Hi,
I'm currently running Paranoid 3.97 (I think), but the phone is currently acting up. I'm stuck in the loading screen, so I thought perhaps I could use the chance to flash a more recent rom. I can't remember the exact baseband version, but it uses "EFS 1".
When flashing newer roms, such as Temasek's 4.4 or CM10.2 stable, would I have to upgrade to EHF 2 first? If so, would I need to flash a stock rom first, so as to upgrade the EFS, and then flash a new baseband (if not already included in the stock rom)?
If I don't have to, are there any real benefits of doing so? Or should I just use the EFS and baseband I am currenly on and forget about it?
If no to the above; would it make sense to flash the latest stock rom anyways (I guess 4.1.2 with EHF2) or is that just a waste of time?
Thank you in advance for any assistance!

AOSP roms do not touch modem/baseband and efs.
You'll fine.
"Trouble" lies in stock roms newer than MG4 (inclusive)
Thank you for clarifying.
Would there otherwise be any benefits of upgrading EFS and baseband?

None at all.
Allright, thanks again. I'll let it be, then!

So i rooted by flashing, via odin, CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEF_KJ2-v5.0-CWM5 over the stock 2.3.6 rom from kies update. I then flashed cm7.1 stable successfully after a nandroid backup of the original rom.
Now question is, if i perform a cwm backup, do i get back to stock rom, with my apps intact?
Another question about kernel: My kernel version doesnt have I9100XXXX in it, how do i pick a kernel version if i wana change/update my kernel with cf-root?
Thanks for the answers .
just restore from nandroid backup and everything will be as it was when you did backup
restore backup or reflash it
Thanks for the answers, any thoughts on the second question?

what kernel have you got? what kernel you want to have?
I managed to flash siyah kernel successfully with no crashes and what not. but one problem persists: when i start the phone everything is ok, but after i lock then unlock, display quality drops and everything becomes grainy, poorly drawn and somewhat pixelated. Anybody has an idea about that?
Should i just flash another kernel all together? what do you recommend with cm 7.1? I read somewhere about the stock cm7.1 kernel, where could i get that?
Seriously sorry for so much questions, but i think you can see how the issue is bugging me. Big Thank you for answers..
Hi guys,
I have a question. I have an S3 with the MG4 ROM and I want to upgrade it to Cyanogen Mod 10.1 (Android 4.2.2)
How can I do that safely? Because, from what I've seen, if I leave this ROM, I won't be able to use my phone for calls, texts, since the EFS partition has changed.
Thanks in advance

Its not if you leave the rom. Its if you change the baseband to an older one. Flashing CM will fine as it does not change the baseband Just be aware that stock roms with older basebands will need you to reflash the MG4 or newer basedband.
I wrote a whole thread about this in General > Sticky roll up

So.. basically I can't flash an older ROM, as it changes the baseband. That's just it?

No. You CAN flash an older ROM, but if it comes with an older baseband, you must then flash a newer baseband. Its all covered.

Hello.
I had problems with my EFS folder and IMEI.
Now i got it all back and running the Official Android 4.3 Firmware I9300XXUGMK6-DBT
But now i want to go back to custom roms ( Paranoidandroid ).
With the update to EMG4 Android changed the EFS folder.
That was the problem why i lost my IMEI.
What can i do, to get custom roms back !?
Everytime i flash ParanoidAndroid i dont get MobileNetworks.
nobody can help?

In my experience, if you are back and running then search for efs backup/restore programs and backup your efs with as many of them as you can. Save them on your computer as well! Since you are on 4.3 and on the MG4 modem or newer, you are free to flash any custom rom you want, just dont flash a 4.1.2 custom rom or even a 4.2.2 as they will cause problems with your imei. Flash only 4.3 or higher
I'm currently on Biftor ROM (a 4.1.2 ROM) but would like to try out a 4.4.2 ROM.
If I flash the 4.4.2 ROM is it easy to revert back with a nandroid, I ask as I am aware past 4.2 there are file locations differences etc and downgrading/upgrading from such can be problematic and 'things can go a miss' or dir's multiplied.
I don't want to revert back to 4.1.2 and find a host of file dir that weren't there before or mixed up dir's or a corrupt dir/file system(s).
As for 4.3 and 4.4 ROM's I am unsure if they suffer the same problems as 4.2.
I haven't flashed an alternative ROM in ages and even then never past 4.1.2.
Any advice?

