Root from sd? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi there
my USB port is broken
i want to root my phone via sd card, it is possible ?
iam on orange UK 2.3.3 BVKG3
i just need to root it
cheers

If you first update to ICS somehow (OTA?), yes.

Although i seen something similar to that (flash a .zip file using stock recovery to gain root) i haven't seen someone around s2 forum make a .zip like that. I have seen low end devices gain root by flashing .zip files through stock recovery like Galaxy Ace, Optimus Me and Galaxy Y.

Yes it can be done. I've done it myself on SGSII and it works fine. See this thread for details:

He's still on GB. That only works for ICS.

Doesn't Mobile Odin require root in the first place to run? His phone is currently unrooted, unless that status has changed.

I do have a theory... but it will involve you upgrading to ICS while you're at it. You'll also have to wipe your device, which will remove all your apps/contacts/etc, but should leave all your pictures/movies/music/etc. I am not sure if it will work or not, as I haven't actually tried it myself.
You'll need an external SD card for this.
- Download CWM Recovery for the Galaxy S2 from the ClockworkMod website and put in on your external SD card.
- Download one of wanam's stock ICS ROMs that are CWM flashable from his thread and put it on your external SD card.
- reboot to recovery
- do a full wipe (data/factory reset)
- choose "apply update from external storage"
- find and select the recovery image downloaded in the first step, and wait for CWM recovery to appear
- choose "install from sdcard"
- find and select the ROM you downloaded in the second step
Once this last step is done, I believe you'll need to reboot. The advantage of this is though all the ROMs in wanam's thread are all stock, they are ALSO rooted. So you'll both upgrade to ICS and root your device simultaneously.
Again, this is a theory, but I don't see why this wouldn't work. (of course, someone please point out anything I didn't think of that would prevent this from working the way I envisioned it)

not working for me nothing, as CWM zip file cannot be instaled from stock recovery
there is signature problem
i already downloaded touch version too without luck

Can't boot into clockwork recovery

Ok so i downloaded rom manager and selected the top option flash clockworkmod recovery and picked my phone ( im already rooted by using the one step click root) and then i picked install rom from SD card and picked my room (which is Bi-winning v3) and my phone turned off and rebooted and went into the samsung recovery screen i tried to reinstall packages but gave me a error , i even tried the "all clockworkmod" recoveries and no luck same thing happens boots me up to the samsung recovery.
Does any one know what am doing wrong or what i can do to fix this problem?? thanks in advance and im still on my stock android os have't changed anything.
First, you need to start with a clean SD card. Then, open ROM Manager, flash cwr etc. etc. When it is finished downloading, power off the phone and reboot into recovery. From there (this is where the clean SD card is needed) then hit "reinstall packages, then hit reboot. This should bring up the iconic green text. reply if there are any problems.

hmm so do i need to clean my sd before i flash cwr or do i do it when i reboot my system?? from the android recovery screen??
Is not very clear to me. Did you flash your phone previously? have you done ODIN, kies, etc? have you tried this?

-ODIN to stock
-go here> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1157002 and download the link in the EDIT: POSSIBLE FIX (put this on root of internal SD)
-Re-install packages through stock recovery.
For some reason Rom Manager is not flashing CWR right. I couldn't get it to stick for hours. Just kept rebooting into normal load.
Follow the instructions above and you should be good to go. The 1.72mb update.zip should give you root and CWR

Just download that update.zip he referenced (that I put there), and flash it.. instead of using Rom Manager.
it will root and install CWR for you.

i highly suggest you learn how to use ODIN in the Vibrant Bible. If you're doing anything that has to do with rooting and flashing your phone, be sure you know how to revert back to stock. You WILL NEED TO at some point or another or find out what if feels like to own a brick.

