su is on the phone, the apps are thinking it is rooted. I am doing this all over the phone so can't see what's happening.
I'm wondering if the way to go now would be another factory reset and when restoring everything, try not to let play store instal super su. Would this be the way to go, or can we get super su off the phone without a reset?
Cheers, Rich
Try uninstalling super su with titanium backup. Then factory reset. Are you sure you have flashed a stock ROM and not a rooted one. This doesnt sound right.

Hi,
Trying to do these things with him over the phone ain't easy. I may just go and get the phone and do it myself.
He does have supersu on the phone and it is working, well it's installed anyway but obviously does not do the root things as the phone is un-rooted. There is an option in supersu settings to remove root but will this work as the phone is not rooted? Question is how on earth do I remove supersu. Do i need to re-root and remove it that way?
Cheers, Rich

This works very well for me

No su binary after flashing stock 4.1.2

I flashed the stock 4.1.2 and a new modem that I found on here to my phone. Ever since then whenever I open the su app it says that the su binary doesn't exist. Problem is I tried to flash the newest binary and it didn't do anything. I also tried to flash using Odin and it messed up the rom. I can't figure out how to get su working again. Can someone help me?

I had similiar issues. It seems others have had the same issue too. If you have installed superuser by ChainsDD then go to the play store and install Superuser by ClockworkMod. Then remove the ChainsDD version. If you have the ClockworkMod version installed and not working then install the ChainsDD version. Worked for me.
Something finicky about this 4.1.2 ROM. Modems and Superuser don't install properly and have to be installed twice.
Edit....supersu by chainfire is actually the version i am using now.
Well op.... what exactly did you flash?
If you flashed stock...and not a prerooted package, you're not rooted. Which is why there's no su binary.
Also, how did you try to root with Odin? If you used an old gingerbread method of flashing a kernel...that would indeed mess up the Rom.

after a million try's I found out how to fix the problem some of the people here give bits of the real way to deal with the un able to start supersu... fist thing use odin to flash philz 15. whatever file that you seen in the thread ( after clean catch and davik and factory reset) then flash the new 4.3 custom rom onto your note 2. Reboot your phone !!!! wen setting up your phone DO NOT set up your google e-mail account when it asks you. Just "skip" everything. NOTE... after you setup the language install from scratch you can always link your google account after everything i tell you to do and phone gets the superSU premissons... okay onto the last step do not open supersu, go to google playstore type in supersu and update it then turn off your phone without opening supersu then boot if everything is back to normal by checking get root checker witch can be downloaded from the app store... btw it was funny how one person said they were afraid of bricking there phone LOL its impossible to brick your phone unless your as brainless as him.. the main problem with jellybean 4.3 and your google account is that it blocks any programs like supersu from before your even able to start your phone. by not sync'ing the google account with your phone it allows supersu to install without GOOGLE blocking it... btw make sure you wipe all catch and select the option clear to flash new rom in philz recovery... one good luck guys this fix took me about 200 trys and 12 hours but its yours now...

Safestrap doesn't root, so there's things that you've done that you're not telling us. How did you root your phone? What else did you do after you rooted?
The "firmware detected issues" usually means that you tried to flash recovery, custom kernel, etc. Did you try to flash custom recovery?

I don't really know what's going on here as you're a little confusing but figured I'd chime in here..
If you were on mk2 then you should just rooted the phone using SafeRoot, very easy and reliable and Safe!
Then you should have installed SafeStrap by simply downloading the. Apk file from that thread. Boooom you'd be all set and ready to flash.
None of that requires Odin. Unless I missed the post where you said you were trying to Odin back for a fresh start??!!
