[Q] i9300 hardware repair help, please - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've just been given two non functional i9300's for free, to see if i can repair them.
both have cracked screens, one appears to have water damage.
i've tested with spare batteries, and neither powers on, nor do they show up in windows when connected by USB.
whats the bare minimum we need for these to power on and be detected by windows, so i can determine if the logic boards in these even work?

Cracked screen and water damage will not cause the phone to not boot up. Unless the water damage is severe, it will still boot up. It appears to me tat it is either sds or motherboard.

the previous owner has disassembled them, and they had no batteries. using one from an i9305 has had no luck so far, basically just looking for advice and suggestions as where i should proceed.
if it was a PC i'd be done in seconds but fixing a phone i didnt pull apart in the first place is challenging.

yeah thats the same situation i'm in.
at the very least, one of the boards is showing 5W of power consumption when connected to a wall charger (which is connected to a power meter).
since the battery is charging, that implies something is working - but i'm getting nothing on the screen and not hearing sounds out of the speaker.

i cant tell which board came from which shell unfortunately, however this board/battery is charging in the water damaged shell, but showing 0W in the 'clean' shell.
backwards to what i'd expect. maybe this ones just a dead screen, and the other has some more serious, but better hidden damage.
edit: the 'water damaged' shell + board had a red charging LED show up, that went away when i hit the power button. didnt power on after that/the touchscreen buttons dont light up when touched.
edit 2: with my good battery the LED went blue and the backlit buttons lit up. i think this hardware combo works, and i just need a new LCD - will trst it out with MHL and see if that works...

looks like this combo just needs a digitiser + LCD, despite getting an image on screen i cant control it in any way.
thanks for the help jelly, you at least helped me think this one through and come up with viable testing methods.

so using that test above (wall meter then MHL) i've confirmed that one board works, one doesnt. in either frame one board lights up the LED and the other doesnt draw any power or give any sign of life (assuming this is the water damaged one)
i've got one of everything (front + back camera module, speaker etc) literally all im missing is a LCD screen.
to ebay i go, this has been a good day

this just got hilariously fun.
i ended up temporarily using the LCD + digitiser from my i9305 (it works but hte back panel cant be closed) to sync up a bluetooth mouse to the phone.
now i can use it as a bluetooth controlled HTPC

ok i was able to make it work again but with the same problem as before
the battery is not giving the correct readings and i cannot charge it normally.
i was cleaning the USB Connector but it was not enouge..
the battery & the MTP icons are still ON and if i restart the phone
the problem remains the same (Yellow Tri) untill i connect the charger and the phone is up again..
one more thing is that the phone appears to be slow then usuel..
:| i have no luck with cell's am i? :\
That prob. Means your phone is too hot or battery is too hot. Phones shut down if they get too hot to protect themselves and it will do the same if the battery gets to hot. Since your phone is running slower I would say its your phone overheating. Try it with another battery and see if it works. And also remember water damage isn't just water it can also be caused by sweat, steam, and humidity. I know it sounds dumb but even taking the phone in the bathroom to listen to music while you shower will cause it too. Your mirror gets steamed up and steam is moisture. If another battery doesn't fix try to get it warranty replaced.

The outside of your phone maybe cold but the inside can be hot. Or it could be the temperature gauge inside the phone malfunctioning.

Hi,
I had the same problem, basically my case was that I had flashed a Frankenstein firmware and since then the problem had started for me. Once I moved back to the stock firmware, the issue is completely resolved.
Having said that, it did not occur to me immediately after I moved to a Frankenstein firmware, but happened after some time.
So if possible, try to move to stock firmware and see if the problem persists.
Thanks,
Vishal
I have also that problem with some custom roms, phone is old like 5 month, he was go randomly to crazy mode yellow battery , MTP won’t shut down and you can’t turn OFF phone. My friend have SGS2 and we have try to replace his battery but that didn’t help, in the end I have flash CM9 and now for one weak I don’t have that problem.
I think best advice is to take phone to service.
br
The problem gone by its own...i wonder how

my battery did the same thing, randomly works now tho?
But all i can say is, once the battery was 100% charged, I unplugged it then plugged it back in, It then took more charge when i did. Overcharged?

It was probably moisture shorting usb or lower motherboard usb connects to. This phone has that issue it seems and really miss slider cover from sgs1.
Solutions?
Cleaning usb port for obstructions.
Send to service.
Replace board by yourself. I did it just few days ago as I'm not under warranty. Take all precautions that you know what you're doing. Otherwise see above or below.
Put in your girls pantyhose and then in rice container to draw out moisture or original box sealed with some of those silica packets electronics come packaged with.
And yes sometimes it clears by itself as the moisture evaporates and if you're lucky that the power controller chip was not damaged permanently.

Same problem here .. If I turn off the phone is hard to start again. It does not recognize USB. Charged battery alert, not turned off. I thought it was a software problem and I returned to stock without root, but the problem remains. I start to believe it's a hardware problem (perhaps the USB port)
I'm thinking for a service, but I can not reset the flash counter, I have JIG and I'm not good with soldering .. I think in this occasion will have to pay ..