[Q] rooted device can't install new ROM

Hello everybody,
First I'd like to thank to community for the hard work. I v read a countless amount of pages of this forum and I can't even imagine the time people spent helping on issues or writing tutorials.
So thank you if you re up to spend few minutes on my specific case (and sorry for the bad english).
Here is my device and the different version of kernel ...
1/ Rooting my device (tutorial in french translated from xda)
http://www.cnetfrance.fr/produits/guide-rooter-son-galaxy-s2-39763841.htm
S-Root version used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
Everything went pretty well when I rooted the GS2. I got the Superuser app so i figure it's ok.
I just used a modified kernel found on xda who was corresponding the my base band version (just the PDA in Odin).
2/ Installing a new ROM (Cyanogenmod by Rom Manager)
I followed : http://www.redmondpie.com/install-cm7-on-galaxy-s2-using-rom-manager-how-to-tutorial/ and http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II:_Full_Update_Guide (official guide) using Rom Manager premium.
When i tried to reboot in Recovery (manually or with Rom Manager), i can't find the "Install the zip" option, I have 4 available: "Update from the zip", the 2 wiping/delete options and the reboot.
So obviously if i try to wipe files, wipe the cache then to update with the zip I have the following Error:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
Do you have any idea what went wrong in the process ?
Should i flash the phone withOdin and change my base band version to another one ?
For info, I did the Permission Fix option in Rom Manager too. Didnt help.
Thanks a lot.
U need clockworkmod instaled first..

You didn't install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Thanks for theses answers but I think I installed it with Rom Manager and i flashed it to the last version.
(joined file 1 : cwm rom manager.jpg)
When i reboot in recovery mode here is the only options available (and it's the problem i pointed out) :
(joined file 2 : 20111125_13221022.jpg)
Maybe a problem with my SD card ?

As we've already said, you haven't installed CWM Recovery. You see at the top of your second photo where it says "Android system recovery (3e)"? That's stock recovery.
you can't install CWM recovery thru ROM manager.
just flash the CF Root Kernel for KI4 thru ODIN , you will have CWM recovery.
Hmm I understand about the CWM version I'm booting with, but as you can see on the first capture, my kernel version is a modified one i got after using Odin (puting this Kernel : GT-I9100_XXKI4_insecure.tar from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671).
I got the root access by S2 Root.
Ok I think I installed only the Kernel and not CF Root available here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I ll try to redo Odin and stuff and let you know if I'm still alive.
So it's not great right now. I have installed CF Root with Odin, so I had CWM on my phone (I could see the application). Then after reboot with CWM Recovery and installing Cyanogenmod, the phone doesnt want to start anymore.....
I tried to apply the insecure kernel again with Odin but still impossible to download. I'm stuck on the screen with the yellow sign and written Galaxy S2.
HALP !!
I just tried to put back the official firware version : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 and put it in my phone with Odin.
Ok, I dont have the yellow sign anywore but the phone is still stuck on the boot screen (where it's written Samsung GALAXY s II)...
What should I try ?
I'm still able to boot with CWM recovery but I didn't make any backup and nothing work.
Do you think the phone is dead ?
5 posts in a row?
So, just to clarify, you've tried to install CM7, which amongst other things tells you to do a nandroid backup, and also to flash twice in succession. Did you do either of these things? The instructions are there to be followed, don't just ignore them.
Ok my bad I didn't backup anything because I had no data to backup. This was maybe a bad move...
Anyway, I tried to flash it twice yes. Right now, i'm working with a modified Kernel (with CF Root), and booting in CWM Recovery. When I want to flash again by installing from the .zip I get a Satus 7 Error.
In CWM, every advanced options are apparently available but I dont know anything about them.
And just so you know, on my SD Card i have 1 update.zip and the update-cm-7.1.0-Galaxys2.... .zip from Cyanogen.

Flash a stock rom with Odin and then root your phone again. Start reading and follow procedures when you want to flash custom roms again .See Intratechs`s thread for a stock rom
Thanks for your reply.
I did it, it didn't work, I mean i could flash with Odin but the reboot doesn't work : the start screen appeared without the yellow sign, but it's stuck on it.
--- update
FYI, I installed Rom Manager yesterday, it way interact in a bad way with CWM Recovery.
For now i can mount USB by CWM Recovery but cannot do anything else.
If you have a method to clean completely the phone ? Maybe the bootloader is broken...

