App Services seem to not be running even though they are - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just wanted to start by saying that I have no idea how this started happening or even when. Only that it started happening within perhaps the past month or maybe 2 months.
I'm having issues with two apps, BBM and PowerAmp. PowerAmp has this feature where if you plug in your earbuds it will resume your music and if you unplug your earbuds it will pause automatically. In probably the last month or so I've noticed that this has no longer been working from Poweramp even though this has been working since I've had it which is a long long time . I thought maybe the Poweramp service was being closed due to not enough phone memory but I would check and not only was the service running but I also had enough memory.
The interesting thing is that I'm having a similar problem with the BBM app. They have a service that runs which checks for incoming messages and in the recent past it too also stopped working. Both PowerAmp and BBM will work if I have opened the app in the past 5 minutes or so. As an example, if I open PowerAmp and use it a bit, close it, and within the next minute I plug in my earbuds it will resume playback. If I take out my earbuds and wait a long period of time and plug back in then no such luck. The same behaviour is happening with BBM.
Many people have similar issues specifically with BBM but keeping the Persistent Icon in their notification area has solved it. For me, it has not. I followed BBM's support which says to have the Persistent Icon on, check to make sure the app does not have background data restricted, and also to check to make sure that background data in general is not restricted. All checks are good. The other interesting thing is that when I switch from data to Wifi all of a sudden I will receive all of my BBM messages, so it seems that the service must be running I'd think?
I don't know if it's a coincidence between both apps or not. Any suggestions or things to try in order to get to the deeper root cause? I have a Nexus 4 and I'm on version 4.4.2 and I should have the latest version of both apps installed. I'm not rooted or anything. It's just a stock Nexus 4 from Google.
Thanks.

Terrible memory management, now what?

The (my) m10 pro has extreme memory management and several of my apps that need to stay in mem, running in the background are kicked out by either oreo or emui all the time.
This makes this phone much less fun to use than my mate 9 where all these apps just ran fine.
The following apps are stopped all the time:
Garmin Connect (communicates with my Fenix f5)
Cambridge connect that connects to my (music) amplifier
Adguard (adblocker)
The problem is that with the garmin and cambridge apps the Bluetooth and wifi connects are also gone and thus communication stops.
My colleague has the very same problem so there must be more people out there with this isse.
Anybody else have this problem cause I think Huawei has a serious issue here.
I have the same issues. Apps that I want to keep running are stopped regardless the different settings to keep them running.
What I do see is that only the Sonos app stays in the background. That app gets reported as still being active and stopping it requires a force stop action. So maybe Garmin Connect should investigate the Sonos solution.
Yes, saw the same. Antivirus apps also play nice and keep running. Nevertheless I think Huawei should be the one playing nice and stop the app killing madness to save 2 minutes battery life...
The Mate 9 had similar issues when it first launched but it was fixed quick. Any idea how to bring this message to their attention?
I'm gonna try it through HiCare anyway.
did you try to add it to "ignore batteryopti..." just do a search in settings
Hi, tried it and it seems to be better now. Lets see what happens over time. Thanks!
It's kinda solved now but after about 12 hours all the background apps I mentioned were killed somehow. So it improved but it's not yet perfect...

My Galaxy S9 Plus starts playing random audio after phone calls.

