[Q] Music quality on the SBH52 - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

HI everyone,
I just grabbed myself a SBH-52 yesterday. Basically it works pretty well. However, I still have a question,
I had read on some posts saying that the music quality is not different if using the phone and the SBH52. However, I do recognize a significant difference between using the phone and the sbh-52.
I tested with different songs, different handsets: the 775 coming with the headset, Sennheiser IE8 and XB700. Only the XB700 shows slight difference, the remain two are quite a gap.
Anyone suffers from this issue? is there anything to work with?

Problem with Plantronics BackBeat 903 Bluetooth headset

I recently got the BackBeat 903 as a replacement for my previous bt headset, and it works great for calls, however, when I tried listening to music the playback experience is not as good. The music plays just fine, but as soon as I move the phone, or if I turn the screen off the playback starts becoming choppy, as if the audio player (I tried several, and they all do the same) would loose CPU time and control to the G-Sensor or something, and then when I stop moving it around the playback resumes. Anybody had the same problem? Thanks for your help!

Hey there benitton, I have the same headset, and experience the exact same issue...intermittent skipping, as if the handset was bogging down for different reasons.
However, I'm firmly of the opinion that the issue is with the phone and the sub-par bluetooth stack in it, not with the headset itself. I haven't tried other BT stereo headsets with this phone, but I've used the backbeats with other devices, and didn't have the same issue at all.
Unfortunately, I haven't yet found any source or method for replacing the BT stack in the TP2, we may just be stuck with this one for good
Have you used any other stereo BT headsets with your TP2? If so, did you notice the same symptoms at all? (<----- that's a question for anybody, not just the OP)
Unfortunately I have not found any other headset that I would like to use, and as you mention, it seems that no matter which one we could use we'll have the same problem. I am trying to see if there is any way we can run any audio player in exclusive mode, maybe that could help a little bit, but since the BT stack is part the system, I guess it will still have problems. I tried disabling the G-Sensor, but I was not able to fully disable it, so I still had problems with the audio, but not as much as when it is fully enabled. I will keep trying to find something, and any suggestions you might have would be wonderful. Thank you!

I honestly haven't tried any other BT stereo headsets with the TP2, so I can't say for sure...but honestly for $12 I might just pick up that motorola to give it a shot and see.
But...I'm sure there's others here who have used that same model, or even different ones, who could comment on whether they've seen the same issues...
I have the backbeat 906 (it's a 903 with the headphone jack adapter in the box) and haven't had stutter problems using a Touch Pro 2, T-Mobile version, with the stock 6.5 ROM and S2P/S2U2. The audio quality has been great and I use the thing while running so it's obviously moving constantly. What software are you running on your phone that might be eating CPU?

Yeah I really should have bought the 906's instead...because now I can't find the adapter sold separately anywhere, and I already have a number of uses for it
Now when I have the issue, I usually have nothing running but the media player itself (I've had the issue with several different ones as well). However, after re-reading the OP's notes, they do bring up a good point...I've got my g-sensor set to work with manila too, so that might contribute to the issue, but it's intermittent enough that I can't tell yet whether turning the sensor off made any difference.
It also occured to me this morning that it might be related to the commonly-felt lag whenever the SMS module is engaged (like when receiving an SMS)...again, since not every SMS msg seems to affect the performance exactly the same, it'll be a little while 'till I can tell for sure.
While we wait for any other suggestions, those might be things for benniton to take a look at too

Interesting. I'm not using the g sensor for pretty much anything - usually when I'm using the 906s it's while running so my handset's got Endomondo, S2P, S2U2, and sometimes pocket outlook open. I've noticed it breaks up a little if i have my phone in the opposite pocket from the left earphone (so right pocket) but it doesn't stutter exactly, just drops in quality. left pocket is fine though. it's always been fine in a belt case.
Before S2P had working AVRCP on the Pro2 I was using the Music tab built into Manila and didn't have any lag issues with that either. Though, I just thought of this - wifi interference? BT and wifi use the same frequency bands and watching youtube videos over wifi has definitely induced a headphone stutter for me in the past. I got around it by letting the video cache first and then playing.
Problem disconnecting calls

I got the Plantronics Backbeat 903 for my Touch Pro 2. I really like the headset but I'm having a problem with it not disconnecting a call when I click the phone button on it to hang up.
It will always pick up the call when I click the button to answer but it will only sucessfully hang up the call maybe 1 out of 5 or six times.
Are any of you experiencing the same issue?
I had a Sprint Touch and bluetooth worked great with S9 headset. Then I got a Diamond and headset was horrible, lots of cut-outs, tried all kinds of things to no avail. Also got a Jabra BT2010, same problem with Diamond. Now I have the Touch Pro 2, Sprint, WM6.1 and Jabra works great with S2P, Resco Radio, StreamCenter and Slacker radio. Haven't tried with S9 because it died, battery won't hold charge, before I got the TP2. Just thought I would share my experience.
Was the quality good streaming with the TP2 Bluetooth or using the adaptor?
Can I ask what case you use with the TP2 when running? I would like this set up but don't want to risk damage to the phone through swear or rain. Does the TP2 fit in a iPhone armband?

