swapper - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i am using swapper 2 can anyone tell me what swap size and swappiness actually means..? (in simple language)
also for smoothest performance of phone what should be the values ?( i dont care about the sd life )

Swappiness
Swap size should be rather self explanatory. How much space do you want to devote to your swap file?
I don't use the app myself so I can't recommend any values for you. You'll just have to try it out for yourself, based upon what you read in the link I provided.

I also have zram installed so do i relly have to use swapper or does zram solves the purpose.?

Everybody using Traveller DSC has zRAM swap enabled.
zRAM is faster than Swapper because the cache is in device memory, resulting in faster I/O. Using Swapper may help if you need extra RAM, but I/O is slower because you're writing and reading from a slower medium.
I personally don't think Swapper is necessary, especially with zRAM enabled.

well if you explain to me how you added RAM to the phone I'll explain how to do that. (hint: I have no idea. but I also know our phones have 512mb of memory with only 384 usable.)

I think the GPU uses 128MB Ram. If I knew how to free all of it up it would be cool but I don't think its possible.

You can't use the GPU memory for system processes.
Just a heads up, if you ask in our threads, then a developer can actually answer your question, as opposed to the users trying to help you.

(Q)autokiller memory optimiser--Minfree handler setting

I just read about the benifits of minfree handler and got an app named autokiller memory optimiser from the market .
Can anyone tell me wht settings to configure in order to set minimum ram as 280mb?
I tried different combinations but my ram seems to keep going below thevvalue i set..
Sent from my LG-P500 using xda premium
The minfree values are being configured by the Supercharger script. Try the built in modes or make your own minfree configuration. It's a Bourne shell script, not a pdf, just uploaded with a pdf extension.
Thanks but i already got an app that dies the job ..all im wondering is about the correct setting ..

Androids minfree is very advanced, your goal should be a smooth transition regardless of what you're doing. We have 512MB of RAM, that's alot relative to the rest of the O1 hardware.
Most of these minfree apps have predefined settings. Start with a middle of the road setting. If you find your phone lagging due to limited memory chose a more aggressive setting. If regularly used apps are taking to long to load, and performance is otherwise unchanged then choose a less aggressive setting.
My current settings are 2048,3072,4096,7168,9728,12800 = midrange
Common more aggressive settings would be 1536,2048,4096,15360,17920,20480
I'm using optimum (40,50,60)....ill increase later today to see if there's any changes..I'm not using supercharger scripts right now, personally because I never thought I had a need for em but the minfree app is amazing

Could you explain the significance of the values 40,50,60 n what they would help for? ,sorry but im confused..

may i know how do we change the value for minfree if not using any apps or script?
directly edit the below line in init.rc file?
Code:
write /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/minfree 2048,3072,4096,6144,7168,8192

I think that's the line. But i think it's better to use script...

ICS using too much RAM for stability. Back to GB roms?

Hey all, I'm on AOKP ICS 4.0.3 (I think). My vibrant is running low on memory like all the time, and it's running pretty slow and everything's force closing. I know there's a way to swap data/data onto a larger partition, but I don't want anything slower. Should I switch back to GB, or what?
Thanks!
try Team Passion Chimera or MIUI V4 works pretty well
Use ram booster since you can always clean your ram with a red/blue bar which is small but if you touch it, it will clean the ram. You can also use ram swapper which can make ram partitions as large as 2.5 gigs but the only thing that problems it is the bad English and German implemented.

So far I've found Slim ICS to be great on RAM usage. I haven't tried Chimera but I hear good things about it too. You can also try using a program like Autostarts or AutoKiller Memory to fine-tune what apps are running and how much RAM your system will try to keep free.
Super Manager has a built in memory cleanup. You can set the RAM limit to whatever you desire and it will auto-kill tasks and free up RAM when it hits your set limit.
Been using it for a year, since CM7 gingerbread

CM 10 - RAM usage

Hello,
I would like to discuss and ask why the newest rom from cyanogenmod team, cm10, is using a lot of RAM om the galaxy s2.
By a lot, I mean buckets of RAM. If you look at your app management settings you will see that it uses up to 630+ of MegaBytes!! And the phone itself only has about 1 GB of it. Because of this heavy usage of the memory the phone gets laggy, the smoothness of the whole system is terrorized by this heavily usage of RAM memory.
The only option is to reset the phone and then the usage goes back to normal again.
Could someone explain why this is?

There memory leak in CM10. it's a known bug, that's why it's still in beta.
The only way you can fix this is:
1. by using a Ram manager
or
2. By using a patched services.jar for your ROM, made by Dorimanx
Hi,
I have the same RAM problems, i'll try the fixed services. Thanks

[Q] why my RAM is less than it should be?

Hi, I have a Neo V which is supposed to have 512 mb (actually around 490 mb) of RAM, but now it has only 322 mb RAM (not free RAM, whole of it). Is something wrong with my phone or its common?
How can I fix it?
Android takes a portion of the devices phones to do its thing.
Don't worry, it's normal!

So it means that android itself uses about 150 mb of ram and makes it disappear, and again uses another 200 mb of ram and leaves only 100 mb of for user?
I don't think so, cause one of my friends has sensation xe, and his phone had about 980 mb ram, but once, after he took out the battery, it decreased to about 780 mb.
I think there must be a better explanation

There is memory reserved for android core, camera, video recorder,
Sound devices, radios etc.
The rest is used by the other user and system apps.
You shouldn't be worried about less free RAM unless you experience lag.
If android is using your ram it is doing so to ensure better battery and performance and it automatically clears up your ram if you are doing something which needs it.

my Neo V (ics) has 340 mb.
You can try galaxian kernel i think it gives more free ram...

Maybe, I'm not sure.
But why my friend's ram decreased?

I'm using GB right now.
Your whole ram is 340 mb, or free ram?
Also how much can you overclock with that kernel?
Sent from my MT11i using Tapatalk 2
The RAM can not be overclocked, only the CPU can be or other hardware components can be overclocked.
The RAM is occupied only with software applications or services.
As adity wrote you should not worry about occupied RAM if your phone don't have lag.

I don't want to overclock ram, I just want to know where it goes.
Also I need more ram to play the new NFS. Cause it just keeps getting out when it loads more than 4 cars!!!

You can see what applications and services are running on your RAM if you go on:
Settings -> Apps -> Running (you will see the list of running apps) and you can see what processes are in cache by pressing on the bottom: 'Show Cached Processes'
Now, after what you saw all the processes you can chose what to be close as unnecessary processes.
First, I recommend to close unused widgets and create instead shortcuts to settings.
