Terrible memory management, now what? - Huawei Mate 10 Questions & Answers

The (my) m10 pro has extreme memory management and several of my apps that need to stay in mem, running in the background are kicked out by either oreo or emui all the time.
This makes this phone much less fun to use than my mate 9 where all these apps just ran fine.
The following apps are stopped all the time:
Garmin Connect (communicates with my Fenix f5)
Cambridge connect that connects to my (music) amplifier
Adguard (adblocker)
The problem is that with the garmin and cambridge apps the Bluetooth and wifi connects are also gone and thus communication stops.
My colleague has the very same problem so there must be more people out there with this isse.
Anybody else have this problem cause I think Huawei has a serious issue here.

I have the same issues. Apps that I want to keep running are stopped regardless the different settings to keep them running.
What I do see is that only the Sonos app stays in the background. That app gets reported as still being active and stopping it requires a force stop action. So maybe Garmin Connect should investigate the Sonos solution.

Yes, saw the same. Antivirus apps also play nice and keep running. Nevertheless I think Huawei should be the one playing nice and stop the app killing madness to save 2 minutes battery life...
The Mate 9 had similar issues when it first launched but it was fixed quick. Any idea how to bring this message to their attention?

did you try to add it to "ignore batteryopti..." just do a search in settings

It's kinda solved now but after about 12 hours all the background apps I mentioned were killed somehow. So it improved but it's not yet perfect...

Taskkiller not necessary on Android?

I have read that taskkiller is not necessary on Android as the OS will kill off running apps when it needs memory - what are people's thoughts on this?
Hmmm...I read somewhere (maybe on here) heard if the App is coded properly that when not in use it will be background so not take up memory.
Not too knowledgable, but in that case would imagine they are acting like a windows service so will be taking up memory somewhere....so perhaps what I read was nonsense
Well, I have stopped killing tasks and guess what - I notice no difference at all! Hero is just as speedy (or slow depending on how you wanna look at it!).

Killing truly idle applications wont have significant effect. There are however many applications which appear idle, but still drains resources. An example is Peep, the twitter client, which starts automatically even if there's no twitter account configured. It has some frequent checks that put load on the CPU and thus helps drain power. Killing it adds many hours of standby time.
i'm not using any task manager/killer, did try them for a couple of days, can't really tell the difference, except i was wasting time constantly killing apps :/

Ditto... surely there is no need as the OS will kill a unused app if it needs the memory ??? I don't have any problem running any apps one after the other... they just load.
The only lag I get is while the handset starts a widget update, once they are started everything runs slickly.
I found it a little slicker without taskiller. Especially in the use of big apps like copilot or documents2go. It seems to be managing itself pretty well.
Yep. I can report that the phone is working very well without Taskkiller. I have uninstalled it now.
If you are reading this, give it a try for a few days and tell us what you think. You may be pleasantly surprised...
Ditto - I've removed taskiller so I don't get tempted. Surprise surprise, no problems, no lag, etc. Now mostly this is due to removing the clock and people widget, but memory management seems fine after playing many different games and browsing the internet.
I think a benefit to doing this is that you aren't going to get and bizarre problems caused by killing system processes by accident - ie you won't miss alarms or stop receiving email alerts.

[Q] Sygic stops GPS tracking in background after a while, yours too?

recently I tried out Sygic which works really nice except for one thing:
when Sygic is running in background after a while (seems randomly) the GPS message disappears (upper message in attached pic), the Sygic message remains (lower message in attached pic).
When I click the Sygic message, the app behaves as if I restarted it (says "initializing" on top right). Luckily, it remembers the old route.
Yet sometimes I don't drive myself and would like to do other stuff and have Sygic tracking in the background.
It works fine with Google maps.Yet not with Sygic. Especially when I launch any other app (even the browser, a video or something), Sygic stops tracking immediately (not always but often) or some time later.
GPS is set to never turn off in Sygic and all settings are set to "optimal".
Could that be the Android OS turning something off for Sygic as it might believe it's no longer used or something?
Sygic is more sophisticated than Google maps and uses more ram. If you start opening other apps after Sygic then they will get higher priority in ram. Sygic doesn't really stop so much as get pushed out of memory until it gets switched to again. Not much you can do about it really.

Ah that explains the issue, already feared something like that.
The only annoying part is that it no longer tells me where to go when that happens.
Does anyone know whether this happens with other apps such as Navigon as well?
Since the newest update (at least I didn't notice it before) Sygic has an option "Run navigation in back..." under Battery management.
Haven't tested it yet but that supposedly sets the oom_adj values low enough for the app not to get killed.

