Hi guys,
I have a question. I have an S3 with the MG4 ROM and I want to upgrade it to Cyanogen Mod 10.1 (Android 4.2.2)
How can I do that safely? Because, from what I've seen, if I leave this ROM, I won't be able to use my phone for calls, texts, since the EFS partition has changed.
Thanks in advance

Its not if you leave the rom. Its if you change the baseband to an older one. Flashing CM will fine as it does not change the baseband Just be aware that stock roms with older basebands will need you to reflash the MG4 or newer basedband.
I wrote a whole thread about this in General > Sticky roll up

So.. basically I can't flash an older ROM, as it changes the baseband. That's just it?

No. You CAN flash an older ROM, but if it comes with an older baseband, you must then flash a newer baseband. Its all covered.

Questions like: what kernel, what baseband, got drunk and bricked my phone.... HERE
OK, first q: can someone post Neocore results on F1 and 06.12 franco`s kernel?
Baseband question: i'm on the new baseband (was on stock 2.3, then flashed to openoptimus). I really like the look of some of these .32 kernels and roms but everything says its for old baseband.
Can i go back to the old baseband? Is there a thread somewhere? Is it safe? From my own investigation, it looks to me like I don't go back to the old baseband, but rather flash some patch to make the roms work anyway. Sound right?

It is safe, and you will not have data(2G/3G) working if you don't have it
Most of us are on old baseband, and also most of us had new baseband

Sorry dude I don't quite understand your response. Is there anything I have to do, or just flash the rom and it will be OK?

It won't be OK. If your phone uses the "new" baseband, ROMs made for the "old" baseband will work on your phone (as in flashing will be successful, the phone boots etc.) and everything works except for the most important thing in a phone: the GSM/UMTS module. Which means you won't be able to connect to your mobile network and won't be able to make and receive calls. Bummer. Now, there's a patch that solves this BUT something will still be missing: mobile data. You will be able to make and receive phone calls, but you won't be able to connect to the internet using the mobile data connection (only WiFi).
So, if you want to use a ROM that clearly states it's made for the old baseband, old baseband is what you must have on your phone in order for both calls and internet to work. How to tell which baseband do you have right now it's a different discussion and we'll get there if necessary. I just detailed vlt86's answer for you to understand.
EDIT: I see you already know what baseband you have - the new one. Follow voyager20021's link in order to find out how to return to the old one.

There is a easier way for new base band users just flash mik's baseband patch

I tried flashing mik's patch on F1 and GSM did not work; only IMEI was read, but no access to SIM card. Is mik patch only for A serie (0.32 kernel) ?

So i want to try cm9 on my p509. I've tried many times to upgrade the baseband, but whenever i do i get no gsm and my imei disappears. trust me i've followed the guide EXACTLY. so i just stick with old bb. I want to flash to this cm9 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614420. My question is if i flash this rom will it brick my phone (because i'm on old bb). if it won't then can someone post a link to a old bb fix so i can get data working on my phone when i flash it. I need this info urgently because i'm about to travel in a few hours and want to flash before i do. Thank you!
It will not brick your phone, and I haven't the FIX yet.
I'm searching for it now

that what i've been doing, but it never works properly
i've followed all the directions, and it doesn't work. i downloaded the v20 file and extracted with winzip to update to v20.
Do you've restored the NV2-file after flashing the new baseband?
Just a note, try not to mess around with nv2 it can create such a hasle in the end

I think, it doesn't work. The ROM boots, but you have no signal etc. Even restore a nandroidbackup doesn't downgrade the baseband.

Why would he need to downgrade
Both cm7.2 and cm9 run on new baseband, right?
Though not sure what restoring nandroid will do in this case as then it would have old-bb fix on new baseband:cyclops:
yeah i hear ya. so is it reccomended that i reflash cm 7.2 so then i coulld stay on new baseband? then it would be easier for me to flash roms for new bb right?
okay... i am gonna explain this and hope i am right..sry for big post
Our phone has many partitions like(system, data, boot, recovery, cache, etc)
The mbn files that you see in P500-v20G-baseband.7z are partition images(or pieces of it or bin file or something similar....am not sure)
Now to install a custom rom, you format system, data, cache(or boot too in some cases) and then flash the rom, which basically copies new files to these partitions.
SO,custom rom does not affect other partitions present on your phone.
However when you install stock through kdz, it basically wipes your whole phone and install each partition again(including the one containing baseband). So, after installing a kdz...you are stuck with that baseband no matter which rom you install through recovery unless you install a kdz again with diff baseband.
The lgmdp method only changes the partition containing baseband (amss.mbn). So,again custom roms have no effect on baseband.
Now, to answer your ques.

