[Q] Need help with first time rooting. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
So I've just rooted my SII and have even recovered it from softbricking it when I installed the wrong kernel... Now I am looking for a custom ROM to finally get the type of customization I want from my phone. However since I have softbricked it so easily, I am now weary of installing any ROM that might fit my phone's specifications.
I am a rooky in rooting, but I have noticed that when selecting a new ROM you have to bear in mind the current kernel version, firmware and android version of my current phone. However I do not know what to look for to see if this ROM fits my phone's preferences and I was hoping one of you could help me with this issue. I'm looking for a highly customizable ROM that will speed up my phone and give me improved battery life. The one I thought would do the trick is: NeatRom.
Can someone tell me what is important to look for when selecting a ROM and if the NeatRom I selected is fit for my device.
My device:
Model: SGSII GT-i9100
Android version: 4.1.2
Firmware: I9100XXMS4
Kernelversion: [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Wed Sep 25 18:29:28 KST 2013
Buildnr.: JZO54K.I9100XWMS1
Thank you!

You can use NeatROM for your device.
Look in the op of that thread and follow the steps you need to do.
On second hand. You need help with rooting? Because you said that your phone is rooted.

Thank you for your reply!
I have just succesfully installed this ROM. Pretty happy with the result untill google apps decided to start downloading all the bloatware back onto my device! Now there is no way to delete it. Not having bloatware was one of the reasons I decided to root my phone and install this ROM. I recon it is because I sync my Google account with my device so its starts downloading al the crap as soon as the installation is done.
Do you know how to undo the installation of the bloatware? Or some other way to prevent google apps from downloading all those horrible apps?

You flash gapps after you flash the rom. So it's probably updating those apps. Maybe there other gapps packages for neatrom.
For instance my gapps package for slimsaber is only 56mb.
To uninstall these apps there are 2 options.
1. Settings - apps - slide to everything - here are all you apps. Most bloatware can be deleted.
2. apps are in /system/app (system apps) and /data/app (user apps) here you can deleted the apk's. But be very carefull because removing the wrong apk can make your system unstable.
My opinion is if you don't know what all apps are and what there for/doing, stick to option 1.

Mod Edit
"Best" ROM/kernel threads are not allowed on XDA.
Please test these things for yourself.
This is the only way you will get an unbiased opinion, and then, you can decide for yourself if it meets YOUR needs.

[Q] Do you guys know a thing about this phone?

Hi, I'm new to this website and was wondering if you can help me. Ive got an android phone with FROYO 2.2. Ive search all over the internet for custom ROMs and updates for my phone but no luck. By the way, my phone is called Cherry Mobile Candy.
About phone:
Model Number: L102
Android Version: 2.2.1
Baseband Version: MAUI.10A.W10.48.MP.V5.F1, 2011/01/27 16:48
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9
[email protected]#1
Mon Oct 17 17:06:18 CST 2011
Build Number: L102-M24.Cherry.l3.BT.FM.WF.42.V006
If I'm missing something please feel free to suggest anything. I really want to try out some custom roms for my phone or updates to boost it up. Thank you.
I don't think you can find any custom ROM for this device, it's a low category Android Phone. But the best quality of Android it's his portability, so you can try to give some informations on porting Android for this device.
Yes your'e right its a low end phone. What benefits i can get if do that Android porting your'e saying?
so can i get an update with this phone?
Porting is a sort of manual building of a ROM for your device. For example my Gio support Gingerbread but not ICS officially, but there are guys that are working on the source of ICS and build the ROM for my device.
Android is open - source, so anyone can do this, whit the right skills.
Hey men, i really need your help!!. So this is how it goes,
Ive Downloaded Rom Manager. ive explored all of its contents, and i bumped to this Boot into recovery option. I tap it without knowing what will it do to my phone. Then the recovery screen appears, i scrolled down to clear all caches and then i choose yes, my phone turns on with no problem, But the thing is when i slide the unlock panel to unlock my phone, i just see a complete black screen, with the notification bar,(with time and the signal indicator) im not sure what to do with this.
As i search through the internet, my phone is not yet bricked, It can boot up to recovery mode, and the test mode. The dumbest decision ive made though, i did not make any backup of my system.
can you help me,sir? thank you,
Try factory resetting the phone.

