Having never used Android before, I bought my first Android device last month (Xperia Play) and installed it on my HP TouchPad. Of course, I had never used the Android Market before either, so when I made a test purchase from the Android Market I was surprised to see it go through without ever asking me for payment details. I got an email receipt to my Google account saying that I could get a refund in a certain amount of time, but I still had no idea what card or account it had been charged too. Eventually, I found that $5 had been deducted from my Chase checking account, presumably from my debit card. That's strange because I have not used Google Check Out or anything Google-related since the last time my check card was replaced, so I can't imagine how they got the payment details. It's on my twin brother's family plan, so it was not charged through the cellular provider either. To make matters worse, I no longer used that account and it caused an overdraft (corrected)
Now, I checked every account and settings screen I could find in the Android Market app but I could find nothing about payments or payment methods. I logged in to market.android.com on my PC and similarly could find nothing. I checked their help and FAQ questions: Nothing. I searched here: Page after page of irrelevant results. ARGH!
I'm ready to make more app purchases (Titanium Backup Pro, PdaNet, etc) but I only have enough in that account to cover the bills that I pay from it and I can't allow Google to withdraw on that bank account again. How can I switch payment methods so that it will not automatically bill the wrong account AGAIN?
Edit: "ARGH!" again. I found a thread about billing to your AT&T account being added and there was a screenshot distinctly showing AT&T billing as a drop-down in some kind of checkout page in the Market app. Thinking I must have somehow missed it, I installed Titanium Backup and then chose to purchase the key. Once again there was NO checkout and it just went ahead and purchased without ever giving the option to provide a funding source. How on Earth did they ever get my payment details and how to I manage them?!
I immediately canceled/refunded the order.

Thanks, but I already looked for Google Checkout options in the logical places last month and found nothing, but I shouldn't have to even look: It is illogical that they would use the service without my permission and without informing me. Even so, I checked Google.com>More>Even More while logged in and searched in the page for "Check" with no results. I am logged in. On the Google page I only have search related configuration options.
OK, so I tried to go to checkout.google.com MANUALLY and it forwarded me to "Google Wallet," which I have never used before. I had to agree to all kinds of things just to get in there and delete the card, so it's like they were holding it hostage until I agree. One thing is for sure: I NEVER agreed to automatically be charged through the Android Market. *NOW* will I finally be prompted for payment options when I chose to buy an app? I'll find out soon.
They are getting pretty sloppy. First, I got slammed by over $30 of texting fees because their Google Voice app said it was receiving the messages in the messaging app instead of saying that it was forwarding them to my mobile number (Grrr... without even a warning about potential fees, they worded it exactly like the feature I was looking for: like iMessage and BBX or SMS GV Extensions on iPhone integrating with the native text messaging app).
The fact that there is no mention of GCO/Wallet anywhere on the Android Market options or help pages is a serious oversight.
Oh yeah I forgot that Google check was changed to Google wallet recently. I know when I buy an app it tells me what card it is charging it to before I buy it
same here. I didn't start using the Android Market until the 10 cent deals came out. It asked me if I wanted to charge it to my cell provider or enter a new credit card. Each time I make a purchase I have both of those options, though my credit card info is saved with Google Wallet or what ever it is. Then I have to manually enter my pin. I wasn't sure what this was at first, but tried my phone lock pin and that was it.

Moving to Q&A
Recently my payment options has changed from my mastercard directly to google wallet.
The issue is, that i didn't have money inside the card to link the card and google didn't accept the card in the first day.
Anyway, i fixed that, i linked my card on my google wallet and it reduced 1.00€.
I bought an app from my pc directly and it installed within seconds on my pc.
But, when I'm trying to buy anything from my phone i end up with payment error. I checked all settings and there are no payment options on android market application, so its from google checkout. Though i successfuly bought applications through my pc.
Whats wrong >.<

