Hello,
I broke my SII screen, I can not unlock it or see anything anymore. Obvioulsly, I'd like to access to internal storage *but* I did not activate USB debugging, or install any custom rom.
I manage to got to the device with adb, but as the phone is not rooted, I did not manage to mount internal storage in order to pull files from my phone. I also try Kied but I need to unlock the phone to access files.
I search the web and xda but I did not found a working solution (maybe my keywords were wrong).
Does someone has a solution ? For instance, a way just to be root easily on the phone in order to mount Internal storage ? Any other id ?
Thank you very much in advance. Doms.
PS: I do not want to change the screen as the price for the screen is too high. I do not have access to another SII phone in order to plug its screen on my mother board.
Flash a custom kernel/root the phone/get CWM, then find someone who uses the version of CWM that comes with that kernel to walk you through doing a nandroid backup (how many button presses to get through menus, etc) ?

Thank you for your answer. I'd like to install CWM but is it possible without putting the phone in debug mode ? How can I put the file on the phone as I can not mount storage under adb ?
Thenk you for your help.
Doms.
You can flash a custom kernel via Odin (like Siyah) in download mode, the file you're flashing is on your PC, not on the phone, and this will root your phone and install CWM at the same time. All you need to know beforehand is what Android version you currently have on the phone so you choose the right build to flash, otherwise you'll end up with bootloop.
Search for the Siyah threads on here & read to work out which build you need to flash.

Thank you again. Will try to get in download mode (more difficult than recovery as I need to validate at some moment without screen, adb do no want to do it as the phone is not rooted).
One last question: will it erase the internal storage or not?
Best regards. Doms.
If you have problems getting into DL mode, order a jig, or try the thread in General section where people have offered to lend their jigs to people nearby; might be someone near you who has one (not sure if the thread is still updated, but worth a look).
No, flashing a custom kernel will only do exactly that, replace your stock kernel with the custom kernel & your stock recovery with CWM, nothing else is touched.
Edit - The end result of this will be a nandroid backup, and you'll still have to get your data out of that. The easiest possible way will be to find someone else with an S2, restore your backup to their phone, get your data, and then have that person restore their setup. You can pull data from a nandroid (with just a PC), but it can be a bit fiddly if you've never done it before. We'll cross that bridge once you actually have a backup though.

Thank you for all. I just DL the kernel, will try this evening.
Doms.
You're welcome Good luck, post here when you've flashed it/if you have problems.
Hello,
Just to thank you again. I just have time to try it and it works fine ! Get and remove my 2 Gb of photo from my old phone.
Best regards. Doms.
No worries. Nice work, glad you got your data

Hi All,
Just got my S2 last week. Planning to move to CM7 this weekend. I have rooted the device and am on the Codeworkx kernel. I had a few questions:
1. Is there a problem while flashing via Odin if Debugging is not enabled (I think it is more of a OS feature which we haven't entered when in download mode, so shouldn't matter according to me.) ? I tried to disable debugging, and then went to download mode and Odin did detect the phone, but I did not try to flash anything so if anyone has tried that, your input is more than welcome.
2. The reason for above question is: What if I completely brick my phone (with debugging disabled) and no ROM .zip in the sd storage, how do I get the phone up and running ? I understand that I can flash kernels via Odin, but is it true for ROMs as well ?
3. What's the issue with ROM manager ? Is it recommended to stay away from it for S2 ? I have tried to do a Nandroid backup and it always takes me to the Android robot with a exclamation mark screen. Then I have to reboot and the backup magically restarts and completes successfully. Most people have suggested to use CWM recovery directly, so not sure if I should get rid of the ROM manager altogether.
That should be all for now. I have a jig ready by the way, so am not that worried about the process and plan to do a fair bit of reading before proceeding, however, the answers to above queries would be really great !
Thanks in advance,
Ish
I can answer some of your doubts.
I don't know if you can flash via odin in case you don't have the usb debuggin enabled so I'm not going to say anything about it.
Anyway if something happens to your phone and you dont have any ROM on your sd card but you have CWM recovery installed (which is almost everytime the case) then in CWM there is a mount usb stoage option. With it you can easily transfer .zip ROM files to flash, or even a nandroid backup you saved in your PC.
ABout ROM manager, this is what I suggest you. The first time you flash CM7 don't use ROM Manager (I even tried using it with the codeworkx kernel with no luck). Now, once you are in CM7 it works perfectly and it's really helpful to flash nightlies withouth wiping data (I flash half the nightlies as they are realeased). So the first time you flash CM7 wipe everything (do a nandroid backup first), even wipe /system, /data, cache partition, dalvik cache, so you don't have any problems. THen install zip from sd card and when it finish install the zip file again (just two installs in a row no wiping in beween, trust me, the first time I tried I didn't do that and couldn't boot the phone).
Hope it helps.
EDIT: You can flash stock ROM via odin, there is a thread by infratech were this is explained and you have a list of downloable stock ROMS you can flash with Odin, these are region and carrier specific and you probably will get the one for your carrier. I found the stock ROM for my carrier and I'm from chile, you shouldn't have any problems with that. Well, good luck, CM7 is by far the best ROM I've flashed.
Oh another thing, go for the latest nightly since the battery life is incredibly improved over the RC (or was it stable?) version.
Thanks !