Sure you can! ☺
You can run almost any version you want. I'm running kitkat 4.4.4 (the very latest version) on it now.
But you'll have to root it first and perhaps change the bootloader (I did) and install a custom recovery. After all this you can flash almost any ROM you want.
Have fun and Always make a backup!

OK Great, can you point me to where to get the instructions to do the rooting, change the bootloader, install the custom recovery and then the 4.44 upgrade?
I am asking about the rooting because I have see many different suggestions. It there a thread that describes each one of these processes?
Thanks

It is ever so simple to upgrade your tablet to CM10.1, look at http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_p4wifi (I assume it is a P7510 Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi version) to get the quick and easy method of getting Android 4.2.2 on your tablet from a very stable and reliable Custom ROM, superuser and more built-in by default. If ever it does not work for you, then you can always revert to Stock 4.0.4 from Samsung (see sammobile.com for downloads of stock recovery images. You will need to register for free to be able to download).
Hope this is the quick and easy way for you. If you want to go to KitKat 4.4.4, then the nameless (official nightly build) ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2716016 is where you want to start out. Please keep in mind that this release may still have some issues for the Tab, as it still is under development.
Your choice. But no need to root beforehand if you want to load a custom ROM, you only need a recovery manager (either CWM or TWRP, all to personal taste) loaded to continue. Mostly, just to make sure, do the bootloader-thing beforehand as the default Samsung bootloader hates both CMW and TWRP recovery mode, and you could end up with the infamous rolling screen problem.
My suggestion is to start with CM10.1 as that is almost a walk in the park, and the steps are both easy to follow and [almost] never fail.
Hope this makes it a bit clearer. Best of luck in your endeavours to get the stock bloatware off your tablet...
THANK YOU for the complete instructions. this is GREAT. I have several final questions before I try it.
My Tab has Kernal# 3.1.10 [email protected] - 116#2 SMPT PREEMPT Tues Aug 7 19:16:14 KST 2012
Is this process still OK and valid?
I want to be sure I fully understand the process:
1: I install a new bootLoader. WHERE is the code-file, and what is the process?
2: Do the Odlin3 method- Windows (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_p4wifi)
3: I perform the next step: "Installing CyanogenMod from recovery"
4: where do I find the "required Google Apps" as noted in the above "step three".
5: HOW to find and install 4.2.2, or what ever is the most stable OS for this Tab.
Is this process correct? If no please clarify
Sorry for all the "dumb" basic questions. ;(
Thanks

The process is defined for the p4wifi (i.e. P7510 Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the original Samsung WiFi only, not 3G).
If you have a tab2/tab3/note etc, then you need to navigate a bit there to find your machine. But most of the process is the same, just other binaries/ROM.
The bootloader download is mentioned in the Odin3 method (windows only) of this documentation, within step 1: download pershoots recovery package. Steps 2 to 8 there explain exactly how to start up odin, get your tablet into download mode and transfer the bootloader. Step 10 explains that your have to follow the same steps 2 to 8 to get the recovery tool installed on your tablet.
For the p4wifi the CM10.1 stable roms can be found at: http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=p4wifi
The applicable google apps can be downloaded from http://goo.im/gapps , where you have to load the one, related to the flavour. In your case the CM10.1, one (3rd line at this moment) of 20130812.
PLEASE NOTE: If your tablet is not the P7510 (Wifi), but, for example the P7500 (3G), then you might need a different bootloader, recovery mod and CM10.1
CM10.1 is 4.2.2, and has root built-in by default. This 4.2.2 also allows you to create more 'users' on the tablet, do all kinds of nice things, and can be finetuned to improve performance (like overclocking). All built-in by default.
Happy Hunting!
Hey, and don't apologise for asking dumb questions, we all started out asking questions, and this forum is really there to get people started on the path of getting the most out of their tablets. Keep on asking, and there is always somebody out there to help you out if you get stuck.
One advise: get the exact model-number of your tablet (build) and register at sammobile to get a plain stock recovery image, so you can always get back to the default setup, and not lose hope when your tablet gets 'bricked'. We have more than enough expensive doorstoppers in the world to need to add one more. Sammobile gives you the recovery image, base on model and country. These stock recovery images are about 450 MB, and can be restored easily with your big friend Odin (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2142268).
THANK YOU VERY MUCH for clarifying my questions and process. In my prior life I was a process engineer (semiconductors, and hydrogen fuel cells). Thus I like clear instructions. I also see now some of the challenges the web and forums like this one present, because links go dead, and new process and data are constantly being created. Thus the "process" is always in flux.
I think I can now go and try this.
Thanks
Rick McK