I am at a loss for what else to do as for troubleshooting, for the most part I know what I am doing when it comes to tech/apps etc. However I have noticed something very strange, creepy too, in the last week and a half. Everytime I hang up a phone call a random audio clip starts playing on my phone. Sometimes the audio sounds like a recording (like the phone randomly recorded something while I was out and about and was replaying it. But I could not peg the location, so I figured its playing a recording, but it isn't from my whereabouts, still creepy), other times its random music clips, I wouldn't be surprised if this switches to inappropriate audio at this rate.
The audio seems to be cut at a 30-40 sec loop, yes it restarts itself and plays indefinitely unless:
I make a phone call, it stops. 50% of the time it resumes after the call.
I have to restart the phone 98% of the time to make it stop.
Or I hit the recent apps and click 'close all'. I'd like to specify only hitting 'close all' stops it, manually closing apps all apps from recents doesn't do the trick.
In my effort to troubleshoot I have tried to:
Close apps from the recents individually hoping it'd help me find the culprit app emitting the sounds. But I had no luck.
I downloaded Malwarebytes and have scanned my phone with it, it didn't find anything helpful regarding to this issue.
I have checked my android filesystem through the file explorer thoroughly trying to look for MP3's or any other relevant audio files.
I have gone into app info screen and force stopped almost all media apps such as spotify, youtube, instagram, fb etc any app that I may suspect to be playing audio in the background or an app I may have used recently. Force stopping it all yielded no results.
I even went into developer settings and dug into the running services, and cached processes and started killing them all one by one and it still didn't stop the audio!
I also made sure I didn't have any hidden or suppressed notifications making it so that the app playing the audio wouldn't appear in the notification panel.
The got the phone mid July, when I got it I factory reset it twice (it's just something I do with new phones). I set it up as a new phone, I am not a fan of letting Google/Samsung restore apps. I did restore the call log and messages through the Samsung backup service.
I haven't noticed any unusual drain that may have been caused by this issue. I would consider myself a power user and use my phone quite a lot through the day. I don't download random apps, most games I play are paid (fortnite/pubg being an exception) so I doubt it's some silly game throwing ads at me. I have Adhell installed and configured properly to filter out 80% of the ads on the phone. So while I could just go ahead and factory reset my phone, my curiosity would like me to get to the bottom of it. I found one more similar thread on the internet about something like this, here is the link to it. It's mostly inconclusive for the most part however the symptoms mentioned are similar to mine.
I have a feeling there is something going on at system level. I should also note the audio channel the audio is playing through is not the "Media" channel, because while this audio plays in the background, even if I play a song on Spotify or play a video on YouTube, this would continue to play on top of it. It persist even after the screen is locked! Interesting part is I can control its volume through the Media slider however.
I know this sounds like a creepypasta story but its been creeping me out the past few days. I genuinely thought someone was spying on me the first day or two before I bought into those big brother is watching conspiracy theories. But I am not located in the United States and I am sure no one is spying. But I have cleared all sensitive files from my phone just in case.
Any help or further troubleshooting ideas would be appreciated, I wish I could troubleshoot on demand too, but this happens once every five phone calls I take. So reproduction has been a pain. I hope this is the right forum to post in, I'd post in galaxy s9 forums, but I feel this is more in this forums ball park.
Why don't you ask it in here?
There is a section for Galaxy 9 Plus.

Kik random message delays in DMs and group chats

As the title suggests lately I've been having issues with Kik, maybe it's just the latest builds that rolled out with the recent updates or maybe even prior to them perhaps, before that I was rather using an year old Kik version since I never update my phone for long.
I updated (time and time again after the issue, reinstalling/installing it back again and again) without any success with the issue. Messages just lag randomly and might take up from 15 minutes to hours before I receive them if the device is on standby mode or sitting idly.
For instance, if the app is running in the foreground/background when the screen turns off, any message I receive 15 minutes after that screen off will delay unless I do something on my phone. If I am using another application as simple as discord or a simple game as Delight Choice text based app it does the same, if someone doesn't text me during those 15 or so minutes after that app switch, after that any messages that are sent to me I never get them and the people sending me those texts reported that the messages were stuck on S. Another example of the delayed message would be this, I tried turning the caffeine mod on and just kept the app in the foreground with no other apparent app running in the background except for the system ones. I just kept my phone as such, the screen was on but I just didn't do anything at all on it, thought maybe I could avoid it with that perhaps but nada, I picked up my phone touched kik entered a chat randomly and messages suddenly started popping up in my notifications.
It's either a recent bug or server issues, I've had them before too but not to this extent which would be back to normal once I uninstalled and installed the application back. I thought maybe it was the modified Kik perhaps, or maybe Xkik since I used to use that before but even that wasn't the case. I would just disable xkik module and kik would have been back to normal if there were any issues. But not this time, even the normal Kik is giving me the same issues with delayed messages.
Since there isn't any support forum for kik, no support email either and I got on the play store to find some of the users complaining about the same issues. Well at least I am not alone, and the issue is not easy to reproduce on other devices so I am stuck with this right now.
Also, I am not using any power saving apps (I was but I uninstalled them all to see if they were causing the issue), kik is not being optimized for battery, my battery is on performance mode along with kernel adiutor which I have set the CPU on performance mode. There isn't any low memory killing going on since I have plenty of ram remaining and have set LMK at very low. I am at a real stalemate here and hope to find some answer or resolution to it.
Right now I have activated heads up notification and put kik notifications to be treated as a priority. I will post the results if any, hope that helps me out with these delays.