I re partitionned my SD Card with Odin and tried to install a new stock ROM. Everything pass with Odin but to finalize the set up (while reboot), I got some errors and still the same problem during the boot. It's stuck !
I installed a insecure Kernel so I can access CWM Recovery but still stuck and now I can't mount anything .

Thnx for the quick response
I think the problem isn't cm9, when I was trying to install the from I couldn't boot to the cwm recovery because I forgot to root my device. Then I rooted my s3 with cf something root kit and then my signals were gone. I have the international version so my phone should be factory unlocked so I thought I should install cm anyway cuz that might solve the problem. But it didn't. I really like cyanogenmod and don't want to revert back to crappy touchwizz . The problem was there before installing cm9 but after rooting my phone.
Please any help. I really need to use my phone.
Thnx

You should reinstall everything from the scratch mate, so revert your device at stock (using odin), then flash the correct [email protected] kernel and finally if everything is working flash cm9.
Edit: if your device is locked i think you can unlock it easily, search in the forum you can find out everything you need for this.

Okay,
I have downloaded my firmware file but i noticed that i need three tar files for the flashing precess through ODIN but i downloaded only 1 file *.tar.md5
no clue now what to do
Update: I tried to extract the file using splitfus but it didnt work.
Update 2: Okay now I have Installed my stock firmware and it seems to be working now.. But should I risk installing the CM9 again ?

- launch Odin
- load that ONE FILE on PDA section
- put your phone in download mode (volume down+home+power)
- connect the phone to computer, wait for drivers to be installed and ODIN to find your phone (you will see a message in Odin)
- click start
- don't touch the phone until it's done. It will boot alone
Also, it might be a good idea to wipe data / reset to factory before and after flash.
You could find all this info with google ....
On the topic, I have a similar issue. My phone was factory unlocked , and got locked after flashing latest stock firmware. Downgrading didn't solved anything. I am searching the forums right now, but it seems like all fixes are dated.
If anyone could point me in the right direction, it will be appreciated.
Thx
Hey rsndetre,
Thnx for the post, but sorry I already did that and it worked ..
Here are the method I used to get back my device back to normal and got my sim card working and again reinstalled cm9
1- Downloaded Toolkit from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
2- Flashed Stock Boot Image
3- Flashed Stock Recovery Mode
4- Downloaded stock firmware from http://fus.nanzen.se/
5- Flashed stock firmware using Odin (your method above)
6- Rooted the device again (using odin and CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4)
7- Downloaded and placed cm9 and google apps package in SDCARD
8- Installed Rom Manager from Play Store.
9- Downloaded and Installed ClockWorkMod from rom manager and booted to recovery mode using RomManager
10- Then factory resetted, formatted the cache and installed the CM9 and GAPPS V11
Then my phone was good to go.
My phone is up and running, thanks rsndetre, Arsaw and TecQuality for your replies. I appreciate your time
Thanks
Muzammil Ahmed.

I wouldn't have tried this as your phone is i9100P, although I know the difference isn't that big.
Also, was your phone rooted? It had to have been rooted beforehand.

That's your problem. You were on 4.0.3, which is ICS.
The instructions at galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-rooted-galaxy-s2-i9100/ don't specify, but they are for Gingerbread ONLY. The recovery kernel contained within that zip package is ClockworkMod Recovery 4.0.1.4, which is for Gingerbread.
This thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693) is the updated version of that recovery kernel for ICS.
You don't have to flash the full firmware, just flash a kernel that is meant to work with ICS and you should be fine.

