My S4 shipped with mi1 however I immediately rooted and frozen sdm
Now since there are safe root with the latest ota, should I update or not? is there any chance that unlocking bootloader on MI1 would be easier than MK2 or they are essentially the same?
This locked phone is really frustrating

I only have a few days experience with this, but in everything I've been reading, there's nothing really past MDK that works with the recovery images...think we're stuck with MK2 until the pros figure it out.

Safestrap 3.7x works with JB 4.3 ROMs so you can Rom away.
Have to agree with equake here.
You're already past MDK, so AOSP-based ROMs are no longer an option while the bootloader is locked, BUT there are several good ROMs available for booting from Safestrap.
Lots of them listed here (try Verizon GPE and HyperDrive first):

Just a side note.. Hyperdrive 12 only works on Safestrap 3.71 which is either mj7 or mk2. And us 4.3 users really only have HD 12 and maybe a couple others to choose from currently. No GPE as that was on 4.2.
Again there are people working to bring more roms our way on 4.3 you can find them in the dev section and Eclipse is gonna be coming soon for us to I hear.

There's Omega, darthstalker, foxhound and Hyperdrive last I checked.
ImO Hyperdrive and Foxhound are the ones to really check out.
Not a huge difference option wise... Hyperdrive and foxhound seem to be tricked out the most. I'm a Hyperdrive man myself.

If you are already beyond MDK, the only reason not to upgrade is no method of root or getting back to stock.
Right now not an issue.
I was rooted on MI1 just went directly to MK2.
No Wipe MK2 -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209
Saferoot -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
GS4 Tether Unlock -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512981
Thanks then i will just upgrade and root
Hopefully the bl gets solved soon

[EDITED BASED OFF FEEDBACK]
Its hard to gather what order and what defines each build for the Verizon Galaxy S4 without a lot of reading. So here is my understanding! Please correct and or add onto this!!!
MDK - Original Build, can replace recovery, rootable
ME7 - 2nd build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, SafeStrap support
MI1 - 3rd build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, Safestrap support (you can install any ME7, or MI1 roms)
MJ7 - 4th build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, Safestrap is not supported
MK? -

MDK - Original Build, can replace recovery, rootable
ME7 - 2nd build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, extensive SafeStrap support
MI1 - 3rd build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, limited Safestrap support due to limited ROM selection* (HyperDrive only?)
MJ7 - 4th build, cannot replace recovery, rootable, Safestrap is not supported
Is it true that you cannot run ME7 Roms on a MI1 device using Safestrap?

No, You can run any ROM on MI1 that suports Safestrap on ME7 & is based on TouchWiz. You would just flash the MI1 kernel modules after you finish installing the ROM.
The only difference between ME7 and MI1 really is that screen rotation is broken on MI1 if you run a custom rom. Also MK2 is the newest build now.

Thanks this helped me greatly. Going to Odin back to MDK after reading this.

I just got a phone sent back from warranty and it's currently running on the MI1 firmware you can still used xposed framework and stuff if i were to root it right? Would you advise rooting now, or at what stage of firmware?
If you're in MI1 I wouldn't upgrade, it's the last build that you can still run safestrap on.

So i can follow the MI1 root instructions and install safestrap , but will this void my warranty? i heard something about how something like a code change triggers a signal on their servers or something,to void warranty but is that with Knox?
Rooting your phone is technically voiding warranty, although there are ways to get back to complete stock. No servers are triggered and the rooting instructions will have you getrid of knox.

yeah, but there are "unroot" methods right? if i did that and had to use a warranty would they recognize it if i went back to stock recovery and unrooted? i've done a bit of research, only a little fuzzy now, jus cuz I started my saturday night a little early :victory: :good:
Last I checked there wasn't a way to use any custom ROMs on a Verizon S4 running MJ7. Is this still the case?

Hyperdrive 12 is really your only viable roms...Some others are coming online. There are couple threads you would need to read. I'm sure some you tube videos are out. I did a guide in general section that gives a good idea of what to do.

