[Q] Stuck on clockwork recovery bootloop - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So here's the deal, I'm really nervous and stressed because i offered my friend to root and flash cyanogenmod on his sg s3 (i9300 US international) , so i rooted without a problem then copied cyanogenmod and gapps to internal storage. I went to flash both via clockwork recovery, I did everything I was so supposed to do and while flashing cyanogen mode i got install interupted message (along with status 7 or something like that) from that point on i can't get out of clockwork recovery, i tried everything including wiping all data, only 2 screens i can get to are clockwork recovery and downloading mode, I think i should flash stock rom via Odin but I don't know which region version to download because US or UK international aren't option for some reason. I really really need help on this one guys, I'm freaking the hell out. What should I do
thanks

error 7 has to do with old recovery. download the latest cwm (at least 6.0.4.4), twrp or philz touch put it on external sd card and flash it through recovery. restart recovery and you should be able to flash cm11
I don't think you have a nandroid backup?
what do you mean with us and uk versions are no option?

I meant no option as in I can't see it as download option anywhere, only the other regions. Other thing is, odin recognizes S3 while in downloading mode but my computer itself doesn't for some reason. It recognized it before this whole incident (hence files being on the storage) maybe me puting the files on internal storage before was the mistake.Btw no i don't have backup, I guess Im dumb but I didnt think i needed it, thought it was simple process without any complications.

so which cwm version did you use?
if it's an old one try it the way I mentioned above. I would recommend philz touch (can be flashed through cwm) because there you can choose in wipe options to clean to install a new rom and then flash cm11. and you can also make an efs backup if you haven't already done it.
so maybe you do not need to reflash the stock rom

Cool I got the Philz now but there's still the problem of getting different cm or current one into external storage also i cant access the old cm file on philz recovery now, i think it was big mistake putting the files into internal storage instead of external, any idea how to get my pc to recognize the device? it had no problem before the screwup

Don't you have a external sd card reader? Or put your sd card in another phone and copy from there..

[Q] HELP!!! flashed CWM to my 2.3.5 Fascinate, now i cant get out of recovery

used oden to flash CWM. now i cant boot into android, it just keeps kicking me into CWM recovery.
anyone see this? any suggestions? would a wipe fix it?
did you flash a rom if so which one?
no ROMs, simply just tried flashing CWM via Odin
may i ask why 2.3.5?
what were you trying to do?
i am still able to get into Download mode to flash files via Odin, so i dont think all is lost. but, still just stuck in recovery. when i try to reboot it just takes me right back into recovery. i may have flashed an incorrect version of CWM which could be the cause of this problem. if that was the case, any ideas as to how i can get back into a proper boot?

I was trying to flash CWM so i could flash a custom ROM. Had this phone forever and was just looking to try out some ROMs out there.
As long as you odin cwm none of your os is really touched.
try the cwm 4 fixed for cm7. http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...2&d=1311907538
Now when you reboot your device the stock kernel will over right the cwm.
also make sure you put the odin file in the PDA section.
So basically flash the new cwm and try booting into normal that should get you back where you started from. 100% stock.
that link didnt work. tried searching for the thread without any luck
for some reason it truncated the link with a '...' and it thinks that is part of the hyperlink
dl.dropbox.com/u/14764513/cwm4_fixed_for_cm7-ODIN.tar <- cwm 4 fixed for cm7
thanks.. so i flashed this via odin. same problem. i start the phone. the samsung logo comes up. it disappears for a second. then it comes back up and kicks me into recovery.
weird right? any suggestions
ok then what is your endgame?
Now before you said you flashed just the CWM, may i ask why...if you did not intend to flash a rom? were you going to flash a Kernel or obtain root?
Perhaps you should try this
Download this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278838
It is a custom kernel.
Now Flash CWM with odin
Put battery back in [dont touch power button yet]
Hold down BOTH volume and Power all at once * Dont let go until you see Samsung Logo.
[should still be plugged into pc via usb]
You will boot into CWM
using the volume up and down-Scroll down to Mounts and storage [select it by hitting the power button]
Then scroll to Mout USB storage
~now you should be able to see your SDCard as storage on your PC, put the Kernel some where on your SD Card~
[back on your phone Then Select Unmount
Scroll to ****Go bacK***** [select]
Scroll to install zip from sd card [select]
Select choose zip from sdcard
Navigate to where you have the zip
Select it
Scroll down to Yes-Flash........
Let the phone do its thing!
Good luck!
Your bootlooped...if you can get into cwm wipe all three and flash a rom thats compatible with the version of cwm you have installed. Or odin back to stock and start over...