quick question for anyone still around

It's been like 5 days since I was able to say ok Google with screen off, call ( name here) and the phone would unlock and dial the number, regardless if it was a contact or not.
Now I say ok Google call ( name here) and either the assistant will not respond after opening to make the call, or it goes open and it shows example,
Call circles pizzeria
But it never makes the call.
Now if I using my fingerprint to unlock the device, say ok Google call circles pizzeria, it will make the call.
Want to note, this is not a contact. Also don't matter if it's a contact or not. I've showed 2 examples of ok Google getting "stuck" on the commands.
I've factory reset the device. I'm thinking this has to be on Google's end. Just want to know if anyone else is affected.
So 19 views, and no one quick tested their own device? Gee thanks....

I don't use Assistant at all (in fact I struggle to keep it disabled on my phone, and Google tries to enable it all the time). So I am one those views, but unfortunately have no experience.
Which OS version are you on? That might affect the results of others who try it.
Does it matter if you're in a Smart Lock situation (Trusted location, Trusted BT device etc)?
Just tested mine. My Google Home took the initiative of making the call, and gave me some tips on my first call that way. This was while my phone was in my hand, too, so I'm not sure why the GH took over, but whatever. In the end, it did dial out... or try to, before I told it to hang up.
Not exactly your situation, so I didn't respond. Mine has nothing to do with unlocking the screen, as I keep my screen unlocked and on Navigation app while driving.
But here's my story...
_________
A few months ago, new Google app update stopped Google Assistant from making the daily phone calls to my wife when I'm coming home from work. (I never know what time I can leave.)
"OK, Google, call (my wife's name)"
Normally automatically dials via Bluetooth through Google Voice.
This time nada, repeatedly -- from trying to show me search results, to not responding at all.
Even tried "OK, Google, call my wife" (instead of her name). Google Assistant: "Who is your wife?" (She's listed in Contacts as my wife, besides her full name.)
Suddenly Google Assistant wasn't performing as previously and also had amnesia.
This happened two days in a row. I had to manually hit a pinned dialer screen shortcut to call my wife while driving home. (Which is technically against the law now in Georgia, touching your phone while driving.)
So, I reverted back to the previous Google app version (downloaded through APK Mirror) -- which does exactly what I need -- and refuse to let it auto update in Google Play Store. I also have Titanium Backup of that specific version on hold, in case Google accidentally updates somehow.
I know I'm now a few months behind in app versions, but I don't have time to mess with trouble shooting. If the version I have works, I'm keeping it.
_______
I have half a dozen apps I also keep from auto updating for similar reasons.
For instance, because of newly imposed Google rules about a year ago, an long time app called My Data Manager has to put an icon on the left side status bar to show it's technically running in the background. On previous versions you could disable that stupid icon or "badge" in the app settings. It's a neat app, because I can merely swipe down and at the bottom of my notifications, there's a pinned box that shows my current data usage. And it's quite accurate. Every time I compare it to my carrier's report of my data usage it's within a few MB.
But I do NOT want to see a CONSTANT icon on my left side status bar for that app. So, I reverted to older version before the Google rules change and it works EXACTLY the way I wish. I unticked "auto update". I've done that for my phone, my wife's and my mom's.
________
I just finished working one month straight, with no days off. Feb 15 - March 13, often 12-14 hour days. In one two week stretch, I worked over 160 hours (4 weeks of work, crammed into 2 weeks.)
So, I'm not putting up with any crap from my phone.
If new app version breaks something, I'm reverting to previous app version and preventing it from updating. At some unknown point in time, if I want to test they've finally fixed what they broke, I will do that when I have free time. Other than that, I need my daily phone to work, period.

