Stuck in Reovery - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long story short, I tried to update to Cyanogenmod 11 but things didn't go well. I'm currently stuck in ClockworkMod Recovery (v6.0.1.2). I tried updating ClockworkMod to the latest version so I can flash Cyanogenmod 11 but I can't see the new ClockworkMod .IMG file on my sd card / external storage. I can only see zip files. I'm not sure what to do. Please help!

I think zip files are flashed in recovery and not img files...so if u have a zip file of latest Cwm recovery then just Flash it or if u cant then download .tar file of cwm recovery and flash it through odin...

I found cwm sketchy with backups and switched back to braways. I had cwm touch installed and ROM manager(finally supported) but the issues were too many.
I found using "flash touch recovery" from my tools in aospxxx works nicely.

You are right! I should have been more specific! I know better! The error is: "No applications can perform this action."
Are you sure that's a recovery flashable zip, and not just a zipped up .tar package for Odin?

The file contains a directory called META-INF and recovery.img...
That's for recovery, the Mets-inf folder is the script to write the recovery.img
That's weird, You may try downloading the zip fresh, or if ask else fails grab the Odin flashable tar and use that.

Now, I can run TWRP and run it from there without any ill effects (meaning, a bricked phone!), yes?
Yup.
Given you download the correct file for this device.
If that still fails, which I dunno why I would, it should go without saying The Odin file, will need Odin a pc and a Usb cable

That has the Odin flashable cwm touch file... that version is outdated so after flashing that, you'll have cwm, but flashing a newer Rom zip might end up with a "status 7 error" in recovery.
At that point I'd personally use goo manager go grab the latest version of a cwm zip, that'll be usable in the version of cwm I posted above.

Are you saying I should _not_ use TWRP to put CWM on?
No, it should work, just saying if it still gives you the proverbial finger, Odin is your friend and that version is just the latest with an Odin .tar
So to have your cake (cwm) and eat it too (flash new roms) you'll need to update your recovery from that older version of cwm
So you said you get an error when you tap to install? You should be flashing that zip in recovery like you would a ROM or mod. Is that what you did? After it installs just reboot recovery within twrp and bam!!! You'll have cwm.
Thanks so much for your help...my problem remains, so I may go back to a stock ROM for T-Mobile, since that is my provider, and see if I can solve it... Before I installed CWM, I could sms/mms to my e-mail address...I can't any longer.

CWM recovery.zip

Hi
Does anyone have CWM "recovery.zip" for Gtab 10.1 GT P7500. I can only find md5 and .img files. I am refering the latest version 5.5.0.4.
Thank you
I asked around for this a few days ago and a guy posted a link for me...I can't find it now...darn it!
I read in another thread that you can use ROM Manager to flash your IMG though. If you still have that zipped up, park it on your SD card, open ROM Manager and go "install zip from SD Card". Select it and flash and I think you will be okay...I have never tried it that way though.
Can anyone else confirm this works? Or if you are brave give it a try and let us know!

This is the GT-P7500 CWM recovery 5.504 with Odin3.

There are some issue upgrade ICS 4.0.4 with rom manager.
like boot loop, screen rollong in CWM recovery mode. maybe not affect by Rom manager...
but most issue reply with rom manager installed.
For rolling screen there's a fix, flashing custom bootloader, but causes issues on official ICS at the moment...

Thank you for your files. Just to explain why I need it: since i am a linux user i try to flash my tab using linux. The following procedures did not want to work:
-Adb / Fastboot
-heimdall
-flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img.
The only method to flash the recovery for me is flashing it with the recovery as a .zip file and then rebooting the recovery. In this way I was able to install CM10 Jelly Bean on my tab.
Cheers.

Did you zip it up first? Don't extract it.
You can use Mobile ODIN to install the .md5 recovery if you're rooted
The pro version is on the Play Store or the lite version is free in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899
I don't think that zipping the image solves the problem. As far as I know you have to zip it without compression. It would be helpful if there would be a how-to for Linux in this case.

[Q] TWRP & CWM dual boot? Is it possible?

I made a stock recovery on CWM...then later I got TWRP and I like it, but if I want my old recoveries I can't get to them. How can I create an option to boot one or the other when booting into recovery?
You will have to install CWM recovery back on the phone to install the CWM backups. Just keep the install file handy.
Can he get to CWM Recovery install from his new TWRP that comes up now when he boots into recovery??
I ask this, because I have(had) CWM and used it.. Then I went and installed TWRP.... and now it works.....
BUT my backup(nandroid) is CWM.....
and while using TWRP..I want to goto CWM and press install... and cannot find the CWM.zip (within TWRP)....
Do I have to goback to Odin and reinstall the CWM??? Where would it go??
Put the CWM install zip the same place you would place any *.zip files to install. TWRP should have no issue installing CWM.
thanks Ray... I did do this.. but TWRP doesn't recognize it.. Could it be because there is only the .tar inside the zip?? it's the zip I used for Odin... maybe I should use a different CWM zip.. I know there's quite a few.. thanks....
Yes... Odin files are not usable in recovery.
You need a zip made to use in recovery.
You will find a zip recovery here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526431

The reason that the ROM will not install on your device is because you are trying to flash a ROM in the stock Android recovery. To install a custom ROM you will need to install a custom recovery image such as Clockworkmod Recovery. For a full guide on how to root your device, and install a custom recovery image I would recommend checking out this guide. If have any more questions let me know I'll be happy to help you out.

Choose in recovery install zip from sdcard ==> choose zip from sdcard
Choose the Rom and hit yes
Wait until installation is done!
Do not forget to wipe data/cache/dalvik cache for better experience

Just to clarify have you now successfully rooted your device and installed Clockworkmod Recovery? If you haven't rooted your device and installed Clockworkmod Recovery yet the .tar file that you need to flash in Odin can be found here. Once you have rooted your device and installed Clockworkmod Recovery, the KingOS ROM will be a .zip file you do not need to extract anything from the .zip file simply follow the original flashing instructions you came across for the KingOS ROM. As always let me know if you still have questions.

For the US version I would recommend following this guide to root first, downloading on the rooted file system images .zip files, extracting the rooted system image .tar file and then flashing it through Odin. After you flash the rooted system image you will need to install a Superuser app such as SuperSU.