Good with both the TP2 and the adaptor. I use S2P on the phone for my music app along with S2U2. As far as cases go, I just run with the phone in my pocket - I've run races in the rain and the phone's been entirely unaffected. Very solid hardware.
I used the BackBeat 903 with my iPhone 3G and experienced the constant breakup of signal whenever I tried to move around. If I was completely motionless, it provided superb quality - but if I tried to slowly walk across the room - it would break up with a frequency that approximately matched every right step (the phone was in my right pocket).
I disabled the "shake to shuffle" feature, just to be sure.
I tried holding the phone right up by my shoulders while walking, yet the disruptions continued.
And now I have upgraded to an iPhone 4 - and the problem is worse, not better.
Are we sure this is an Apple problem and not a Plantronics problem? Either way, I can't use the 903 for its intended purpose - to listen while walking.
Very, very frustrated.

I normally keep my phone in my left hand pocket when using the headphones - I believe the antenna is on the left side. I experienced poor performance with my phone on the right side of my body, but performance is typically good on the left. I've noticed that if I have a significant amount of metal between my head and the phone pocket (like, say, a handgun) the signal breaks up - my assumption is that whatever is in between the phone and the headset causes interference in the bluetooth connection. The best performance I've had has been my phone in the left side pocket of a pair of gym shorts, only wearing the shorts and a t-shirt. Also, for some reason my insulin pump doesn't seem to have enough metal in it to cause interference.
You have to make sure that your mobile phone is located on the left side of your body whole time, while you're using backbeat 903. It's in the manual hehehe. This will solve your problem. cheers.
Problem solved!!!
atleast for me ...I simply disabled the WIFI and poof the choppyness is gone and now plays without any distortion clear as a bell...hope this helps.
Of course I also used a registry editor to remove unwanted programs and clean out useless files.......... I think the problem lies with The 528MHz Qualcomm CPU with 288 megs of RAM.. I do not think it is sufficient enough to run all things at once...I would suggest to remove any and all unnecessary programs/files, then disable all which can be enabled when needed....good luck.

[Q] Bluetooth Audio Quality

Question,
Using bluetooth to play audio from Pandora sounds terrible. Lots of static, studdering, skipping, cut outs.
If i use a stereo cable it sounds great, so that rules out software.
My atrix sounded gorgeous over blue tooth, so that rules out the equipment.
Anyone else have any sound quality issues with the bluetooth?
No issue so far, use for about 4 hours a day for conference calls and then pandora/slacker or doubletwist for 2-3 hours more. Using Samsung sbh600 bluetooth.

I use A2DP stereo streaming to two different devices (car and supertooth disco) and it sound excellent! Much better than my old evo and just as good as the nexus S I had for a while.
If you are using wifi for the connection to Pandora, try switching to 3G or 4G. Wifi and bluetooth can interfere with each other as they use the same frequency. I haven't had any issues, but have seen it before with other devices.

I noticed the same thing today streaming to my kenwood unit. My droid X had flawless sound, this was exactly as you described. Any fix yet?
One thing I noticed, my X had a check box for an enhanced bluetooth audio quality....not sure if that made a difference or not.
Been using the phone in my car with my alpine deck without issue. I have the add-on bluetooth from alpine and it works really good with the phone. Randomly the music cuts out for a second but my old blackberry did the same thing, and so did my iPod Touch (2nd gen).
Shutting off the wifi on the phone isn't a bad idea... might give that a shot to see if that helps your issue? My blackberry would randomly distort the music. I would close pandora and do a battery pull then it would usually be back to "normal".
I have the same issue with my Clarion deck. Of course...I've somewhat convinced myself the speakers are a bit blown...but it's worse on BT than wired. From what I've been able to read there is a "bitpool" setting which controls the quality, and by default it's pretty low in the 30's, while it can go up to the 50's and the sound quality is noticeably different. CM fixes this from what I've read, but that's all. Apparently Blackberry has a higher setting by default, and each manufacturer can set their's different.
I'm hoping that a combination of new speakers and CM7 will remedy my issue.

mine is updated to their most current firmware. I'm more inclined to think it's a bad bluetooth stack like weiln12 mentions above. gonna try it out with my friends thunderbolt tonight and see if it is the same.
I also have a clarion deck and find the bluetooth audio quality to be horrific. I find it hard to believe that it's the head unit at fault since my old Droid1 sounded perfectly fine.
Is anyone aware of any roms or kernels that have a higher bitpool setting?
I haven't found any yet. I'm hoping when we see CM7 things will be better.

Sounds absolutely perfect on my Ford Sync audio.. I have a Scoche Bluetooth in my other car that I can test.. I haven't tested as it is currently off the road. I will let you know. With my Scoche and past phones I noticed the bluetooth is a little lower quality then the audio jack but not much and only with that unit.
I have a Motorola S305 headset that works very well with music (slacker, amazon mp3, and pandora). However, my bluetooth Samsung WEP570 sounds so bad, crackled, and quiet (even on max volume) that I don't even use it anymore for calls.

How is your call quality on the Ford sync? Specifically the incoming call volume.
I'm streaming Pandora to a MOTO roadster, then over fm to stereo, sounds great, no loss on the bass end either.
Have you tried another bt device?

I personally have tried a few and have problems. However, I've tried multiple thunderbolts and they all sound the same on my kenwood. I've definitely read about HTC using less than stellar bluetooth on their units before, so I am assuming that is the case here. I guess it just works ok with some and not with others. Testing my X on the same kenwood unit I have and it's crystal clear with no distortion.
This has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the bluetooth hardware itself. Bluetooth is a wireless digital transfer protocol, nothing more nothing less. It does nothing to the audio quality during it's transmission. Where we have a problem is in the amount of "space" (the bitpool) provided to send the information from your device to the receiver. The lower the bitpool, the less space is available for your music and the more it must be compressed. Motorola may infact provide a higher bitpool setting in their devices than HTC which would account for them sounding better and I also know that the X has a "Use High Quality Bluetooth Audio" setting, which I'm sure enables a higher bitpool.
The type of music you listen to also has a significant effect on how this sounds. If you listen to something that is sonicly simple (ie hip hop, pop, etc etc) it doesn't need as much "space" to sound good. However, when you switch over to music that has more going on like heavy metal, it needs more room.
I can give you a perfect example. I was listening to Rage Against the Machine today. In the slower parts of the songs, it sounded GREAT, but then when it picked up and the song got more involved there was a huge loss of fidelity and it didn't sound very good at all.
Now, for those of you who are happy with how yours sounds, that's awesome, but for those of us who are not, we simply just want to know of a way to adjust the bitpool setting or find a developer who is willing to code it in to their kernel/rom which I believe is what needs to happen.

Amen. You just summed up the situation perfectly. I forgot the X has the check box for high quality BT audio, that could very well be what makes it better. I'm going to check it out tonight w/o that checked and see how it fares. Not sure why HTC wouldn't have an option like that.

Apparently CM uses an open source BT stack that has good settings to use the higher bitpool but HTC chooses the Broadcom stack that utilizes a much lower bitpool as stated above. They don't seem to have a way to raise this value though....

i've had no issues. I use Pandora w/ high quality audio over BT into my Ford Sync system.
Sounds great. Somewhere between satellite radio and MP3 player SNR ratio.
Ironically my streaming audio is fine from mp3's i put on the SD, but IN CALL volume is much lower then i am used too, i have a Jabra BT530, its weird because the media volume is fine, but as soon as a call comes in i have to switch to the handset to hear the other end well.

I had that problem but it turned out to just be a volume issue, BT vol was set way higher...
Again, Streaming pandora to Motorola Roaster, which in turn broadcasts FM to my car stereo. It sounds fantastic.

Headphone volume balance

Hi all
I just got my international GS3 from O2 as a swap for an HTC One X. The One X seemed to have a fault where audio on the left channel was slightly louder than the right. After multiple replacement units all having the same problem, and even display models in shops and 2 friends One X's all showing the same bias, I realised it's just a fault with the phone.
I'm quite amazed to find the GS3 has the exact same problem. Before anyone asks, I have done every sort of test to rule out deficiencies in my hearing, the headphones and the source files, using multiple players, devices, headphones, files and even people's ears. The bias is inherent to the device.
I cannot work out why the GS3 and One X both have this problem, yet my ancient Sony W810i still has perfect stereo balance (OK, the sound is not very rich, but at least it's even). Incidentally, I tried mono mode on the GS3 and the problem persists.
Has anyone experienced this? The imbalance is only slight, but it's most noticable in podcasts, where the voices speaking seem to be in the left side of your head. This is especially noticable on larger headphones, and with bassier voices.
I'm open to rooting the phone if there's a solution that way around (probably will root soon anyway to get CM), perhaps a line of code somewhere where values can be adjusted. Relying on balance controls in individual media players (like PowerAmp) is not a solution, I want a global fix for all applications that use sound (I live on BeyondPod, video players, TuneIn Radio, Spotify and FM Radio).
Thank in advance for any tips, or even just careful testing of your own GS3s to see how widespread the problem is.