What version of the G app are you on?
Also on EdXposed, or regular Xposed grab sudohide.
You can hide any app from play store.

RAM management after Sept Update

I use the tablet mostly for playing. And I am used to move between them without issues. Unless I open a bunch of other apps or browser with multiple tabs and what not. The games remain running without issues or at least they used to. Normally I don't update anything, except for the games because they are live service and I can't play them if I don't. After learning that this update would improved multitasking I updated.
Ever since I can't keep the games open if I leave them for like 20 minutes or maybe less, haven't time it.
Using it as I did, closed them. So I decide to clear all and only play one. After a notification, went to that game for daily tap immediately went back to the prev game and it had close, which cost me a match. After finishing what I was doing on that game. I went to the settings to see if something was amiss. And all the apps I remember disabling that I couldn't uninstall like Youtube are still disabled. I don't have any social media app like FB or anything that would be constantly running. And went back to the game. Lo and behold had to restart again. I checked Dev options and Apps "Background process limit" still standard. Memory is at 4~4.5 with so much free I don't get I it's been so aggressive. Have 66 apps on "deep sleeping" have things like digital well being and other monitoring stuff also off. And the only thing I changed was enabling the "Labs" to allow Multi window for all apps. And just now, went to homescreen while I picked something from the kitchen, I know I didn't take more than 5 min because the screen didn't even timed out. And when I tap on a game, had to relaunch.
God this is ridiculously annoying. And non of the games updated since. I only updated a couple of apps from store.
And worst, I updated believing it would be better at multitasking. Like it would be smarter when using split screen, but it isn't. Maybe it does improve for Samsung apps. But I've seen nothing good from anything I use. And changes to the UI could've been implemented better. Like having dual pane only when you are holding the tablet lanscape. I remember having very old android device that had dual pane but revert to single if you hold them portrait.
I'm considering doing a full reset. But I'm hoping not too. Between the apps and games, which most are 5GB+ up to nearly 10GB it would take me a very long time to set everything again, Easily a full day for some games. (Very bad old, first gen copper line DSL)
Is anyone have any type of similar issues. Cause it would suck if I reset it and that's just how it works now. And it wants me to use the "keep open" feature. Which I don't like, I do like to use the clear all.
One of the main reason I got this particular tablet was for the multitasking. This is the first device I didn't try rooting out of the bat because of a warranty and what not and decided to give it a go as is. Now I'm not sure If I'm just spoiled by years for rooted and heavily modified devices. Or this is just a Samsung thing.
@Omizuke: Not sure if this is related to RAM management, but I'm also on September update. When I update apps via Play Store/Galaxy Store, the device will completely freeze for as long as 30 seconds. It just locks up, I can't do anything. Can't pull down the status bar, nav buttons don't work. Then suddenly it returns to normal. I get the same thing when connecting to WiFi or pairing via Bluetooth. ROM is clean flashed with Odin, i also did a factory reset.
This didn't happen at all on the July update.
I'm not seeing any issues with app killing, as you've described it. All opened apps continue running and I can return to them on demand. I play a lot of games, COD Mobile in particular, and I switch apps a lot between rounds.
I feel you on the not wanting to set up everything again. I save cached copies (APKs/obbs) of my games/apps on my SD card, so I can set everything up without Internet. Just use an app like Total Commander/X-plore to copy the apps.