Awesome ! This is exactly what I was looking for. I haven't dived into all the options of the CWM, so didn't know that this feature existed.
Also, many thanks for explaining most of the things in a single concise post, it was very helpful. I'll have to check the ROM flash with Odin, so I will search for that thread and have a go through it later today.
Once I get a hang of CM7, I'll go in for the nightlies as well. And yes, I did read about the CM7 guys revert the status to an RC because of the bugs reported, so will give it a try once I definitely know what I'm getting into .
Thanks again,
Ish.

Well good luck! Tell me if you get any problem.
Tried getting a cyagen 9 ICS rom on my 3g wifi 10.1 tab, forgot to install the clockwork stuff, and now it wont work no more. Think i managed to delete everything on it!? Did manage to install clockwork after via odin but now it find no files on sd and nothing else will work. The sd card will not appear via usb on my pc so i cant put new files in!?
Is there any hope for it or is the garbage can next stop?
Magnar, Norway
Apparently you can see the device with odin - I'd recommend doing a full restock, you can follow the guide at the overcome experience: http://www.teamovercome.net/p7500/?page_id=5
Scroll down on that page until you see the "Re-“Stocking” Yer System…" part and follow the instructions there.
Once you do that your tab should be back in working condition and you'll be able to install CWM and a custom ROM with it. And another piece of advice - always (seriously, ALWAYS) do a nandroid backup of your system before flashing ROMs, especially if you aren't 100% sure what you need to do. This way, if something goes wrong, you can always just restore the backup and you're good to go.
Best of luck!
Why don't you just mount your tablet to you PC through - mounts and storage in CWM recovery? It should work. If not, do what the guy above me said.
jippi
Tried mounting usb but it did not work just got error. Tried the full restock and that did the trick. THANKS
That's why reading helps, It clearly says "Flash the zip using CWM" because modified files cannot be flashed by the stock recovery due to Googles restriction's to avoid breaking their EULA, so the work around would be using a personal made CWM. Problem is stock one is only meant to flash update.zip, to specific folder's, when you install a ROM via stock, it just dumps and replaces everything in one place, It's like getting all your 3 Science subject notes mixed in 1 notebook, you have no idea what is what.
Background
Used many hours to set up phone to my liking. Got a problem with earphone-jack, so i handed it in. I couldnt do a proper backup beforehand, cause this required root access. The earphone-jack got replaced, but they also decided to upgrade my phone to the newest firmware? , deleting everything in the process. I will set everything up again in the weekend, but i do NOT want to do this a third time .
I have searched around for guides, but since i cant find a LQ6 kernel, every guide is telling me to use a different kernel. The best thing would be to root only. Does this work with my phone ?
What i need
Root only
Ability to unroot would also be nice
About phone
Model: GT-I9100
Android v. 4.0.4

Kernel: 3.0.15-1068762 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Wed Aug 29 13:40:41 KST 2012