You are welcome. I myself have been a Software Engineer since the early seventies of the 20th century (40+ years of IT), and started out as Computer Operator loading punchcards and papertape into old IBM and UNIVAC computers. The world has changed dramatically since then. Not all good though...
Good luck, and always peruse XDA to get answers to your questions. Sometimes you have to trudge through a lot of mess, but the diamonds are there to find. And ask, ask, ask...

Read my whole post linked below. It is accurate. Do not upgrade to NG6, it is a pain and has root but no custom rom capability (yet). On NC5 however, you can flash a ROM using Safestrap (Do not use the safestrap linked in the thread below (3.72), use the safestrap in the general forum (3.75)). DO NOT FLASH TWRP OR CWM. We have a locked bootloader and flashing those is impossible as of yet.
With safestrap, you cannot flash CM, AOSP, or anything that contains a custom kernel. You can flash Hyperdrive, eclipse, and in rare cases Google Edition (The Safestrap version only!!! Not the normal Google edition!)

Build Info: Mon dec 23 21:28:58 kst 2013
how to root this kind of phone, help me please? thankyou
PhilZ-cwm6 which version
Hi,
I have a samsung gallaxy S2 and I am rather confused which version of PhilZ-cwm6 kernel to use. I am wanting to use the most current version possible and I am not sure what version that is nor kernel code. I am wanting to root stock android. When I flashed from stock ICS to JB I used the following offical rom XFC-I9100XWLSS-20130817002141.zip and see below for attached screenshot of my phone details, there are differences in the kernel numbers which is causing confusion. I hope that is all the info that is required. Thank you so much in advance for your reply.
hi all
i need to know which version of kernel best for rom >> I9100XWLSD << ?
I have a GS2 I9100XWLSW, suffering the EMMC brick bug. Still with original kernel, and recovery. Rooted with Framaroot.
I'd want to install Philz in order to install either Omnirom or Cyanogen.
I have seen in the Philz's original thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31310884&postcount=3 ) the link to my PDA version (v5.06.1 ). However on goo.im ( http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/i9100 ) I can find a higher updated version (v6.48.4), however this one has no description assuring me that's the correct file for PDA LSW. Is it, also considering my EMMC bug? Or maybe it's just the recovery, without the kernel? If that's the point, then WHERE I can find the latest kernel+recovery for my phone?
Also, which install method should I prefer: update through the zip file, or flash through Odin? First one seems easier, but I heard that it may have problems installing certain Cyanogen versions from the Philz's temporary recovery. I'd want to install Lollipop from either Omnirom or Cyano as soon as they become reasonably stable.. also, Philz v5.06.1 comes with CWM 6.0.3.2, but isn't CWM 6.0.4.4+ required to install KitKat or higher?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I also noticed that some zip files are marked LSW-XEU, while others are LSW-OXX.. how do I know which is mine? Actually the complete details of my phone are:
PDA: I9100XWLSW
PHONE: I9100XXMS3
CSC: I9100ITVLS2

