[Q] Restore stock kernal (MDK) and keep root? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have an S4 on VZW (build MDK) that I rooted and installed CWM on. I believe I used the procedure here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798).
I want to restore the phone back to stock but still keep root and CWM. Can I just flash the stock VRUAMDK kernel with Odin? Will I lose root and/or the custom recovery? I tried searching but couldn't find a definitive answer on whether or not I will lose root by just flashing the MDK kernal on an already rooted device.
If so, how do I proceed? Would I need to start over by flashing the VRUAMD2 prerelease kernel > root > flash VRUAMDK > then custom recovery?
Thanks.

any harm in trying the second option at least?

Yes, you can flash the stock MDK. You'll lose root but can re-root using Loki (MD2 prerelease - > MDK).

Thanks k1, but pardon my ignorance or misreading your response, but don't I use loki to get CWM back, and use the motochopper method to get root back?

Sorry, you're right. I've never had a MDK phone (mine started with ME7) so haven't ever actually used Loki or Motochopper.

so i ended up doing a factory reset then re-rooting...didnt lose the CWM recovery tho
thought id post my results in case it helps someone else out

so you factory reset, then rerooted and CWM was still intact and all is good then?

Verizon S4 - accidently got into Odin recovery

Purchased a Verizon S4 on swappa. The phone was rooted - in the description it said "It has not been updated to 4.3 and is currently rooted on 4.2.2 ME7 baseband" I am upgrading from a Galaxy Nexus I rooted as I run stuff like XPrivacy etc..
I get the phone, install titanium backup and do a full backup. The OTA update notification started popping up as well. Go to reboot the phone and reboot into recovery. (Familiar with doing that n the Galaxy Nexus, so why not? I am a foolish man)
The phone reboots into what I now learn is odin mode and says:
Could not do normal boot.
Odin Mode
Product name: SCH-I545
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Custom
CSB-CONFIG-LSB: 0x30
What has happened and how do I resolve it? Assuming it is fixable is it better to stay where I am OS version wise or accept the OTA update?
Thanks in advance for the help.

The guy who sold you it is an idiot. He attempted to use goomanager to flash a custom recovery. You can stay the way you are and not have a recovery, but if you want it back you should flash a no wipe ME7 Odin image. I did the same thing and is easily fixed

First off thank you for the rapid reply. While waiting, I have been research odin - kinda get what I have to do. First can you point me to the odin image you suggest? Would that file then go into the pda slot and get pushed to the phone? Will I have to reroot?

Here's the odin file for your phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357235
That file goes into the pda slot
After that go into the Dev section and search for how to root your phone.
Do some research and see if staying on an older build like me7 is worth it for you. Either way, you'll have safestrap and root. Everything past me7 has the Knox bootloader and security. Just read up a bit that's all.
Until you decide flash that in Odin... Root it.... and grab titanium backup and freeze SDM and FWupdater and you won't get any annoying OTA notifications.
Edit
The no wipe images are here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259
Maybe you can get away with just doing a no wipe. Try it first.

Thank you.
The no-wipe did not work, but the other did. (Phew).
Phone is now operational and re-rooted. What are my recovery options with regards to backing up this current phone image? Having difficulty getting clockwork recovery to work. (Hesitant probably) Is sage strap a better option?

You can't use clockwork, or any other custom recovery, on your phone. Safestrap is your only choice.

update and unroot

I am on rooted mk2 with safestrap, can i unroot and upgrade all in one shot with this?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735172
as well is it safe to use the one that retains my data while updating to a new release?
thanks in advance

Do you really mean that you have safestrap or are you on a "LOKI" rom? Do you have a custom recovery installed? Although I haven't used this, if you are actually using safestrap, then yes, you can use this.

Yes, it's "safe" if you follow the instructions. I have done it.
It will wipe your phone....... Not the SD stuff but everything else it wiped.
You should backup and before doing this with Titanium Backup or ADB.
This will leave you rooted with MK2 still as your bootloader with the ability to ODIN back to MK2 at some point, if need be.
This puts you off the ranch, but ODIN can get you back on the ranch later.
There is currently no other way to have root on KitKat. So if root is important and you want KitKat, this is it.
Now if you don't care about root, go flash the MK2 No-Wipe found on this forum, then take the OTA.
You need to remove SS to do that though.

How'd you try flashing it that led you to here? If you can get into download mode just use the Odin file... Since I don't know exactly what you did you could try mk2but may not work and you may have to Odin NC5.. Little more info will help

Root for NG3?