No, you dont need to reflash any other rom. You ARE on new baseband now and can flash any rom for new bb and it will work.
Note:All info above may or may not be entirely correct. Its just how i think it works.:good:

4.2.2 is way older! the imei issue definitely raises after flashing it when downgrading from the roms released after july! samsung currently paused the 4.3 firmware for S3 and will resume sometime later!

or else can i try 4.2.2 with flashing mg2 modem.

Download ktool to back up your efs so you can restore if you lose your imei also install i file manager and run it under root and copy the whole efs folder just for good measure then back all this up to your computer

back up your efs every time before flashing. go through this link for any imei queries: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2393289
yes you can flash 4.3 based roms. they will have issues but minimized by the developers. no custom rom should be expected to be 100% perfect as the base itself has some bugs(you know). good luck
Rom
just flash rom and wipe it is easy
Hi,
I'm currently running Paranoid 3.97 (I think), but the phone is currently acting up. I'm stuck in the loading screen, so I thought perhaps I could use the chance to flash a more recent rom. I can't remember the exact baseband version, but it uses "EFS 1".
When flashing newer roms, such as Temasek's 4.4 or CM10.2 stable, would I have to upgrade to EHF 2 first? If so, would I need to flash a stock rom first, so as to upgrade the EFS, and then flash a new baseband (if not already included in the stock rom)?
If I don't have to, are there any real benefits of doing so? Or should I just use the EFS and baseband I am currenly on and forget about it?
If no to the above; would it make sense to flash the latest stock rom anyways (I guess 4.1.2 with EHF2) or is that just a waste of time?
Thank you in advance for any assistance!

AOSP roms do not touch modem/baseband and efs.
You'll fine.
"Trouble" lies in stock roms newer than MG4 (inclusive)
Thank you for clarifying.
Would there otherwise be any benefits of upgrading EFS and baseband?

Hi, there.
I would like to flash a Touchwiz Based 4.4.4 ROM for the International Version of Galaxy S3 (i9300). Currently it is running Android 4.1.2 stock rooted and TWRP installed.
So I wanted to ask aside from the regular flashing procedure if there is any other precaution to be taken.
I will definitely update to TWRP 2.8.6.1. Please let me know if any other file is to be flashed so as to avoid Bricking.
For Eg. Modems, Bootloaders or any other such files. Also feel free to suggest a 4.4 T/W Rom
Thank You.

Make a back up of your current rom, back up everything you need, wipe factory reset in recovery and install 4.4.4.
Make sure to read the instructions in the OP of the rom you want to install eg blekota note4

Thanks for replying sir. But are you 100% sure that I will not have to flash any modem before flashing Blekota. I've seen a lot of problems of people out here. Some losing EFS. Some losing IMEI. I do not doubt you at all but I would like to exercise precaution on my behalf.
Also My current Baseband Version as it appears in the Settings is DDELK1. So do I need to update it ? Also I won't have problems like Losing My IMEI or Simcard not being detected, Right ?
Thanks Again.
@x0nar: you're right. Flashing a custom-ROM with modem MG4 or newer will mess up your IMEI /net access. So go back to old firmware, fe ELLA, and update via OTA or KIES to JB 4.3. This changes your efs-data version 1 into version 2. Make sure, you have a modem N** afterwards. The you can root again and flash KK or LP-ROM.

Never Mind. Already ****ed it up. Flashed Blekota and initially I lost my IMEI. Flashed MJ3 Modem recovered it but no network. Says only Emergency calls Available.
Also flashed MG2 still no progress yet. And you know what the biggest problem is ? The device does not even belong to me. My friend requested me to update it and I messed it up. Any recourse ? The area of my residence is India. Could you please tell me which modem to flash ?.
Thanks
@x0nar: sad. Maybe your efs-data are currupt now. My only suggestion is to flash ELLA-firmware, hoping that OTA-update or KIES rewrite them.
The only right thing in the naive advice of Siberian Tiger is to make a backup. Did you? Then restore 1st.

Yeah. I did an EFS Backup. Even after restoring, the IMEI still was reflecting "Unknown".
But Never Mind, fortunately it gained a revival after Flashing the MJ3 Radio. However it would not connect to Mobile Network. So I flashed several other Radios and it's all set now and everything works just fine. Thanks for your help
@x0nar: then you belong to the lucky few, fine. But I meant a full backup of /boot, /system, /data. Do this before you experiment with KK.
