Busted ZU screen - how to factory reset without touchscreen? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

The Ultra took a spill and now the screen is cracked:crying:. Screen still works but touch is dead. Luckily I bought the accidental replacement warranty though Sony.
I want to factory reset the phone before sending it back to Sony but without the touchscreen working how can I do this? Phone is stock on 4.3. My other androids had a volume/power button combination to get into the factory recovery to do a reset. What can I do?

Fastboot let's us flash certain things from a computer. Same with Flashmode.
- Fastboot = Turn your Ultra off and hold VOL UP while you plug it to your computer. A blue LED will light up.
Flashmode = Same as fast boot, but hold VOL DOWN. The LED will blink once and then it'll look "dead", but it is in flashmode.
Fastboot is mostly used when we flash boot.img and stuff like that, while flashmode is used when we flash stock FTF ROMs using Flashtool on the computer. If you want to go back to complete stock, install Flashtool on your computer, download a stock Sony ROM (FTF) and flash it by kicking it into Flashmode.
Are your bootloader unlocked? If yes, click the BLU button in Flashtool and re-lock your bootloader. If it's not unlocked then just flash a stock ROM and you're done.
Can you give us some more info? What ROM are you currently on? Unlocked bootloader? Rooted?
I'm in bed now so I can help you tomorrow if you need some help.

Seriously helpful post dude! Thanks!
So I found the flashtool instructions from this thread --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2240614
My phone is bone stock .290 4.3. Never unlocked bootloader, rooted, or anything. Just stock.
Once I install Flashtool and the corresponding drivers I just flash the stock ROM on the phone, and thats it? That doesn't mess with the bootloader or TA partition, or any of that stuff?

Correct. That's the only thing you'll have to do. The TA partition is intact since you didn't unlock the bootloader. Flash the ROM and you're done. You probably want to do a full wipe (delete all personal stuff), so be sure that the three boxes under WIPE (in flashtool) are checked

Please HELP!!

I tried to fastboot the doomkernel, followed by zerorom, and it's stuck in a perpetual bootloop. I tried restoring via recovery, but it hasn't help. I tried re FB'ing the original boot.img, but that didn't help either. Anyone?
EDIT: And NOW, it will ONLY boot into recovery...which is just bizarre. Please someone help. I swear I hate this thing, lol.
Thats not bizzare Infact it's the whole purpose of recovery lol use flashtool to flash a stock rom or try flashing stock kernel.sin from fastboot

That's the problem. I can't do fastboot now, it keeps rebooting the phone into recovery. I don't have a chance to searchbutton>plug in usb. Even when I load the battery and press power, it loads the recovery. Is there even an OS on my phone now? lol Does anyone have a flashable stock rom?

I'm new to the Xperia scene. Just got mine two days ago, and have latest stock UK firmware, plus DoomLord's latest kernel, so I'm no expert...
Why don't you try removing the battery first, then plug in the USB cable, hold search button, and reconnect battery?
Exactly what I was going to suggest. But I personally would flash a clean install via flashtool first, and start again.

And where can I get a clean install? Do I just flash it in fastboot like everything else?

there is a fastboot image somewhere in the forum. but personally, i'm a fan of downloading the ftf versions of the firmware and flashing via flashtool. you familiar with this method in any way? there is also a website called watonserver, which has many versions of firmware, which you may find easier and less hassle than flashtool.
then once you have a freshly installed phone, you can try to do whatever you want again from the start

Oh man you could be my key to success! I have a file called R800x_FullStocknosimlockta_Verizon.ftf but how would I flash it via the flashtool? Is that the same thing as fastbooting something? (fastboot flash boot YOURFILENAME.img, etc)
EDIT: in re-reading your post, I'm guessing that fastboot and flashtool are not the same thing. I'm not familiar, but eager to learn.
If a file ends in .ftf or .sin you flash via flashtool. A program commonly used for the x10 and flashes to the phone in flash mode (led lot up in green)
And files ending in .img are flashed with fastboot (cmd command) with phone in bootloader mode (blue led)
EDIT: what model phone you using? the R800x?