I wiped my internal sd card.. My galaxy s2 won't boot anymore

I made a grave mistake today, I wiped everything in my internal sd card. Now it won't boot anymore. It is just booting from the galaxy s2 logo. I followed the guide in the the wiki of cyanogenmod
The part where i made a mistake is in the "Place the CyanogenMod update.zip file on the root of the SD card." I thought that the root of the sd card is in my external microsd card. So I proceeded and put the update.zip in the microsd card.. Then I did Wipe data/factory reset and Wipe cache partition. After that I tried to find the update.zip but can't find it anywhere.
So I rebooted my galaxy s2, then bang it won't start anymore. It just loops in the galaxy s2 logo part.
So I searched google and found out that I wiped everything in my internal sd card including the stock galaxy s2 software. i made the biggest mistake of the year.
I mistakenly put the cm9 in my external sd card.. The clockwork mod can't read the external sd card. So now i'm stock with a brick galaxy s2
Please help me. I just started this rooting thing and now my galaxy s2 is bricked.
I know the odin application can help me flash a new rom. But i don't know where to proceed. What rom should I download?
If i can install a custom rom using odin i know this can help me fix my problem.
Please guide me. im begging all of you.
Can you still put your phone in download mode? if you can, then you can probably install stock rom.after that you can root your phone again. have you tried intratech's thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928
Sounds to me like you didn't flash a proper kernel. You'll get stuck at the boot logo if that happens.

I would advise you use odin to flash a stock rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 use this to download a stock rom / root it. Then you can flash any rom after that!
I deleted my internal on purpose
You say Clockwork Mod can't recognise your External SD card, so i presume you can get into recovery?. if you're running a custom recovery like Clockwork and you can get in to recovery you'll be ok.
Dl a custom rom (checkrom) or kernel which supports external sd card, (like siyah or something) Connect your phone to your pc, and boot into recovery. Go to storage options in recovery and mount your phone. Your internal memory should be available to view in your pc. Copy across the file(s) you downloaded and Install the zip. The custom rom will bring you back to speed, or the custom kernel will allow you to flash whatever you had on your External SD to begin with. I recommend the rom flash though.
There should be plenty of help regarding Odin in the forums. Let us know how you get on.

If you wiped internal sd card you need to remove and replace battery enter download mode and flash a stock rom via ODIN .As you have wiped the entire OS so phone cannot boot to something that no longer exists .
Any stock rom will recover your phone logic says use one for your location .

Happy to help, and good to hear it worked out
This is how you learn about custom roms, i think its good to get a bootloop etc. because it forces you to try troubleshoot and increases your knowledge.
and also if you can get into CWM recovery then thats generally a good sign and things can be recovered from there.
glad everything worked for you.

Root from sd?

hi there
my USB port is broken
i want to root my phone via sd card, it is possible ?
iam on orange UK 2.3.3 BVKG3
i just need to root it
cheers
If you first update to ICS somehow (OTA?), yes.
Although i seen something similar to that (flash a .zip file using stock recovery to gain root) i haven't seen someone around s2 forum make a .zip like that. I have seen low end devices gain root by flashing .zip files through stock recovery like Galaxy Ace, Optimus Me and Galaxy Y.

Doesn't Mobile Odin require root in the first place to run? His phone is currently unrooted, unless that status has changed.