Hi, I got my S5 today and out of the box it had NG3 installed, is there a root method for this yet? If so could someone point me in the right direction of where I can find it please?
Have you tried towelroot?
Let us know if you tried it and whether or not it worked please.

I did but idk if I did something wrong, I soft bricked and had to odin back stock with the firmware off of samfirmware site
Kernel build date on NG3 is July 19 so the exploit has been patched. Can't root with towelroot since it needs a kernel build before Jun 3.
What I did was odin flash philz recovery, then went into the custom recovery and went to reboot, it asked me to root and so I did then was able to download su from play store and was rooted

I was on nf6 rooted but then hooked phone to PC and used odin to flash the new bn3 and lost root..and towel root doesn't work so the only way I new of to get root back was flash custom recovery then root it through the custom recovery ...

This phone will never not be rootable. It has an unlocked bootloader, so you can just flash the recovery of your choice, root it from there, then reboot and you're done.

And why is that? Unless Samsung has restricted the bootloader permissions or set a new qfuse to block a downgrade of this firmware version, then the OP could use Odin to install a pre June 3rd build of 4.4.2 firmware, which Towel root can work with.
The previous update was revertible by installing an earlier firmware (confirmed). And NG3 is probably revertible as well (unconfirmed) i.e. it will be revertible unless Samsung took explicit steps to block a downgrade.
Provided that the OP doesn't care about the Knox flag, then the suggestion to install a custom recovery and root from there is valid too.

Thanks.
Yeah, I did it via download mode.
So, what I did, I flash it via Odin in Download mode, and when it auto-reboots, I instantly hold Power + Pwr Up + Home in order to get to Recovery.
If I let it boot up first, it seems that recovery is overwritten by the stock recovery.
All good now =)

Hi guys, no luck here, have the G900T, with the NG3, tried all with Odin, phillz recovery, bootloader+modem, downgrade to NF6 (failed too) or even the one before, nada, zero, just fail and fail resulting soft brick and only through Kies recovery I'm able to have the phone working again!

But as I commented on my first post here, nada, nothing, I have tried the Phillz, the CF-auto-root, downgrade, with the original cable and others, with and without the sim card and/or sd card inserted (all of this with usb debug on in the developers settings) i dont really understand why, everything I try goes to fail and soft brick, only recuperable with Kies and full wipe...
Mine is the MS-G900T with the latest firmware :S is very weird, isn't the first time I root a phone (Galaxy Vibrant and Blaze, Nexus and Nexus 7) and I have flsh a lot of times and I know the for this procedure you have to follow each letter step by step!
I'm start thinking that probably is a locked bootloader... dunno...
this was easy and thank you. i downgraded with the full stock file, no data loss. grabbed mobile pro and im now at ng3 rooted. tho my e-mail will not work. might have to factory reset the device.

[Q] Factory reset on phone with TowelRoot

Thanks

Flash the full wipe nc5 file in Odin. That will give you a clean start
Hey so I did that but I sitlll have Samsung "Custom" a an unlocked icon showing up when I boot my phone. Is that bad?
It's not bad. But if you used Odin and did the full wipe file, there wouldn't be the custom screen on start up. It would be like getting it from Verizon.

This! I don't know how many times I have flashed via Odin but never, when flashing a stock image, have I had it show the "Custom" logo. Not until I did a few things that is.
So is rooting version s4 similar to that of T-Mobile one where you can just use Odin? I'm on 4.4

Stop Lollipop update in reboot?

My S4 was rooted on KitKat and working just fine. I used the Odin App to downgrade, root, and go back to NK1, so no custom recovery.
I should have frozen the update popup but I was going to do the update using Flashfire so I could keep root. in the process of downloading the Rooted Lollipop rom and apparently I accidentally clicked the update button when the popup caught me by surprise. I got the case off and the battery out just as it was booting up to install the update! AH! Is there any way to stop it now? Or am I screwed?
Thanks for the help!
Have you tried an ODIN image? If you've been snooping around recoveries, Safestrap would've been a good option to make a nandroid. Other than that, I'd be out of ideas. AFAIK download mode should be able to be accessed.

Thankyou, I apparently forgot a lot after I researched to root the phone. Yes I got into download mode. I should be able to just take the lollipop rooted rom I was going to use in Flashfire and flash it through ODIN on my PC correct?
you may have to flash nc5 full wipe tar and the pit file in surges thread and then root via towelroot and then flashfire the rooted oc1 rom.
thats what id do.