This is not entirely true.... .sin files can be flashed with fastboot as well because they are essentially just images themselves: fastboot.exe flash boot kernel.sin
Sent from my R800x using XDA App
But for simplicity, I like to keep .sin files to flashtool. Especially as there is so many of them!! plus, you don't need bootloader unlocked to flash .sin via flashtool.

Yes I'm using the R800X. If there's a way to completely install a new firmware/OS, then that's what I'd like. As soon as it is plugged in to the usb cable, it goes straight to recovery.
EDIT: Okay doing no battery-hold search>plug in>reinsert battery worked. Now I'm in fastboot mode (blue LED) now give me something(s) to flash which will get me back to stock, minus the bootloader. I'd like the bootloader to stay locked, lol. R800X.

[Q] How do you enter recovery to flash DoomKernel?

Sorry if it's a noob question but I've no idea how to do it. I saw somewhere that you're supposed to press the volume up button when it's booting and a blue LED flashes but that didn't do anything for me. Tried multiple times.
Thanks in advance C:
Turn off
Hold volume up then connect USB
Blue led, you can do it, green LED you cant.
Isn't that fastboot mode? Because that works but I can't figure out how to flash the DooMKernel. There's no option to do it in Flashtool :/

You need to flash kernel.elf via fastboot first, then boot into recovery and flash the whole zip.

The recboery is included inside the kernel. Because you don't have recovery you have to flash is through fastboot first, then flash the update (zip), Rom, or anything else through the recovery.

Keep in mind that unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty.
First understand everything in the above threads (above links) and then start doing them in your mobile.
After you root your mobile and flash a kernel that has recovery, you can enter into recovery by pressing the volume button few times while the phone is booting.
Go through the threads in the development section first.
NO....it will NOT void your warranty, for the hundredth time....
I swear they tell you to read the warning before you do it, but no one does... It says 'may' which does not mean 'will'. It will only be voided if you overclock or do something stupid and fry your phone.
For rooting and general mild modifications it will NOT void your warranty. Even overclocking really won't unless you go overboard.

[Q] What to do if booting into recovery doesn't work?

I sort of asked this question in the other 'Can't boot into recovery' thread..but wanted to ask about the same thing in general.
So I'm new to using flashboot and Flashtool; I've always had Samsung phones so mostly just dealt with Odin and Heimdall if I needed to flash a kernel or firmware outside of recovery. In the past 24 hrs, I've used fastboot to flash the custom recovery / kernel and then later stock kernel, and Flashtool to flash the stock .55 firmware after I was having some issues w/ the phone.
- Issues:
1 - When I shut down the phone, it won't stay off; it'll reboot.
2 - Can't get into recovery; only fastboot. During my 2nd attempt at root, I wanted to simply flash the custom recovery / kernel in stock recovery, but the light that's supposed to come on when you turn on the phone, wouldn't. So ended up having to install it via fastboot again.
I can get into recovery now - but I'd like to understand what causes the inability to boot into recovery, and what is right course of action to fix it.
Thanks!
Praz
I cant answer all but ill answer some
1. Xperia devices do not have a reboot wrapper hence making rebooting into recovery not work
2. Xperias do not have recovery partitions hence no stock recovery
3. Find a .69 firmware , this should fix some bugs
4. If you want a custom recovery you will have to flash a custom kernel and to do any of that you need to unlock your bootloader otherwise it'll brick your device
5. Flashtool can be used to flash doomkernel
Doomkernel being a custom kernel which for all devices being a flawless kernel of which containing 3 different recoveries
Sent from my D6503 from XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Thanks for the reply. At this point I've installed Doomlord's kernel and RomAur ROM. The only issue I'm seeing is that the phone won't turn off. I have to hold power and the volume up button until the phone vibrates three times and let go. Then it stays off.
Oh and the notification light stays on sometimes.
I guess that's a step up.

If the phone wont power off make sure you don't have the quick boot option ticked in developer options, this is known to cause the phone not to power off.