Can I go ahead and install the latest MK2 update and still do Safestrap and HH?
If so I'm assuming I'll need to remove root, yes?

Yea you can update to mk2 to be able to take the ota you need to unroot and get rid of any xposed mods you may have and or restore anything you may have frozen using tibu.
If that still doesn't work you may have to Odin back to whatever your Current version is then take the ota
Then root using saferoot method and install Safestrap and you're off to the races.

I could have sworn I seen a thread after I was updating to MK2 how to install HyperDrive on MJ7/MK2 but have lost it now. Do you happen to know of the thread or a tutorial on how to get HyperDrive installed now that I'm running MK2 and rooted with Safestrape installed?

You just create a rom slot then flash the Hyperdrive zip plus the mk2 modules.. Then reboot and you're good.
Be sure you download the Hyperdrive for SS zip.

A lot of development since I first browsed here awhile ago. I'm on 4.2.2 and have no idea what to do.
I think the Eclipse ROM is compatible with SS for AOSP UI. Haven't used it myself though. I think you'd have to update to 4.3 for it though. Don't quote me on that.

What do you mean by you are on ME7.... are you on an ME7 based ROM? or are you on the official ME7 stock verizon build?
If you are rooted and not on an MDK bootloader then you will have to use safestrap and flash a safestrap safe ROM which there are a bunch now.

At this point if your not on an MDK s4 and are on the me7 stock firmware I'd suggest looking into updating your phone to MK2 then root it and install SafeStrap.
There are a lot of ROM options out now for that setup. Not really anymore being made for ME7 I don't believe.
Like they said though read up 1st so you know what you're getting into. And if you do decide to go that route just Odin MK2 on your phone... Nice an easy. This of course if you're NOT on an MDK based phone running an ME7 ROM

Over the past few days on XDA, i've seen some people mention that the beta build 3.72 for ATT KitKat works for I545. Can somebody clarify this for me. Thanks.
Actually NVM. Just for everybody to know, AT&T SafeStrap 3.72 is a confirmed work for Verizon S4.
Didn't work for me on MJ7 4.3.
I needed 3. 71. YMMV.

it works but does have some issues, definitely not support by hashcode at this time as he is trying to work on the formal release of 3.72 for verizon phones
The 3.72 Safestrap recovery works. You can't use the safestrap APPLICATION to manage the recovery once you're on 4.4.2.
I read a couple diff root methods on google do any of them work

As of now guys we all are stuck with a locked and stock 4.4 sch-i605. When or if they find a method i dont know if knox would be a huge deal at that point. I rooted my wifes sch-i747 (att s3) and supersu disabled knox no problem. Seems that the devs may have moved on to other projects. Lets just hope SOMEONE gets around to our device. --waiting patiently--
Considering that Knox is the premier security program to be included on every Android L phone not just Samsung, I doubt the amount of time needed to circumvent is not worth the effort on the 605. Don't hold your breathe that we will ever get root.

the only thing you can do (and idk if everyone can do it) is to odin flash back to 4.3 (MJ9) and then root from there.
unfortunately that doesnt include a bootloader unlock. but then you can safestrap and install /any/ touchwiz rom

Can you confirm if you've actually been able to successfully do this? If you have, then this would be great news for those who want root, but took the OTA up to 4.4.2.

Yes, I did this myself on my phone before I switched out the motherboards.
From ND7, you can flash back to MJ9, and then you can root, and then use safestrap to install certain specific ROMs
I will edit this post if i find a link to a tutorial
Damn I downgraded from ND3, not ND7, my apologies.
Here is the Link anyway http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2752360
I don't have a way to test if there is a way to downgrade.

Cool. Thanks for the confirmation. I knew you could go from ND3 back to MJ9, but I had read somewhere else where someone speculated that you couldn't revert back to MJ9 from ND7 due to the locked bootloader issue... I'm still on 4.1.2 with unlocked bootloader, so I can't test it either.
