Downgrade possible? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently on Biftor ROM (a 4.1.2 ROM) but would like to try out a 4.4.2 ROM.
If I flash the 4.4.2 ROM is it easy to revert back with a nandroid, I ask as I am aware past 4.2 there are file locations differences etc and downgrading/upgrading from such can be problematic and 'things can go a miss' or dir's multiplied.
I don't want to revert back to 4.1.2 and find a host of file dir that weren't there before or mixed up dir's or a corrupt dir/file system(s).
As for 4.3 and 4.4 ROM's I am unsure if they suffer the same problems as 4.2.
I haven't flashed an alternative ROM in ages and even then never past 4.1.2.
Any advice?

I've seen comments where people say they've gone from custom 4.2.2 to 4.4 without flashing back to stock, so I can't see a reason why you go directly from 4.1.2 to 4.4.2.....
The only thing to watch for is you more than likely will have to flash the latest cwm before you start. Older cwm's give 'status 7 installation aborted' messages if they're used to flash custom KK.........
that shouldn't be a problem though...... @infected_s KK builds link you to the latest cwm in the OP.......
As always.....read the OP in full and probably the last 10 pages of comments on the dedicated threads so that you are familiar with the flash instructions and have an idea of the issues (if any) that the ROMs users are facing.......
This might be my S2 or it might be my W, but it's definitely CM...

But I thought he was asking for downgrading, not for upgrading.. (Not that I know the answer, as I also never gone further than 4.1.2.)

Lol....second line of the OP....hr wants to try out 4.4.2....

Yes I know, he wants to upgrade to 4.4, but only if it is possible to downgrade afterwards Right?

I'd definitely advise using @hawkerpaul's ROM and kernel nuke scripts.....and I'd probably try to get an older CWM flashed before flashing the 'older' ROM too......the older CWM is not compatible with KK, so is it possible that the newer CWM is not compatible with pre KK ROMs?.....I don't know the answer to that, but I personally wouldn't risk it......

[Q] How to go back to Stock

Hi there,
I have the 16gb wifi Tab 10.1 (P750)
I have been running several different versions of CM9 and CM10- loved them, but now I am looking to sell my tablet to upgrade to something newer. I want to return it back to the stock system, and I am unsure of how to do that, or where to get the builds from. I want to update it to the ICS build and then sell it that way.
Can any of you point me to a resource that explains this process, or help me out in some way.
Thanks so much!

have you looked here?
look on samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-P7500 or samfirmware.com
and flash again with odin.
I'm a noob interested in this.
When you flash a stock rom with odin what happen to the recovery and bootloader you have manually modified before installing a custom rom (for ex. CM10)? Do they revert to stock or stay modified?
Thanks.

[Q] SGSII heating a lot while doing regular tasks

Hallo everyone!
So since a week ago i'm a proud owner of Samsung Galaxy S2 (yay!).
It had Android 2.3.5 at the beginning so 2 days ago i've updated it to ICS (4.0.3). I've updated it via ODIN (since it couldn't find updates via KIES or by air) with a official ROM (if that's what it's called) from samfirmware.
Since then my phone heats up a lot more compared to 2.3.5 , i don't know how's that possible but i haven't installed any new apps or used the phone differently since the update. I know it's normal to heat up when playing games but even if i'm browsing the web it heats up a lot. I haven't this problem with 2.3.5
Any suggestions?
Go back to 2.3.5 and wait for JB.Or try custom rom.

So it's a common issue?
Hmm.. This is weird.. I'm having the same issue, but I'm having it with JellyBean ROMs.
For ICS the combination that works for me best is Cyanogenmod 9.1 and Siyah Kernel. If that still heats up, you might want to try some different modem and check out if any of them works for you. I think the stock XXKH3 modem helps.

As you might red above i'm a total newb to Android world atm , i just learned how to flash few days ago, i'm not going to mess with new modems etc. (for now). Do you guys think that if i upgrade to that leaked 4.1.2 , that might fix the problem? Also i didn't do factory reset after the upgrade to 4.0.3 because some other user from other forum told me that if i install the official 4.0.3 rom from Samsung - there's no need to do factory reset.
I would have done a factory reset, but thats just me.ICS was overheating my wifes phone, but it was the 4.0.4 thats worst.
If you are flashing modems, you should root first and backup your efs folder......and make a nand backup.

As i mentioned i won't be flashing modems and such. What would you suggest me to do from that point (aside from downgrading)?
You can only downgrade to GB.I detest ICS(rootbox was ok),so I went back to GB.
But now I use vanilla rootbox(JB) with dorimanx kernel.
Only problem Ive seen with this so far is the bloody volumes far too loud when I press keys(had to switch it off).
Anyway, whatever you do make sure you get rooted and backup your efs folder.
So i just upgraded to JB and we'll see how's it going.

UPDATE: So i've upgraded to 4.1.2 (JellyBean) , haven't installed any apps and for about 10 min. of browsing the web it jumped from 31°C to 37°C. What should be the average temperature of SGSII while using it (not playing games)?

False!
leaked stock JellyBean is out there. Official is not released.
And for the thread starter, search the forums. It's not hard to find how to root and start flashing your phone.

Stop asking FAQ and go read the guides or use search. Obviously you're not going to be the first person to ask this so stop expecting people to repeat answers.

He didnt say it was. Even so, the rom was "released" to testers, and "leaked" to public. Only final is released to public.