Okay, I checked and it looks like quickboot is not enabled. It's very odd - aside from flashing CWM+root and the ROM, I haven't explicitly set any options related to powering on/off. Is there anything root related that could cause it?

Root shouldn't have caused anything
Root is 2 simple individual files which are self dependant
I wouldn't be suprised if it was a unit fault
Try reflashing your firmware and see if the issue arises again if it does, try to get a replacement

I hope it's not something that bad! But thanks for the clarification regarding root, that helps.
Alright - will give it another shot. I have a .55ftf that I found after hunting around the web, but is there a site like sammobile that has Z2 firmwares? Or do I need to relock my phone and then use PC Companion (ie do a repair)?

Hmm id wait a tiny bit for later versions FTFs to show up maybe global generic or country generic
I'm not to sure about PC companion, i don't use windows and PC companion last i checked was windows only
Last time i used, it was for Locked Bootloaders Only hence my reason to use flashtool
Try using "FlashTool" (Not emma flashtool by the way) to flash a FTF file to your device.

Euro LTE should be Generic Europe if the title says what it is
To flash a FTF its the Lightning icon at the top left, select flashmode not fastboot
Id recomend unlocking your bootloader as this lowers risks however your warenty is voided doing so

OK - some progress. I re-locked the bootloader and did a 'repair' with PC Companion. So far the phone is shutting down properly.
Also, I'm making a stock ftf for myself.
UPDATE:
I believe the issue is resolved - I did things a little differently this time...
1 - flashed the CWM via flashtool
2 - flashed superSU in CWM, activated superSU Pro
3 - installed busybox pro to /xbin and declined whatever funny business it was asking about at first (something already in /sbin)
4 - rebooted
5 - let some apps update, etc., then shut the phone down
It's staying off! Hopefully that's the end of that issue..

Unbrick Xperia Z2

OK, I decided to put a custom ROM on my Z2 today. I did not unlock bootloader, but installed NUT's Dual Recovery. It booted, installed ROM fine. I decided I wanted to reinstall to change some settings, wiped data and davlik, rebooted (by accident), and now I'm just suck at SONY logo on boot. Please help, not sure how to fix this. I can power off by Power Button + Volume Up, or the red button on left side. I just want to get it back into recovery so I can reflash, or whatever I need to do to revive it. Searched around, not finding much to fix it. Please help!

Nevermind, it worked now. It was telling me some weird instructions, had to have it in fastboot, unplug and plug back in again without doing anything. It's booting now. Why would this happen? Maybe I just need to unlock my bootloader?

No, it has nothing to do with unlocking your bootloader. If you were using flashtool you probably didn't plug it in in the correct mode.
As for unlocking your bootloader, read the instructions on any ROM's OP. It will tell you whether it needs an unlocked bootloader or not. Sony stock based ROMs sometimes do and sometimes don't. AOSP based ROMs do need an unlocked bootloader as that is needed to flash a custom kernel. If you do want to unlock your bootloader, read up on how to root your device first without unlocking and then read up on how to back up the TA partition of your device. This partition is effectively your warranty and contains the DRM keys to all of Sony's proprietary software. If you unlock your bootloader without a backup, you lose your DRM keys and they are non retrievable. Thus, if you want to send the device off for a repair, without restoring the TA partition you cannot restore your warranty and it will be declined. Having your TA partition backed up means that if you ever need to send it off, you can restore it and this locks your bootloader and reverses any DRM key loss.
If you have any further questions please ask before doing anything. We can only help answer questions if you ask them :highfive:
Please post questions and help in the Q&A/Troubleshooting section. You will receive replies much more quickly if you do so.

Have you backed up the TA partition?
Did you flash the GPe version of beanstalk?
How did you install the ROM zip?
I'm at work for the next 9 or 10 hours and probably won't hell cell service, but I'll think on the best way to recover the phone with out loss of a working camera and DRM keys - unlocking the BL on 4.4.2 normally leaves the camera somewhat broken

You might want to talk to @the_laser and see if they can help, but you have over written all of the partitions of the ZU GPe. Have a read of (and maybe post to) the Hard Brick thread in the general section, but DON'T flash anything from that thread.