Bad / low audio from this phone

Hey guys, does anyone have this issue? The audio from the loudspeaker is just crap, and also the position of it is away from the screen?? What sense does that make? I'm trying to watch a video, not broadcast the video's audio to everyone in my general area (except me).
Now that's a physical problem and can't be fixed. What I'm really mad / inraged about is the jack audio. Any type of headphones I plug into is extremely quite. Compared to my old phone (xperia play) I can't hear anything....is this normal? Does anyone else have any similar problems? I can't even wear these outside and listen to music, the wind and car noise is far louder. I'm forced to bring my old xperia play instead just to hear something (which btw, it's like twice as loud on this phone) and if that's going to be the case every day then it's time to sell this Evo 3D.
Another side note is that the range of the audio is also not very good, I can hear it struggle with high ranges as it makes "pops" in the audio...very disappointing..

My audio has always been fine, but maybe you could try using an EQ or something (might need to be rooted)

It's possible that my phone is faulty, but let me ask you this; what volume is your phone at when you think it's fine? I have to place mine at max to be "fine", not great, but fine. While the xperia play is at 50% being just fine.

I personally keep mine at 30% - 40%, it's a comfortable volume. Anything past 70% is a bit too loud. Do you think it may be your headphones..? Or it could possibly be a software issue like your ROM.

Originally I thought it was my rom, so I flashed another; same issue, so then I flashed the RUU...same issue. Tried different headphones, same issue, tried the same headphones on different devices...works completely fine at loud audio. Guess the phone is screwed. It already doesn't have any gsm radio connectivity.

Are you using the HTC headphones? Because after plugging in the original HTC headphones it came with, I found that these headphones are loud and working correctly. So it seems that any other 3rd party headphones will not duplicate the same result. That is unfortunately because I hate the htc ones, they don't cancel out background sound at all. They all have the exact same jack, 3 rings, same size, etc. But the HTC one is different. When plugging those headphones into my xperia it gives an error and says they aren't supported. So it's obvious that HTC put some type of technology into them that differs them from regular headphones.
Edit: Alright, so I tried yet another pair of headphones lying around and they work fine too. Is it possible that I tried the worlds only two headphones that don't work well with this phone? In any case, I'm no longer mad about the jack audio, it's obviously fine. But the loudspeaker is and always will be an issue, which sucks but oh well.

So it seems that any other 3rd party headphones will not duplicate the same result. That is unfortunately because I hate the htc ones, they don't cancel out background sound at all. They all have the exact same jack, 3 rings, same size, etc. But the HTC one is different. When plugging those headphones into my xperia it gives an error and says they aren't supported. So it's obvious that HTC put some type of technology into them that differs them from regular headphones.
Edit: Alright, so I tried yet another pair of headphones lying around and they work fine too. Is it possible that I tried the worlds only two headphones that don't work well with this phone? In any case, I'm no longer mad about the jack audio, it's obviously fine. But the loudspeaker is and always will be an issue, which sucks but oh well.

Nope, using third-party (JVC) headphones. Good to see you've got it sorted out though. Also I agree about the loudspeaker, it's a piece of crap. My old Evo 4G had a better one.
My phone is quite loud!
On mwakious Rom and it has tweaked audio settings.
It's gsm but maybe try the xloud mod available. Should improve audio volume

[Q] Bluetooth audio issue

I've gotten very used to wandering around with a set of Motorola Buds around my neck-- the sound quality isn't AMAZING, but they're functional, and they maintain a connection over larger distances than I'm used to with other BT headsets. I tend to use them for music, voice calls, podcasts, and just about anything else.
At some point in the last few days, the sound quality of these headphones has gone from adequate to abysmal. It sounds to me like the phone is all of a sudden processing everything through phone audio instead of media audio-- everything has that tinny, compressed quality, and GREATLY decreased volume. Sound files seem to be taking longer to load, as well. I'm fairly sure that it's not the headset-- I connected them to my tablet and they sound just fine. I haven't tried connecting a different BT accessory to the phone yet, but that's the next step. I thought I'd poke my head in here first and see if anyone has had this issue.
I'm on a TMO Galaxy S5, running Project Infinity v.8. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears!