Hi,
What you are looking for is the kernel code in the rom build. On mine I can see it under "About device" at the end of build number - I9100XWLSH, it is the XWLSH part you are looking for. You can also see it if you download terminal emulator from the playstore. Just run the terminal and type getprop and press enter. Scroll up until you find [ro.build.PDA]: this is the rom. Again it is the last part of this you need. Hope this helps

I'm not sure I understand, but if you are talking about the stock rom, you should get the latest version for your region. If you want a rooted version of stock I would choose one that has a modified kernel available from the ones @Phil3759 developed. That is, the ones under the latest version in the main thread

The listed files are not kernels, they are updated recoveries. To root your stock rom, you need to find the the kernel below the latest recoveries and match the rom to the kernel code as described in the main thread. You can then flash the latest recovery, then reboot into recovery if you want to for example flash a kitkat or lollipop rom. The older recovery embedded in the modified kernel won't be compatible with these later android versions

Rom for Samsung galaxy s2 I9100P
Hi,
I have attached my device screenshot. I am unable to choose the correct ROM according to the Kernel version. Requesting you to provide the link to the correct file i can choose to root the phone.
Thanks
Unbrick..
Download Philz Kernel in .tar format and instal it over Odin 3.0.7 ie than whwn boot up, download on ur internal or better external sd card kernel and recovery(sometimes it is the same one file) and restart ur mob in recovery and instal that new/old recovery which u previosly got before boot loop or bricking... than reinstal ur system or if u have backup just restore it,. Important part is that u need same Recovery u did before U braked up Ur system... Ask 4 more

" Hello,
Unfortunately, as of this time, the main portions of goo.im have been disabled. Due to a finance issue, our CDN account has been suspended, and all files stored on it are effectively non-accessible. Due to some RL issues on my(Alexander)'s part, once goo started actively losing money 6 months ago, I had changed jobs a bit to help support goo. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough combined with some other issues that crept up on me. Due to this, I'm formally shutting down Goo. There is an offer in to take over the files and hosting from a generous sponsor, however, until the financial issues are sorted out, they are unable to adsorb Goo. It's been my pleasure to serve files for you all for the past couple of years, and I wish everyone good luck into the future.

[Q] Already rooted; Would like to go to a new ROM; Not sure what to do next

Hi all,
I successfully rooted my phone a year or two ago, and haven't done anything with it since. I know basically nothing about phones, but I can follow instructions pretty well.
I would like to have a general update to the phone with a new ROM (just for the sake of variety), and I would specifically like to add the following features:
-Shrink the screen down with the side-swipe motion for one handed use
-Ultra power saving mode
-Quad multi window
I would also like to do whatever needs to be done to smooth the operation of the phone out a bit--it does lag occasionally when switching between apps and stutter when moving between screens or scrolling. It isn't awful, and I don't expect perfection, but I would like to improve upon this if possible.
Here's my current set up:
TWRP Recovery; v2.6.3.1
Model number: SCH-I605
Android Version: 4.1.1
Baseband Version: I605VRALL4
Kernel Version: 3.0.31-414933 [email protected] #1
Build Number: JRO03C.I605VRALJB
Hardware Version: I605.06
Please let me know if I need to post any other information.
So here are my questions:
-I rooted my phone ages ago and haven't done anything else with it since...is there anything I need to do to my phone to move to the more recently released custom ROMs? If I need to update something, what do I need to update?
-What ROMs would you recommend I try out? I found the R3DS and DN3 ROMs, and it looks like they might work for what I'm looking for. Any thoughts on that, or other suggestions? The DN4 ROM sounds perfect, but as I understand it, it will only work on the N7100.
-As I understand it, a new kernel will allow me to overclock the phone and smooth things out. Any recommendations on that, one way or the other?
Thanks in advance for the help. :good:
