Hello everyone. I will soon be switching to a different carrier, and will be trading in my phone. Sadly, this means that it will need to be returned to stock. I have tried searching around and haven't found a straight answer. My phone is currently Loki'd. Is there any way I can restore back to stock MDK with Odin and remove all signs of root? Right now, when I start my phone up, it shows the unlocked lock and says modified, so I am hoping that there is some way I can return back to stock. Ideally I would want to go back to MDK, in case for some reason I don't switch. That way, I know I will be able to get back custom recovery if everything falls through. I will keep data disabled until I trade it in, in order to prevent an update.
Sorry if this has been answered before, but I tried searching and couldn't find anything. Maybe I just overlooked it.

Will flashing that remove the remove the "Custom" splash at startup as well, or will I need to run something else before doing that? I know on my SIII, I had to run Triangle Away before returning it as well.

Yes it will bring it back to complete stock MDK unrooted. I've actually used this a couple times to restore stock firmware. Works perfectly.

theres no guarantees but you are correct they probably wont notice that it doesn't work. What they will be looking for is if the phone works, water damage indicator and physical damage. They will probably once over the phone then return it as long as you are within your proper return period.

That's what I'm thinking. It works it just won't have as much bloatware on it. There just gonna resell it anyway. I tried to restore the nandroid of the original rom but once restored it gets stuck at the first samasung splash screen.

If you flash back via ODIN make sure the three button recovery works because if ODIN crashes mid-way (I've had this happen twice on my previous Vibrant) you've got a brick if you can't get it back into download mode via the buttons. Do a forum search. Or maybe if you wound up with the dreaded black screen of death that wouldn't be such a bad thing. They'd almost have to take it back then.
i just returned one the other day to best buy and the chick went through the phone for a couple of minutes, checked settings and menus and then also checked for physical damage. i had reflashed it back to stock anyways as bell's version comes with a bunch of specific apps. i was glad i did flash it back and i also relocked it to bell's network as i had unlocked it for use on rogers

It really isn't.. its better to be safe than sorry. At least thats how I feel.
And as far as that phone -- pc logo, I guess they would take it back but if they ask you how did it get that way? you're going to have to lie about it and its just going to feel really awkward.
Truthfully though, all they'd have to be trained to do is not accept returns if you see the superuser app. That'd be the easiest way to see if someone has rooted their phone & If you're not even going to take the effort to flash it back to stock, you're probably not going to delete that app either.
Just re-Odin it & call it a day. It took me less than 5 minutes to get back to stock & maybe another 5 to download the necessary files.
This will also ensure that you don't have any leftover contacts or log ins to facebook or anything like that on there (better safe than sorry).
Thanks guys. I was using my slide for the last couple of days by picked the vibrant back up and fell back in love. If I do decide to return it I'll put it back on stock. Thanks again guys.

Yup, that'll work as well. Or you could download a nandroid that is stock without root.
i got my vibrant the day it came out, from costco... $99
Swapped it a week later, Couldn't unroot it for some reason, but they didn't notice... then again it was costco
They won't care trust me i worked for tmo. These people don't even know what root is they might think its a plant. They just scan it out of their inventory and send it to samsung. If it has root on it they are not going to send it back to tmo just to find u or look to charge your account. That is soooooo tedious cuz u have to do an IMEI search which hardly works on TMOs internal network (i tried when i worked with them never really worked) so yea all they look for is hardware damage and the liquid damage indicator other then that ur golden.
Okay, this is driving me nuts. I've found multiple posts on how to unroot my phone but ALL the links are dead for Odin and everything I need to do it. SOMEBODY PLEASE throw me some links that work and instructions! I rooted it with the one click root method thing. I gotta get this thing back to stock so I can get my replacement since the screen is cracked.

Thats great...but when they go to test it and find out that its been hacked, Verizon is going trace that phone back to you and charge you for the replacement. As the poster above stated, its not worth the risk when it takes 5min to odin back to stock.
they actually still can tell that the phone has been flashed even if you odin back to stock. The only way to truly completely hide that the phone has been rooted is to use a usb jig and reset the custom binary download counter.
But they honestly don't care. This is all much ado over nothing.

On the new devices that have flash counters yes...but from my understanding not on the fascinates or older devices. Maybe Im wrong tho?
I was pretty sure that the fascinated had this counter as it is triggered when Odin flashes the phone.
Anyway, I'll try to look into it if I get time.