I've seen comments where people say they've gone from custom 4.2.2 to 4.4 without flashing back to stock, so I can't see a reason why you go directly from 4.1.2 to 4.4.2.....
The only thing to watch for is you more than likely will have to flash the latest cwm before you start. Older cwm's give 'status 7 installation aborted' messages if they're used to flash custom KK.........
that shouldn't be a problem though...... @infected_s KK builds link you to the latest cwm in the OP.......
As always.....read the OP in full and probably the last 10 pages of comments on the dedicated threads so that you are familiar with the flash instructions and have an idea of the issues (if any) that the ROMs users are facing.......
This might be my S2 or it might be my W, but it's definitely CM...
But I thought he was asking for downgrading, not for upgrading.. (Not that I know the answer, as I also never gone further than 4.1.2.)
Lol....second line of the OP....hr wants to try out 4.4.2....

Yes I know, he wants to upgrade to 4.4, but only if it is possible to downgrade afterwards Right?

Right )) so is it possibly to downgrade to 4.1.2 if I don't like 4.4.2, without problems to dir's etc once reverted back to 4.1.2?

I'd definitely advise using @hawkerpaul's ROM and kernel nuke scripts.....and I'd probably try to get an older CWM flashed before flashing the 'older' ROM too......the older CWM is not compatible with KK, so is it possible that the newer CWM is not compatible with pre KK ROMs?.....I don't know the answer to that, but I personally wouldn't risk it......

Hi, there.
I would like to flash a Touchwiz Based 4.4.4 ROM for the International Version of Galaxy S3 (i9300). Currently it is running Android 4.1.2 stock rooted and TWRP installed.
So I wanted to ask aside from the regular flashing procedure if there is any other precaution to be taken.
I will definitely update to TWRP 2.8.6.1. Please let me know if any other file is to be flashed so as to avoid Bricking.
For Eg. Modems, Bootloaders or any other such files. Also feel free to suggest a 4.4 T/W Rom
Thank You.

Make a back up of your current rom, back up everything you need, wipe factory reset in recovery and install 4.4.4.
Make sure to read the instructions in the OP of the rom you want to install eg blekota note4

Thanks for replying sir. But are you 100% sure that I will not have to flash any modem before flashing Blekota. I've seen a lot of problems of people out here. Some losing EFS. Some losing IMEI. I do not doubt you at all but I would like to exercise precaution on my behalf.
Also My current Baseband Version as it appears in the Settings is DDELK1. So do I need to update it ? Also I won't have problems like Losing My IMEI or Simcard not being detected, Right ?
Thanks Again.
@x0nar: you're right. Flashing a custom-ROM with modem MG4 or newer will mess up your IMEI /net access. So go back to old firmware, fe ELLA, and update via OTA or KIES to JB 4.3. This changes your efs-data version 1 into version 2. Make sure, you have a modem N** afterwards. The you can root again and flash KK or LP-ROM.

Never Mind. Already ****ed it up. Flashed Blekota and initially I lost my IMEI. Flashed MJ3 Modem recovered it but no network. Says only Emergency calls Available.
Also flashed MG2 still no progress yet. And you know what the biggest problem is ? The device does not even belong to me. My friend requested me to update it and I messed it up. Any recourse ? The area of my residence is India. Could you please tell me which modem to flash ?.
Thanks
@x0nar: sad. Maybe your efs-data are currupt now. My only suggestion is to flash ELLA-firmware, hoping that OTA-update or KIES rewrite them.
The only right thing in the naive advice of Siberian Tiger is to make a backup. Did you? Then restore 1st.

Yeah. I did an EFS Backup. Even after restoring, the IMEI still was reflecting "Unknown".
But Never Mind, fortunately it gained a revival after Flashing the MJ3 Radio. However it would not connect to Mobile Network. So I flashed several other Radios and it's all set now and everything works just fine. Thanks for your help
@x0nar: then you belong to the lucky few, fine. But I meant a full backup of /boot, /system, /data. Do this before you experiment with KK.
