So a random moderator on a forum that has no direct connection to Sony (i.e he doesn't work for Sony) says KK will probably be released at some point. That's not news.

He said Maybe after 4.3 is released for the SP etc so that would be early February?
Yes, but we already knew that. Sony said that 4.4 for the Z1 and ZU is scheduled to be released in January/February, so this isn't news.

I've got an interesting question. Once Kitkat has been officially released by Sony, would obtaining root be fairly easy?
Or would it be a mission like on current 4.3 firmwares where we have to downgrade, root, flash, etc?
I'm still on 4.2 and will not bother upgrading until Kitkat has been released and obtaining root is done by a one click procedure.
If anything it'll be harder to root
And you would more then likely have to downgrade etc

What Jack said
There is a slight conflict here, you want an easy root path, but you want a secure phone that no one can hijack. If there is a one click root tool then there can just as easily be a 'no click' root exploit that you dont even know has been un on your phone and the writer/hacker now has full control of your phone - see the problem?
The way Sony wants us to do it (and the best security model for us and them) is to unlock the bootloader and install recovery to flash our phones - this is what we do now except we do the extra steps of running a root exploit so we can latter restore our bootloader/TA to a factory state

Doh! I take it it's best I stay with 4.2 and firmware 532 for now...
There's not much of an advantage for me to update to 4.3. I already tried and saw no noticeable improvements...

I understand. What you said makes sense. I previously used Vroot to root previously like most others but after hearing rumours that were apparently true, I no longer used it. As you mentioned they may be stealing our imei numbers and taking control over our phones violating our privacy...
Since Kitkat 4.4 is around the corner, I won't bother updating to 290 Firmware. Who knows, we may need to downgrade and flash to root Kitkat.
As long as we have an unlocked bootloader root is easy
hmmm.i remembered that when the nexus 5 came in..they got it rooted fast.since the software securities of 4.4 is almost(if not the same) with 4.3..but who am i to say..im just a simple guy passing through... but hey, we already have a working kitkat rom for ZU..so why wait? *smiling

You're the second swede in here that haven't received 4.3, and since both Norway and Denmark received it a month ago, I'll conclude that Sony hates Sweden Sony and Ericsson did break up after all, so I guess Sony doesn't want to go back there and risk bumping into Ericsson. Awkward.
I assume you've checked PCC for the update, and that you haven't changed your CDA to a country that haven't received the update (a mistake I did).

Why??
He's trolling (as usual). My guess is that we'll get it at the same time as the Z1 considering we've received the previous updates at the same time as the Z1. We'll see CM 10.3 (4.4) or ParanoidAndroid (4.4) way before Sony releases anything though, so if you want 4.4 as quick as possible, then keep an eye on CM or other custom ROMs a couple of weeks after Google's 4.4 release.

I agree. Unfortunately, I heard Sony Mobile Communications didn't make the tablet (Sony Electronics apparently did) and the Electronics division doesn't seem to want to update the tablet or even release AOSP builds for it unlike Mobile Communications.
they suck so badly! I regret for buying it >_<
Sony have washed their hands of these devices. XTS was lucky to get 4.1. STS was forgotten 1 year ago with 4.0.3 . XTZ will be supported for a long time as there will be developer support through unlocked bootloader etc
XTZ will get Kitkat, we wont though. Im still dreaming of 4.2.2, but i doubt we will ever get it. Thinking of trying to sell my XTS next week..
Only way ts and xts owners will ever get anything else is buy buying something new!!!

I dont really mind though.......I have an occasional wifi drop out on 290 but nothing else serious. Also with my ZU I have held back on root/unlocking bootloader just because............it kinda does everything well without root! I remember a video by Adrian that eventually android would get to such a stage that root wouldn't be needed anymore (apart from customization). Maybe we are seeing the first step of that with sonys firmware? Obviously touchwiz, sense etc are different but Sony is pretty close to stock.

Yeah, KK has been in the testing phase for some time now, but we don't know where in the process they are. I really wish Sony had an awesome site like HTC when it comes to updates. It doesn't say when it will get released, but it gives its users some hints (imaged bellow).
HTC also made an infographic about their update procedures, and i guess most Android OEMs have to go through all of this, so my guess is that Sony is pretty far down the list, and it's only a matter of days/week until we get KK.
Edit: Just remembered that Sony is unveiling some new stuff at MWC later today/tomorrow, and i guess we'll see the Sony "Sirius" (Z2) with Kit Kat, so again, we'll get it very soon.
Hope they release it with different ui so I will not feel bored with my bored phone?