Confirmed, moisture in the USB port, had a green color in the connection
I think i'v found an temporary but long run solution
it work'd for me just fine!
1.Take a flat screwdriver and coat it with a thin layer of cotton wool
2. Insert the screwdriver at the bottom of the USB connection just below the "tooth" and bend the "tooth" gently upwards.
3. Use the USB cable to check that tooth bending too much and to check that the computer recognizes the connection.
that's it!

Touchscreen Calibration Issues (You Might Have This Issue As Well) [Updated 1/4/2012]

Test Protocol By N11:
Navigate to Settings/About Tablet/System Firmware Update
Try to tap "Check Update" while charging and while unplugged
Report any differences. Also report your version information.
Test Protocol 2:
Download "Touch Test" or "Multi-Touch Benchmark"
Report any differences while charging and while unplugged. Also report your version information.
Edit 1: I have discovered that this only occurs when the device is charging... Weird. Can anybody else try this? Download "Touch Test" and play around with in while charging and unplugged.

In addition to what you stated, mine wouldn't even register anything at random intervals and in random spots on the touch screen. has something to do with the voltage of the charger my epic 4g touch did the same thing with the wall adapter it came with started using a different charger from my old phone and problem went away...... I would be curious if all stock wall chargers for the prime do it or just some?
This is interesting. I had a Dell laptop with a defective charger and the touchpad would throw the mouse all over the place while it was charging.

I think it has something to do with the backplate tingling/improper grounding,
throwing some static at the touchscreen grid making it think its being touched elsewhere.
See howfar off the touch dot is at various places on your screen.
You should be able to figure out a trajectory to where it is making "contact".

Exactly, try turning around your charger (so turn it by 180°)
I had something similar happen on my DInc when I plugged it into the wall and car inverter using my brothers Motorola cable and charger. The phone will just go wonky with the touchscreen. As soon as I unplug it everything would be copacetic. Try another charger and or cable.
So i wonder if its more likely that my prime isnt the problem and my charger or home wiring is wonky
I noticed this yesterday where I could not close browser tabs. Eventually I got the tab to close, and thought this was just some dust on the screen or something.
I have not had any issues before and use it a lot while charging (its technically my wife's so she gets to run the battery down and I get it after since I sit close to a outlet), and I was not having issues at all until the last firmware update (not that it is necessarily related).
I will try and run some more tests this evening and see if I can produce. I would think if this was a hardware issue I would have run into it sooner.
Did anyone have this issue prior to any of the latest firmware updates?

I'm honestly not sure. Prior to my device arriving yesterday, I found out about the newly released root method for the latest OTA so I upgraded as soon as I turned on the device. I do not have a benchmark for comparison.
I will be trying to invert my charger and I will also be trying a different location across town to see if maybe my electrical wiring in my home is causing voltage noise/grounding issues.
I have a solution:
Code:
if (Device.isCharging) { Screen.Touch.setOffset(-5,-10) }
done...

Or maybe that's in there and was meant to be commented out...

Yup... So I just may have *REALLY* bricked my GN2

Did an ODIN restore to Stock Image w/root & bootloader unlocked preserved .
SUCCESS
Booted up and did minimal config. Checked email.. Surfed the web.... made a few calls and txt.
SUCCESS
Booted ClockworkMod Recovery and began install of JB 14....
HANG
Tried powering on the phone......... nothing
Tried CWM Recover boot... red light blinks every few seconds
Tried Download mode w/ODIN... nada ... faint red light blinks every few / 10 seconds.....
Battery was at 80% or so when I started CWM Flash.....
And there ya go... Glad I have insurance ?
Anyone got any ideas before I have to take a walk to the store and pickup a loaner? LOL
Just as an FYI:
This had NOTHING to do with the specific ROM..... It was some hiccup during the flash process in CWM... I've switched back and forth between every rom on here w/o a problem back and forth several times. I just must have angered the flash gods at some point today because all I get is a faint red flash on any power attempt (much like my Xyboard on a completely dead battery)..
I do however wonder if during the day while TMO ported my number from VZW that Verizon didnt send some death / self destruct code to my phone LOL

Completely cant find my 300K Resistors Off to RadioShack I go
Anyone around brooklyn with at RIFF or JTAG box?
I ended up going to my Local VZW Store (still under active contract for a few months) despite using TMo.
Told them I flashed back to Stock image.... then was loading a ROM again to remove bloatware and it went bananas on me. They looked up my acct ; I have been paying more then $200/mo for nearly 4 years now........ The rep was really knowledgeable about 3rd party ROMS/Rooting and said he would send me out a new phone tomorrow under extended warranty. Also said they just send it back to Samsung who just hardware flashes it and sends it ous as a REFURB unit since it was in literally MINT condition (Otterbox Defender) since Day 1.
Moral of the story: Was honest and expected nothing other then a "sorry buddy... you are out of luck" .. told him the truth and got a replacement (he even switched my titanium grey to white on the replacement). Didn't file a bogus insurance claim and the rep who is an asst mgr at the store was an ACE. If their costs monthly weren't so high I would be inclined to stay with VZW; but a few lines for me the wife and my kids on there is giving me an unnecessary beating to the tune of 2X my TMO costs.
For all the misgivings about VZW ...... I have to say its not the company........ Its being lucky enough to get a rep that isnt a hardon and appreciated me not giving him BS.
+1 VZW assoc mgr man.