What is Google Wallet?
http://www.google.com/wallet/what-is-google-wallet.html
What do I need to know before I start rooting or flashing ROMs?
The main thing you want to know is that Google Wallet is a pain for constant flashers. It may turn you off completely to being a flashaholic. I'll explain:
Once you add a Citi Mastercard or load funds from any CC to the Google Prepaid Card, it is bound to the device ID, not your Google account! This ID changes every time you wipe data, flash ROMs, and Reset Google Wallet. Meaning if you don't get the right information, all the money on your Google Prepaid Card is gone when you Reset Google Wallet.
So what do I need to do?
For Citi Mastercard holders: You will have to call Citi Mastercard to have your card removed. It can take 24-48 hours to remove. You can check on the status after 48 hours by calling Citi directly at (877) 762-2989. You just add it back on after it is reset. It can be annoying and not take it but it will work after a while.
So to remove the card from the Google Wallet app, do the following:
1) Open Google Wallet
2) Enter your pin
3) Tap "Payment cards"
4) Tap your Citi Mastercard.
5) Remove
Google Prepaid Cards: This one is a bit trickier. Your funds will NOT transfer if you flash automatically. Meaning, it is not bound to your Google account. (STUPID I KNOW!) You will need to know a few things.
Your Google Prepaid Card User ID (prior to flashing)
Your Google Prepaid Card User ID (after flashing)
Your Balance on the card.
Your Google account linked to the account (FOR WHAT?!!?!?!?!?! I don't know)
Write down your Google Prepaid Card User ID.
1) Open Google Wallet
2) Enter your pin
3) Tap "Payment cards"
4) Tap "Google Prepaid Card"
5) Wait for your User ID to load and then tap "Show ID" to see your entire ID number. Write this down BEFORE FLASHING OR CLEARING DATA.
If you have both, remove them both with the instructions above before proceeding.
DO NOT CONTINUE WITHOUT READING EVERYTHING ABOVE! YOU CAN POSSIBLY LOSE FUNDS! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Once you have removed your Citi Mastercard or have all the information needed for your Google Prepaid Card User ID, you need to then reset Google Wallet or you will break your Secure Element on your phone and Google Wallet will never work again.
WARNING: THIS WILL RESET EVERYTHING AND ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR DEVICE IN TERMS OF GOOGLE WALLET! IF YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR ID YET THEN DON'T
To Reset Google Wallet do the following:
1) Open Google Wallet
2) Enter your pin
3) Tap your Menu Button
4) Tap Settings
5) Tap "Reset Google Wallet"
Once you do this you are good to go and flash a custom ROM. You can wipe data, cache, dalvik without an issue.... till you have to get your money back.
After you have set up your new ROM, do the following:
Citi Mastercard Holders: You have to call back Citi Mastercard to make sure it has been reset and if it is, you can try to add your Citi Mastercard back to your Google Wallet account like you did before. It may take a few tries. If you have issues adding your card, call Citi's Tech Support, NOT GOOGLE OR MONEY NETWORK!
Google Prepaid Card: First get the Google Prepaid Card User ID on the NEW ROM.
If you are too lazy to scroll up it is:
1) Open Google Wallet
2) Enter your pin
3) Tap "Payment cards"
4) Tap "Google Prepaid Card"
5) Wait for your User ID to load and then tap "Show ID" to see your entire ID number. Write this down BEFORE CALLING MONEY NETWORK TO MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER.
Once you have this information, you can call Money Network to have them transfer funds. Their number is (855) 896-0693.
Make sure to tell them you switched phones, you go the User ID for both phones and that you Reset Google Wallet on the old phone and cleared data.

What a headache. I don't know if it will stop me from flashing like crazy but I doubt it! GOOD LUCK!

I hope this helped you. If it has, please click thanks!
After I installed a different rom I can no longer access Verizon in app billing. Before I was able to purchase apps from the market and have them billed to my VZW monthly bill. Now for some reason it doesn't show up, I only can add credit cards or redeem codes. Anyone know how to fix this? Do I need an updated market apk or something?
hi,
I am from India and I own a debit card from a nationalised bank (syndicate bank). The google play store never accepts my debit card. It always says invalid debit card or trouble authorizing your debit card, please contact your bank. I very much know that my debit card is valid and i have used it for transactions. Am I missing out on something here? Preferably would be great if some indian user on this site can help me out.