I do have a theory... but it will involve you upgrading to ICS while you're at it. You'll also have to wipe your device, which will remove all your apps/contacts/etc, but should leave all your pictures/movies/music/etc. I am not sure if it will work or not, as I haven't actually tried it myself.
You'll need an external SD card for this.
- Download CWM Recovery for the Galaxy S2 from the ClockworkMod website and put in on your external SD card.
- Download one of wanam's stock ICS ROMs that are CWM flashable from his thread and put it on your external SD card.
- reboot to recovery
- do a full wipe (data/factory reset)
- choose "apply update from external storage"
- find and select the recovery image downloaded in the first step, and wait for CWM recovery to appear
- choose "install from sdcard"
- find and select the ROM you downloaded in the second step
Once this last step is done, I believe you'll need to reboot. The advantage of this is though all the ROMs in wanam's thread are all stock, they are ALSO rooted. So you'll both upgrade to ICS and root your device simultaneously.
Again, this is a theory, but I don't see why this wouldn't work. (of course, someone please point out anything I didn't think of that would prevent this from working the way I envisioned it)
not working for me nothing, as CWM zip file cannot be instaled from stock recovery

Applying update.zip without losing pictures?

Hi everyone,
An acquaintance has brought his gf's i9300 to me because he needs help. Him and his gf went on a trip somewhere. She took a bunch of photos. She stored them on the internal storage rather than the SD card. At some point, she tried to apply an OTA update and now it's stuck at the Samsung logo. I believe the update got corrupted or maybe she let the phone die while it was applying... Something obviously went wrong. He's hoping I can get it to boot without losing the pictures.
I know I can flash an Odin image but I'm pretty sure that will wipe what they want. There is a thread here on XDA that says some Odin images won't erase data, but the files are out of date (they are ICS).
I did go in to recovery and try to apply the update.zip from cache but it failed.
Can anyone just provide me with the update.zip of the most current OTA for the Hong Kong version of the i9300?
One other thing to note, when I go in to recovery it says it has CSC XFE. According to another XDA thread, that's supposed to be the region code for South Africa.
Any help is appreciated.
Pretty sure all roms don't wipe data on sammobile.com but further confirmation needed.
Anyway, sammobile.com is where you need to be
Not sure if you can use mskip's unified toolbox to pull the data off the /sdcard

Sam Mobile does not have the Hong Kong ROM.
The unified toolbox requires the phone to be booted to Android.
I did download the ZSDLL1 HK based firmware that can be flashed in Odin, but I'm not going to flash it unless I know for a fact it won't erase their pictures. It would be awesome if I could just download the update.zip, throw it on an SD card, and apply it from there.

If you've got access to Recovery you can try to do a nandroid backup before trying anything else, then I think you may be able to get the pictures from the data folder in the nandroid.
The phone is stock, non root. Everything is stock. It's his gf's phone. Are the S3s sold in Hong Kong bootloader unlocked from the factory? If so, I might just unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery like twrp, mount the internal storage as a drive, and copy the files over. Though I think I'll run in to issues trying to mount to the PC due to lack of USB mass storage support...
There are some data recovery apps on play store, and they are fairly effective, so even if the phone gets wiped you should be able to recover most pictures......just remember to try data recovery app before you start filling up your internal sd as it will only recover deleted data that hasn't been overwritten
There's no way you can apply an update.zip now. The process failed, breaking the os. Its all or nothing I'm afraid.

Also if you do flash a custom recovery, you can use the unified toolkit to perform an adb pull (option 11) whilst connected in recovery mode if all else fails.
I just cant see how you'll get back to HK stock
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Try this:
Download the .tar version of a custom recovery (I recommend PhilZ's CWM recovery). Flash it via Odin. This won't touch the data partition.
Now you can try and see whether you can connect the phone to the computer, mount the internal sdcard, and transfer out the data required.
If that doesn't work:
Using the custom recovery, try flashing the update.zip again. Else, download a stock firmware based custom ROM (maybe something on the smaller side, such as Wanam's de-bloated/light custom ROMs), put it into your external SD Card, and flash it using the recovery. Wipe the cache and dalvik cache, and reboot your phone.
Now, you can take the pictures out, onto your computer.
To flash back to a completely stock setup: first use Triangle Away by Chainfire to reset the binary counter, then get into download mode and Odin flash your region's firmware to get back to stock.
All the best man!