Other Question
If i get another problem with the phone, backup everything, unroot and hand it in. If they decide to upgrade my firmware again, will i still be able to restore my backup ? What backup program is best to use in your opinion ? I want app settings, launcher settings and homescreen setup to be backed up.
HELP : GOT TWO NEW QUESTIONS
I tried to follow the guide in "theunderling"s signature.
At first i thought the files were supposed to be on the internal SD card, so i put them there and rebooted the phone into recovery. While there i tried to find my files, of course to no luck. I thought that maybe i had to unplug the USB, so i did this while in rec. menu. Still didnt find the files, so i rebooted my phone. Suddenly there were a REALLY LOUD ALARM NOISE coming from my phone. I have never heard that sound from my phone before. It stopped after a while, but has also happened at random times since. WHAT IS THIS ? (To be clear: this came before i ran any of the downloaded programs/scripts/etc).
After this i found an external SD - card and put the files on this. Got root access in a couple of seconds, and everything seemed fine. But now my computer refuses to connect to the phone "couldnt find hardware-ID" or something (Translated from my windows language, so might not be 100 % accurate. HOW TO FIX ?
BTW Thank you all so much for your time. I really appreciate it
1.use the guide in my sig or flash a siyah rooted kernel.
2.a nand backup.
3.you can just flash the firmware you listed back on your phone and that would unroot it.
Download it from sammobile now and keep it on your pc if you need it later(and keep nand backup there also).
4.if you get it back, reroot again and put the nand backup back on your sd card and flash that in cwm.
Dont forget to back up efs folder once you root(keep that on pc).
1. Do as theunderling said, or you can use the PhilZ-CWM6 kernel, which is pure stock based. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270
2. Do a NANDROID backup. Make sure to have atleast 1.1GB available on your MicroSD card. This is done in CWM recovery.
3. To unroot, I believe flashing a stock kernel will do the job, if you only have flashed a kernel. Also, the SuperSU app included in the PhilZ kernel has an unroot option.
Also, backup you EFS folder. And have atleast two backups of it.
Ignore my no.3 as I was thinking you would be installing a rom later.
That rooting method I said also lets you unroot.
Hi. Thanks so much for your answers. When rooting my phone, two problems arose (See original post). Would be really grateful for any input on those.
Never heard of an alarm sound happening-maybe you set alarm/event.
Anyway, what stage are you at.Are you definitely rooted. Is the phone booting as normal and can you access recovery/download mode.

Hi! Did check around for any events/alarms, and im sure its not the issue. Since i couldnt connect to my phone via USB, i tried Kies Air, and the alarm sound started again. Tried a few times, and EVERY time i start Kies air, i will get this sound for 5-10 seconds. It also happened twice when i werent even touching the phone :/
I have tried two programs which require SU - access. Got a prompt when starting them , and they worked fine . Kies Air works fine too btw. (Its the USB - connection that i cant get to work).
Also: For some reason i had SUPERUSER installed from before, and now i cant uninstall it again. Also, when i gave the two programs i tested superuser access, it showed the SUPERUSER icon. (program in big letters)
Just to make it clear again: The alarm sound came after i had fooled around in recovery mode, before ANYTHING where installed.
Youve not answered the previous questions.
You should be flashing a "safe" siyah kernel and backing up your efs folder. You can make a nand backup before that or after.
Just get the .zip file from gohkmoran site and flash via cwm. Then get hktool from play store for your efs.
Then the alarm/usb/pc problems can be looked into.

Sorry, here are some more info:
Download modeI get a warning screen against installing custom os? volume up for install and volume down for reboot. Have never tried DL boot before, so cant say anything about this one
Recovery mode Boots normal and looks exactly like earlier.
Normal Boot Looks like before i rooted. No new programs either.
Could you link directly to which kernel i should use ? I have no idea :/ sry
Sorry,I should have explained a bit more.
Get the siyah kernel file and put it on your sdcard/internalsd
Do the rachmat stuff again.Once you install cwm.zip and su-busybox.zip..........dont reboot.
Install the siyah-s2-v4.01cwm.zip file (whilst your still in temp cwm)you download from his site(google should take you to the file).
Then you end up with a safe kernel and permanent cwm.
Then you can do nand and efs backups

What i did
Resetted to factory settings
Installed cwm.zip
Installed su-busybox.zip
Installed Siyah-s2-v4.1.5-CWM.zip
What i got
No more funky alarms. Neither with kies, or any other program. :good:
Pc connection works if i put it in mass storage mode :good:
Got a CWM app, which i used to take a nandroid backup :good:
Still cant find hardware ID. (So i still cant just connect and open folder)
Thanks so much
Most important is the connection thingy (in case its something "serious" But if you feel in an extremely helpful mood, i got two more questions.
For unrooting To unroot i probably need to:
Flash Stock Kernel (from where ???)
install SU-Uninstaller-Signed.zip
What about CWM and SuperUser. How do i get rid of those 2 ?
Backup
For more advanced backup (backup individual apps etc), I `ve heard about a couple different apps: Titanium Pro and Superuser Elite. Do you recommend one of these?
Try this for your hardware problem.I never use kies as its ****
You can use this,or go to sammobile and flash xwlpx to get back to stock.
You can use titanium backup to backup your apps and also "remove" crappy system apps etc(theres a thread that guides you what to/what is safe to remove).
And get your efs backed up.