Open Sygic.... go to SETTINGS than go to BATTERY MANAGEMENT (i don't know witch is the correct option in english as my SYGIC is in ITALIAN)... the first setting that is show to you is the opportunity to deactivate the GPS signal after a definite time.... change it!
Yeah that option is now replaced, you can only check/uncheck it. I checked it so it keeps running in background but still shuts off after a while when using other apps.
You're right. I have the same problem. This is ridiculous. You are running navigation and expect it to give you the directions at the right moment, but you don't know that in the meantime, while you got a phone call and checked your messages it was turned off silently and no longer working.
Without an option to guarantee it's working and can't be stopped in the background, you're as if you have no navigation at all.
If this can not be fixed it's better not to even install Sygic, cause this takes away a major part of what this app is meant to do. So stupid.
I have tried Igo and it was the same. How serious is that?! To have a navigation, which can stop while you're using it and need it, without warning!

Either simply leave Sygic running in foreground / don't leave it running in background for a while or use a different app.
After I purchased it I also noticed some other annoying issues, e.g. voice says "take exit number 24" instead of how we navigate here "take next exit to A2" (our motorway navvigation signs do not show the exit numbers anyway), forcing me to look at the app way more often when there is an exit leading to 2 different motorways.
Due to such issues as well as this annoying "I die if you leave me running in background" I decided to switch to Navigon. Nicely, this app even tells you which motorway to take AND where it leads to, so I don't even need to look at it.
I haven't run a full test yet. Yet I left a video running in full screen and Navigon kept running in background navigating. Once I know more, I report back (if I don't forget). In any case, I wished I didn't have spent the money for Sygic after all. What do free map updates any good when the app isn't suiting oneself.
P.S.: I did inform Sygic support about the background issue and they requested more information as they didn't experience this issue yet. I provided that but didn't get another reply, the thread was then archived.

I agree with you also for the way Sygic works. It's s not that great. Thanks for sharing about Navigon. Please, test it and post here if the situation with "silent background death" is the same. I would appreciate it if you let me know and will be checking to see how you feel about it when you post your comments.

I have been using Sygic for quite a long time and noticed that on my Galaxy Captivate, after initialization, if you switch to some other app then return to Sygic (either from the app icon, or from the task bar) it always restart.
However on my Galaxy S3 after switch back to Sygic it just continues wherever it left off. I guess that my Captivate had less memory to run Sygic while I have plenty on the S3.
Also in Sygic, go to Settings / Notifications and Sounds / Advanced and turn "Sound always on" would let Sygic to continue to turn-by-turn announcement even if it is not in the foreground, even when the screen is off.
I have plenty of free memory (using HTC one x) and still it's killed. But this is not a problem of sygic. it's a problem of Android. Or may be indrrd sygic didn't make the right settings for the memory registration of this app (if that's something that they could do). As I see the oom values of this app are pretty high usually when I check.
Also about the voice: I have this option checked. But I never had an occasion when it spoke to me when it was killed. I'll check again. May be I didn't notice it...

You probably you haven't set the option to switch off GPS after a certain amount of time. Go to Settings /Battery management / Switch GPS off after... then move the slider until you see "never".

Sad news: Navigon dies in background as well. Just like Sygic, it doesn't always happen. But once you start using other apps actively it will eventually kill Sygic and Navigon silently. As someone already pointed out, it's likely an issue due to how Android works.
I had the relevant options ticked to never disable GPS or anything and it made no difference.
So you can use another app but you can't actively use your smartphone, e.g. I can have Poweramp run in foreground and switch tracks without Navigon dying (it also keeps talking to me via voice, even when the screen is turned off). But if you're not the driver and want to do more than just that then you'd need a second device or so.

P.S.: at least now I could test both apps and personally, I'll stick with Navigon. Navigation by voice is so well developed that I don't need to look at the app while driving and if I do look at it, track assistant is better developed too (it shows you the motorway signs). With the app "Directory Bind" I was also able to move the whole big app + maps onto the external SD card.
Hopefully, the Sygic devs will listen to the community feedback and catch up in development over time.

And yes, the navigation soft producers must make some conclusions.
If I find a good way to protect an app from being killed, I'll post it here.
You can try Fameelee - Family Locator app and you will never get such problems. 24/7 real time accurate gps location tracking, ability to see location history of your app members for the last 30 days, get notification once your app members reach some specific places (that you match by yourself), sms and call logs tracking and a lot of more. App is free and avaiable on appstore and google play market

How to break down Android OS data usage?