Stock ROM, Rooted and Unlocked.
Phone did the OTA update from today (5/2/13), rebooted to the green android, progress got to about 3/4 done and the screen goes black, battery was full charge.
Phone will not come on now, no button combinations work, computer (odin or toolkit) does not see the phone.
Are there any other options that I can try?

Stated that in the OP, battery was full when I started the update. Only took it about 5 minutes before it went black, so I know the battery isn't the issue.
You may have bricked your phone. You're not supposed to run the update if you're rooted and unlocked, something about it not being able to update with a custom recovery. I almost made the same mistake.

So I've been having this issue ever since I upgraded to kitkat. I'll be messing with my phone normally for all day and then once in awhile when I lock it and and go to pull it back out or unlock it, the phone is turn off. I know it shuts off because I have to hold the power button and all of a sudden the Samsung Galaxy S4 screen pops up like it usually does from boot up. This is really frustrating and I don't know why it keeps doing this. It's not usally a daily thing but I'll happen once every 3 to 4 days and sometimes happens twice a day. Has anyone else had this issue or know any suggestions how to fix it??????? Any help would be greatly appreciated! !!! My s4 is the Mk2 version btw.

You're baseband version only represents the modem you're on. When people say they're "on MK2" or "on MDK" they mean the bootloader version. What method did you use to upgrade to 4.4? Are you on the leak, NC2 or the official update NC5?

Were you rooted or anything, or completely stock when you took the OTA? If you were completely stock, then the baseband should've updated to NC5 as well, so something went wrong with your update. Can you screenshot your about phone screen?
I wonder, if the modem didn't update with your OTA, then something might've went wrong with the boot.img/kernel as well, which is the most common culprit with this type of issue.
I'm going to say try a factory reset first and if the issue persists then you will need to use Odin to flash a fresh NC5 tar image.

Well I didn't realize on either updated it my baseband version changed from MK2 to NC5. So yeah it did change along with the OTA update. But see I DID have my phone rooted like 2 weeks before the OTA and decided I didn't want root on my S4 so I uninstalled, eveything. From SuperSU. To busybox. So when I took the update no I was not at the time rooted. But I'm thinking some old root filed are still on my phone causing it to do this random power off thing. So I don't know really what to do yet besides factory reset:C

Yeah, unfortunately that seems like the only option. You might want to wait for someone else to chime in with an idea, but personally I don't care about the data on my phone so I would factory reset.

Yea I'm with Josh in that I don't care about the data on my phone so when things like this pop up I can just either factory reset or use Odin. You can at least save all your important stuff to your PC or external sd first. Hard to say what's causing it really... If you were able to flash a new kernel I'd suggest that but that's not an option right now... Unless surge or someone can extract the 4.4 stock kernel to use with Odin.... Most likely Odin the full kit kat image though should definitely help worse case

I know @Surge1223 on the Galaxy S4 thread designed a way to go from root to kitkat and keep the root. Any one out there doing something similar for this device?

The only thing with that is, that the screen is cracked on it and I dont know if we plan on claiming the insurance on it. So if I flash it, I assume I will set off the flash/knox counter. Then I will have to purchase triangle away to reset it, correct? I guess I may have to do that anyways if I plan on unrooting it.
No idea what you mean by flash/counter and purchasing triangle. But if you mean flashing to stock and unrooting it's simple. Learn Odin search for use Odin s3 on XDA and its simple. If you get to that point I'll help you out. Hangouts I'm [email protected]

Thanks @fuzzychinsagrero. The counter is a warranty thing, at least it is on the s3 and s4, that can tell if you have modified or put a different OS (ie. cynaogen, etc). If that counter has been changed from 0, sometimes they void the warranty because you tampered with it. I think you can tell if you have by doing the vol down+home+power when turning on the phone. Then do volume up for download mode and then you can see in the text in the upper left hand corner a flash counter and knox counter. Like I said, this is how it is on the s3 and s4, I figure it is the same.

And If I am correct, Triangle Away by chainfire, can reset that counter. Yes, odin is great I have used it to do some on my s4 and s3 I used to have.
Only way to get kitkat right now is to wait till Verizon actually releases, which wont be at least for another couple months. I wouldnt be surprised if its released after the Note 4 is released. (4.3 for Note 2 was pushed out after note 3, if I remember correctly. I might be wrong).
But as of right now, unless you're running 4.1.2 with an unlocked bootlader, you're out of luck.
But if you do have an unlocked bootloader, go flash AOKP or CM11 nightly builds. I prefer AOKP because it seemed a little more stable than CM11.

AFAIK Triangle Away simply hides the lock but if you dive deep in settings the system still reports as "Custom".