Yeah that looks like the best course of action. All that matters is trying to get the pics. I think after that they don't care if I reflash via Odin. Of course, if it's impossible I'm just going to tell them and offer to restore stock firmware which I've already downloaded.

These sound like a great idea. I'm already familiar with recoveries, I have Odin, I have the triangle away apk already (although it requires root).... I mean I myself have a USA variant of the S3. I'm pretty sure mounting in recovery is the only chance.
My only worry is that I seem to remember not being able to do this with my Verizon variant for some reason...
Also, if you can help me find the update.zip that would be much appreciated.
Thank you!
If you specifically use Philz recovery (link in my signature) that @Erahgon suggested, if you go into "Mounts and storage" you can use "mount /data".
From here, (assuming you're set up to use adb) you can use the following commands in windows cmd or Linux terminal:
Code:
adb pull /data/media/DCIM c:\users\myusername\Desktop
The "Mount /sdcard" options in recovery wont help.
OR, if you have an external SD card, you can follow the Instructions for Philz recovery to put aroma filemanager on the sdcard. This allows you to use a file manager from inside Philz recovery. You action this (once you have the zip in the correct place on external sdcard) Philz Settings > Aroma File manager.
Within there, you'll be able to copy the DCIM folder to external SD easily.

Wow thanks for this idea. But I went ahead and took care of it in a more roundabout way, which I'll detail for a future searcher.
I flashed Philz recovery. Then I flashed a ROM that was basically stock rooted. Then I gave the phone back. I didn't want to keep their phone too long. I figured that she got her data and hopefully maybe the inconvenience of having to restore apps along with this incident would teach her to store pics on an external from now on. The ROM also came with a 50 GB dropbox bonus, so I told them to sign up for that and start using it.
I remembered through research that custom recoveries will leave data/media alone (or internal sd) while still erasing all user apps when doing factory reset. And installing custom ROMs also leaves that alone. It took me numerous flashes, but I already had triangle away so I used that. The counter is unfortunately stuck at 1, but I asked first if they planned on keeping the phone or getting warranty service. They planned on keeping it, so I just told them if they ever needed to warranty it or something to just bring it back to me.
I also made sure to set SuperSU to deny root by default (except triangle away)... There was no way I was going to leave that power unchecked in her hands.
Thank you again for the help, everyone. When I get a chance I'll report my own thread to get it locked.
If any future searcher finds this and has questions, PM me.
Yup new bootloaders increment flash counter back to 1 every boot.
Have to prevent triangle away from booting the device once its done the deed. Them flash stock from Odin

Download one of the stock ROMs from Sammobile.com or simply from here and flash it using ODIN. Check this. Remember to download 4.1.2 + ROMs only. Don t flash ICS ROMs as there is a risk of SDS.
Once you flash stock, you will loose your root. So just root again using CF AutoRoot. CF-AutoRoot does not give you custom recovery. So after rooting you will have to install a custom recovery.
PhilZ Recovery is good. Download the .tar.md5 and flash using ODIN same way you flashed the ROM.
NOTE : - Download the versions for your phone model only. Don t download and flash other phone model s ROM/Recovery.

Goto recovery now with your custom ROM, wipe data. Then reboot into download and flash Stock ROM and do as I mentioned.
And yes the backup which you have can be used after gaining root access to restore apps+data using Titanium Backup.
The backups are stored in your SD card. Nothing is deleted from the SD card. But to be on the safer side, just keep a backup of your backups in your computer.
The CM10.1 backup should be in clockworkmod folder in internal/external SD and the apps backup should be there in Titanium Backup folder in internal SD card.
Simply read the how to return to stock for warranty guide
Is there a need to use triangle away app

If you don't want to claim any warranty then there is no need to use Triangle Away App...
My Binary Count is 13 and i don't care to reset it.
but if you are returning to stock rom then its always a good idea to reset your binary count.
because if you broke your touch then there is no way to reset your binary count and you wont be able to claim warranty.
believe me it happened to me once.
I always thought that if there is something problem with my phone then i could use triangle away and un-root my phone to claim warranty
but what if touch screen is not working ? Damn no way to reset binary cout