This to me seems that Ben101 says "Stock jelly bean is still not released", which krayndr then declares "False!"
I work in software; I differentiate between a leak and a release. "Released to testers" is not a release. We send many builds to testers before we have a release candidate.

Not sure why you're directing this question to me; is it because I said I work in software? That doesn't mean I work in developing software specifically for this device, or even for Samsung devices in general...
But if you're having issue with a leaked firmware, doesn't it make sense to go back to a released firmware?

yes, u can do So ma8
but why we prefer GB > ICS > JB is that ur installation goes smooth without any issue and also rooting ICS is much easier (since lot of option's to do so) rather with GB.
but the choice is urs
PS- regarding EMMC bug it comes only with the stock kernel of ICS 4.0.4, while ICS 4.0.3 is safe from the same(EMMC bug)

Hi
First of all you need to root the phone. The best way to do that would be to flash cf-root compatible with your rom version. You can find exactly what your build is by checking settings > about phone
Find compatible cf-root kernel and put it in PDA in odin and flash... there are lot's of guides out there - won't be hard to find
Second, before you go further you need yoo updete your bootloader. So either flash ICS stock through odin (not recommended cause will unroot again) or flash bootloader through odin. Again there are proper guides for that...
Then you can upgrade to whatever you want...
Keep in mind that emmc cap bug does not exist in GB kernels. so you can use the CWM recovery in cf-root kernels for GB rather safely.
If you update to stock ICS then you need to keep an eye what kernel you're using to wipe data. Siyah and dorimanx are safe and I always use them.
Loads of roms out there, pure aosp, cm based, aokp based and the leaked sammy rom. Personally checked alot of each first three and also several versions of the leaked one... All good.
Word of edvice - do read more on those things. No matter how much expirience people who answer threads like that have, you'll never substitute your own knowledge and expirience.
Go on and root and enjoy the android world, mate. Best of luck

[Q] Samsung galaxy s2 firmware problem

Hi there,
I have the galaxy s2 from about a year ago, bought it form Dubai. Anyways till now I still didn't get the jelly beans update 4.1.2 and I'm stuck with the 4.0.3. I'm starting to face some problems with my device and I think this is because bugs in the 4.0.3, the device over heats while charging or when I have my wifi or 3G on. I downloaded the "AOKP MR1 Milestone 1 ROM for Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 (Exynos)" along with "Gapps" but didn't install them yet:
The only problem is that in order to install the new rom I have to flash my device and root it and I'm not really happy with that. Is there a safe way to get the jelly beans update 4.1.2 without rooting my device. I tried the over the air update but it said no updates found, I also tried kies and still no luck. What can I do to get the new update without having to erase everything on my device.
Also can I take a backup copy of my ROM in case I format "flash" my device for any reason. I want to take a complete backup of everything on my phone including the unrooted original firmware 4.0.3 that it came with so that even if I install any other rom I can flash it and get back with my original one, is this possible.
Please help, looking forward for your repiles

Didn't mean to bother or bug anyone here, it's just that I'm very new to this

Thanks I'll check it out, what do I look for so I can make sure that it's compatible with my GT-I9100 device, or are they all compatible depending on which region I choose. Currently I'm in Egypt So whats the best firmware to download
Get whatever ROM you want.
Worst case, flash a new modem.
Sent from the little guy
Lsw is the new one. Uk base but as gastonw said it dont matter just download your modem you have now so you can restore it later "apriliam3 for them". To root get a dori ics kernel and flash that either with odin "tar" or in recovery "zip with sig" put on ext sd and update in stock recovery and that will give you root and cwm recovery when you have done that go back into recovery and do a nandroid bk up there. Get titanium back up in playstore and bk up your apps with. I link my contact's with google so they restore easily.
Just see chow to flash ROM's witch odin and choose ROM from Samsung development sub forum.
Thank you all for your replies,
I managed to root my device and advised by all of you, and I made backup using the cwm that was installed automatically after I successfully rooted it. In the backup folder that was created I noticed a file called "system.ext4.tar" is this the original android version that came with the phone because as I mentioned above I want to be on the safe side and have a backup of my original OS that came with the phone in case of anything went wrong then I can restore everything including the original current android version. Second step that I want to do is to flash my phone and install the jellybeans. I found two version version 4.1.2 which I know is compatible with the phone and version 4.2.2 but I'm not really sure if it's compatible or not. So what do you guys suggest I should install on my device
looking forward for your replies

[Q] Should I upgrade EFS?

Hi,
I'm currently running Paranoid 3.97 (I think), but the phone is currently acting up. I'm stuck in the loading screen, so I thought perhaps I could use the chance to flash a more recent rom. I can't remember the exact baseband version, but it uses "EFS 1".
When flashing newer roms, such as Temasek's 4.4 or CM10.2 stable, would I have to upgrade to EHF 2 first? If so, would I need to flash a stock rom first, so as to upgrade the EFS, and then flash a new baseband (if not already included in the stock rom)?
If I don't have to, are there any real benefits of doing so? Or should I just use the EFS and baseband I am currenly on and forget about it?
If no to the above; would it make sense to flash the latest stock rom anyways (I guess 4.1.2 with EHF2) or is that just a waste of time?
Thank you in advance for any assistance!

AOSP roms do not touch modem/baseband and efs.
You'll fine.
"Trouble" lies in stock roms newer than MG4 (inclusive)
Thank you for clarifying.
Would there otherwise be any benefits of upgrading EFS and baseband?