I dont like Kies either, but wanted to fix my problem of 2 reasons
- I was afraid it was a symptom of something serious
- MDP mode without kies is nice to use when you only need to upload a few files to your phone on the go
WELL, KIES WAS THE SOURCE OF MY PROBLEMS. When i uninstalled Kies - drivers, it worked perfectly.
Have taken backup of my efs now (with HC-Ktool, which i assume u meant ), so now i will start setting up my phone to my liking. Thanks so much :highfive:
So basically got everything i came for
But, hmm still unsure if i will get completely unrooted phone from flashing stock kernel and removing SU. Wont the CWM that came with Siyah still be installed ? Can i uninstall this normally afterwards ? Or can i uninstall it before i remove superuser, and then use the CWM -booter thingy to get rid of SU ?? Hmm sorry for being such a noob.

I am sure that flashing a stock kernel will unroot your phone, kill me if I am worng . (I am noob also.)
CWM will be removed once your on the stock kernel.
Once you set up your phone, make a nand backup of that.
You want to able to use usb so you can use Odin, especially if something goes wrong flashing something and you cant boot phone, or into cwm.
Flashing a stock rom unroots the phone. For warranty, you go into download mode and check binary is at zero, and official firmware is at yes.
New here. (also apologies for probable duplicate topic)
I've rooted a phone in the past with no problem. This time round was with an S2, and I flashed an insecure kernel on it, got a green pass on Odin however it's now stuck on the boot screen with the yellow triangle.
I can access recovery mode and download mode but it will never boot properly, always stuck on the yellow triangle. What's the best course of action from here?
Need a lot of help with this guys as I'd rather not have a bricked phone ><

Maybe because you wiped all data....so...there's no ROM to boot up to.
Try flashing one via Odin

Wiping data doesnt wipe rom , It just wipes appdata, ie settings etc. All that happens is a factory reset so when you next boot its back to default. For example you would need to re-enter google account and re-install apss either manually or from a backup.
You can only wipe rom by formatting system partition.

Thought you had me in ignore.
So there's no way you can wipe your OS via recovery? Good to know that, it's like ROM over ROM then. The new one clears the old one.

I did have you on ignore but I still see little boxes saying this comment has been ignored etc which was actually more annoying so I removed ignore.
Yes you can wipe OS via recovery but only by formatting system/deleting partition etc. All the "wipe" options do is remove files that have been created by rom like app settings/cache etc.
Your confusion was probably also the reason why you made a big thing in a previous topic about you trying to avoid wiping data, because you thought it wiped rom? :silly:
Wiping data/factory reset in cwm is one of the best ways to get rid of system issues, Its basically like doing a clean install of Windows on a PC. After you have wiped you can simply restore your needed apps from a backup using Titanium Backup. Other things like sms/mms etc can be also backed up easily and contacts will be synced via Google account.

hum...okay.
I actually know what Factory Reset does, I mean..."factory"..."reset", kinda......gives it away.
And yes, it made sense to me that you could wipe the ROM you are on before installing a new one, just like the format c:/s days in win98.
You learn something every day, speaking of which, how come no one recommends noobs to root their device with exynos abuse? It's because they're noobs and wouldn't be able to handle/understand the exploit?
I still don't do factory resets because I don't need to, and I avoid needing to perform it.

Thanks for the reply Figured if someone was willing to help me I'd give them the information they wanted.
Have Samsung Galaxy S II (GT-I9100) (couldn't tell you what "variant" it is). I was following this guide. It told me to get an insecure kernel from here. The guide said it didn't really matter which kernel I picked so I picked the first one (GT-I9100_BGKF5_insecure) and used Odin to flash it. Got a green pass and the phone began reboot but it's now stuck on the yellow triangle (the warning message that you've flashed an insecure kernel).
I couldn't tell whether there would be compatibility issues as the thread just seems to be one big list of kernels and nothing else. AFAIK the phone was running ICS.
Looking at the replies, I keep seeing factory reset. Is that a liable option to restore my phone back to its original state. I don't care as long the phone works again. If not can someone run through how to fix my predicament I heard if I can access download and recovery mode I should be able to fix it.

Of course, you're not bricked yet.
Before trying your back up, why don't you flash a stock ROM via odin and take a long breath?
This is JB leak.
These are ICS, look for 4.0.3 unbranded.

Don't worry, your pc WILL see your device.