There's a 12 minute long video of the Z2 out there which goes through pretty much everything, and there is a fair bit of change there. I can't remember everything, or anything at all, but do expect "tap to wake", new launcher(s), other new or changed UI elements, and let's not forget that KitKat runs much better than 4.3, since it's minimum requirement is down at 512MB RAM.
It's not the biggest OS update ever, but there are some nice little details there that makes it awesome.
Here's the 12 minute video I'm talking about. I know it's kind of weird to watch a video of a leaked device that has been publicly announced now, but it's a nice video for us to see what we can expect to see in our own KitKat build.

I have searched all over. But i haven't found a single "easy" way to root the latest firmware. Rooting on Samsung phones etc. is really easy. Why is it so complicated on Sony? For every new firmware, there is downgrading involved or it's all related to bootloader unlocking. That's not easy for most people here. I see this issue with every new Xperia phone. The older ones had easy methods. Did Sony increase security or something?

Do you know why Microsoft kept releasing a bugfix update now and then for Windows OS? Yes that's because there are security hole that can be attacked by hacker. Now Android on itself is not a platform built with security in the first place, so each manufacturer needs to protect their business (read: minimizing return rate caused by user fault) by securing their devices. It is easy for Samsung to be rooted (read: hacked) because they don't develop a security bugfix for them. I don't know about KNOX equipped device but if we count the news that Blackberry is still the number one the most secured device for the White House instead of Samsung now you can see why. It is harder to hack Sony too, because of its unremovable battery nature.
It actually is much clearer with Sony, that if you are willing to root, then void your warranty. If not just let Sony take care of your problems and keeping the warranty intact. Plus with recent Android build, there's less a motivation to do root anyway to operate the phone on daily basis.
So no i disagree if you put Samsung as the better company just because of its less secured ROM. Plus rather than whining, a contribution to hack Sony's ROM would be more useful. Don't wait, try it yourself to see how hard it is to break Sony's ROM.

I was just curious as to why it's easier and harder in different cases. You don't have to call me whiny for that. Also i didn't call samsung a better company. I am a long time Sony user and have used three of their phones yet. I could root the former ones, Live and SP, easily. But rooting on Ultra is QUITE a hassle.
And my question was if they increased security as i am curious about this. And believe me, if i knew as much as NUT and DoomLord about android development, i'd have tried. However my knowledge is rather limited. Knox equipped devices are also easy to root by the way. It took me 5 minutes to root a Note 3. But that's not my point. I think android should be more accessible as it IS open source. And if i judge phones based on ease of rooting, i'd have gone for Samsung but we both know that is never a deciding factor. Having root is a plus point.

Are you sure that SP is easy to root? Well maybe because it was started with 4.1.2 so it is an old firmware to get started. On Ultra, the situation is more or less the same with all the Z series.
I agree with the stance that Android should be more easier to root (or in fact why don't they bake superuser from the beginning of time, just like Windows administrator account?). But maybe it's like all or nothing solution. Plus a smartphone is not a geek's dream anymore, so more casual people to use it compared to a computer, which bring us to avoiding Linux complexities for the masses. That being said, Sony does really enforce the security aspect of their devices. It's not a coincidence to hear the Xperia For Business Program was launched recently after all the latest firmware update got rolled.
So basically Sony is increasing the security. Thank you for your time.

Yes i know unlocking is easy. VERY easy but. But i'd like to keep my partition intact. Which means going to a previous rootable firmware, then to root it, backup TA and then to unlock bootloader. Then i have to upgrade again and root.
Can anyone tell me which firmware version can be rooted normally on Z Ultra (involves no downgrading from that version)?

The .532 firmware is the one to root, see my downgrade thread for less headaches with IMEI.
Once you have backed up the TA and unlocked the bootloader there is no need to downgrade or do odd things again. All you have to do is update via FTF, flash kernel/recovery and then flash SuperSU/superuser from recovery.
Admittedly we do have to wait for a kernel to be released that has RIC disabled, but that is normally only a day or 3 after the firmware release (the same fix is needed on Z1/Z2 so comes quite fast)
Okay thank you. I shall wait for a while longer then