EDIT: if i install the kernel you gave me the link to ([KERNEL][ICS] ClockworkMod Recovery 5.5.0.4) , will it remove the root access i had?
EDIT 2: I have just flashed the kernel via odin, and it finally got past the screen with the yellow triangle! However, it is now stuck on the second screen which shows the 'S' logo with the words 'Samsung Galaxy SII' under it. Any more ideas?

Can you boot to recovery? If so, you can try a factory reset/wipe data. You'll lose all your data, (not counting pictures/media) but at this point, do you have anything to lose?

I will be sure to try that, and basically earlier today i rooted it successfully, and then i had to get CWM onto it so i could start flashing new ROMs etc, and i tried installing CWM via that method that has now caused all of this
Never the less i will try your suggestion, so should i basically mount usb from CWM, then copy the firmware over to the phone, unmount, and then wipe, and then flash it finally?
EDIT: it wont allow me to mount USB in CWM
can i just flash the ZIP using odin in download mode, or does it have to be a .tar file?

No. That download is for a package that must be flashed while the phone is in download mode. That will require you to use a computer, and a flashing tool, such as Odin or Heimdall.

How would I go about flashing it in download mode, i really have no idea as I don't think you can flash zip files in odin, forgive me for all of the questions I really appreciate your help!
EDIT: I have unzipped the file and hooray lies in it the .tar.md5 file! I am in the middle of flashing this and will report back on results
Thanks a lot guys!!
THANKS GUYS FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP, my SII is now working fully again! Cheers to all that helped, flashing the stock firmware worked with wipe/cache
Can't thank you enough!
Last thing if you don't mind, i want to root it again using this: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582)
Now after that, how can i install CWM without getting into the mess i got into today? cheers!

But it appears that this will not give you permanent CWM recovery. Which is what I think he wants.

Well I think Chainfire's CF-Root kernels (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399) are not for i9100P, so not sure if he can achieve permanent CWM recovery. Anyway if he don't plan to flash every hour new ROM he should be fine with latest temporary CWM 6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840223 although will ask Phil about compatibility.

[Q] Stuck on clockwork recovery bootloop

So here's the deal, I'm really nervous and stressed because i offered my friend to root and flash cyanogenmod on his sg s3 (i9300 US international) , so i rooted without a problem then copied cyanogenmod and gapps to internal storage. I went to flash both via clockwork recovery, I did everything I was so supposed to do and while flashing cyanogen mode i got install interupted message (along with status 7 or something like that) from that point on i can't get out of clockwork recovery, i tried everything including wiping all data, only 2 screens i can get to are clockwork recovery and downloading mode, I think i should flash stock rom via Odin but I don't know which region version to download because US or UK international aren't option for some reason. I really really need help on this one guys, I'm freaking the hell out. What should I do
thanks

error 7 has to do with old recovery. download the latest cwm (at least 6.0.4.4), twrp or philz touch put it on external sd card and flash it through recovery. restart recovery and you should be able to flash cm11
I don't think you have a nandroid backup?
what do you mean with us and uk versions are no option?

I meant no option as in I can't see it as download option anywhere, only the other regions. Other thing is, odin recognizes S3 while in downloading mode but my computer itself doesn't for some reason. It recognized it before this whole incident (hence files being on the storage) maybe me puting the files on internal storage before was the mistake.Btw no i don't have backup, I guess Im dumb but I didnt think i needed it, thought it was simple process without any complications.

so which cwm version did you use?
if it's an old one try it the way I mentioned above. I would recommend philz touch (can be flashed through cwm) because there you can choose in wipe options to clean to install a new rom and then flash cm11. and you can also make an efs backup if you haven't already done it.
so maybe you do not need to reflash the stock rom

Cool I got the Philz now but there's still the problem of getting different cm or current one into external storage also i cant access the old cm file on philz recovery now, i think it was big mistake putting the files into internal storage instead of external, any idea how to get my pc to recognize the device? it had no problem before the screwup
Don't you have a external sd card reader? Or put your sd card in another phone and copy from there..

Then if you managed to flash Philz with Odin you must flash back to stock using Odin....