Dear xda community,
I have searched wide and far through the forums but have not found the perfect solution to my problem:
I have an non-rooted Samsung Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100) stuck in boot after my stock FM radio app crashed. Boot stops in the flashing logo and won't go on from there.
Cache wipe in recovery mode doesn't help, but I do not want to factory reset without any attempt to save personal data from the internal memory.
I have tried to access my phone through adb, but cannot use the pull command to get anything off (e.g. /sdcard/, where it just tells me that 0 files have been found and 0 transferred).
Kies won't connect either.
Some forums suggest to root and flash a custom rom, but this process seems a) to involve factory reset, b) seems risky without access to anything above recovery mode, or c) seems risky because I don't know my exact kernel version to pick.
All I can get via "adb shell cat /proc/version" is this:
Linux version 3.0.31-889555 ([email protected]) (gcc version 4.4.3 (GCC) ) #3 SMP PREE
MPT Thu Jan 31 14:48:54 KST 2013
I am a bit unsure whether the kernels and roms available would fit because I had to send the device in earlier last year on guarantee and got it back with a firmware jellybean update, so it's not the originial stock kernel.
I found the exact same /proc/version output in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/help/help-cf-root-galaxy-s2-tanks-t2139040) , where they recommended to use PhilZ Touch v4.22 + new XWLSD.
I am unsure if this would be a good solution for me as well even though I don't know my build number or baseband version.
Is there a way to find these out via adv? are they important? Will I brick my phone if I try to install this kernel without knowing more?
Any help very much appreciated!
(I know there's a hell lot of rooting/flashing tutorials and posts out there, but hardly any are about how to save the internal data on original unrooted phones, or how to get access to the internal memory from adb or similar on unrooted phones when they are stuck in boot. If at all possible, please give me some cues on how to fix this safely, I'm not heavy-handed with tech but have not done any rooting/flashing of phones before)
You're overthinking this.
Best option is to flash stock firmware with Odin/in DL mode & hope that fixes the problem; it's a coin toss - half the time this will fix it on its own, half the time you'll still need to do a factory reset after flash as you'll still have bootloop. There will be no way around same despite your obvious aversion to doing a reset if just the flash doesn't fix it.
Obviously if it does work w/o reset, no data loss. Only way to find out is 'suck it & see' (I.E try it).

In that case, how do I pick a right firmware? Sorry if that question sounds lame, but the thing is just that I've read a gazillion warnings to pick the right kernel version or get a softbricked phone, yet I do not seem to be able to retrieve the kernel ID (the couple of characters/digits) that seem to be important for this. In other words:
is it
a) ok to just go ahead and flash e.g. any Jellly Bean Stock Rom for the GT-I9100 or the Philz Recovery Rom mentioned above (in that case, which version)?
b) or do I need to know more - and if so, how can I find out which ROM to use - with only adb working?
Any stock rom will do, but if you intend to stay on stock choose a stock rom for your country/carrier (not 4.0.4).
Forget ADB (re: my comment about you overthinking things), it's irrelevant.
Flashing instructions are in thread stickied near top of Q&A titled 'Flash stock firmware', if you have problems with the flash find Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in General & go through the troubleshooting steps in a methodical way (hopefully you won't need that though).
It seems to me like you're complicating your life.
You can flash any rom stock through odin and hope that phone doesn't stuck on boot.
If, however, does not start, you always have to do wipe data that is the only solution available to you.
This teaches you to make backups of everything you don't want to lose, obviously with root and custom recovery (nandroid backup).
P.s. If your phone does not turn on you cannot save anything, not even through adb
Thanks for the quick replies everyone, in this case I will just go ahead and try my luck.
Update: Indeed Philz Recovery worked like a charm (see link first post). I was able to get a full backup of my data with this to external SD before wiping the device. After wipe/factory reset, everthing booted normal again.
Trying to restore the data turned out to be a bit more tricky. Even though I restored only data, not system files, it returned to the previous boot problems.
In the end, I extracted the backupfile on my PC, first concatenating the *.tar.a, *.tar.b etc files using windows command prompt "copy /b XXX.tar.* XXX.tar" (replace XXX with tar archive names, e.g. "copy /b data.ext4.tar* data.ext4.tar"), then I could open and extract them with 7zip, copying the extracted backup to my external SD.
Finally, I used ES Explorer (with Root Access activated in the app settings) to cherry pick and copy my calendar and contacts (/data/data/com.android.providers.calendar/ and /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/) and some selected app files to the phone. After a restart, I had restored these and parts of my apps, although most of their settings were gone. It seems like I missed out on where these were stored.
Anyway, I hope this will help anyone with the same problem and device to get things going again without losing their data!
Thanks again everyone here and in the other threads I read over the last days.