A common question I assume, but no good answers showed up on a quick search, everything was ad-hack, not really practical.
Since I got my SIII I've seen a large rise is the amount of data I'm using, also all of which is listed as Android OS and if I drill down it is all background. Is there a way to easily track down what is using so much background data? In my case the top app is Play with 51mb, but the Android OS background is at 2.8GB in 10 days, which is insane. Thus I'm looking for some way to break down what is using all of this data.

settings/data usage shows a breakdown, or there are several apps on the market. Might be a Samsung account backing up data or Google, or drop box, piccassa web album, all these could use a fair bit, make sure they only synch on Wi-Fi, or ditch them, even better
My problem is that the it only shows up as Android OS and then if I select it as background data (none is foreground), all of that does not help as I still do not know the cause, I have setup blocks in Droidwall so that many Apps can only run on Wifi and according to the per app break down that's all fine (none exceed 50 or so megs) the problem is with background data usage by Android. I do have Kaspersky install, so I do not think it is coming from Malware, but .... starting to wonder if maybe a reinstall is in order, that's such a pain.
Current breakdown (1 day all in K unless stated otherwise):
Android OS: 238megs
Google Play Store: 1.48megs
Email: 774
GoogelServices: 152
Gmail: 133
Maps: 124
Google+ 80
Go Weather ex 70
...
so basically no app is using anything yet I've used 238megs.
Maybe it is a Google backup then, do you use that?

I've tracked down it is a matter of large uploads normally 30 to 250 megs that occur in the over night hours (between 1Am and 6AM), but do not know the cause will see if that is it. Also odd that as the phone is connected to a Wifi connection during those hours, so it should not use any mobile data, also as if it is using mobile data when it should be using wifi, will see if I can verify whether this is the case or not tonight. I have 3g watchdog installed now so I can see if the traffic is wifi or cell.

Yep that was the problem, moving massive amounts of data and not using the Wifi connection, turned it off and poof all gone.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but what did you disable exactly?
I think disabling the google backup would help, coz enabling it makes app data back up to google servers. If there's an app with a lot of app data, it can eat up your data bandwidth.

I am using KITKAT ported by Legacy Xperia. Me too facing same problem. From starting, I have not enabled data backup. Still, for 10 days, Android OS consumed 9.5MB data. Look high side for me as I have only 500MB data / month.

I faced the same problem, issue was somewhat with auto backup of data, sync of app data & people details in google account,
BUT the main culprit in my case was uTorrent application.
Even though there was no torrent added to it, i didn't even opened it,
it was using 1GB data daily on WiFi and in data usage it was coming under Android OS usage. I uninstalled it, everything went back to normal.
So try to look for such apps which eat up your data in background, it may not be an error of android OS as such.

App Services seem to not be running even though they are

I just wanted to start by saying that I have no idea how this started happening or even when. Only that it started happening within perhaps the past month or maybe 2 months.
I'm having issues with two apps, BBM and PowerAmp. PowerAmp has this feature where if you plug in your earbuds it will resume your music and if you unplug your earbuds it will pause automatically. In probably the last month or so I've noticed that this has no longer been working from Poweramp even though this has been working since I've had it which is a long long time . I thought maybe the Poweramp service was being closed due to not enough phone memory but I would check and not only was the service running but I also had enough memory.
The interesting thing is that I'm having a similar problem with the BBM app. They have a service that runs which checks for incoming messages and in the recent past it too also stopped working. Both PowerAmp and BBM will work if I have opened the app in the past 5 minutes or so. As an example, if I open PowerAmp and use it a bit, close it, and within the next minute I plug in my earbuds it will resume playback. If I take out my earbuds and wait a long period of time and plug back in then no such luck. The same behaviour is happening with BBM.
Many people have similar issues specifically with BBM but keeping the Persistent Icon in their notification area has solved it. For me, it has not. I followed BBM's support which says to have the Persistent Icon on, check to make sure the app does not have background data restricted, and also to check to make sure that background data in general is not restricted. All checks are good. The other interesting thing is that when I switch from data to Wifi all of a sudden I will receive all of my BBM messages, so it seems that the service must be running I'd think?
I don't know if it's a coincidence between both apps or not. Any suggestions or things to try in order to get to the deeper root cause? I have a Nexus 4 and I'm on version 4.4.2 and I should have the latest version of both apps installed. I'm not rooted or anything. It's just a stock Nexus 4 from Google.

H96 Max 4K Android 11 issue - Apps beeing automatically closed after supposedly not responding for a while, Zattoo, Youtube

The device is fairly new, up2date Hardware/Software wise. However, the device seems to be struggling with performance intensive applications like Zattoo Streaming TV app and e.g. Youtube.
On the first open of the app you can feel the laggyness, which leeds to the app beeing closed automatically, by android 11 system I assuem, because the app seems not to be responding, but it's just struggeling with the processing. On the next open usually things go quicker and I'm able to use the app. It is like some cache is beeing created on the first start which is taking too long for the Android system and hence is beeing force closed.
Since this happens to other apps as well and only performance intensive, I believe it is sime kind of Android feature. Usually the Android system shows a message/warning when an app isn't responding, in this case it doesn't. The app just closes. Next start and it's usually working fine, but from time to time it take 3 or even 4 start for the app to work correctly. I have two of those identical boxes and both show the same behaviour.
So, is this behaviour known to somebody and is there a way to increase the timeout threshold (which in my opinion seems to be the problem)? Thanks in adavance.