Def was too weird AND out of left field. I even pulled out the soldering gun and sacrificed 2 usb cables and made a 300K Ohm and 301K Ohm jig and still nothing. Short of a full on JTAG / RIFF / Medusa attempt I don't think there is hope for this thing.Emmc sudden death seems possible at the most inopportune time; but it may just as easily be a power circuit failure based on what I am seeing with the meter and three batteries.
Thanks for the story, hopefully I don't have to experience it anytime soon

USB Cap

Dear Big Phone Niche Market Like Minded Friends,
I have had my Ultra for about a week now. I love it! With non-removable battery, I have formed a habit of plugging in my phone wherever possible...at my office, at home, first thing I do when I enter my car. If I keep a count, it would be like more than 20 times per day. Each time, removing and reinserting the USB cap.
My concern is whether that USB cap is going to fall off soon? Anyone know how sturdy or resilience that little string that connect the cap to the phone?
That string seems to be such 20th century solution, no?

You should check your phone. Charging 20 times per day is insane. The phone should get you at least 4 hours of screen time. Assuming you don't do anything else but use your phone since you love it so much, you should only be charging a maximum of 4 times a day assuming charging takes 2hours since your using the phone at the same time. 20 times a day means your phone is probably always plugged in already.
I suggest having it exchanged.

Oh no, there's nothing wrong with the phone battery.
I just have a habit of pluging in my phone when ever possible to keep it as much charged as possible.
Just in case, I'm stuck in a broken elevator for hours, I can play Candy Crush longer.
I didn't have this habit with any one my previous battery removable phones.....it just all started with the HTC One (non-removable battery)

Just ordered to USB magnetic charging cable via Amazon. Will get them soon, and report back. It would have been cool if Sony included these.

It only cost HK$50 (US$6.4) to replace the cap here in Hong Kong's Sony repair centre, so its pretty in-expensive.
this is why I bought the charging station before the cellphone itself !!!

I got my magnetic cable today. It's a perfect solution. Thank you for suggesting it.
Out of curiosity, what would happen if I charge the phone simultaneously using both the magnetic connector and the micro USB?
(a) The phone would implode, vaporize, and generate a wormhole causing a temporal shift
(b) The phone will be charged up faster
(c) The phone will be charged up at regular rate
Thanks in advance.

Alright, i lied. I have no idea what'll happen The question now is; do you dare?
You know what? I'm gonna pass on this one. I'll let CERN physics lab have a crack at spawning the wormhole first.

[Q] Hardware Fault: Device thinks its charging (volt sensor)

So for the past 4 days, my device often wont stop thinking its charging. So what I mean is that I'll plug it in (USB or Magdock) and it will charge normally. I'll unplug it, and the battery symbol and LED will still says its charging.
Once this happens, it will only charge off the magnetic dock.. So plugging in USB wont work, and no charge will occur. Its mental eh!
Its happened since I started using the magnetic dock.
What i've noticed is that reversing the magnetic charger cable, will make the device realise its not on charge. My laptop will also display a message saying that the... " USB device has been disabled due to excessive drain"
so somethings not right.
EDIT:
I have unlocked my bootload,
rooted,
flashed stock Sony ROM (with modified kernel)
flashed CM10.3...
Still doing it. Most def. is a hardware fault... SOB!

have flashed FTF's: .510 / .532 / .537 and they all do it.
So stands to reason its not software...
Sony states that you shouldn't use the magnetic dock with USB ports.
Try to reboot, for every small problem I've had. a reboot fixed them all.
Without effect firmware update

me too !!
In my case,If you attempt to reboot, it must be "forced shutdown" before going any further in the repeat of the SONY logo.
I was out to repair to give up.

I assume you mean use both mag dock and USB to charge at the same time..
Yeah thats probably not a good idea. Too much volts going in.
I haven't done that, but there is clearly a problem with my device. Looking into a replacement from the store.

With the galaxy note this would happen if the USB port got any dirt in it. First place to check if you experience this. Take a cotton bud and some pure alcohol and while the phone is off, gently clean the pins then leave it to dry for a few minutes before turning it on. Dirt or dust can cause the pins to short and think it's charging.

Yeah that was the first thing I tried. However it happens on both USB, and MagDOCK, so its not a dust issue. There must be a hardware sensor that detects amp flow into the device, and must be a fault when amp flow is reduced/stopped.
ok so update.
Have sent my Ultra back to Hong Kong from where I purchased it. I'm guessing hardware fault...
:crying::crying:
And now I'm without my Ultra...
